Music video monday

Music Video Monday: October 3, 2011

This week’s video comes to us courtesy of DaytonMostMetro’s own, Gladgirl.  It features Kelley Deal (The Breeders, Kelley Deal 6000 and R.Ring), Paige Beller (Jasper the Colossal) and Christine Hunt covering the Black Swans’  “Slide on Down.”  It’s a great intimate reminder that great musical collaborations are happening all the time in our fair city.  Enjoy!

In addition to being a fantastic blues guitarist, Noah Wotherspoon is also a very talented singer-songwriter.  Writing and performing under the name Noah and the Rescue Radio, Wotherspoon has been forging a different sound for himself, one I’m pretty fond of.  Check out this video created by Noah Wotherspoon & Jessi Bair.  If, like me, you’re a fan of the film The Science of Sleep, I think you’ll enjoy this one.

Steven Gullett performed with some great names in Dayton music: the Mystery Addicts, American Static and Snake Oil among many others. He also hosted Canal Street Tavern’s Musicians Co-op for 3 years and continues to pursue a solo career from his new(ish) home base in Los Angeles.  Today’s video features a song from Gullett’s latest album, Secular Jukebox, available for sale online and to stream on SoundCloud.

The video itself comes from New York based director Catrin Hedström and is part of a project called They Call Us Animals.  The footage comes from a video Hedström was encouraged to make by a band she loved.  However, she ran into a problem because she didn’t have the rights to the music.  Read the whole story here. Catrin Hedström has offered the video footage (to which she does have the rights) for free and has invited musicians and creators to make something with her footage and share it on her site.

Any Dayton bands up for the challenge? If so, be sure to send a link to your finished video to daytonmusicATdaytonmostmetroDOTcom and we’ll feature it in a future Music Video Monday.

Ever since Jesse Remnant and the Trainwrecks released their first album, The Human Cannonball (Squid’s Eye), I can’t get enough of their tunes.  Since then, the band has renamed itself Human Cannonball and has been working on a new album, Let’s Be Friends.  This week’s video is for a song from that album called “Overtime.” Enjoy!

Ah, Monday the 13th….day of…..looking forward to great music this weekend.

The weekend kicks off with a great lineup at Blind Bob’s.  Cincinnati’s Great Young Hunters will join three great local bands onstage: Ape the Ghost, which features members of Sleepybird, We Were Animals, which features members of Ed Vs. Radio, and Oh Condor, the new name for 8-bit Revival. In honor of their re-naming and this weekend’s show, our music video 8-bit Revival performing at Blind Bob’s last spring courtesy of The Music Seen.  Full details about this weekend’s show are available at the Dayton MostMetro Events Calendar. It’s big week in Dayton for music and entertainment.  With Urban Nights, Side Show 6, and the Captain of Industry reunion show at Gilly’s to name just a few, there’s going to be a lot to do and to hear.  At least one band is giving you multiple chances to check them out this week.  You can catch the luchador surf rock stylings of Team Void this Wednesday night during the latest Dirty Little Secret at Wiley’s Comedy Club.  If you want to learn more about Dirty Little Secrets, check out J.T. Ryder’s recent article about the series here on Dayton MostMetro.

You can also catch Team Void on Friday Night at Garden Station as part of Side Show 6.  Full band lineup and details for that event are available here.

Here’s a video of one of the band’s previous Garden Station performances.

As you feast on leftover Peeps, enjoy this week’s video from Bonneville. This young band has been going strong since 1999.  Last year they released Drawing Maps, and the bands is already writing new songs for an upcoming album.  You can see them live this week at Wright State University as part of a free local music showcase hosted by the campus radio station, WWSU 106.9FM.

Full details on the WWSU Local Music showcase are available at the Dayton MostMetro events calendar.

Very high on things we’re excited about this week is Record Store Day on Saturday, April 16th.  It’s a celebration of independent record stores and record store culture that’s been around since 2007.  There’s a lot happening locally this year, and we’ll be bringing you lots of information this week on Dayton MostMetro about what’s happening where.

In the meantime, here’s a video from one of the many bands you’ll be able to see at Omega Music on 5th Street on Record Store Day.  This Yakuza Heart Attack video comes from a cool, but seemingly short-lived series called Come Check the Noise.

…Actually it’s March 29th. We’re bringing you this week’s music video a day late because sometimes the mere rumor of a pending announcement is worth waiting for. Now that the cat is out of the bag, we’re happy to help spread the word about April’s NTRO/XPO residency at South Park Tavern put on by our friends at the Buddha Den. Every Tuesday night in April you can catch Kelley Deal & Mike Montgomery performing under the name R. Ring on the South Park Tavern stage. They’ll be joined by handpicked musicians and speakers (if my memory serves, a first for the NTRO/XPO series). Here’s a promo video by Chris Glass:

R.RING at South Park Tavern from glass on Vimeo.

NTRO/XPO happens every Tuesday night at South Park Tavern.  It’s an, all ages event hosted by the Buddha Den. Admission is $5.
