Local musician Mike Bankhead releases new single “Hold the Wick”

March 4, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

Talented local rock musician, Mike Bankhead, is releasing a new single this month called “Hold the Wick” with a whopping 7 remixes, all of which are in different genres/styles. He plans to release them all together digitally, with each remix accompanied by a music video.

Mike Bankhead is a bassist and songwriter from the Dayton, Ohio area. His songs feature crunchy guitar, occasional dissonance, and love of hooks.

His newest work, “Hold the Wick,” was recorded and mixed in just one day at ReelLove Recording Company here in Dayton.

“I really wanted to work with other musicians and put a project around the single, so I commissioned seven remixes, each one in a different style,” Bankhead shared with us. “Remember the CD-singles from the 90s where you would buy a single, but the disc would have some additional songs on it? That’s the feeling I wanted to capture here.”

Each of the collaborators who worked on the remixes received the same song building blocks – and each person had the freedom to create whatever they wanted to create with those pieces. “I hope that listeners also look into the other work from each of the 7 creative individuals who did remixes.”

The new single “Hold the Wick” debuts on Bandcamp on March 4th, which is also a “Bandcamp Friday” – a day when musicians make their full payment on any music purchased.

The single will be released on all other streaming services by March 15th. That is also the date Bankhead will appear on WUDR Flyer Radio and his music video will premiere on YouTube.

Find out more about Mike and his music at his website: MikeBankheadMusic.com

Joslyn & The Sweet Compression kick off tour at The Brightside

March 1, 2022 By Dayton937

One of the hottest up-and-coming national acts: Joslyn & The Sweet Compression is kicking off their 2022 tour right here in Dayton. They’ll be performing at The Brightside Music & Event Venue in downtown Dayton, OH (905 E 3rd St) on Thursday, March 3, 2022.

Local legend, Eric Jerardi, kicks off the evening with his band. Doors open at 7pm with music from 7:30-10pm. Tickets $12 advance and $15 day of show. All ages welcome!

What people are saying about Joslyn & The Sweet Compression:

“Magical…gives everybody the joy.” — Billboard Magazine

“A refreshing take on the neo-soul / funk sound, unbound by modern cliches.” — Glide Magazine

“A marvel…an instant classic!” — Soul Tracks

“I’ve never seen a band come up more quickly…with more immediate skill and swagger than Joslyn & the Sweet Compression. Joslyn’s vocal command and stage presence is special, and her band is brick-sh**house tight.” — Travis Young, Moonshiner’s Ball

“The music Joslyn Hampton conjures o-stage is rich with the funk, soul, and rock ’n’ roll inspirations of multiple generations, and at the heart of the brassy attack of her band, The Sweet Compression, and in the clear and confident command of her singing, sits a core element: Groove.” — Walter Tunis, Lexington Herald-Leader

About Joslyn & The Sweet Compression:

After cultivating her dynamic voice and performance skills in backup roles and stage plays, Joslyn Hampton teamed with her stepfather, Marty Charters (a touring guitarist and songwriter who has shared the stage with legends such as Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, and Van Morrison), to compose a captivating set of tunes and assemble an ace band. Joslyn & The Sweet Compression (Marty Charters – guitar, Steve Holloman – keyboards, Smith Donaldson – bass, Rashawn Fleming – drums, Trevin Little – saxophone, and Chase Fleming – trombone and trumpet) combine to deliver a hook-filled mix of funk and soul on their self-titled debut album, released in 2019. A headlining favorite at regional clubs and music festivals, they are poised to engage fans across the country with widespread touring in 2021.

February 8, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

Musicians are encouraged to apply to be part of this year’s Dayton Porchfest. The annual neighborhood musical event is held on porches throughout the historic and charming downtown St Anne’s Hill. This year’s event is planned for Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Organizers at The Collaboratory are asking area musicians of all styles to apply to perform. Dayton Porchfest is a multi-genre festival, open to all Dayton-area musicians and bands. Dayton PorchFest is free to attend, and a tips-only festival. Organizers supply the tip jars and aggressively promote tipping the performers. Bands are welcome to sell CDs and merchandise.

For 2022 Dayton Porchfest will be selecting 45-50 performers. The selection of artists will be based on curating five-musically diverse music blocks. Sets are 45-50 minutes and start at 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 PM. The application deadline is 11:59 PM, Monday, February 28, 2022. Link to application: https://daytonporchfest.wixsite.com/home/application

Dayton Porchfest was founded in 2017, inspired by the original Porchfest, which was started in 2007 in Ithaca, NY. Today there are over 150 Porchfests throughout the United States and Canada. Dayton was 94!

Dayton has a rich musical history and active music scene, which continues today. Dayton Porchfest is committed to reflecting that in its selection of musical artists, from funk and hip-hop to blues to indie rock, classical, and country, to bluegrass and old-timey music that has deep Appalachian traditions here. We also celebrate the ethnic diversity of the region, a reflection of our “Welcome Dayton” spirit that has contributed to a significant influx of immigrants and refugees over the past decade.

Dayton Porchfest is an initiative of The Collaboratory, a civic innovation lab that moves ideas to action. The Collaboratory provides infrastructure for people and organizations to collaboratively develop community initiatives that generate new economic, civic, and creative opportunities and value. The result is a healthier, more thriving region. All proceeds from Dayton Porchfest go to support the work of The Collaboratory.

Dayton Battle of the Bands series kicks off at The Brightside

January 20, 2022 By Dayton937

The Katawicks, the 2020 winners of Dayton Battle of the Bands

The 2nd annual Dayton Battle of the Bands series kicks off at The Brightside on Thursday, January 20, 2022. The six-week series seeks to highlight emerging, original musical talent in Dayton through a unique community collaboration between The Brightside, Sound Valley, Venus Child Productions, and Levitt Pavilion Dayton.

The series runs on Thursday evenings from 7-10pm at The Brightside (905 E 3rd St, Dayton) starting January 20th and running through February. Each Thursday evening features 4 bands performing 20 min sets. Each paying patron gets a ballot and one vote. There are also 3 local music industry judges voting too. Judges and audience votes are split 50/50 during the playoff rounds. The winner of each Thursday competition will move onto the finale, which is held on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Dayton Battle of the Bands launched in January of 2020, ran 6 weeks, and concluded before the pandemic started. Organizers were unable to host the competition in 2021 due to the shutdown, so they are extra excited to be hosting this series once again.

One major thing that is different this time is that each finalist (6 total) will get an opening spot on Levitt Pavilion Dayton’s 2022 summer schedule! This is a major opportunity for all the bands. Each finalist will also receive a video of one song performed live during the finale from Sound Valley Dayton. The winner of the entire competition will earn studio time to record an EP, which was generously donated by Dayton Sound Studios.

“Despite ‘battle’ being in the name, this is actually a really friendly competition and a great way for bands to network with each other and get feedback from the judges,” Carli Dixon, owner of The Brightside, shared with us.

HOW TO GO?

Thursdays, January 20 through February 24, 2022

Located at The Brightside (905 E 3rd St, Dayton).

Doors open at 7pm / Show 7:30-10:30pm. Please be prompt to see all the bands!

November 15, 2021 By LIbby Ballengee

Dayton Dinner Theater is back! This fun Sunday tradition starts back on November 21, 2021, with the showing of Star Wars (A New Hope) at The Brightside Music & Event Venue from 6-9pm.

“I think it’s the perfect cure for the winter blahs,” says Dayton resident John Boucuvalas and founder of the Dayton Dinner Theater which opens back up on Sunday, after being shut down last year due to Covid. “I think it’s important to have something fun to look forward to when the days are short and the weather is cold and grey.”

They’ve also partnered with local caterer Brock Masterson, to create themed food and drinks specific to each film.

“We were getting some big crowds and momentum when Covid hit, and now we are ready to be back and better than before,” says Boucuvalas. “Partnering with UD and Brock Masterson’s is great and adds a touch of class and familiarity for folks around here.”

With a full Sunday liquor license at The Brightside, the fully stocked bar features our signature $5.00 themed drinks along with a wide variety of mixed drinks, wines, and beer.

During the movie, Dayton Dinner Theatre features their famous interactive quote contest, fun facts, theme spotting, with a trivia contest during intermission. They truly make movies a social and interactive experience.

Live music is back at The Brightside – featuring locals Gabe Maas, Mariah J, & Isicle

May 30, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

On June 3rd the mask mandate lifts in Ohio, and that means it’s a lot easier to get back to the fun things we’ve been missing since the pandemic shutdown. One of the types of gatherings people have been missing the most is seeing live music. Local venues, like The Brightside, are excited to be hosting concerts again.

The Brightside started hosting music in 2019, and just as they approached their one-year anniversary, the COVID shutdown went into effect. The independent venue located on East 3rd St, near the corner of Keowee, pivoted to weddings, sold merchandise, and hosted virtual events over the past year.

“We’re grateful to the community for their support during this challenging time,” music booker Libby Ballengee, told us. “Our biggest goal was to keep improving the venue and when it’s safe, get back to hosting music events. Those events are so joyful!”

The improvements have included adding UV filters to the ductwork in order to clean the circulating indoor air. The venue was also able to add a patio, where they can host outdoor concerts.

The venue’s first show back since the mask mandate has been lifted features three up-and-coming local musicians who perform an eclectic mix of Soul, R&B, Pop & Electronic music: Mariah J, Gabe Maas & The Bruins, and Isicle. These artists are pushing boundaries in their respective genres, and are thrilled to be performing for Dayton audiences again. This show is planned to be outdoors on patio unless inclement weather.

New patio opening with live music at The Brightside

October 22, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

New patio at The Brightside

The Brightside, one of Dayton’s newest music and event venues, has been fighting to come back since their COVID shutdown mid-March. Although they’ve hosted private events and weddings, as well as some exclusive virtual concerts this summer, they’ve been pretty quiet.

Owners Carli and Hamilton Dixon used the “downtime” to focus on continuing to improve the building. They took the formerly abandoned coal warehouse at the corner of 3rd and Keowee, and have transformed it into one of the coolest event spots in downtown Dayton. This summer, they repainted the entire exterior, added a new mural and signage, finished a brand new loft space, and most recently, added a patio.

The patio’s first use is happening on Thursday October 22, 2020 with live music from local blues band Wolf Moon Revival from 7-10pm. There will be a food truck on site on what promises to be a lovely, warm evening in late October. The band plans come to back the following Thursday as well (October 29). The venue and the band are making the most of new patio while the weather holds out. Both events are no cost to attend but donations for musicians appreciated.

Dixon’s Violin performs at The Brightside on Sunday October 25th

“We saw the weather was going to be pretty nice the end of October and thought, why not put the new patio to use now?” the venue’s music booker, Libby Ballengee of Venus Child Productions, told us. “We are so excited to have outdoor space to utilize, and couldn’t wait to have live music back!”

They also have planned to bring back Dixon’s Violin, a mesmerizing musical act the venue hosted last year to critical acclaim. He will also be performing outdoors at The Brightside on Sunday October 25th from 4-6pm. Dixon, who is no relation to the owners, has performed at Burning Man, TED and Eletric Forest, to name a few. He is sure to delight audiences of all varieties! Tickets are required to attend Sunday’s show, which are $20 in advance, $25 day of show.

If weather does not hold out for those shows, they will be pulled inside to the Brightside’s voluminous ballroom, where patrons will be spaced out 6′ apart and be able to order drinks from a contactless ordering system. The venue has also added UV cleaning systems to filter the air in all of their HVAC units.

“We’re doing everything we can to ensure our guest’s safety,” Ballengee continued. “That’s one reason we’ve held off hosting live music. We want to make sure we can host in a way that is safe for our guests, staff and musicians.”

Guests are required to wear masks if they are standing, and are asked to practice social distancing. For more information visit the venue’s website at thebrightsidedayton.com

Cincinnati Native Nominated for an Independent Music Award

April 18, 2020 By Mitch Miley

The supremely talented up-and-coming singer-songwriter Olivia Frances will look to add another award to her already impressive collection of accolades. Musical from a young age, Frances started playing piano at age six and composed her first song on guitar at age 12. Her dedication from such young age has paid off by having written over 300 songs. Frances credits Fleetwood Mac, Bon Iver and Kacey Musgraves as her musical inspirations.

This month, Music Resource Group announced the Nominees for The 18th Annual Independent Music Awards (IMAs). Nominations in 100+ Music, Video and Design categories were awarded to an eclectic roster of established and emerging talent from around the globe.

Frances is nominated in the Story Song Category for “The Bee & the Rose” a sweeping, environmentally-driven song off Orchid (2019), her latest bouquet of songs and stories. The Worcester Telegram & Gazette describes the album as “irrepressibly sweet — and eminently likable.” Written with the talented Nashville-based songwriter Michael Astrachan and produced by the distinguished Pat Lassiter, “The Bee & the Rose” reminds listeners of the natural beauty of the world and uses it on stage as a catalyst to discuss the current bee crisis.

Frances is no stranger to the Independent Music Awards. In 2018, she won the VOX Pop Love Song Category and the awards ceremony took place at Lincoln Center. Frances is a multi-award-winning artist, placing 1st in the Singer-Songwriter Category at the 2018 New England Songwriting Competition and winning Best Pop Song of the Year at the 2017 Ohio Music Awards.

Musical legends Lucinda Williams, Steven Van Zandt, Ellis Paul and Jonatha Brooke are nominated alongside Frances. The winning projects will be selected by influential judging panels including: Tom Waits & Kathleen Brennan, Robert Smith, Ziggy Marley, KT Tunstall, and many more indie creatives, top recording artists and industry influencers.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The 18th annual Independent Music Awards ceremony originally scheduled for June in New York City will proceed as an online showcase for this year’s top-ranked artists and music projects. Now in its 18th year, The Independent Music Awards honors artistry and daring rather than streams and social reach, and celebrates everything that makes indie music authentic and unique.
