Every Sunday in February Coco’s Bistro will host “Savor Your Sunday,” a special brunch series featuring performances by young musicians from Stivers School for the Arts. The restaurant will be open from 10am – 1pm  and Coco’s chefs have  crafted a special menu for the brunches:

Savor Your Sunday Brunches are returning to Coco’s Bistro this February.  Each Sunday the Stivers School for the Arts performing arts magnet students will perform, while the kitchen at Coco’s serve up brunch from 10am – 1pm

The brunch runs $40 per person, $15 of which is donated to The seedling Foundation of Dayton Ohio to support the unique needs of the students at Stivers School for the Arts.

Reservations are highly suggested, as these brunches have historically sold out quickly.

This Must Be the Party hits the stage this Friday at The Brightside

One of the most celebrated music events in Dayton during the last decade is back! This Must Be the Party is a local super group who performs a fantastic tribute to The Talking Heads. Fans love the complete recreation of the classic album and documentary film Stop Making Sense that they perform! Catch them for an exclusive show Friday April 14, 2023 at The Brightside, in downtown Dayton.

Few bands are as well-known in the music industry as the Talking Heads. The band, which was founded in the middle of the 1970s, contributed to the development of a new musical genre that would later come to rule the radio in the 1980s. The Talking Heads were one of the most innovative and forward-thinking bands of their period with their special fusion of rock, groove, and New Wave. It’s no wonder that Dayton audiences love this tribute show!

Due to the Covid shutdown, This Must Be the Party hasn’t performed since 2019, so this is a highly anticipated event! The best part is that part of the proceeds from this show go to benefit The Seedling Foundation, an organization that supports the arts magnet at Stivers School for the Arts. It’s a musical celebration to support music education!

If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing this amazing show already, you know how much fun to expect! (Pro tip: Wear comfortable shoes!) This go around, there is a very special guest joining the show. Sammi Garett, from the national touring acts Turquaz, Cool Cool Cool, & The Bump Assembly, is flying in from Brooklyn to join the crew! She’s an absolutely fabulous singer and performer, and she’s excited to perform in Dayton for the first time.

Local original band, Intergalactic Space Force, is kicking off the show at 8:30pm, shortly after doors open. They were Dayton Battle of the Bands finalists last year, and always love an opportunity to perform at The Brightside.

After the Stop Making Sense headlining show, if you’re still ready to boogie, Freekbass will be making his Brightside debut with a “Solo Grooves” after party.

If you get hungry, the venue has coordinated with Phat & Rich to be on site to serve your needs. The Mexican inspired cuisine is a hit with concert goers, so go hungry and hang on the Brightside’s awesome patio between sets.

If you’re looking for a place to pre-game, organizers recommend going to Tender Mercy for their amazing cocktails. “Not only is Tender Mercy our neighbor, they are one of the primary sponsors of this event!” event organizer, Libby Ballengee told us. “Their sister restaurant Sueño, is an amazing spot for dinner too, but I’d get reservations first!”

This Must Be the Party promises to be one of the most memorable events of the spring!

This Must Be the Party returns to The Brightside this April

The Brightside is excited to announce This Must Be the Party – the fantastic local tribute to the Talking Heads is back in their Ballroom on Friday, April 14, 2023.  It’s a complete recreation of the classic album & film “Stop Making Sense.”

Due to the covid pandemic, it’s been 4 years since the beloved local tribute show has been seen by Dayton audiences. This time around it’s serving as a fundraiser for The Seedling Foundation, which supports Stivers School for the Arts.

What’s even better? We have some very special guest joining the band! Sammi Garrett is flying in from Brooklyn to perform exclusively for this fundraiser. She’s well known for being in the bands Turquaz, Cool Cool Cool, & The Bump Assembly fame).

A “Solo Grooves” After Party with Freekbass is also planned. So if you’re still ready to keep dancing after the Talking Heads set, stick around for a fun after party with surprise guests.

Charlie’s 18 Reasons It’s Great in Dayton This Week!

Lily’s Bistro is offering a special limited time Victorian Holiday Prix Fixe menu Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The holiday menu starts at $25 and is being served from 5-9pm. 
 
The Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill, a Christmas Holiday tradition for over three decades is highlighted on ABC TV’S ‘THE GREAT CHRISTMAS LIGHT FIGHT’ Monday evening, 8 to 9pm. Broadcast locally in Dayton on WKEF-ABC 22, WCPO Ch. 9 in Cincinnati, WSYX Ch. 6 in Columbus, and all over the country on the ABC Television Network.

Glen Helen Solstice/Holiday Poetry Reading. The popular holiday event regularly attracts an enthusiastic audience of over a hundred for an evening of original poetry in a warm, natural setting. Twelve scheduled poets from Southwest Ohio will share original poems based on the winter solstice. This is in the Vernet Ecological Center, 405 Corry Street, Yellow Springs, Friday 7 to 9pm.
Dayton Contra are having the Gem City Serenaders with Liz Burkhart. This is at the Michael Solomon Dance Pavilion, 2917 Berkley Ave, Kettering, on Friday, 7:30 to 11pm.
The annual Holiday Craft Show features items from more than 30 local artisan vendors, swag bags, a food truck, a raffle, and specialty cocktails at the bar. Admission is free. The Yellow Cab Tavern, Friday, 5 to 10pm; Saturday, 11am to 6 pm. 
 
The 2nd annual Christmas in Arcanum & Horse Parade is at 310 N. Main Street, Arcanum, on Saturday, 11am to -8pm.

Hope Taft to Speak at Library. At the Washington-Centerville Public Library Hope Taft,  a co-founder of the Watershed Network, is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the National Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, passed by Congress in 1968. Learn about Ohio’s role in scenic river preservation, and about our own local rivers, their tributaries, and local efforts to preserve their integrity. For all ages. No registration is required. Stivers Celebrates. Their annual celebration of young musicians, artists, writers and performers is at the Masonic Center on Friday at 7pm.
 
 
Tecumseh Land Trust’s annual Holiday Open House. Celebrate this year and look forward to the next with snacks, sweets, and hot drinks, as well as opportunities for a little holiday shopping for land and water loving friends and family. It is at Whitehall Farm, 4633 US 68 North, Yellow Springs, on Saturday, 11am to 3pm.
 

Aullwood Candle Dipping.Traditional candle dipping using beeswax creates special memories at Aullwood. Learn about candles, bees, lighting and conservation in this fun hands-on program. Saturdays and Sundays, December 8, 9, 15, 16, and 22, 23 starting at 2:30pm. 

Make the Yuletide GAY! Celebrate the holiday season with the DGMC the only way they know how: with fun, frivolity, and a little seriousness thrown in. The DGMC Holiday concert is how the Miami Valley gets into the holiday spirit. Tickets: $20. Westminster Presbyterian Church, Saturday, 6pm.

The 4th Annual Dayton Surrealist Ball is transforming into Marie-Hélène Rothchild’s Chatteau and recreating her famous Surrealist ball that was originally held December 12, 1972. This is a fundraising event for STRONG, a comprehensive program developed to prevent and treat the physical, emotional, and sexual victimization of children, teens, and young adults. It is at 713 W Grand Ave. on Saturday, 8 to 11pm.
New music from Dayton band, McGuff and the Dumpster Fires! The band is celebrating the release with a performance including special guests Kyleen Downs and The Typical Johnsons. This is at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District on Saturday.
Heaven and Nature Sing. Whether your holiday tastes are classical, contemporary, traditional or innovative, Musica’s “Heaven and Nature Sing” has it all. Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 155 East Thruston Boulevard, Oakwood, Sunday, 3pm.
Can you think of a better way to study for finals?…or just relax and enjoy superb jazz? It is at the Arts Street Cafe, Sunday, 5 to7pm.
The University of Dayton Faculty Brass Quintet. This is at St. Mary’s Church, 310 Allen St. Dayton, on Sunday at 7pm. It is FREE and a freewill offering for the church will be taken.

Enjoy an Evening of Celtic Music & Dance!

Colleen Raney performs in Dayton for the first time at the Celtic Concert on December 10th at Stivers High School

For all the Celtic lovers out there, an upcoming event featuring Celtic music and dance, is just for you! The evening starts off with a performance by Celtic Academy of Irish Dance followed by local musical favorites Dulahan, followed by headliner and acclaimed Irish singer, Colleen Raney.  This show is being presented at Centennial Hall inside Stivers School for the Arts in downtown Dayton, and will benefit We Care Arts. This is a family friendly evening that’s sure to entertain Celtic lovers of all ages!

Colleen Raney has been referred to as “among the best in her genre” (Irish Music Magazine) and “one of America’s best traditional singers” (Tradconnect) . Her ability to convey her love of Irish music makes every performance a captivating experience! Colleen is making her first visit to the Dayton area and will perform here with her band, which includes: Hanz Araki on flute and vocals, Bethany Waickman on guitar and Ryan Davidson on upright bass and vocals. In addition to singing, Colleen also plays guitar and bodhran.

Dulahan‘s music pays homage to traditional and contemporary Celtic with 3 and 4 part harmonies and subtle hints of Roots/Americana. The Celtic Academy of Irish Dance is one of Dayton’s fine Irish Dance schools. Many of the students compete at the local, national and international levels, and they are a joy to watch!

Sunni Russo, the organizer of this concert, loved the variety of new music that Cityfolk brought to the Dayton area. She discovered many artists and musical styles she would not have known about otherwise.  In that tradition, she wanted to bring an artist, Colleen Raney, who has not played in Dayton before.

Audiences & Critics Love SING STREET – Opening Friday at THE NEON!

We had a really nice weekend at THE NEON. Folks in the packed house on Saturday night really loved the screening of PURPLE RAIN…so we’re bringing it back one more time this Saturday at 10pm (last week’s screening sold out, and numerous people were disappointed not to get tickets). In addition to holding both MILES AHEAD and A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING, we’re opening a brand new film that is currently rated “97% Fresh” on rottentomatoes – SING STREET. This charming, uplifting and funny film is a complete gem, and it’s from John Carney – director of ONCE.

Synopsis for SING STREET: “In 1980s Dublin, 14-year-old Conor is looking for a break from a home strained by his parents’ relationship and money troubles, while trying to adjust to his new inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, uber-cool and beautiful Raphina, and with the aim of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band’s music videos. There’s only one problem: he’s not part of a band…yet. Stivers School for the Arts is coming back to THE NEON with a new edition of student work – THE SHOWCASE. “This eclectic compilation of short films includes comedies, documentaries, animations, music videos, as well as experimental work. Some of these films have won national and regional awards. Following the show we’ll have a Q & A with the student filmmakers. All proceeds go towards updating equipment in the film and animation studio. Tickets will be $5.00 during the pre-sale and $7.00 day of the screening. Mark your calendars! I can hardly believe it, but the documentary TRUTH OR DARE is now 25 years old! Take a Holiday with Madonna and her entourage as we celebrate the film’s anniversary on the big screen…one of the great concert films of the past 30 years…and an incredibly important film to me when I first saw it at age 17! “This documentary chronicles Madonna’s controversial 1990 ‘Blonde Ambition’ international tour (which ROLLING STONE has recently called “the best concert tour of the 1990’s”). The film is a behind-the-scenes look at Madonna’s relationships with her dancers and crew, her then-boyfriend Warren Beatty, and her family and friends, achieving an intimate glimpse into the boundary-pushing singer’s drive and individuality.” Gene Siskel said it was “One of the best and most entertaining films of the year.” Come dressed as Madonna or wear your favorite Madonna T-shirt for discounts at the Concession Stand! The program features six award-winning short films that are international in scope, plus a short film by local filmmaker Aisha Ford. The films examine women’s stories told through the lens of women filmmakers in places ranging from Dayton, Ohio to the Philippines, Cuba and Iran. The diverse, thought-provoking stories for 2016 include challenges facing a woman boxer, a deaf woman dealing with cancer, the effects of drug addiction, raising a transgender child and more. Funds raised by this event will go to the Breast Cancer Fund and to Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region. Tickets are $10.00 ($5.00 for students) and donations over this amount are gratefully accepted. The event is sponsored nationally by Luna and locally by Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance & the Dayton chapter of the American Association of University Women. Dancing Bodies and Melodic Voices Come Together

Body & Voices_croppedJPEGMusica, Dayton’s Chamber Choir, is partnering with the Dance Department at Stivers School for the Arts to present Body & Voices, a program utilizing the talents of both musicians and dancers.

 

The Musica ensemble will be under the direction of Artistic Director, Dr. Jeffery Stern and the Stivers dancers are under the direction of Adjunct Faculty and Choreographer, Rodney Veal.

The Body & Voices concert will capture the spirit and convey the story of the American Civil War through song and movement. Our program tells this story in four sections: a study of one of the most popular composers of the time, Stephen Foster; a look into the burdens of war; exploration of songs representing the struggle to end slavery; and a finale representing American patriotism. Mr. Veal says, “we are very excited to be collaborating with Musica on this concert, which allows us to interpret these wonderfully arranged classic choral works through modern dance.”

 

Body & Voices will be presented in the recently renovated Eichelberger Hall at Stivers School for the Arts on Saturday, March 12 at 7:00 and Sunday, March 13 at 3:00.

GREY GARDENS and New Juliette Binoche Film at THE NEON!

Over the past 14 years that I’ve been at THE NEON, THE D TRAIN ranks as one of the biggest box office disappointments we’ve ever had. We had to lose it quickly. Today, we opened a new film with Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart – CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA. (Stewart became the first American to ever win a Cesar award for her role in this film. The Cesar Awards are France’s equivalent to our Academy Awards.) In addition, we will open the 40th Anniversary Restoration of GREY GARDENS – the documentary that became the basis for numerous books, an HBO narrative film and even a Broadway musical. We will continue our run of WHILE WE’RE YOUNG for one more week. Next week, we’ll open the gorgeous new film FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD!

Synopsis for CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA: “Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is an actress at the peak of her international career who is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years earlier. Back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young woman who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria, a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloe Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself. On Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30, T.J.’s Place of Hope will host a screening of I AM A GIRL. This film is “an inspirational feature length documentary that paints a clear picture of the reality of what it means to be a girl in the 21st century. Feminism may have promised equality and sought a better and fairer world for women but the reality is that girls make up almost a quarter of the world’s population yet still face the greatest discrimination of any group in the world. Technology and science offer unimaginable potential but we still struggle to ensure men and women are afforded equal opportunities. Yet in spite of these obstacles, girls have found extraordinary ways to persevere and in our documentary we hear their stories of strength, hope, courage and a refusal to be second best.” (taken from Gathr press notes) Advanced tickets are $10 each and must be purchased on Gathr’s website. Carol Quinones is trying to bring a special, one-time screening of TRACE AMOUNTS to town on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:30. That said, 50 tickets need to be reserved by May 30 in order to proceed. Stivers Showcase of Student Films

Stivers School for the Arts, Film/Video and Animation Studio
will Present THE SHOWCASE

This eclectic compilation of short films includes absurdly comedic work, as well as hard hitting documentaries.

Some of these films have already won national and regional awards. Following the show, there will be a Q & A with the student filmmakers.

Tickets will be $5.00 during the pre-sale and $7.00 at the door. Tickets are available at the Neon box office and at Stivers in room 1206, the Film/Video and Animation Studio.

The Showcase has been going on for over 7 years and is the culmination of students work for the 2013-2014 calendar year.

These students are in either the Film/Video or Animation class.  They range from 7th graders to graduating seniors.  Most of these students are visual artists taking this class as an elective.

All proceeds go towards updating and replacing equipment in the video and animation studio.  We have a huge turnover of students and have to deal with broken equipment.

Additionally with the constant changes in the industry we also have equipment that just requires updating.  Donations of equipment or money are always accepted.

Alvoro Leite and Alex Mangen are the studio directors.  Both are graduates of the Wright State University Motion Pictures Production Program and have over 20 years of teaching and actual production experience between them.

This year, the Marc Chagall painting, “I and the Village” is the featured art. This 12-ft-high-by-9-ft-wide rendition was painted live in 7 minutes by 12 Stivers visual artists while on stage at Stivers Celebrates, the school’s annual winter performance.  The Stivers Philharmonic Orchestra accompanied the painters with Led Zelppelin’s “Kashmir” in front of a sold out house.

13th Annual Soup Dressed Up Benefit

 soupartStivers School for the Arts, located at 1313 E. Fifth Street,  will host the 13th annual “Soup Dressed Up” fund-raising event, from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, May 3rd.

Student and staff at Stivers have created hundreds of bowls for you to choose from, each one unique and artistically prepared. Each guest may choose a handmade ceramic bowl and fill it with soup, bread and dessert generously donated from local restaurants, like Lucky’s  CoCo’s, Elsa’s, Christopher’s  Roost,  Olive Garden, Red Lobster, EarthFare, Big Sky Bread, and Dorothy Lane Market.

 

Enjoy dinner, music by Gathering Mercury, bid in a silent auction, take a studio tour, and check out wheel throwing demonstrations and award-winning student artwork in the Fifth Street Gallery (located within the school).
