“Intense but amazing” was how a group of my friends described RUST AND BONE after seeing it on Sunday evening. Alas, not enough Daytonians came to see the film…so it won’t be sticking around for a second week. Thursday will be your last chance to see RUST AND BONE at THE NEON. This always makes me sad – when great films have to come and go so quickly. Hurry down if you still want to catch it. Showtimes are at www.neonmovies.com.

On Friday, we will begin a one-week engagement of the Oscar nominated period drama A ROYAL AFFAIR. We will also present a few screenings of Oscar-nominated animation and live action short films over the weekend. This is the first time we’ve offered Oscar shorts (though a handful have played at festivals over the years)…if there’s enough interest, we’ll look to make it an annual engagement.

A very brief description of the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS: Each year during the Oscars, the makers of exceptional short films are recognized for their work. We often hear our audiences saying “How do people see these films?” Until now, festivals were one of the only outlets for seeing these gems. Though I still encourage you to support the Dayton-based film festivals (where only a handful of great films are selected out of hundreds of possibilities) we’re now offering you a chance to see this year’s nominees. The animated shorts will play on Friday and Sunday at 3:00, and the live action shorts will play on Saturday at 3:00. Please help us spread the word. Don’t forget this Thursday’s special screening of THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE (Feb. 7 at 7:30). We still have plenty of tickets available, and we really want to see a nice turnout for us to consider doing this kind of screening down the road.

It’s getting closer to Oscar time. Feb. 24 marks the date of our Free Annual Oscar Party. Ballots are now available in our lobby and prizes have started to arrive (though you must be present at the party in order to win prizes). 15 films that are nominated for Academy Awards have screened at (or are coming soon to) THE NEON. Between these 15 films, there are 34 nominations. We hope you’ll make plans to spend this fun night with us. We will begin seating for this party as close to 7pm as possible…which is when the Red-Carpet pre-show begins. (We will begin collecting ballots on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Noon…collected ballots (only one per person present) will result in our seating priority.)

Both AMOUR and QUARTET are scheduled to open next Friday (Feb. 15)! I’ll tell you more about these two great films next week.

We’ve had a tremendous start to 2013. Thanks to all of you who continue to support the films we bring to town. This past weekend was fantastic, and audiences are loving SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK. In fact, we’re going to hold both films. That said, this will be the final week for HYDE PARK ON HUDSON. Hurry down if you still need to see it! By now, I’m sure you’re aware of our upcoming screening of the new documentary directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon – THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE. We’re set to play it thanks to your support of a new distribution model called GATHR. Because 25 people have already purchased tickets to the screening, the date and time are secure. We’ll play the film on Thursday, February. 7 at 7:30. Tickets are $9 each. Please help us spread the word…we would love to bring even more smaller films to town, but we have to make certain there’s adequate support before we bring them. With a reported 27 million people enslaved in the world, many US Americans may think this is a global problem that does not touch the shores of the US. PROMISED LAND, though well-liked, wasn’t so hot. We’re going to hold it for a few screenings a day for one more week…but we’re also going to add something new to the mix. Diana Vreeland, the style icon and “Auntie Mame” of the fashion world, is featured in a new documentary that will appeal to all lovers of fashion, music and art – DIANA VREELAND: THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL. A few NEON regulars have asked if I would publish my “Top 10” list for the year. Unfortunately, I just can’t. I feel as though I still need to see so many movies before I decide. (I have yet to see ZERO DARK THIRTY, ARGO, HOLY MOTORS and dozens more.) One thing is for certain. Of the films I have seen, AMOUR is my favorite…and we will bring it to town in February (if you’ve seen the trailer for this film and were unimpressed, you’re not alone…I don’t think the trailer does any service for the brilliant film). Other films that I really liked that have yet to show in town are RUST AND BONE (perhaps you’ve seen the gorgeous and intriguing trailer at THE NEON), QUARTET (Maggie Smith in Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut) and IN THE HOUSE (Ozon’s new, incredible film).

In reviewing our 2012 numbers, here are the Top 10 films at THE NEON (in order of box office performance) –
MOONRISE KINGDOM (the best by far!), THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, THE ARTIST (this film didn’t open until January of 2012 in Dayton), ANNA KARENINA, THE INTOUCHABLES, TO ROME WITH LOVE, THE MASTER, TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME (Though the #10 almost went to HITCHCOCK …it was that close!).

HITCHCOCK and ANNA KARENINA are performing quite well for us, so we’ll hold both for another week!
I’m happy to announce that along with our upgrade to digital projection, we also installed hearing assisted devices. These headphones are available for check-out when you purchase your tickets, and the devices work for all titles. For select titles, “Audio Description” is available. This is a service for the blind and visually impaired…and HITCHCOCK makes use of this technology. (A person narrates the on-screen action via headphones.) Please let us know if you’d like to try these out…and please help us spread the word to people who might be interested in these services.

We just confirmed our line-up for the next few weeks. On December 28, we will open SMASHED for one week – featuring a fantastic performance by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who was just nominated for an Independent Spirit Award). On January 4 we will open 2 new films – HYDE PARK ON HUDSON (with Bill Murray as FDR) and PROMISED LAND (starring Matt Damon, John Krasinski and Frances McDormand – directed by Gus Van Sant)! I think we’ll start the year off with some enthusiastic audiences.

Toronto Film Fest – Day #1

Hello Everyone,

It has been a busy day full of screenings and fun run-ins.  I’ve seen 4 films, chatted with a few people who I met at this year’s ArtHouse Convergence in Utah, spotted a couple of my favorite critics, and secured more tickets for the next couple days.

I woke this morning at 6:00am and hopped on the subway by 6:45 in order to secure myself a place in line for tickets.  I got my first picks and then headed into a screening of a South Korean film called IN ANOTHER COUNTRY with the always fantastic Isabelle Huppert.  The story is about a girl who is writing a screenplay about a vacation town and a series of visitors – all played by Huppert.  Though there are moments of charm and an understanding of what it’s like to be foreign (communication gaps, inability to read certain characters of handwriting, etc.), this movie didn’t work entirely for me.  Some of the camera work turned me off, and the repetition of thematic material (though I understand that was the point) between each tourist was a little exhausting.

Next I saw LAURENCE ANYWAY – the new film from Xavier Dolan (director of I KILLED MY MOTHER and HEARTBEATS).  This is the story of the relationship between a man and woman…and what happens to their relationship once the man announces that he will have a sex change.  There’s an interesting movie inside this movie…but at 2 hours and 40 minutes, it’s way too long and a bit of a tonal mess…with long stretches of realism, several moments of editing like an 80’s music video (ala HEARTBEATS) and a handful of visual metaphors that are lovely – but didn’t sync with the film (like W.E. last year, I’d like the opportunity to re-edit this film).  All that said, the last 10 minutes are magical (I’m glad I stuck around).  Though Melvil Poupaud (from TIME TO LEAVE) does nice work as the transgender male to female character, Suzanne Clement who does the best work in this film (she was the mother in I KILLED MY MOTHER, she was also in a great Canadian film called IT WASN’T ME, I SWEAR).  Though not a huge fan of this film, I’ll be anxious to see what Dolan does next.  I loved his first 2 films, and he’s only in his early 20’s.

Then I saw AMOUR – the latest and most accessible film from Michael Haneke (THE WHITE RIBBON, FUNNY GAMES, BENNY’S VIDEO, THE PIANO TEACHER, and more).  This Cannes winner is terribly heartbreaking and the most realistic, lovely, devastating, sweet, and honest depiction of an older couple I have ever seen.  In this case, they’re dealing with a recently onset illness…and the wife’s desire to never be taken to the hospital again.  (Isabelle Huppert has a small role…so she’s in the lead for most films I’ve seen with the same actress at TIFF.)  This film is being released by Sony Classics, so I’m sure THE NEON will bring it to town.

Lastly, I saw RUST AND BONE – the film I mentioned in yesterday’s update.  I was not a big fan of A PROPHET – the director’s last film.  And though I don’t completely embrace this film (physical, bloody violence almost always turns me off), I do see the brilliant artistry at work.  It’s really nice to see that a director that is so full of a need to portray hideous violence is also able to show us warmth and gentleness.  This film is about a father who is down on his luck and the orca trainer he meets at a club one night (brilliantly played by Marion Cotillard).  Within the first act, there’s an accident at Marineland, and Cotillard’s character loses both her legs.  This film is brutal…but it’s filled with honesty and wonderful moments.  The photography is fantastic and the sound design is out of this world.  Because Sony Classics has picked it up, I’m guessing it will come our way at THE NEON…and I’m guessing you’ll hear more about it come award season.  Cotillard, Mattias Schoenaerts (the lead male) and director Jacques Audiard were all at the screening.  Check out the newer trailer for this film at imdb.com

Toronto Film Fest – PreFest

Hello Everyone.

After numerous delays (due to heavy fog in Dayton and Detroit), I’m back on schedule.

I took a taxi from the airport to the Hyatt Regency on King Street West just in time to get my accreditation before they closed for the evening.  I  was also able to get a couple tickets for public screenings tomorrow and Friday.  In addition to numerous press and industry screenings, I’ll see RUST AND BONE on Thursday (starring Marion Cotillard, directed by Jacques Audiard (A PROPHET)) and ANNA KARENINA on Friday  (starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law, directed by Joe Wright (ATONEMENT)).

I’ll average 3+ films a day over the next 8.5 days, and I’ve got a list of films I can’t wait to see…but I’m also anxious to see films that aren’t being talked about yet.
