AMOUR and QUARTET Continue Successful Runs at THE NEON!

Thank you! We had another great weekend. We truly appreciate your patronage and all the good word-of-mouth recommendations you’ve been giving regarding our films. QUARTET continues to be a big hit for us – it will stick around. Though numbers for the Oscar-winning AMOUR have fallen, it will stay for one more week (hurry down if you need to see it…many of our patrons agree that Emmanuelle Riva should have taken home the Oscar this Sunday). Though attendance was down for this year’s Oscar Party (we think some folks made other plans since we’ve been so busy in past years…and we realize there are lots of other options), we had a great time! Omari Matlock, a former Daytonian, will premiere his latest film – DESCENT OF A SUPERSTAR – this Saturday, March 2 at Noon. “When money power and fame is not enough, a young pop star turns to habits put in place by dark spirits.” A minimum donation of $10 is required for each ticket. Each ticket includes admission to the film and to the After Party/Networking event at Therapy Cafe at 3:00 (be sure to bring head shots, demo reels & resumes to this event if you are in or aspiring to be in the entertainment industry). Thank you! We had a tremendous weekend…our best in over 6 months. We will hold both films – QUARTET (which is a crowd-pleasing, huge hit) and AMOUR (which won’t stick around nearly as long…but is a powerful, amazingly crafted film). The Animated Shorts will play on Friday at 1:00, and the Live Action Shorts will play on Sunday at 1:00.

“On Saturday at Noon, the Junior Leaguers of Dayton – an African American Women’s Service Organization – will hold an annual fundraiser which raises money for scholarships. They will screen the film RED HOOK SUMMER (directed by Spike Lee and written by James McBride) – a coming of age movie about a young African American male who visits his grandparents living in the projects of Brooklyn New York. The discussion following the movie will be led by Dr. Michael Williams, a psychologist. The price is $30.00 which includes a movie ticket, glass of wine, soda, and popcorn. Everything we’ve got is leaving! If you still need to see A ROYAL AFFAIR or SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, hurry down. On Thursday (Valentine’s Day) we’ll begin our exclusive engagement of QUARTET (which I’m certain will delight so many of you). On Friday, we begin one of the absolute best reviewed films of 2012 – AMOUR.

“Intense but amazing” was how a group of my friends described RUST AND BONE after seeing it on Sunday evening. Alas, not enough Daytonians came to see the film…so it won’t be sticking around for a second week. Thursday will be your last chance to see RUST AND BONE at THE NEON. On Friday, we will begin a one-week engagement of the Oscar nominated period drama A ROYAL AFFAIR. We will also present a few screenings of Oscar-nominated animation and live action short films over the weekend. This is the first time we’ve offered Oscar shorts (though a handful have played at festivals over the years)…if there’s enough interest, we’ll look to make it an annual engagement.

A very brief description of the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS: Each year during the Oscars, the makers of exceptional short films are recognized for their work. We often hear our audiences saying “How do people see these films?” Until now, festivals were one of the only outlets for seeing these gems. Though I still encourage you to support the Dayton-based film festivals (where only a handful of great films are selected out of hundreds of possibilities) we’re now offering you a chance to see this year’s nominees. Amazing RUST AND BONE at THE NEON

We’re very excited to open a film that is edgy yet accessible. It’s a love story with incredible performances, and I hope you’ll take my word and give it a chance. RUST AND BONE has not performed terribly well in other markets, so hurry down if you want to catch it. Marion Cotillard (who won the Oscar for portraying Edith Piaf in LA VIE EN ROSE) gives a performance that is absolutely brilliant! It’s been a while since I’ve given my own, personal endorsement for a film…both this (and the upcoming AMOUR) are films that I will eventually add to my personal library.

Synopsis for RUST AND BONE: “Ali finds himself with a five-year-old child on his hands – a son he hardly knows. Homeless, penniless and friendless, Ali takes refuge with his sister in the south of France. There things improve immediately. A man of formidable size and strength, Ali gets a job as a bouncer in a nightclub. He comes to the aid of Stephanie during a nightclub brawl. Aloof and beautiful, Stephanie seems unattainable, but in his frank manner Ali leaves her his phone number anyway. Stephanie trains orca whales at Marineland. In fact, who would ever think that Dayton is at risk or involved? The film covers five continents and shows multiple forms of trafficking/slavery. You will hear from victims, advocates and abolitionists that are on the ground living and fighting for freedom every day. Have you heard of the new documentary directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon – THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE? “In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were arrested and charged with brutally attacking and raping a white female jogger in Central Park. News media swarmed the case, calling them a ‘wolfpack.’ The five would spend years in prison for a crime they didn’t commit before the truth about what really happened became clear…this incendiary film tells the riveting tale of innocent young men scapegoated for a heinous crime, and serves as a mirror for our times.” This documentary is not currently slated to play in town. A few NEON regulars have asked if I would publish my “Top 10” list for the year. Unfortunately, I just can’t. I feel as though I still need to see so many movies before I decide. (I have yet to see ZERO DARK THIRTY, ARGO, HOLY MOTORS and dozens more.) One thing is for certain. Of the films I have seen, AMOUR is my favorite…and we will bring it to town in February (if you’ve seen the trailer for this film and were unimpressed, you’re not alone…I don’t think the trailer does any service for the brilliant film). Other films that I really liked that have yet to show in town are RUST AND BONE (perhaps you’ve seen the gorgeous and intriguing trailer at THE NEON), QUARTET (Maggie Smith in Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut) and IN THE HOUSE (Ozon’s new, incredible film).

In reviewing our 2012 numbers, here are the Top 10 films at THE NEON (in order of box office performance) –
MOONRISE KINGDOM (the best by far!), THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, THE ARTIST (this film didn’t open until January of 2012 in Dayton), ANNA KARENINA, THE INTOUCHABLES, TO ROME WITH LOVE, THE MASTER, TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME (Though the #10 almost went to HITCHCOCK …it was that close!).

I’m happy to announce that along with our upgrade to digital projection, we also installed hearing assisted devices. These headphones are available for check-out when you purchase your tickets, and the devices work for all titles. For select titles, “Audio Description” is available. This is a service for the blind and visually impaired…and HITCHCOCK makes use of this technology. (A person narrates the on-screen action via headphones.) We’re opening 2 new films at this weekend, and we hope they’ll attract big crowds. This is a lucrative weekend/week at THE NEON. Thanksgiving business can often set the tone for the remaining weeks of the year…and we’re really hoping to end 2012 with a bang! Like many of the films we’ve played at this time, we think some Oscar nominations could arise from our selections. (Here are some films that we’ve played during Thanksgiving in past years: AMELIE, CAPOTE, THE QUEEN, BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS, 127 HOURS and THE DESCENDANTS.) On Sunday, November 18 at 3:00, The Dayton International Peace Museum, Wright State Peace Lecture Committee, Pi Beta Phi at the University of Dayton and The Dayton Council on World Affairs will present a special, free screening of IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY.
“Dayton has made its place in history as the host city for the Dayton Peace Accords. A historic achievement in 1995, the Accords helped bring an end to the tragic civil war of the Former Yugoslavia. With the end in fighting, a horrific reality of ethnic cleaning and genocide was revealed, especially after the international community had pledged ‘No More’ after the end of the Holocaust in 1945. The Angelina Jolie-directed movie, IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY portrays a bittersweet love story during the war. It brings to light the tragic reality of war and its impact on our humanity. In the aftermath of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, a major trial at the International Criminal Court at The Hague took place that led to
international recognition of rape as a weapon of war. At this screening, we will be commemorating the historic Dayton Peace Accords and how Dayton was instrumental in the process. There will also be a Q&A panel after the movie to discuss ongoing violence issues against women that sadly continue domestically and internationally. Toronto Film Fest – Day #1

Hello Everyone,

It has been a busy day full of screenings and fun run-ins.  I’ve seen 4 films, chatted with a few people who I met at this year’s ArtHouse Convergence in Utah, spotted a couple of my favorite critics, and secured more tickets for the next couple days.

I woke this morning at 6:00am and hopped on the subway by 6:45 in order to secure myself a place in line for tickets.  I got my first picks and then headed into a screening of a South Korean film called IN ANOTHER COUNTRY with the always fantastic Isabelle Huppert.  The story is about a girl who is writing a screenplay about a vacation town and a series of visitors – all played by Huppert.  Though there are moments of charm and an understanding of what it’s like to be foreign (communication gaps, inability to read certain characters of handwriting, etc.), this movie didn’t work entirely for me.  Some of the camera work turned me off, and the repetition of thematic material (though I understand that was the point) between each tourist was a little exhausting.

Next I saw LAURENCE ANYWAY – the new film from Xavier Dolan (director of I KILLED MY MOTHER and HEARTBEATS).  This is the story of the relationship between a man and woman…and what happens to their relationship once the man announces that he will have a sex change.  There’s an interesting movie inside this movie…but at 2 hours and 40 minutes, it’s way too long and a bit of a tonal mess…with long stretches of realism, several moments of editing like an 80’s music video (ala HEARTBEATS) and a handful of visual metaphors that are lovely – but didn’t sync with the film (like W.E. last year, I’d like the opportunity to re-edit this film).  All that said, the last 10 minutes are magical (I’m glad I stuck around).  Though Melvil Poupaud (from TIME TO LEAVE) does nice work as the transgender male to female character, Suzanne Clement who does the best work in this film (she was the mother in I KILLED MY MOTHER, she was also in a great Canadian film called IT WASN’T ME, I SWEAR).  Though not a huge fan of this film, I’ll be anxious to see what Dolan does next.  I loved his first 2 films, and he’s only in his early 20’s.

Then I saw AMOUR – the latest and most accessible film from Michael Haneke (THE WHITE RIBBON, FUNNY GAMES, BENNY’S VIDEO, THE PIANO TEACHER, and more).  This Cannes winner is terribly heartbreaking and the most realistic, lovely, devastating, sweet, and honest depiction of an older couple I have ever seen.  In this case, they’re dealing with a recently onset illness…and the wife’s desire to never be taken to the hospital again.  (Isabelle Huppert has a small role…so she’s in the lead for most films I’ve seen with the same actress at TIFF.)  This film is being released by Sony Classics, so I’m sure THE NEON will bring it to town.

Lastly, I saw RUST AND BONE – the film I mentioned in yesterday’s update.  I was not a big fan of A PROPHET – the director’s last film.  And though I don’t completely embrace this film (physical, bloody violence almost always turns me off), I do see the brilliant artistry at work.  It’s really nice to see that a director that is so full of a need to portray hideous violence is also able to show us warmth and gentleness.  This film is about a father who is down on his luck and the orca trainer he meets at a club one night (brilliantly played by Marion Cotillard).  Within the first act, there’s an accident at Marineland, and Cotillard’s character loses both her legs.  This film is brutal…but it’s filled with honesty and wonderful moments.  The photography is fantastic and the sound design is out of this world.  Because Sony Classics has picked it up, I’m guessing it will come our way at THE NEON…and I’m guessing you’ll hear more about it come award season.  Cotillard, Mattias Schoenaerts (the lead male) and director Jacques Audiard were all at the screening.  Check out the newer trailer for this film at imdb.com
