13 Superstitions for Friday the 13th
Today is Friday the 13th – many of us are going to be avoiding various breaks in concrete and moving out of any paths that may or may not be crossed by black felines. Although they observe superstitious customs regularly, most people have no idea how or where their favorite superstitions originated. So allow us to share:
- “Ringing a bell will drive away spirits”
Origin: Bells were actually used to signify the times of gathering and worship in many different religions. This goes for Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran, Jewish, and Islamic tradition to be called to prayer multiple times a day. The superstition about them driving away evil actually came from pagan winter celebrations where the ringing of bells was believed to drive away negative energy and spirits.
- “It’s bad luck to walk under a ladder”
Origin: It’s all about symbolism with ladders. In medieval times, it was seen as bad luck because ladders symbolized the gallows where they hung people. In Egypt, a ladder leaning against a wall made a triangle, which symbolized a pyramid. If you walked under the ladder, the power of the sacred pyramid was broken, causing bad luck.
- “If a black cat crosses your path it is bad luck”
Origin: If a black cat crossed your path you would lose your connection with God and perish. Contrary to that, black cats were seen as both valued and good luck in ancient Egypt, England, and Ireland. (Note: due to this superstition, black cats are often surrendered to animal shelters and have difficulty finding homes. Give yourself some good karma if you’re thinking of adopting a furry friend and take one of these beauties home.)
- “Step on a crack and you’ll break your mother’s back”
Origin: This one has a few different meanings. In the early 20th century, the phrase was actually “step on a crack and make your baby black” – a racist sentiment. As for the belief about mothers, one part of the superstition was that the number of cracks would indicate the number of broken bones. It was also thought that cracks were a way to hell, and if you stepped on them you would release demons.
- “If you spill the salt you will have bad luck”
Origin: This superstition goes all the way back to ancient times when salt was used in many rituals and believed to harbor powerful magic. It is also connected to Christianity through DaVinci’s painting, “The Last Supper,” in which you can see Judas spilling the salt. This ties in to the tradition of throwing spilled salt over your left shoulder with your right hand because the “spirit” is believed to reside on the right side of God and the Devil resides on the left. Throwing the salt over your left shoulder is meant to keep the Devil in his place.
- “If your ears are burning someone is gossiping about you” or “If your ears are itching someone is talking about you”
Origin: The superstition of burning or itching ears traces back to Roman times when your body was thought to predict actions or events beyond your knowledge. Whether it was your left or right ear stems back to the belief of positive spirits residing on your right and negative spirits or demons residing on your left.
- Mirrors
Origin: Mirrors hold a long history of superstition, tracing back to ancient times when any reflective surface was seen as a portal directly to the gods or the afterlife. To break such a precious commodity was seen as a bad omen and a harbinger of sure death. Or, if you did not cover mirrors after someone had passed, it was believed that their spirits could get stuck inside of the mirror.
- “It’s bad luck to open an umbrella indoors”
Origin: Going back to ancient Egypt, using an umbrella outside was to protect you from the powerful rays of the sun. If you opened your umbrella indoors, you would anger the Sun God and bad luck and despair would rain down on you.
- “If a ladybug lands on you, count the spots and that is how long you will have good luck”
Origin: Ladybugs have long been a symbol of good fortune. In the Middle Ages, if a ladybug landed on you it could symbolize protection, marriage for an unmarried woman, and even good luck for babies.
- “Knock on wood”
Origin: This saying finds its roots in German folklore, where one would “knock on wood” to gain the protection of the mystical tree fairies or Dryads.
- Blowing out Birthday candles
Origin: In ancient Greece, candles on a cake were a tribute to the goddess Artemis. The cakes were round and the candles were placed in a circle. In Germany, candles on a cake signified the “light of life” and well-being of the person for the year to come. It was also thought that the smoke from the candles would carry your wishes to the gods.
- “Cross your fingers”
Origin: This dates back to early Christianity. The cross has been a symbol of hope, strength, and unity, as well as a way to ward off evil from your spirit and home. Crossing your fingers began as a pact between two people; one would make a wish and the other would help solidify the wish by placing their index finger over the other person’s index finger.
- Fear of Friday the 13th: Triskaidekaphobia
Origin: The fear of Friday the 13th stems from the fear of the number 13. Throughout history, the number 13 has been connected with multiple negative events. Loki (although I love him in the Marvel movies) was the 13th God. Judas was the 13th to sit at the table at The Last Supper. Apollo 13 launched at 13:13:00 and on April 13th suffered an oxygen tank explosion but did return safely to earth afterward.
Happy Friday the 13th!

DOCUMENTARIES
Clifton – Directed by Mason Perry
Summary: Clifton is a documentary about rock and roll. Centered around the days leading up to the First Annual Mockball, local Cincinnati band, Saving Escape, talks about the process of throwing on the show and the collaboration within the community that’s pushing Cincinnati’s music scene back into the spotlight.
About Mason: My name is Mason Perry, I’m from Piqua, Ohio. I plan to specialize as a Director of Photography. One of my favorite films that have inspired me is Inglourious Basterds. I chose my documentary subject because I’m a concert photographer for some of the bands in Cincinnati. After being a part of that scene for a few years and through meeting various people I’ve seen how they’ve grown and really pushed what a DIY music scene should be, and I wanted to showcase that around one of the biggest events of the year and how it benefits them.
the neon rainbow – Directed by Nic Studer
Summary: the neon rainbow is a short documentary by Nic Studer about the Dayton LGBT Film Festival and its creator, Jonathon McNeal. Jonathon discusses what the festival is, why it is so important to the Dayton community and the LGBTQ+ community, along with the history of the festival and some of the best moments in all its time!
About Nic: My favorite movies are Halloween (2018), Twister, Poseidon, and Scream (2020). I want to become a writer, director, and producer of the next big horror movies. In the long run, I want to be able to own and operate my own production company to give other creators the chance to bring their visions and stories to life.
It’s Homemade – Directed by Jazz Jefferson
Summary: The infamous Bill’s Donut Shop (commonly referred to as Bill’s) is open and has been thriving for 63 years. The married couple Bill and Faye Elam Opened Bill’s in 1960. Over the years, Bill and Faye have established a business built on community and handcrafted donuts. As a result, Bill’s received numerous awards including, but not limited to, Dayton Best of Contest and a shout-out on Ellen. In 1955 Jim and Lisa Elam took over the business and carried out their parent’s legacy. At last, this documentary, It’s Homemade, goes in-depth about the community and success Bill’s Donut Shop has achieved over the years.
About Jazz: Hello everyone! I am Jazmyn Jefferson, majority of people call me Jazz. I was born and raised in a small town located in Northwest Ohio. At Wright State University, I chose to direct as my specialty. I also have an interest in sound design. Films that I enjoy and have sparked inspiration include, The Incredible Hulk, The Black Panther, Parasite, Dumb and Dumber, and Training Day. I consider myself a donut enthusiast. Therefore, I chose Dayton’s local donut shop, Bill’s Donuts Shop, to be the subject of my documentary. Lastly, I wanted to understand Bill’s success and discover why their donuts are so tasty.
Alex Bunsold
Morgan Johnson
Summary: The reason I chose my dad as my subject for my documentary is because I thought it would be interesting to hear about a veteran’s experience in the military and some of his achievements. I also wanted to add a little bit of comedy to lighten the mood of the topic, so I made a fake advertisement in the beginning and kind of treated it like a mini podcast.
About Morgan: My name is Morgan Johnson. My dad served in the Air Force, so we moved around a lot until he finally retired in Ohio. I plan to specialize in editing, it’s something I really enjoy and hope to get better at.
Bino Bannan
Sam May
Empathy’s Not Dead – Directed by Grace Loechinger
Summary: What does it take to handle life’s greatest tragedies? ‘Empathy’s Not Dead’ takes a peek inside the casket to learn more about the mortuary business and those who make their livelihood working with the deceased. This documentary focuses on the Routsong Funeral Home, a family-owned business that has been helping to honor the dead and comfort the bereaved for over a century.
About Grace: I grew up in Rhode Island and have spent the last several years living in Ohio. As I continue my education in WSU’s Motion Pictures program, I plan to specialize in writing and directing. I am inspired most by films that take dark subject matters and put creative, comedic, or juxtapositional twists on them, showing the concepts in a new light. This is, in part, what inspired the documentary “Empathy’s Not Dead”, which focuses on a local funeral home and explores what it takes to manage grief and tragedy.
Everything is Fine – Directed by Trevor Seech-Hrvatin
Summary: Ever since she was a kid, Tallulah Swasey wanted to be a musician. Follow her story from her first band to her current, Grumpy Plum, and all the hardships along the way.
About Trevor: My name is Trevor Seech-Hrvatin, I grew up in Mentor, Ohio, a town about 30 minutes outside of Cleveland. I want to specialize in writing and directing, my favorite director is Wes Anderson and some of my favorite films are “Fantastic Mr.Fox”, “Empire Strikes Back”, and “Jojo Rabbit”. I chose Tallulah Swasey, and her band Grumpy Plum, to be the subject of my documentary because I am personally inspired by her commitment to making art no matter what is thrown at her.
Bagged and Boarded – Directed by Rob Bicknell and Chloe Sinkhorn
Summary: Bagged & Boarded is an exploration of the local comic book market, as well as a look into the comic book industry as a whole. We talked to four different shops across Dayton to learn how each of them have been affected by recent changes and challenges. The result is an eye opening insight into one of America’s most enduring hobbies.
About Rob: My name is Rob Bicknell, and I am from Centerville, in the south part of Dayton. I am focusing on writing and directing. Some of my favorite movies are Raiders of the Lost Ark and Mad Max: Fury Road. I made Bagged & Boarded because I noticed a disconnect between the popularity of comic book characters onscreen, and the printed works that inspired them. Therefore, I decided to take the temperature of the industry, at least on a local level, to see how things like COVID and the aforementioned movies have affected business and readership.
About Chloe: My name is Chloe Sinkhorn and I am from the great city Akron, Ohio. I specialize in cinematography and screenwriting. I love big adventure movies like: The NeverEnding Story and Pirates of the Caribbean, but my all time favorite film is, How to Train Your Dragon. I chose to make a documentary on comic books because I recently started reading them and I wanted to learn more about them.
The Artifacts Beneath Us – Directed by Cayden Whitman
Summary: ‘The Artifacts Beneath Us’ explores the process of finding Native American Artifacts (specifically stone tools like arrowheads), their importance to history, and what preserving them means to both myself and collectors.
About Cayden: My name is Cayden Whitman and I grew up an hour north of Wright State near the city of Bellefontaine. I plan to specialize in Cinematography. I have been inspired by many films, including all the Star Wars and Lord of The Rings movies, but my favorite film is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I chose my documentary subject because I wanted to share my passion for history and Native American artifacts with others, and because it is an aspect of history that I feel is not as appreciated as it should be.

OneFifteen will use the proceeds toward the first phase of construction of its Houses of Hope program, while the Wesley Community Center will use its funding to improve services for the aging population in Dayton’s Westwood neighborhood.
OneFifteen offers comprehensive services for individuals recovering from addiction, including an outpatient clinic, an inpatient residential treatment center, and a crisis stabilization unit. It operates a 4.5-acre campus on Hopeland Street in the Carillon neighborhood.
The funding for OneFifteen will provide planning, architectural design, land development and preliminary construction costs for affordable housing for participants of OneFifteen treatment services. OneFifteen will build two supportive housing units serving clients who are transitioning from treatment services to community life. The houses will be constructed near the OneFifteen campus on currently vacant lots and will be planned in cooperation with the Carillon neighborhood.
OneFifteen is a not-for-profit healthcare ecosystem dedicated to the full and sustained recovery of people living with addiction and co-occurring mental health concerns. The ecosystem offers a full continuum of care to meet the needs of patients and support them in full and sustained recovery.

Funding for the One Fifteen award will be provided through the Dayton Recovery Plan’s $55 million Improving Our Neighborhoods component. This section of the plan focuses on improving housing conditions; provide in-fill and new housing; and rehab and repair.

Bar & Bistro Evolving Into Event Space
Top of the Market, a Dayton-based event and banquet center, located on the corner of Webster Street and Third Street in Downtown Dayton, has been part of the Dayton landscape since 2005.
The company also manages The Gourmet Deli, a staple in the Webster Station community and The Bar & Bistro, a casual dining restaurant open to the public, that are both contained within the primary facility. Following a business analysis in the fourth quarter of 2022, Top of the Market management, the Mendelson Family, will modify the business model in 2023.
The event and banquet operation and The Gourmet Deli will remain in its current form, and The Bar & Bistro will modify to become an event space opportunity.
The current 2022 Bar & Bistro operation is a four-day week, casual dining experience open to the public. Frequently, this operation was reduced in days-open to accommodate the overwhelming requests for private events to be held in the stunningly designed transformed dining space, which opened in 2021.
A 2022 analysis lead to the decision to modify the current model to a private event space, which can host about 70 guests, seven days weekly to complement the existing two event spaces (The Warehouse and The Loft) whose popularity grew exponentially in 2022.
According to Director of Operations, John Capobianco this modification will better meet the needs of our customers and support the growing demand for additional private event space in Downtown Dayton. In addition, the event spaces will now offer the opportunity for outside catering companies to utilize the event spaces, in addition to our existing in-House catering.
They are very excited and welcome all to come in and tour our event spaces for all your small or large business meetings and private celebratory special events.
The Bar & Bistro would like to thank customers for their loyalty and patronage and hope they understand our business decision.
