Dayton Philharmonic announces new Music and Artistic Director: Keitaro Harada

The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA) announced its appointment of conductor Keitaro Harada as the next Music and Artistic Director of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (DPO).

Maestro Harada will become the fifth Music Director in the orchestra’s 92-year history, preceded by founder Paul Katz (1933–1975), Charles Wendelken-Wilson (1975–1987), Isaiah Jackson (1987–1995), and Neal Gittleman (1995–present). Harada will begin his tenure during the 2024–2025 season as Music and Artistic Director Designate; he’ll assume the role of Music and Artistic Director on July 1, 2025. Harada committed to a five-year term with the option to renew.”

“DPAA is privileged to be working with such a stellar conductor with international scope and passion for local communities,” DPAA President and CEO Patrick J. Nugent commented about this announcement. “Maestro Harada has an impressive sense of artistic vision, community engagement, and commitment to our model of three arts in one organization. His technical and artistic abilities as a conductor are prodigious, and he electrifies audiences wherever he goes. “The DPAA stands out to me as it brings together three art forms I absolutely love: orchestra, opera, and ballet,” Harada continued. “Dayton’s rich history and vibrant art scene will provide us with the inspiration and imagination to build collaborations that can only be achieved at DPAA. Having recently performed together, we began to discover the endless possibilities of our music-making and great community. I am deeply grateful to serve as the next Music and Artistic Director.”

Keitaro Harada is a recipient of the prestigious 2023 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, and as Music and Artistic Director of the Savannah Philharmonic in Savannah, Georgia (a position he’s held since the 2020-21 season), Harada has transformed the quality of the orchestra and energized its audiences through his imaginative programs and charismatic presence.

In addition to his American posts, Harada also acts as Permanent Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and is the Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Partner of the Aichi Chamber Orchestra in Japan. Harada was Associate Conductor for four years at the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops, where he regularly assisted Music Director Louis Langrée (now Music Director Laureate) and collaborated with James Conlon and Juanjo Mena at the orchestra’s annual May Festival.

Harada was the top candidate among nearly 250 applicants from around the globe, according to Arts Consulting Group (ACG), which guided the extensive international executive search. ACG remarked that they had never before received such a response for an Artistic Director position. ACG screened applicants through a rigorous process that yielded a preliminary round of 57 candidates. After conducting initial interviews, ACG presented 27 candidates to the DPAA Search Committee for consideration. The diverse applicant pool represented 40 states and 26 countries and included a substantial number of candidates who self-identified as BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+.

Barbara O’Hara, Chair of the DPAA Search Committee, said: “I feel certain that our Dayton community will heartily welcome and embrace Harada and his family, as will all the musicians, ballet dancers, opera performers, subscribers, future subscribers, donors, and young musicians. To me, a fitting description of Harada is that of a Renaissance man! His background is so varied covering classical music, opera, and ballet as well as contemporary and pops. His rapport with the musicians is outstanding—he challenges them and is respectfully demanding of them. While in Dayton, one of his great desires is to become an involved partner with other performing arts organizations. So, here’s to a wonderful and exciting musical future for the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance as we welcome Keitaro Harada, the next Music and Artistic Director of the Dayton Philharmonic.”

Harada succeeds Neal Gittleman, who announced his intent to retire in May of 2022. Regarding Harada’s appointment, Gittleman said: “I’m excited to see where Maestro Harada leads the Philharmonic in the future. After 30 wonderful years on the podium, I look forward to enjoying what comes next from a seat in the audience. I sincerely hope that Harada finds, as I have, that the DPAA is a place to make great music and build great community. And wish I him, the musicians, and the audience all the best on their adventure together.”

Donate Your New or Used Instruments to DPAA!

Did you know that the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance collects new or used orchestra and band instruments?  DPAA, in partnership with Discover Classical 88.1FM/WDPR & 89.9/WDPG (Dayton’s public, full-time classical music station), is seeking musical instruments to benefit students in the Dayton region. Our It’s Instrumental program collects used orchestra and band instruments in good condition are immediately placed into the hands of a young musician.

Other instruments are repaired or reconditioned and then given to deserving students at Stivers School for the Arts and the Q the Music Strings and Band programs at Ruskin Elementary and Edwin Joel Brown Middle Schools. Even unplayable instruments may be sorted for parts. Your gift will give these children the opportunity to shine musically and improve academically. If you have a musical instrument sitting around unused, help get it into the hands of an aspiring young musician.

Last year, we collected over 85 instruments from Grismer locations during the It’s Instrumental campaign.

What Instruments Do You Need?

While almost all instruments are needed, there are several priorities:

  • 1/4 to 1/2 size violins, violas, cellos, and bows for students at Ruskin Elementary School’s Q the Music program
  • Band instruments, i.e. trumpets, cornets, trombones, saxophones, clarinets, flutes, keyboards, drums, guitars, and tambourines for students in Dayton Public Schools and Q the Music at EJ Brown Middle School
  • We are unable to accept pianos and organs
  • While all donations are appreciated, instruments in good playable condition are critical, as a quality instrument can often positively impact a student’s desire to continue with music. You can donate a used instrument—including accessories like bows, strings, mouthpieces, and reeds—to help a young musician who might not otherwise have access to a quality instrument.

Free Tickets To Dayton Ballet’s 85th Celebration Via Dayton Metro Library

Dayton Metro Library, in partnership with Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA), is offering free tickets to three upcoming performances of 85th Diamond Anniversary at the Victoria Theatre on Friday, February 10, 7:30-9 pm, Saturday, February 11, 7:30-9 pm, and Sunday, February 12, 2:30-4 pm.

 

85th Diamond Anniversary is a celebration of the Dayton Ballet’s 85th season and the 95th year of the Dayton Ballet School. This repertory program honors Dayton Ballet founders and includes a collection of beautiful ballets showcasing the physicality and virtuosity of the company of dancers who call Dayton Ballet their home.

Fifty tickets per show will be available on a registration basis, with a maximum of six seats per party. Seat locations will vary and can be picked up at the box office prior to each performance. While DPAA will try to seat groups together when possible, that’s not guaranteed. Tickets have no cash value and cannot be exchanged for other seats or performances.

  • Registration for the Friday, February 10 performance begins Wednesday, January 11, 8 am.
  • Registration for the Saturday, February 11 performance begins Thursday, January 12, 8 am.
  • Registration for the Sunday, February 12 performance begins Friday, January 13, 8 am.

Pines of Rome and Brandon Patrick George: Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17, 7:30 pm, at the Schuster Center

The “Eternal City” could find no more fitting tribute than Respighi’s vibrant PINES OF ROME, transporting you to famous pine stands around the Italian capital, a Renaissance family’s splendid estate, near a catacomb suggested by a mournful chant, the moonlit beauty of the Janiculum hill with the haunting song of a nightingale, and, along the Appian Way, triumphant trumpets and the thunder of marching armies. Brandon Patrick George, Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra alum – and hottest young flutist around – connects you to the Celtic inspiration of Christopher Rouse’s Concerto. The season opens with the DPO and Chorus giving the world premiere of a beautiful work by Daytonians Sierra Leone and Steve Winteregg inspired by the legacy of Miriam Rosenthal.

 

Charlie Parker’s Yardbird:

While the body of tormented bebop saxophonist Charlie “Yardbird” Parker lies unidentified in a New York City morgue, his ghost travels back to the famed NYC jazz club Birdland, where he struggles to complete his final masterpiece. Fusing classical and jazz styles into an intriguing mix, CHARLIE PARKER’S YARDBIRD is a powerful expedition into the mind, heart, and personal purgatory of the jazz genius.

 

Far Away Places: Scheherazade:

In the One Thousand And One Nights the Sultana Scheherazade nightly diverts her husband with cliff-hanger tales of the sea, shipwrecks, princes, and princesses to save her life – definitely pre-#MeToo! Rimsky-Korsakov’s alluring showpiece whisks you off to that exotic world with music that’s languid and sensuous, shimmering and romantic, stormy and terrifying! Debussy’s Nocturnes depicts clouds floating across the skies and boisterous village festivals punctuated by trumpets and drums. Reena Esmail’s musical roots let her look West and East as her composition about sisterhood soars to ecstatic heights, blending Hindustani and Western classical musical traditions.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow:
Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29, 7:30 pm, and Sunday, October 30, 2:30 pm, at the Victoria Theatre

October is the perfect setting for Dayton Ballet’s brand-new production of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. The haunting story of the Headless Horseman comes to life with all the same characters of this familiar tale. Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones, and the full ensemble of Dayton Ballet take the stage to bring to life Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke’s fresh approach on the timeless classic. Composer Austin Jaquith provides a brand-new original score, performed live by musicians from the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, to deliver the musical backdrop to this eerie legend that has been passed down through generations since the 1800s.

 

Symphonie fantastiqe and Vadim Gluzman:
 Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19, 7:30 pm, at the Schuster Center

Berlioz’s passion-propelled Symphonie fantastique – dazzling with fiery orchestral colors and effects – follows the love-sick hero’s drug-induced visions to a glittering ball, a scaffold, and a demonic Witches’ Sabbath with the Dies irae pounding out a hair-raising theme amid orgiastic tumult. Emotions also run high in Shostakovich’s Concerto, whose sonorities range from quiet contemplation, to the most spectacular cadenza you’re ever likely to witness, to a frenzied finale, guaranteed to leave you profoundly moved. Antoine Clark (“led from the podium with balletic poise,” Chicago Tribune), a rising star among young American conductors, makes his Dayton debut.

 

Hometown Holiday Featuring Amahl and the Night Visitors:

Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3, 7:30 pm, at the Schuster Center

The Dayton Philharmonic and Dayton Opera join forces to present a holiday spectacular that is sure to fill our hearts with the spirit of the season. On the first half of the program, the Dayton Philharmonic performs a selection of seasonal favorites in a festive atmosphere of music and song that will have the Schuster overflowing with holiday happiness. After intermission, Amahl And The Night Visitors brings to life the story of three mysterious kings who are following a star to bring gifts to a wondrous child in a fully-staged, brand new production created for Dayton Opera. The three kings stop for rest at the home of Amahl, a shepherd boy who lives in poverty with his mother, and when Amahl offers his own simple gift to the child, a miracle happens. Since its first performance on Christmas Eve 1951, this holiday classic has been performed on every continent in many languages and been seen by more people than any other opera in history. A heartwarming story of kindness and generosity, it is the perfect first opera – or hundredth!

Free tickets are limited to 50 per performance. Tickets are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to six tickets per party. Seat locations vary per show. Reserved tickets are held at the Box Office and are available for pickup one hour before each show.

The Ballet invites you to Show the Love!

I love a good deal. I love downtown. I love our Dayton arts. ShowTheLove

So, I was pretty excited when I saw that the Dayton Ballet is inviting you to SHOW THE LOVE for the February Fantasy performances.

How’s it work? You shop at any downtown business from now until February 14 and bring the receipt to the Ticket Center Stage box office (at the Schuster Center, unless you’re going immediately before the performance). You can get the best possible tickets available (up to a $72 value!) for only $14. Buy your tickets now to get the best seats or go right before the show and get the best that’s still available. The show runs Thursday, February 11 – Sunday, February 14. Any show, any available ticket – only $14 when you show that downtown receipt.

What’s February Fantasy? More information on the show is online at the DPAA web site. With four separate pieces being performed in one night, there’s great diversity and it’ll be a fun introduction to ballet. PLUS, if you’re interested in learning a little something, too – you can attend the pre-show talk that starts 45 minutes before each show.

So – here’s my recommendation for you (no matter who you are):

Do you do the romantic Valentine’s Day celebration? Buy your sweetie something sweet from one of the awesome local downtown shops and then go get tickets. You get extra points for trying something new and being a hip, in-the-know local.

Do you stay away from the saccharine of the pseudo-holiday? Buy yourself something cool (or, y’know, be a pragmatist and just buy lunch) and treat yo self to a great show or plan a friends’ night out (two tix per receipt, so bring more receipts if you have a bigger group).

Do you procrastinate and stay away from making plans in advance? This still works out for you whether you’re planning a date or just looking for something new to do with your group of friends. Head downtown the night of the show, get dinner (or drinks at a local brewery/pub) and wander over the the Victoria right before curtain. Show that receipt and you can STILL get the $14 tickets (best available seat).

This is such a great idea, I reached out to Dave Bukvic from the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance to find out how it came about. He shared, “We’ve got a definite history working together with the Downtown Dayton Partnership. Much of our strategy is in alignment with the vision for growing downtown and showcasing the convenience and quality of all there is to offer. This was a great opportunity to encourage our arts patrons to explore a new restaurant or shop and invite those who are regular visitors to the downtown cafes, stores and pubs to enjoy a performance at the ballet.”

 

Party Arty Celebrates Bringing Performing Arts to Life

Springboro Pike, the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is proud to present Party Arty: Bringing Performing Arts to Life, a unique evening filled with live music, savory tidbits, and entertainment and serves as a celebration for arts enthusiasts from around the Miami Valley while benefiting schoolchildren across eight counties.

The purpose of Party Arty is to raise funds to support the operating costs of all of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA) Education programs for students in grades K–12, while engaging the region’s enthusiasm for the arts and enhancing connections with future audience members.

Featuring live music from Linda Prevo Band and Hey There Morgan, heavy hors d’oeuvres, complimentary beer and wine, a “Partini” bar, and specialty performances by professionals from the Dayton Ballet, Opera, and Philharmonic, as well as promising young performers from DPAA Education Programs.

In addition, there will be a Silent Auction of items donated by local artists, restaurants, businesses and friends of the performing arts. Take a Magical Trip to Neverland With Dayton Ballet and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra

Peter_Pan_Ballet_PhilharmonicOn Friday, March 20 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 21 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, March 22 at 3 p.m. in the Mead Theater of the Schuster Center, Dayton Ballet, in collaboration with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, will present Peter Pan, the fourth and final ballet of the 2014-2015 New Horizons Season. This unique presentation with live orchestra is also the fifth performance in the Kettering Health Network SuperPops Series.  The Signature Sponsor for this production is The Miriam Rosenthal Foundation for the Arts, and the Performance Sponsor is Premier Health.  Supporting Sponsors are Enterprise Roofing and Quantech Services, Inc.  The DPAA Innovation Partner is the DP&L Foundation – Powering Innovation in the Performing Arts.

Dayton Ballet’s Peter Pan will feature original choreography by Septime Webre, Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet, under the guidance of Dayton Ballet Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke. For this production of Peter Pan, Dayton Ballet joins forces with Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra to present the enchanting score by Carmon DeLeone.  Johanna Bernstein Wilt will be setting this ballet, having previously helped set it in several productions with ballet companies around the country. Dayton Ballet’s Sharon Neumeister will be the Rehearsal Assistant on this production.

The timeless story of Peter Pan extols the virtues of eternal youth, of keeping our childlike wonder, and of not taking the real world too seriously. The story of Peter Pan was written by J.M. Barrie over 100 years ago and has been retold over the years in various formats, from books to movies, from cartoons to musical theatre.  Just this past December the story was retold by NBC as a special live television production of the 1954 musical adaptation of Peter Pan.

Although the story itself has been around for over a century, the ballet version of this classic tale is relatively new.  In 2000, renowned choreographer Septime Webre was commissioned to create a new ballet version of Peter Pan.  Webre set out to design the ballet with two goals in mind. “One was to create a very ‘dancy’ production that would really challenge the dancers and their technique, and the other to connect to audiences of all ages,” said Webre. Septime Webre has indeed accomplished these goals in his story ballet version of Peter Pan.  The ballet includes many notable moments set to thrill audience members of any age.  The flying scenes for Peter, Wendy, John and Michael are magical and breath-taking.  There are spectacular solos for Peter and Wendy that are completely captivating, a high-energy opening dance for the Lost Boys, boisterous and bawdy scenes for the Pirates and Wenches, complete with real sword fighting, and a fantastic solo dance by the Crocodile.  This ballet is fun-filled and clever, rich with humor and including witty nods to classic ballets the audience will surely recognize.

“Peter Pan is a highly demanding story ballet that insists on larger-than-life character portrayals,” says Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke.  “The ballet is extremely well-crafted by Septime.  While the dancing is strenuous and intense, the ballet is hysterical and so much fun to perform!”

“Carmon DeLeone’s score for Peter Pan is brilliant, colorful, tuneful music,” adds DPO Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman.  “You’ll hear a little Prokofiev, a little Bach, a little John Williams, and a lot of wonderful original music, too. There are a lot of notes, but it will also be a lot of fun to play!”

The lively and dynamic dancing from all 19 dancers of Dayton Ballet and from dancers of Dayton Ballet II senior and junior companies, combined with the enchanting score played to perfection by Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, will make for a wonderful night of entertainment in the Schuster Center.

BEBOP- Dayton Performing Arts Alliance Introduces Unique Summer Camp Experience

ShowImage-1The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is starting a new summer children’s education program, called BEBOP – Beginning Experiences in Ballet, Opera and Philharmonic. The aim is to provide children, ages 8-10, early exposure to ballet, opera and the philharmonic orchestra during a week-long day camp filled with experiences designed to encourage creativity, to motivate curiosity and to inspire a life-long love of the arts.

 

We have an opportunity to help launch BEBOP through matching funds at .50 to every dollar donated! The project is live on CultureWorks’s Power 2 Give site and we are 89% to our goal! If you care about exposing kids to the arts, this would be a great way to help! Please consider a donation and share with your friends!

Is your child 8-10 years of age? Would you like them to experience the performing arts? This is a wonderful opportunity to do exactly that! This summer camp will be held at Wright State University June 15th-19th , 10am-3pm daily. Campers will explore:

 

  • The communicative and expressive value of dance, singing and instrumental music!
  • The ways that all three art forms work together, and the qualities that makes them unique!
  • Improvisation and movement!
  • A basic understanding of how to use their voices in song!
  • How orchestral instruments work!
  • Creating an information original performance piece!

ENCORE! is a special program created to engage young professionals in a lasting relationship with the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance by bringing together like-minded individuals through performances, unique social events, special “perks” and networking opportunities. ENCORE! is cultivating the next generation of DPAA patrons and leaders to ensure that Dayton’s rich performing arts legacy will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
