Charlie Campbell’s It’s Great In Dayton

Organizing Poor People’s Campaign. Christ Episcopal Church, 20 West 1st Street, Monday, 6:30pm.
The deadline to nominate a Daytonian for the Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame is Wednesday, at 5pm.
Come and enjoy the unique dining experience of the Pintxos and Tapas of Spain. It features small bites from the bar, continual service from the kitchen, and wine and drink specials including GinTonics and PorTonics. This is at El Meson on Wednesday through Saturday.
First Friday is all about spreading the love in downtown Dayton.
The Front Street Building, 1001 E. Second Street, has a First Friday. Take a stroll through open studios, galleries, and workshops. Meet and greet with artists and artisans, and if you are lucky, you might catch Charlie Campbell on the accordion on the third floor!
Reel Love Recording Company were founded in Nashville and now located in Dayton. Reel Love is an analog and digital recording studio with strong ties to the Dayton music community. Lev Golinkin and his memoir, A Backpack, A Bear, And Eight Crates of Vodka is a compelling true story of two intertwined journeys: a Jewish refugee family fleeing persecution and a young man seeking to reclaim a shattered past. His book is the vivid, darkly comic, and poignant story of a young boy in the confusing and often chilling final decade of the Soviet Union. The event is at the DAI on Wednesday, 7 to 9pm.

A new play is based on letters sent home by soldiers beginning from the American Revolution and leading up to Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s a look at war and its effect on the people serving and their families at home. This is at The Loft on Monday, 11/11, at 7pm.
Think Tank is proud to bring UPSTREAMfor the first time. UPSTREAM invites participants to hear stories from The Change Leaders Alliance. This is a network of individuals with lived experience in poverty, addiction, or incarceration that have come together to use their experiences to impact positive change in our community. At the DAI, Tuesday, 6pm.
Wright State Physicians has a free weight loss surgery education seminar at Miami Valley Hospital South, Cancer Center, Conference Room B (2400 Miami Valley Drive, Centerville) on Tuesday from 6 to 7pm.
Blue Note artists – Kandace Springs, James Francies, and the James Carter Organ Trio – are on a U.S. tour in celebration of the 80th Anniversary of Blue Note Records. Each artist will perform a set of their own music followed by a finale with all coming together to perform a classic Blue Note tune. At the Victoria Theatre, Tuesday, 7:30pm.

Drawn from a private collection, this exhibition showcases William Preston Mayfield’s many photographic achievements in and around Dayton–both in the air and on the ground. In addition to his work as a photographer for the Dayton Daily News, Mayfield later owned his own photography and aerial photography business. His photographic subjects document the vibrancy, challenges, and changing landscape of Dayton over his six-decade long career. The exhibition presents a unique portrait of Dayton during the 20th century. Enjoy an introductory talk by Katherine Ryckman Siegwarth, Kettering Curator of Photography, at 6:30 pm and then tour the exhibit of 35 historic photographs at your own pace. This is at the DAI on Thursday.

Star City Brewing Company has a three-day event in celebration of their six-year anniversary with specialty tappings, mead and melomel corkings, live music, and the release of Star City’s first ever bottled beer. Thursday, through Saturday.
Miracle on 34th Street:
A Live Radio Play. In this Christmas classic, brought to you in a live 1940s radio style format, an old man going by the name of Kris Kringle fills in for an intoxicated Santa in Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day parade. When Kringle surprises customers and employees alike by claiming that he really is Santa Claus, it leads to a court case to determine his mental health and, more importantly, his authenticity. We will have live Foley sound effects on stage as well as commercial breaks to advertise for local businesses. First Lutheran Church. Thursday through Sunday, call for times.
The 2019 Access to Justice Awards Celebration!Awards will be presented to honorees who have worked diligently as advocates for the rights of low-income and disadvantaged people living in the Miami Valley. At the Sinclair Community College Conference Center on Thursday from 5:30 to 8pm.
2019 BMA winner Amanda Fish is at the Phone Booth Lounge in Kettering. Acoustic blues artist Chris Yakopcic will open the show. This is on Thursday, 7pm.

Carillon Brewing brews their beers on a replica 1850 brewing system and a recently brewed a collaboration beer will be released for the first time at this tasting. It’s a Lichtenhainer, a historical German wheat ale that is a little smoky and a little acidic. At the event you can hear about historical brewing and have a full sensory tasting of six different beers, including the Lichtenhainer. This will be the first time the beer has ever been released. Sunday, 1 to 2:30pm.
The Suffrage Victorian Afternoon Tea is at Patterson Homestead on Sunday, 2 to 4pm.

Fall Has Arrived and It’s Great In Dayton!

Justice On Tap is presented by Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc.(LAWO), and the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project (GDVLP). It’s at The Troll Pub on Monday, 5 to 8pm.
Noonday Organ Recitals are each Thursday in October. You get to hear superb organists from12:10 to 12:35pm and then a quick lunch there. This is at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson Street. This Thursday is Yun Kim.
Boo in the Bog. This is a non-scary night walk on the boardwalk through Cedar Bog. Take a for a non-scary night walk with learning stations along the way. Enjoy children’s activities, face painting, storytelling and food. Friday and Saturday 7 to 9pm.
‘Come As You Art’, features art-themed cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a pop-up art gallery, live music by Ohio Brass and Electric, raffles, an Instagram hunt and a photo area to commemorate the evening! Come as you “art” and partake in an unforgettable art extravaganza (Artistic costumes and attire welcome but not required)! It’s at the Brightside in Dayton on Friday, 7 to 10pm.
The Museum’s first Dayton Peace Festival has peace friends, athletes and a few surprise celebrities to celebrate the spirit of #daytonstrong after a long and difficult summer. Activities include games, yoga, meditation, free classes on mindfulness and nonviolence, and food and beverages– and more. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at the Peace Museum.
Jesse Cook is widely considered one of the most influential figures in nuevo flamenco music. He incorporates elements of flamenco, rumba, jazz and many forms of world music into his work. At the Victoria, Saturday, 8pm.
Dayton NoshUp is at Olive Mediterranean Grill (44 W. Third St.). Seatings are at 5pm and 7:30pm and are limited to 50 guests per seating. The cost is $18 per person (plus ticket service fee). You will be served a sampler plate representing traditional Mediterranean dishes, along with some of the owner’s personal favorites. This is Sunday.
Ridgeway Road Bridge. With a focus on creating a place for the community, the new Ridgeway Road Bridge design Foliage reflects the surrounding landscape of Hills and Dale Metro Park and the flowing hills of Kettering, particularly of the view west from the bridge. The fluid movement of the fence lines and the sculptures mimic leaves caught in a gentle breeze. With the addition of plazas on the north and south side of the bridge, pedestrians and vehicles will experience a unique crossing and gathering place.
Oregon District Barstool Open. Put together a team of four for a crazy-fun 9-hole indoor miniature golf outing in 10 bars throughout the Oregon District on Saturday, November 9, 2019!
Proceeds benefit local children and adults with disabilities at United Rehabilitation Services!
Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton is having its 2019 Annual 3k/5k Remembrance Walk on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton. Participants are invited to organize a group of family members, friends, neighbors or co-workers to walk in honor or memory of a loved one
LEAP & THE NET WILL APPEAR: Steps for Creating Positive Change. This is a 3-week workshop at Oakwood Starbucks on Saturdays, 9 to 11am beginning October 19.

Wrapping Up August and It’s Great In Dayton!

Click on a location and register to attend the event. There is a $5 registration fee to hold your seat that will be donated to a charitable organization selected by the location you are attending.

LYRIC FIRE: DUNBAR IN MOTION puts into physical motion the poetry of Dayton’s own Paul Laurence Dunbar, the first African-American poet to achieve international fame. The Lincoln Society of Dayton have a program of dulcimer music and auctioning Lincoln and other interesting items, plus a silent and secret auctions as well. The Garden Club of Dayton is bringing back FIVE SEASONS: THE GARDENS OF PIET OUDOLF on Sunday, at 5:30. Meet local author Jess Montgomery in the lobby of Centerville Library. Montgomery is the author of the Kinship Historical Mysteries and copies of “The Widows,” the first novel in her series, will be available for purchase. Montgomery is a pen name of Sharon Short, newspaper columnist with the Dayton Daily News. The book is a gripping historical mystery about two women whose lives collide when the man they both love is murdered. It was inspired by the true story of Ohio’s first sheriff, Maude Collins, and prominent labor and community organizer Mary Harris “Mother” Jones.

The Dutoit Gallery has a solo exhibition of artist Sam Kelly which consists mostly of inventive still-lifes and portraits. Incorporating various materials into his work, such as oil paint, oil pastel, sand and marble dust, Kelly’s paintings take on an enigmatic and non-descriptive quality. According to Kelly, “the paintings begin with a vague idea, often going through a rigorous additive and subtractive process.” The paintings are modest in subject but intense in their visual energy.
