Conservation team and volunteers from various fishing clubs and organizations across the region will sink hundreds of donated holiday trees donated by the community into Eastwood Lake on Wednesday starting at 10am. MetroParks’ holiday tree sinking will make up for the lack of a forest surrounding Eastwood Lake. The donated trees will act as a catalyst, creating much needed habitat for fish, as well as food for microscopic organisms. The trees will be bundled into groups of two or three, tied to cinder blocks — which Snyder Concrete donated.
FUTUREPROOF 2019 introduces Next-Gen Firewall technology and the power it gives to businesses of various industries. Learn what it mean for your business and join a conversation around what security measures you should be taking. DataBites are lunch-n-learn style events designed to give specific insight into various technology and IT topics. This is Wednesday, at 130 W. Second St. 12-1 p.m.and lunch is provided. The 3rd annual Women’s March Rally. This year, all are coming together to honor the work of the civil rights movement and celebrate the #WomensWave of progressive candidates across Ohio and the rest of the country. The rally begins at 11am on Saturday, January 19 at the Dayton Courthouse Square.
29th Annual Dayton-Area Works on Paper. Thus is a juried exhibition created for artists living within a 40-mile radius of Dayton, Ohio. The exhibition features two-and three-dimensional works of art on or of paper. $1,000 in artist awards are selected by the juror and gallery visitors select a People’s Choice Award. Now to – February 22; Opening reception: Sunday, 2-4pm.

A locally owned Jimmy John’s franchise is set to open in this first quarter of 2019 at 216 N. Main St. in Biltmore Towers. The sandwich shop will employ 30-40 people and will provide dine-in, carry-out, and delivery options for customers.
The Collaboratory has taken first-floor space inside the Talbott Tower. The co-working and creative exchange activities take place from 10am to 4pm weekdays. Previous projects include 3rd Sundays at Front Street, Dayton Sewing Collaborative, and Dayton Porchfest.
The Shadow Box have Joe, Brian, and Felicity come from different walks of life, different parts of the country, and are each dying of cancer. They are living their final days with friends and family in a hospice cottage on the grounds of a large California hospital. Joe’s wife is in denial, Felicity awaits a visit from her daughter, and Brian plays referee between his ex-wife and his male lover. Each day, the patients are observed and counseled by an invisible Interviewer as they talk candidly about their emotional and physical struggles. Dayton Theatre Guild, Now through January 27.
Zombie Dogz is preparing for a major resurrection. The beloved food truck turned brick-and-mortar restaurant at 1200 Brown St. will be closed Jan. 14-28 for major changes.
Dayton Opera welcomes four young opera singers to the Dayton area for its 2018–2019 Artist-in-Residence Program. They are: soprano Marisa Karchin, mezzo-soprano Courtney Elvira, tenor Jacob Ryan Wright, and bass-baritone Michael Colman. The four singers were selected from national auditions.

The 4th Annual Live Nativity is at Far Hills and Dixon, next to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Charlie’s 18 Reasons It’s Great in Dayton This Week!

The Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill, a Christmas Holiday tradition for over three decades is highlighted on ABC TV’S ‘THE GREAT CHRISTMAS LIGHT FIGHT’ Monday evening, 8 to 9pm. Broadcast locally in Dayton on WKEF-ABC 22, WCPO Ch. 9 in Cincinnati, WSYX Ch. 6 in Columbus, and all over the country on the ABC Television Network.

Glen Helen Solstice/Holiday Poetry Reading. The popular holiday event regularly attracts an enthusiastic audience of over a hundred for an evening of original poetry in a warm, natural setting. Twelve scheduled poets from Southwest Ohio will share original poems based on the winter solstice. This is in the Vernet Ecological Center, 405 Corry Street, Yellow Springs, Friday 7 to 9pm.
Dayton Contra are having the Gem City Serenaders with Liz Burkhart. This is at the Michael Solomon Dance Pavilion, 2917 Berkley Ave, Kettering, on Friday, 7:30 to 11pm.
The annual Holiday Craft Show features items from more than 30 local artisan vendors, swag bags, a food truck, a raffle, and specialty cocktails at the bar. Admission is free. The Yellow Cab Tavern, Friday, 5 to 10pm; Saturday, 11am to 6 pm.

Hope Taft to Speak at Library. At the Washington-Centerville Public Library Hope Taft,  a co-founder of the Watershed Network, is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the National Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, passed by Congress in 1968. Learn about Ohio’s role in scenic river preservation, and about our own local rivers, their tributaries, and local efforts to preserve their integrity. For all ages. No registration is required. Friday, 6:30 PM at Woodbourne Library. 
 
Stivers Celebrates. Their annual celebration of young musicians, artists, writers and performers is at the Masonic Center on Friday at 7pm.
 
 
Tecumseh Land Trust’s annual Holiday Open House. Celebrate this year and look forward to the next with snacks, sweets, and hot drinks, as well as opportunities for a little holiday shopping for land and water loving friends and family. It is at Whitehall Farm, 4633 US 68 North, Yellow Springs, on Saturday, 11am to 3pm.

The 4th Annual Dayton Surrealist Ball is transforming into Marie-Hélène Rothchild’s Chatteau and recreating her famous Surrealist ball that was originally held December 12, 1972. This is a fundraising event for STRONG, a comprehensive program developed to prevent and treat the physical, emotional, and sexual victimization of children, teens, and young adults. It is at 713 W Grand Ave. on Saturday, 8 to 11pm.
New music from Dayton band, McGuff and the Dumpster Fires! The band is celebrating the release with a performance including special guests Kyleen Downs and The Typical Johnsons. This is at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District on Saturday.
Heaven and Nature Sing. Whether your holiday tastes are classical, contemporary, traditional or innovative, Musica’s “Heaven and Nature Sing” has it all. Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 155 East Thruston Boulevard, Oakwood, Sunday, 3pm.
Can you think of a better way to study for finals?…or just relax and enjoy superb jazz? It is at the Arts Street Cafe, Sunday, 5 to7pm.

White Squirrel And It’s Great In Dayton!

In recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio and the Dayton YWCA are partnering to host a community screening of BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. This documentary follows three cases of domestic violence – from the moment emergency calls were placed, right through to the courts and beyond. On the day of the screening there is a minimum donation of $5. At The Neon, Tuesday, 7:30pm.
Hayner’s November Drawing Room Concert features the Western Ohio Tuba Quartet.  This unique instrumentation delivers a rich and resonant sound that simply needs to be experienced to appreciate. This free concert is Tuesday at 7:30pm.
The Carillon Tree of Light  Towering 200 feet, this is not only the centerpiece of A Carillon Christmas, but also an undeniable symbol of Christmas in the Miami Valley. The Tree Lighting is free. Regular Park admission fees apply to experience A Carillon Christmas. The lighting is Wednesday, 6pm.

Weapons Component Testing and Fusion Research. An in-depth account of the techniques used by Mound Laboratory to make quality assurance measurements of weapons components for the Atomic Energy Commission. Mound got this assignment shortly after the U.S. developed the hydrogen bomb. Mound Cold War Discovery Center, Wednesday, 7 to 9pm.
Since 1998, YWCA Dayton set aside one special day to recognize and honor the most influential women in our community.  Class of 2019 honorees will be announced on their website and social media on Thursday.
The City of Kettering and Rosewood Gallery are presenting exhibitions by artists Connie R Campbell and Ginger Owen-Murakami & Vicki VanAmeyden.Reception is Thursday, 6 to 8pm. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The official launch party and grand opening weekend for the PNC Arts Annex is

IN THE PALM GROVE. Two renowned African-American artists are having a frank conversation about what it means to be a black artist in Dayton. Panelists Rodney Veal (choreographer, interdisciplinary artist, and host of Think TV’s “The Art Show”) and Crystal Michelle Perkins (Associate Artistic Director, DCDC), with moderator Michelle Hayford (Director of the Theatre, Dance, and Performance Technology Program at University of Dayton), are sharing their stories, their perspectives, and their hopes about the future for artists in this region. Mayflower Arts Center  Mosaic Radio Theatre LIVE! It’s vaudeville…for your mind! Their first performance of live radio theatre is complete with audience participation! Chris and Linda Tatarian (of Rum River Blend) host a 2-hour radio vaudeville show featuring a mosaic of drama, mystery, acoustic music, comedy, on-the-spot interviews, commercial jingle, and yes…sound effects! This is Friday, 7pm.

The Dayton Holiday Festival, Mix 107.7 and THE NEONhave the much-loved FAMILY HOLIDAY FILM SERIES. They have 3 holiday gems over the course of the first three Saturdays in December.  Admission is free for children 12 and under, and general admission is just $2.  On Saturday at Noon is LITTLE WOMEN – the 1932 version directed by George Cukor starring Katherine Hepburn.

ORPHAN HORSE, starring Jon Voight, Alexa Nisenson, Vail Bloom, and Eva LaRue is the latest film project for Miami Valley actor Scott Summitt.

Beyond Frontline: A community conversation about race. In September, Dayton was featured on PBS Frontline’s “Left Behind America” which documented the city’s struggle to recover in the post-recession economy. CEO Shannon Isom and Advocacy Committee member Jason Harrison joined Gem City Podcast for a community conversation about race, historical segregation, and how we connect even when we disagree.
#DiscoverDayton Instagram Contest. The Dayton Convention & Visitors Bureau wants authentic pictures of you and your friends or family having fun in our community during the holiday season! Why? Because they love showing off all things Dayton and want you to get in on the fun, too!

The Contemporary Dayton’s Holiday Gift Gallery features fine art and craft by 50+ local artists. It is available to December 22.
Global Love Dayton is a series of limited edition custom snow globes “celebrating and supporting our region’s treasures,” developed by Stewardship Resources to raise funds for local non-profit organizations.
The MetroParks have planning efforts for individual parks with the development of master plans.  Scheduled plans for the Hills & Dales MetroPark is Thursday, 11:30am to 1:30pm at Oakwood Community Center; and 6 to 8pm at the Oakwood City Building, 30 Park Avenue. They also have an Online Survey.
Michelle Stitzlein has been commissioned to create a large art installation for the Park Reading Room in the Main Library in downtown Dayton. She wants locally-sourced, found, reused and/or recycled materials that reflect the Montgomery County community to incorporate into the artwork. Please bring items for donation to the Main Library and drop them in the red bin in the Opportunity Space @ Patterson bynFriday, December 14. Over The River and It’s Great in Dayton

The New-England Boy’s Song about Thanksgiving Day, also known as “Over the River and Through the Wood”, is a Thanksgiving poem originally published in 1844 in Flowers for Children. The Last Waltz was the final live performance by The Band on November 25, 1976. It lives on thanks to Martin Scorsese who was on hand that night to film this epic concert. Decades later in Dayton and in cities all across the nation, an annual tradition has blossomed. She is now seeking locally-sourced, found, reused and/or recycled materials that reflect the Montgomery County community to incorporate into the artwork. Please bring items for donation to the Main Library, 215 E. Third Street, and drop them in the red bin in the Opportunity Space @ Patterson. Stitzlein will pick up all donated items on Friday, December 14. Beethoven Symphony No. 7, Dvorak Cello Concerto.
The cello was finally propelled to the level of the piano and violin as a prominent solo instrument with Dvorak’s concerto in B minor. It’s Great In Dayton – Must Attend Events of the week!

Richard V. Reeves’s talk is titled, “Dream Hoarders: Tackling Inequality and Class in America.” This is on Monday, 7pm in Kennedy Union Ballroom and is free and open to the public. Parking is available in B and C lots only.
Concert For a Cure. This Annual Acoustic Concert is to raise money and awareness in the month of October which is Breast Cancer Awareness month. This show is for all ages. Funds raised will stay in the community to provide support in transportation, meals, comfort and to let them know they are not alone in this battle. Dayton Convention Center,  Wednesday, 7pm.

Westminster Presbyterian Church has free organ recitals from 12:10-12:35pm each Thursday in October. Lunch following at a nominal cost.

Bottle of rose and a bowl of ramen! Downtown Dayton restaurant hosting special ‘popup’ nights on Thursday.

The fifth annual Dayton Out of the Darkness Community Walkis Sunday at Oakwood High School. Registration is 1pm with walk starting at 2pm. Last year there were more than 1,100 walkers and more than $180,000 was raised in the last four years to fight suicide. Almost 45,000 people die by suicide per year in the U.S. with close to 1,700 people in Ohio losing their lives to suicide each year. There is no cost to walk but registration is required which can be done online at www.outofthedarkness.org, or day of walk. 

Songs of Hope and Freedom.Embrace the Passion that gives us hope in the pursuit of freedom. It’s time for the biannual, guided home tour, The Spirit of Huffman.The outing offers tour goers a visual feast of Halloween decorations and entertainment dispersed among the Victorian homes. Participants of the home tour will be guided through the neighborhood, established in the 1860s through the 1890s by William P. Huffman, stopping to tour nine unique homes. Each tour is two hours long and includes refreshments. Event is rain or shine, please plan accordingly and bring umbrellas if forecast calls for rain. The Ohio Sauerkraut Festivalserves 7 tons of sauerkraut and attracts approximately 350,000 visitors each year to browse among the over 450 craft booths and sample the offerings from more than 30 different food booths. Saturday and Sunday.

 

Wild Edibles Workshop.Learn how to identify and enjoy the many edible plants in our environment that are both safe and nutritional. Using visuals and taste testing, you eat edibles that are common in our environment, especially seeds, flowers and leaves that are edible. The Spooktacular Show is  Sunday at the Huber Center 6178 Chambersburg Road, from 11am to 3 pm. The cost is $10 per car. There are awards, dash plaques and costumes. This is a kid friendly event. Bring the whole family!

Traditional Turkish folk music, Sufi songs – even a whirling dervish – will make the Main Library a lively place on Sunday. Musician Latif Bolat, accompanied by a dervish dancer, performs 2 to 3:30pm at the Library located at 215 E. Third St in downtown Dayton. The performance is free and open to the public.

 

The Antioch Writers Workshop is telling how to participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which takes place every November. Join thousands of other writers across the country as they prepare the first draft of their novel. If you have long nurtured a desire to write a novel (or just got the urge) this program will be of help to you. This is Sunday, 2 to 3:30pm at Books & Co at The Greene.

The Scoop on Soup! Ulrike Massey from Spice Paradise is at the historic Long-Romspert Homestead and House Museum, for the “Scoop on Soup”! Learn the basics of soup-making, and how to change it up with different seasonings. Sunday, 1:30pm. 

 

Richard V. Reeves is a senior fellow in economic studies and director of the Future of the Middle Class Initiative and co-director of the Center on Children and Families for the Brookings Institution. His talk is titled, “Dream Hoarders: Tackling Inequality and Class in America.” This is on Monday, October 15, at 7pm in Kennedy Union Ballroom. This is free and open to the public. No tickets required, but seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is available in B and C lots only.
