Open auditions for Broadway Bound

September 4, 2022 By Dayton937

Open audition notice for Broadway Bound by Neil Simon
Auditions will be held Tue & Wed, Sep 6 & 7, 2022, starting at 7:00 pm both nights.
Production dates: Nov 4-20, 2022
The Dayton Theatre Guild at the Caryl D. Philip TheatreScape
430 Wayne Ave, Dayton OH, 45410
937-278-5993 — www.daytontheatreguild.org
Directed by Marjorie Strader
Produced by Scott Madden
Following Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues, Broadway Bound is the funny and poignant conclusion of Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical Eugene trilogy. Eugene and his brother Stanley are trying to break into the world of professional comedy writing while coping with their parents’ messy and gut-wrenching split. When their material is broadcast on the radio for the first time, the rest of the family is stunned to hear a comedic rendition of their own trials and tribulations. Broadway Bound gently and humorously looks at the conflict between family loyalties and personal happiness, as well as the challenges we face, even as adults, of breaking out of parent-child patterns that we formed years ago.
Casting Requirements:
• Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
• A résumé and headshot are not required but are appreciated.
• Please bring all scheduling conflicts, including weekends, between Sep 8 and Nov 20, 2022.
Masks are strongly suggested for everyone auditioning or otherwise involved..
All cast and crew are required to be vaccinated for COVID-19
-) Eugene:
(23) the play’s narrator. Affable, witty and quick with a joke, Eugene is trying to break into comedy writing with his older brother Stanley. Although he seems care-free, he cares deeply for his family, and through the course of this play, begins to see his parents as actual people with their own stories and heartbreaks.
-) Stanley:
28) Eugene’s older brother. Driven and high-strung, Stanley is the force behind the brothers’ quest to get into show business. Although he bickers constantly with Eugene as they write, he also demonstrates his devotion to his brother and the rest of the family.
-) Kate:
(early 50s) Eugene and Stanley’s mother, Jack’s wife. Strong and hardworking, Kate does everything in her power to put up a happy front and keep her family together and well-fed, even as she is undergoing the pain of her 30-plus year marriage crumbling in front of her.
-) Jack:
(mid to late-50s) Eugene and Stanley’s father, Kate’s husband. Having spent years working in the same job and living in the same neighborhood, he has become tired of the monotony of life…and of marriage.
-) Ben:
(late 70s) Kate’s father. Ben lives with his daughter Kate and her family, while his semi- estranged wife of many years lives with Blanche, another daughter. Ben is an old socialist who doesn’t understand his grandsons’ “comedy.” If it isn’t educating people or making the world a more equitable place, what’s the point? While not an affectionate man, he is there for Kate in his own way.
-) Blanche:
late 40s/early 50s), Kate’s younger sister, Ben’s daughter. A widow who has re-married into money, Blanche visits from her Park Avenue home to attempt to convince Ben to move to Florida with his wife, but Ben can’t see past Blanche’s new wealth and how it clashes with his own socialist views.

Celebrate National Cinema Day with $3 Movies

September 2, 2022 By Dayton937

On National Cinema Day, which this year falls on Saturday, September 3rd,  movie tickets will be just $3 in the vast majority of American theaters as part of a newly launched promotion to lure moviegoers back to the theaters. Labor Day weekend is traditionally one of the slowest weekends in theaters.

The Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners,  announced the nationwide discount day in more than 3,000 theaters and on more than 30,000 screens. Major chains, including AMC, Cinemark and  Regal Cinemas, are participating, as are all major film studios. In participating theaters, tickets will be no more than $3 for every showing, in every format.

“After this summer’s record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing,” said Jackie Brenneman, Cinema Foundation president, in a statement. “We’re doing it by offering a ‘thank you’ to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven’t made it back yet.”

After more than two years of pandemic, movie theaters rebounded significantly over the summer, seeing business return to nearly pre-pandemic levels. Films like “Top Gun: Maverick,””Minions: Rise of Gru,“”Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Jurassic World Dominion” pushed the domestic summer box office to $3.3 billion in ticket sales as of Aug. 21, according to data firm Comscore. That trails 2019 totals by about 20% but exhibitors have had about 30% fewer wide releases this year.

Cinemark/Rave Theatres are taking the $3 price point even further, offering the following concession specials:

Organizers of National Cinema Day described the event as a trial that could become an annual fixture. While some other countries have experimented with a similar day of cheap movie tickets, the initiative is the first of its kind on such a large scale in the U.S.

Little Fish Brewing Opens Their Doors Friday Night

September 1, 2022 By Dayton937

Co-owners Jimmy Stockwell and Sean Whiteopened Little Fish Brewing Company in the summer of 2015 in Athens, Ohio.  Their mission was to brew world class beer while sustainably supporting local economies. They designed several of the original core beer recipes utilizing the Ohio-grown ingredients available at the time. These included organic raw spelt and corn grits in the flagship Saison du Poisson and Shagbark Pilsner brews, as well as many specialty ingredients like locally grown fruits and herbs.

When looking to grow their operations, Dayton had always been receptive to their beers so it seemed like a natural.  They look to bring the same philosophy to their downtown Dayton location. Executive Chef Becky Clark says, “that they aim to make their food as good as their beer and their beer is amazing.”She also shares that we can expect lots of beer dinners in the future.

You’ll have the chance to check out Dayton’s newest brewery this Friday & Saturday.  They are still running a limited menu and shorter shifts while they get everyone trained and work out the kinks.
Here are the hours for this weekend:
Friday 9/2 – 11a-11p (kitchen closes at 10)
Saturday 9/3 – 11a-11p (kitchen closes at 10)
Then come next Wednesday through Friday they’ll be open 11am – 11pm with the kitchen closing at 10pm. The Grand Opening  is scheduled for September 17 and that’s when they’ll start staying open until 1am (kitchen until midnight).

Northridge Eatery Gets New Owners

August 31, 2022 By Dayton937

Back in the 1950’s, Charburger opened the doors as the first in a line of restaurants that would eventually becomes George’s Family Restaurant. Charburger was the place to be seen on the Dixie Strip and all the cars out cruising would pull around back for car hop service. After Charburger, the Dixie Family Inn took over for a few years during the 1970’s. Farmer Jacks followed and was a staple in Northridge throughout the 1980’s. Farmer Jacks became Southern Bell for a few years until George Dimitrouleas and his business partner, Chef Mike Giolekas, opened up George’s Family Restaurant in 1994. George sold the business to his Son, Dino, and his significant other Elesha in 2003. An expanded menu featuring Genuine Broaster Chicken, Broasted Fish, and Broasted Pork Chops was introduced in 2010.
Today Dino & Elesha announced on their facebook page that they’ve sold the business.
Here’s that post:
“To our loyal customers and friends. We would like to share the bittersweet news with you that we have sold George’s Family Restaurant after almost 20 years of ownership.
Don’t worry, nothing is changing. We will still have the same great name, same great recipes, same great staff and same great service that you allknow and love. We are very confident that it’s in good hands with the new owners, Steve and Sam.
It’s been a pleasure getting to know so many of you on a personal level. We’ve become friends with many of our customers and can’t wait to have a little more time to cultivate those friendships!”
They went on to thank their staff and customers and shared, “We’re not going anywhere. We will be sticking around for a lengthy training process to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. But, after that… we can’t wait to join all of you as regulars.”

Dayton is joining the National Civic League Hall of Fame in recognition of its police reform work and its four “All-America City” awards. The Hall of Fame award recognizes previous All-America City awardees that have implemented a community-driven initiative resulting in significant local impact due to community engagement.

The League is recognizing Dayton for community engagement surrounding the police reform initiative that was launched in mid-2020 and developed more than 140 recommendations identified by five working groups co-chaired by and comprised of over 100 community volunteers and members of the Dayton Police Department.

Reform measures resulting from the initiative include policies and practices related to oversight, transparency, community engagement, use of force, and recruitment. The recommendations emerging from the working groups were reviewed and accepted by the Dayton City Commission, with implementation complete or underway.

A Commission work session updating the progress of the implementation efforts will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m.

“We are happy to welcome Dayton into the Hall of Fame,” said Doug Linkhart, National Civic League president. “The recent police reform initiative shows that the community is still embodying the ideals of an All-American City and is committed to the practice of civic engagement.”

Dayton Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr., added: “By utilizing several diverse community voices and partners, we re-imagined what community engagement in policing looks like. There is still more work to do, but this process has already resulted in positive outcomes. I am pleased that our effort has been recognized with national praise.”

The City of Dayton is sharing a video about the success of the police reform initiative. The video and others related to police reform, including profiles of community volunteers, is available in a video archive.

Dayton earned the All-America City designation in 2017, 1991, 1978, and 1951. The award honors municipalities demonstrating outstanding work in civic innovation, inclusion and collaboration.

The National Civic League, founded in 1894 as the National Municipal League, continues to support and recognize municipal civic reform and excellence. Theodore Roosevelt, one of the League’s founders, called on Americans to “be actors, and not merely critics of others” at the first conference on good city government.
