Order Ahead and Get Drive-Thru Pick up at 2nd Street Market

November 17, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second St. in downtown Dayton, is now offering a pre-order drive-thru pick up on Saturdays that allows customers to safely and conveniently support their favorite Market vendors. Several vendors will participate, including many artisan vendors who sell items that make unique holiday gifts.

Here’s how it works:

  • Customers must order in advance directly from vendors. Ordering deadlines vary by vendor. No walk-up sales will be offered.
  • Vendor participation will vary week to week. Vendor sales information is at metroparks.org/localfood.
  • In most cases, customers also need to pay in advance. The exceptions are for three cash-only vendors: Garber Farms and Irvin Honey, which are delivering orders at the garage doors by their booths on the north side of the Market, and Cheeky Meat Pies, which is delivering frozen pies at the second door in the drive thru. Advance orders are still required for these three vendors.
  • Customers then pick up their pre-orders using the drive-thru on Saturdays any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

    Azra’s Mediterranean Cuisine

  • The drive-thru is located on the Market’s south side, and the entrance is at the east end of the building.
  • Customers will remain in their vehicles. At the first door, a greeter determines which orders customers are picking up and directs them to the appropriate door for pick up. There, orders are delivered to customers’ vehicles.
  • The drive-thru will take place on Wednesdays rather than Saturdays during the weeks of Thanksgiving (open Wednesday, Nov. 25) and Christmas (open Wednesday, Dec. 23). Pick up hours remain 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Azra’s Mediterranean Cuisine is delivering orders at the garage door located next to the ATM machine ramp at the center of the north side of the Market.
  • Shoppers must wear a face covering while interacting with greeters and those delivering orders to vehicles, as well as when interacting with cash-only vendors.
  • Customers will not have access to the interior of the Market building, including restrooms.
  • The drive-thru pick up will be offered in November and December.

“The 2nd Street Market was able to offer an outdoor market on Saturdays that allowed during the summer and fall growing seasons, which allowed customers to shop safely for their favorite locally grown foods despite the pandemic,” said Lynda Suda, Market manager. “The drive-thru pick up will allow customers to keep supporting those Market vendors during the holiday season.”

Qigong at Deeds Park

November 15, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Join us on the grassy circle of Deeds Park, around sunset on Wednesday evenings (appropriately socially distanced, of course) to listen to our energy, body, and state of well-being – and in the process breathe deeply, move slowly and shake off any stress of our day . . . with Qigong. Immortal Tree Qigong will guide participants through Qigong routines that help each participant better understand their own nature—without judgment or competition.  The hour-long session will start with breathing exercises, warm up, Qi activation and gentle stretching.  Participants will then be guided through flowing movements each punctuated by a short standing meditation.  We will end with a slightly longer guided standing meditation before we bow out.

Celebrating the Gateway to Oregon District Mural!

November 13, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

On Saturday, November 14th at 2:00pm, the Oregon District Bridge Mural Reveal-Celebration will take place to celebrate the vision and execution of the mural on Fifth Street that serves as a gateway to the District.  and all those who participated. Social distancing and mask-wearing is required.

Completed by artist Dave Scott, it covers both sides of the 5th Street bridge, which has been a priority for the ODBA board for the last two years. This mural project is part of a broader strategy of the ODBA to strengthen the Oregon District’s distinctive identity and to create “place-making” by providing accessibility to art and creative expression without barriers.

Dana Graham, elected to the ODBA Board in 2020, spearheaded this bridge mural project and brought it to fruition. Graham is the Boutique Coordinator at Puff Apothecary and Office + Community Curator at CANARY Consulting, both businesses are located in the Oregon District. Graham will serve a three-year term on the ODBA board.

“With this opportunity to co-manage the bridge mural project, I was excited that the ODBA could provide the platform to highlight the work of underrepresented talent and see their work shine on what will become an iconic Dayton landmark,” explained Graham. “Dave Scott is an incredibly talented artist and we are so in love with his mural.”

Dave Scott was born and raised in Trotwood, Ohio. Scott takes a simplistic approach to work and considers himself a minimalist. In studying art history and color theory, he has been able to create his own style, using color to express emotion, Dave strives to connect with his audience through purposeful creations.

“The mural to me is a symbol of artistic freedom,” said Scott. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to have done this and I appreciate everyone that helped me complete it. The mural is a huge milestone for my career. With it only being my second mural, it takes me to that next level and I’m excited to see what’s next. I hope it brings new life to people in the Oregon District and inspires them in ways I can’t even fathom.”

This piece of public art was a collaborative effort. Scott assembled a team of local talent enlisting B.K Elias and Lydia Williamson to help execute his vision. Dozens of volunteers also assisted Scott with this giant undertaking.

Kyle Babirad, owner of CANARY Consulting and president of the ODBA explained, “This mural has been in the works for such a long time. It was important to our [ODBA] board to create a spectacular entrance and gateway into the district that represented the vibrancy of our businesses and of our residential neighborhood. Dana’s leadership on this project did so much more than just commission a work of art, she worked with many stakeholders and in selecting Dave Scott, helped to assemble a community of artists to represent our entire city.”

“It’s important to know that the creative community of Black + Brown and other minority identities, especially those of the millennial generation, have always been abundant in the city of Dayton. We’ve contributed to different artistic eras, political movements, community re-shaping, and entrepreneurial landscapes. The painting of the Oregon District bridge is just another great example of that influence that will continue building the culture of our city,” said Graham.

Celebrating the Revival of The Arcade

November 13, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

With the first phase of the restoration of the Dayton Arcade nearing completion, ThinkTV, the Dayton Metro Library and Cross Street Partners have teamed up for a week-long celebration of the history and future of the iconic Dayton Arcade.

An exhibit of the Dayton Arcade’s rich history will be on display at the Dayton Metro Library, 215 E. Third Street. The exhibit, featuring memorabilia from the early history of the Arcade and the Save the Arcade campaign, will be on display through February in the Dayton Room on the Main Library’s second floor. The photographs, art and artifacts can be viewed in the windows of the Dayton Room. Visitors who wish to go inside the room should call the library at 937-463-2665 to schedule a time for their visit.

“We’re pleased to host this look at the Arcade’s grand past,” said Special Collections Manager Jamie McQuinn. “The Dayton Room is home to hundreds of vintage photos of the city of Dayton, and the Arcade has long been one of its greatest gems.”

To continue the week-long celebrating, ThinkTV will premiere the first of their three-part documentary – Dayton Arcade: Waking the Giant – at 9pm on Monday, November 16, on ThinkTV16. It will also be made available on the ThinkTV website and on the PBS Video App. The first part of this exclusive, local documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at the beginning phases of the restoration of the Dayton Arcade with the remaining two-parts of the documentary expected to premiere later in the year of 2021.

“The Dayton Arcade documentary is a story that reflects the hope, resilience and future of the Dayton community. Capturing this story while this transformation has been happening behind historic walls has been nothing short of a privilege for our team to work on,” ThinkTV President and CEO Kitty Lensman said.

Excitement is stirring in anticipation of the reveal of the Dayton Arcade’s transformation. Cross Street Partners oversaw this massive project from the beginning and have worked to ensure that the historical beauty has been preserved while maximizing functionality.

“Cross Street Partners, Model Group and McCormack Baron Salazar are working to recast the building in much the same way it was initially developed in the first decade of the 20th century — with a mix of retail, offices, event space and apartment housing. The first phase of the project, the South Arcade, will consist of an innovation center with the University of Dayton as a higher education partner in addition to a 110-unit residential LIHTC and market rate development for artists and creative entrepreneurs. The second phase, the North Arcade, will include a shared commercial kitchen program, a marketplace retail and restaurant environment, and micro-lofts or hospitality user space,” said David Williams, senior director of development of Cross Street Partners.

To learn more about ThinkTV’s three-part documentary, visit www.thinktv.org/dayton-arcade. For additional information about the Library’s exhibit, visit www.DaytonMetroLibrary.org or call 937-463- 2665. Details about the renovation of the Dayton Arcade can be found at www.arcadedayton.com and @DaytonArcade on social media.

Rike’s Holiday Windows Tradition Continues

November 11, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Dayton Live is pleased to announce that Yes, Virginia, the Rike’s Holiday windows will be on display for the public this holiday season – with restrictions and cautionary procedures in keeping with Montgomery County Health Department and CDC guidelines. The newly redesigned windows were revealed last season for the enjoyment of families from all over the Miami Valley.

Designed by critically acclaimed theatre and opera scenic designer and Dayton native Adam Koch, along with partner Steven Royal, the windows featuring animated elves, animals and other figures have been a holiday tradition for countless Dayton families since the elves first appeared in the windows of Rike’s Department Store in the 1940s.

In 2018, two of the redesigned windows, “The Nutcracker” and “The North Pole,” debuted to the delight of thousands of visitors. Four more windows were revealed in 2019: “Woodland,” ”Silent Night,” “Snow Day,” and “Christmastime,” each with characters from the original windows as well as some newly discovered and donated figures. The boxes were constructed by internationally acclaimed set and stage designers, Scenic Solutions from West Carrollton, Ohio, with costumes created by the Dayton Sewing Collaborative.

The schedule for viewing the windows will be different this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and CDC guidelines. Patrons may register for a specific viewing time slot during the three-week schedule: December 2-6, December 9-13, and December 16-20. Hours will vary by day. Masks and social distancing will be required, and extended sanitizing regimens will be in place. For complete details on cautionary measures and to register for a time slot, go to daytonlive.org/holiday.
