New Solar Energy Panels Installed At 2nd Street Market

September 10, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Five Rivers MetroParks has installed a 131-panel solar array – among the largest in the City of Dayton – on the roof of the 2nd Street Market, marking a significant advancement in this downtown destination’s commitment to sustainability and to MetroParks’ commitment to climate change mitigation.

A green ribbon cutting will be held to mark the completion of this project.

  • When: Friday, Sept. 13 at 10 am
  • Where: 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second St.
  • What: All are welcome to attend the ribbon cutting, during which there will be remarks from MetroParks officials and an invitation to explore the permanent interpretive installation outside the Market.

The installation was completed in late July and made possible through a generous gift to theFive Rivers MetroParks Foundation from Mat and Cindi Heck.

“We are passionate about Five Rivers MetroParks and the environmental benefits of solar energy,” Cindi Heck said. “We’re excited about the incredible cost savings over time to help the 2nd Street Market, as well as the positive environmental impact and opportunity to educate the public about the benefits of solar energy. This type of sustainable energy, along with other alternative sources of power, are the way of the future for generation to come.”

The solar array significantly reduces the Market’s carbon footprint:

  • First, it’s anticipated to offset 46% of the building’s power consumption.
  • Second, it has the capacity to generate approximately 100,000 kWh of electricity annually.

This amount of clean, renewable energy can power nine average American homes for a year, reducing CO2 emissions by roughly 89 metric tons. This is equivalent to removing approximately 19 gasoline-powered vehicles from the road annually, highlighting the project’s substantial environmental impact.

“We are deeply grateful to Mat and Cindi Heck for their visionary support of this important project, which represents MetroParks’ first solar project and a major next step in the agency’s conservation initiatives,” said Alexis Larsen, Five Rivers MetroParks’ chief of philanthropy. “Together, we are taking a critical step forward in our journey toward a more sustainable and resilient community.”

The solar panel installation increases the 2nd Street Market’s support of MetroParks’ conservation mission to protect the region’s natural heritage. The Market also provides the community access to fresh, local food, which is often healthier and less taxing on the environment. Additionally, shopping from local small businesses means food and products are transported shorter distances, further reducing the carbon footprint of shoppers. Renewable energy joins recycling and composting as ways in which the Market is committed to operating sustainably.

“Five Rivers MetroParks is proud to lead by example, demonstrating how local actions can contribute to global climate change mitigation goals,” MetroParks CEO Karen Hesser said. “This installation not only represents a stride toward energy independence, but it also serves as a tangible demonstration of the benefits of solar power, offering an educational opportunity for the public. It underscores the importance of renewable energy in achieving a sustainable future and complements the Market’s mission to provide the community with access to fresh, local food.”

The solar panels were installed by Appalachian Renewable Power (ARP Solar), which was awarded the project through a competitive bidding process.

“The Market’s newest ‘green’ upgrades are a great example of a project that would not have been possible without philanthropic support,” said Larsen.

This is the second large MetroParks project funded by Cindi and Mat Heck. In 2021 they funded updated seating and shade sails at the RiverScape River Run terrace.

Lucy’s Pastry Palace Grand Opening at the 2nd Street Market

March 15, 2024 By Guest Contributor

Lucy’s Pastry Palace now has a permanent booth at the 2nd Street Market. They will celebrate their grand opening this Saturday, March 16.

Introduced to authentic Armenian pastries since childhood, Owner Tamara Cerovcevic’s passion for baking led her to search for a way to share authentic Armenian and international recipes she gathered from family and friends across her travels. In searching for an opportunity, she found 2nd Street Market and fell in love with the welcoming management, staff, vendors, and amazing customers.

When Tamara’s granddaughter Lucy was three years old, she told her Baba, “When I grow up, I will have a palace, we will all live in it together, and you will bake for me.” When she decided to start her bakery in 2021, Tamara named it Lucy’s Pastry Palace, paving the path to her granddaughter’s dream.

Tamara now offers extensive authentic international gourmet pastries, including gluten-friendly and vegan products at the 2nd Street Market. She loves the challenge of being introduced to ethnic pastries from around the world. Tamara’s baking takes you back to your childhood memories and the nostalgic feeling from your grandma’s delicious pastries. Lucy’s Pastry Palace is at the west end of the Market across from the Market office.

2nd Street Market to Reinstitute Friday hours, Adds Vendors & Special Events

November 24, 2021 By Dayton937

The 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second St. in downtown Dayton, will extended its hours to include Fridays starting Nov. 26. The 2nd Street Market will be open Fridays and Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 3 pm.

Featuring fresh, local food; pantry staples; and hand-crafted items, the Market offers a one-stop shopping experience where visitors can grab lunch and shop for groceries and gifts.

“With the potential challenges many stores face this holiday season in terms of supply chain issues and longer shipping times, we’re lucky to offer many items that are locally grown, sourced and crafted,” said 2nd Street Market Manager Lynda Suda. “You’ll find one-of-a-kind gift items and fresh, locally grown food. Additionally, when you shop at the Market, you’re supporting small business owners, which keeps your dollars in our local economy.

Along with the addition of Friday hours, the Market will offer special shopping days, workshops and events throughout the holiday season.

The Market will be open the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, Nov. 24, from 11 am to 3 pm for its annual Stock Up Wednesday event. During Stock Up Wednesday, visitors can grab recipe essentials, prepared foods and more before the holiday. Additionally, the Market will be open on New Year’s Day, Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, from 11 am to 3 pm.

Special shopping days and additional hours give shoppers the chance to pick up holiday meal essentials — most of them locally produced — as well as flowers, wreaths and prepared foods. Offerings include:

  • Fresh, local fare: Locally grown produce, artisan bread, prepared desserts, and local meat and dairy
  • Specialty food items: Jams, salsas, teas, jellies, candy and chocolate
  • Holiday décor: Flowers, ornaments and handmade holiday items
  • Artisan gifts: Jewelry, candles, art glass, body care and more

Those looking for gifts can also purchase Market Money, allowing the recipient to shop at any Market vendor.

Special events, workshops and more

Those looking for a festive family outing, DIY gifts and more can visit the Market during one of many special occasions this season. The Market’s vendors also will make an appearance at the nearby MetroParks Ice Rink at RiverScape MetroPark, 237 E. Monument Ave., most Saturdays in December.

  • Artisan Night: Visit the Market on Thursday, Dec. 16, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm for an evening of live music and holiday shopping.
  • Vendor Workshops: From creating glass ornaments to perfecting cookie decorations, the Market’s vendors will offer workshops during which participants get hands on and take away DYI creations. Learn more.
  • Holiday Mini Market at RiverScape MetroPark: Start your day by at the MetroParks Ice Rink then shop from some of the Market’s vendors in the Kettering Health warming tent. The rink also will offer concessions from the Market’s vendors at the RiverScape Café. Treats will be available on select Saturdays and Sundays while supplies last. Learn more.

Equitable Eats

Homefull, a local nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness, will be at the Market Fridays through Sundays providing SNAP tokens to those who utilize EBT/SNAP benefits. More than 20 vendors accept SNAP tokens. Additionally, those who qualify for EBT/SNAP can use Produce Perks, a matching program that reimburses up to $20 for those who use their benefits on fresh produce.

The 2nd Street Market is home to more than 50 small business vendors and will continue to add more throughout the season, including Abbi’s Baked Goods, Tinka’s Treats, Frost Me, Beautiful, Mrs. Ernestine’s Pound Cakes and the Scrumptious Dessert.

Homestyle Thai Bistro  and I Heart Ice Cream just recently opened inside the Market.

Some vendors from the outdoor Market have moved inside for the winter season, such as C & A Woodworking, Speakeasy Treats, Earth Empress and Eze Foods. Harry’s Ole’d Country Orchard, Mike Creek Farm and Guided by Mushrooms will sell produce indoors through most of the holiday season.

Conservation Mission

By providing the community access to fresh, local food – which is often healthier and less taxing on the environment – the Market supports Five Rivers MetroParks’ mission to protect the region’s natural heritage. Additionally, shopping from local small businesses means food and products are transported shorter distances, further reducing shoppers’ carbon footprint.

In accordance with MetroParks’ COVID-19 policies, face coverings are required inside the 2nd Street Market regardless of vaccination status. Learn more about the 2nd Street Market at www.metroparks.org/localfood.

Order Ahead and Get Drive-Thru Pick up at 2nd Street Market

November 17, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second St. in downtown Dayton, is now offering a pre-order drive-thru pick up on Saturdays that allows customers to safely and conveniently support their favorite Market vendors. Several vendors will participate, including many artisan vendors who sell items that make unique holiday gifts.

Here’s how it works:

  • Customers must order in advance directly from vendors. Ordering deadlines vary by vendor. No walk-up sales will be offered.
  • Vendor participation will vary week to week. Vendor sales information is at metroparks.org/localfood.
  • In most cases, customers also need to pay in advance. The exceptions are for three cash-only vendors: Garber Farms and Irvin Honey, which are delivering orders at the garage doors by their booths on the north side of the Market, and Cheeky Meat Pies, which is delivering frozen pies at the second door in the drive thru. Advance orders are still required for these three vendors.
  • Customers then pick up their pre-orders using the drive-thru on Saturdays any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

    Azra’s Mediterranean Cuisine

  • The drive-thru is located on the Market’s south side, and the entrance is at the east end of the building.
  • Customers will remain in their vehicles. At the first door, a greeter determines which orders customers are picking up and directs them to the appropriate door for pick up. There, orders are delivered to customers’ vehicles.
  • The drive-thru will take place on Wednesdays rather than Saturdays during the weeks of Thanksgiving (open Wednesday, Nov. 25) and Christmas (open Wednesday, Dec. 23). Pick up hours remain 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Azra’s Mediterranean Cuisine is delivering orders at the garage door located next to the ATM machine ramp at the center of the north side of the Market.
  • Shoppers must wear a face covering while interacting with greeters and those delivering orders to vehicles, as well as when interacting with cash-only vendors.
  • Customers will not have access to the interior of the Market building, including restrooms.
  • The drive-thru pick up will be offered in November and December.

“The 2nd Street Market was able to offer an outdoor market on Saturdays that allowed during the summer and fall growing seasons, which allowed customers to shop safely for their favorite locally grown foods despite the pandemic,” said Lynda Suda, Market manager. “The drive-thru pick up will allow customers to keep supporting those Market vendors during the holiday season.”

CSA Fair and Seed Swap at 2nd Street Market

January 23, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Make 2020 the year of personal and environmental health. Come to the annual “Meet Your CSA Farmer, Share Your Seeds” event on Saturday, Jan. 25, 9 AM to 2 PM, in the Market Pavilion. Swap your labeled heirloom or open-pollinated seeds with other gardeners and sign up for a fee-based CSA (community supported agriculture) subscription.

Seed swapping promotes diversity in and increases the quantity of locally grown produce, which farmers pack into CSA boxes that subscribers pick up at a designated location every week, from late spring to early fall. Buying seasonal produce directly from local farms not only supports small business owners in our community, it provides fresher food and cuts down on the carbon waste inherent in grocery store produce, which is often transported from other states and countries.

If picking up a CSA box would be challenging for you, ask one of the farmers at the event about delivery options.

Once you’ve signed up, you may be looking for creative ways to use all that produce from your new CSA box? Come to  the Contemporary Cuisine: A Market Cooking Demonstration With Invoke, with Invoke owners Larry and Lester Gates, on Feb. 13 from 11 AM to noon The class is free to attend, no reservations required.. Take notes while Chef Lester prepares one of his favorite dishes, and then join in the exclusive tasting option. Lester is an accomplished chef, having worked for such local restaurants as L’Auberge, Sidebar, Salar, Taste Creative Cuisine and Lucky’s Taproom, and we’re thrilled that he’ll be hosting this cooking demonstration for 2nd Street Market patrons.

2nd Street Market Now Open Sunday

June 3, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The 2nd Street Market will host its season kick off the first weekend in June, featuring summer staples such as the outdoor farmers market and the return of Sunday hours.

“Sunday hours were such a success last season that we have decided to extend this program even further into the year,” said Market Manager Jimmy Harless. “We always strive to address the needs of the community, whether it’s extending hours or hosting vendors who accept SNAP benefits.”

  • Kick off of Sundays at the Market: Sunday, June 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Expanding on a pilot that launched during summer 2017, the 2nd Street Market will welcome Sunday hours again this year. The kick-off of Sundays at the Market will include live music, shopping and a chance to milk a live dairy cow in celebration of National Dairy Month.

Market patrons will enjoy more than 40 vendors Many of the regular Saturday vendors will be open during First Friday and on Sundays, offering delicious prepared food, fresh produce, artisan goods and more each Sunday. Extending even further into the year, Sunday hours will now run through the holiday season, ending Dec. 31.

For a complete list of vendors at the 2nd Street Market visit the Market’s Facebook page or www.metroparks.org/localfood.

In an effort to make fresh, local food more accessible to the public, nearly 30 Market vendors now accept SNAP tokens thanks to a partnership with Homefull, a nonprofit working to end homelessness. Additionally, Produce Perks will also be available throughout the year. An incentive program for those who use an Ohio Direction Card (SNAP) to purchase produce, Produce Perks provides a dollar-for-dollar match to every dollar spent (up to $20 per visit) — double last year’s matching amount.

“The 2nd Street Market helps Five Rivers MetroParks serve as the region’s conservation leader by providing our community convenient access to local food, which is less taxing on the environment and often healthier,” Harless said. “By welcoming additional summer vendors, expanding hours and participating in programs such as Produce Perks, we are able to broaden accessibility to fresh food which is important to community health and wellness.”

2nd Street Market Partners with Homefull For Fresh Local Food Options

June 24, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

SNAPNearly 30 vendors at the 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second St. in downtown Dayton, now accept SNAP/food assistance Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) tokens thanks to a partnership with Homefull, a nonprofit organization working to end homelessness. Participating vendors offer fresh food items, such as produce, dairy products, meat, specialty foods and bread.

This new partnership addresses a significant community need: According to Homefull and area news outlets, 23 percent of households in the Dayton area struggle with food hardship — the fourth highest rate in the United States. When compared to the rest of Ohio, Montgomery County has a higher proportion of residents who receive public benefits yet a lower number of SNAP/EBT and WIC-authorized vendors.
“The 2nd Street Market helps Five Rivers MetroParks serve as the region’s conservation leader by providing our community convenient access to local food, which is less taxing on the environment and often healthier,” said Market Manager Jimmy Harless. “This partnership with Homefull helps the Market provide new customers with more options for stocking their kitchens with locally grown and produced food.”

The partnership is funded by a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture aimed at increasing SNAP/EBT redemption at farmers markets in Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties.

Also new at the 2nd Street Market on Saturdays, Homefull Solutions will sell fresh produce grown by clients at its microfarm, located on the grounds of the men’s Gateway shelter on Gettysburg Avenue. Homefull Solutions also operates a community supported agriculture (CSA) program and The Market at Wright Stop Plaza.

“We’re excited to make it more convenient for our clients and the community to purchase fresh, healthy, local produce,” said Tina Patterson, Homefull’s chief executive officer. “This partnership also provides our clients with access to paying jobs, teaches them productive skills through meaningful activity and improves self-esteem.”
The 2nd Street Market is open Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 40 vendors offer such kitchen staples as bread, milk, cheese, meats, oils, flour and more. The Market was named Best Farmers Market on the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Best of Ohio Readers’ Ballot from Ohio Magazine. The list of winners was generated by votes cast by Ohio Magazine’s website visitors each fall. Learn more about the 2nd Street Market at metroparks.org/localfood.

Other vendors may join the indoor and outdoor mix during the summer season. Visit the website or follow the 2nd Street Market on Facebook for updates. The 2nd Street Market is open Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 2nd Street Market was been named the Best Farmers Market on the 2014 Best of Ohio Readers’ Ballot from Ohio Magazine. The list of winners was generated by votes cast by Ohio Magazine’s website visitors this past fall.

“The 2nd Street Market helps Five Rivers MetroParks serve as the region’s conservation leader by providing our community convenient access to local food, which is less taxing on the environment and often healthier,” said Market Manager Jimmy Harless. “These new vendors will give our customers even more options for stocking their kitchens with locally grown and produced food. Many people know the 2nd Street Market is a great place to grab lunch and shop for gift, household, food and other items — and they are having a positive impact on our region’s natural heritage at the same time.”

Rue FarmsThere’s  a new vendor at the 2nd Street Market-  Rue Farms!

“When one season ends, another begins” which is the case for Matt and Jeanne who call Springfield home to Rue Farms. Their Ohio Proud, natural farm focuses on growing hay and grassfed beef but since so much of their livelihood is so weather dependent they decided to branch out and create a whole line of farm fresh products like their delicious locally-made potato chips in 6 flavors.  They offer 4 Flavors of Fudge, Truffles, Natural Pecan, Caramel Candy, Peanut Brittle, Kettle Corn, Belgian Covered Bananas and Strawberries.

Their items are all ready-to-eat and are the perfect treat to have after lunch at the Market. Find them in the middle of the Market three days a week.  According to their website they also have a line of pies and bread and also offer catering.

Follow our advice and you’re sure to be a hit with the family, with some of the best local gifts around.

Consider this The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House’s,  Gift Giving guide to the 2nd street Market with a Food Adventure twist.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

 — The 2nd Street Market is located near downtown at 600 E. 2nd Street and is open 3 days: Thursday & Friday 11am-3pm,  and Saturday 8am – 3pm.

Some of the Best Toffee on Earth: Click to enlarge this local treasure

— Dozens of local vendors from crafts to wine, and of course, local foodstuffs.

MUST GIFTS:

— THE TOFFEE from SWEET NOTHINGS : Our favorite flavor is the Dark Almond Sea Salt Toffee.  Actually, all of the toffees use sea salt.  Other great flavors are Milk Chocolate Macadamia Nut and Dark Chocolate Cashew.  A great gift for the chocolate lovers in the family.  The Big Ragu considers Sweet Nothings his favorite toffee of all time.

— THE OLIVE OILS from THE OLIVE TREE : Have friends or family that love to cook ? Here is a perfect gift idea.  This vendor has some amazing, flavor infused olive oils.  May we suggest our favorite, the Sundried Tomato Parmesan Garlic Olive Oil.  You can actually sample all of the olive oils and choose your favorite from the many unique flavors.  We also love the Basil Flavored Olive Oil and the Strawberry Peach Balsamic Vinegar Olive Oil.

— SALSA and SAUCES from WALT’S HOMEMADE SALSA :  Family owned operation, selling jars of salsas in various styles and spiciness.  Some extra hot, some medium and some mild, their products are extremely tasty.  You can even sample Walt’s new lines of BBQ Sauces that are also available by the jar.  Their gift baskets make a fun Christmas present with a local twist !

— HOMEMADE ITEMS from MONCO INDUSTRIES:  Monco is a local company that provides jobs for special needs people or local residents with disabilities.  The result is a win-win for the community.  Great gifts made by a great organization.  Our favorite gifts here are the pet treats and the stuffed animals.  Make sure you stop by and get a gift from this company, and share the true meaning of Christmas.

— HANDCRAFTED BELTS and LEATHER CUFFS from VINTAGELIZ 1974:  We say, “these gifts are pretty kick ass.”  Timeless, leather accessories, made by hand in Dayton.  Take some time to check out this cool vendor.

— SCARVES from NEW WORLD ALPACA TEXTILES:  Perfect winter gift!  They have various items made with fleece from alpaca animals that are raised in a local farm in Brookville.  The also sell socks and beautiful artisan rugs !   Great gifts this time of the year.

Must Gifts: The Specialty Olive Oils at The Olive Tree

Honorable Mention:  The Wine Gallery also has some good deals on unique wines, and a friendly service staff.  Want unique?  How about Maria’s Unique Foods, with wild selections like jars of pickled eggs in various flavors.  They also have great gift basket ideas.

For all of us that love to buy local when we can, the 2nd Street market is a great place to ‘put your money where your mouth is. ‘  We have mentioned some of our favorites, but there are many more vendors with great gift ideas.  Avoid the crowds SHOP LOCAL!
