WSU Motion Picture Junior’s Present annual DOC NIGHT

Juniors in Wright State University’s acclaimed Motion Pictures program will premiere short documentary films during the annual DOC NIGHT. This year DOC NIGHT will feature 17 short documentary films screened over two hours with an intermission.

A questions-and-answer session with the students will be held after the screening. Many documentaries screened at past DOC NIGHTs have gone onto play at film festivals around the country.

“Motion Pictures juniors in the Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures Department have spent the past semester creating a collection of short documentary films exploring stories that make an impact in our community and beyond”; said Kyle Wilkinson, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Tom Hanks Center for Motion Pictures. Wilkinson is the lead advisor and instructor for these projects and is himself a graduate of Wright State’s Motion Pictures program.

Department Chair, Joe Deer, said “These short films often tell deeply human stories about people in our community that many of us may have encountered, or whose amazing stories come as a complete surprise. The evening offers a wide range of voices – from deeply personal and thought provoking to humorous and quirky, and they’re always very well-crafted. DOC NIGHT is one of the two annual events that give Dayton audiences a chance to celebrate the work of these emerging filmmakers. This year, it’ll be online and available to everyone at home.” Past DOC NIGHT filmmakers have gone on to win Emmy and Academy Awards. So, this may be your chance to see future award winners.

This is a free screening and takes place on Friday, Dec. 4, 6:30-9:00 pm with an encore showing on Thursday Dec. 10^th from 6:30-9:00pm. Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction Online

The Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA) has some unique gift ideas for the craft beer enthusiast on your holiday shopping list. The inaugural Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction features dozens of beer-centric experience packages donated by Ohio breweries and other supporters of the state’s brewing industry. Available experiences include canoe and bike trips with brewers, private brewery tours, opportunities to create and brew new beers, and much more.

The Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction will be held online from Dec. 3-12, 2020. Many of the donated experiences are designed for individuals or small groups in order to comply with protocols designed to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Several have an outdoor component or can be redeemed at a future date when public health conditions are favorable. Proceeds from the sale of each package benefit OCBA, the non-profit organization formed to promote, protect, diversify and unify Ohio’s craft breweries.

In normal times, OCBA relies on income from popular beer tasting events like Winter Warmer Fest in Cleveland and Six One Pour in Columbus. OCBA uses those funds to advocate for craft beer-friendly legislation at the Ohio statehouse, provide educational resources to member breweries, offer valuable marketing reach through programs like the Ohio On Tap app, and to facilitate collaboration and cooperation among Ohio’s breweries so they can continue to make world class, award-winning beer.

With state and local restrictions on large gatherings still in place to slow the spread of coronavirus, OCBA has been forced to cancel several fundraising events in 2020 and 2021. To generate revenue crucial to furthering the organization’s mission, OCBA has launched several new campaigns this year. Ohio Brew Haul was rolled out in May to encourage craft beer fans to order beer for carry out and delivery from their local breweries. Ohio Pint Day followed in October with more than 110 breweries offering a collectible pint glass with art by Adam Hernandez. OCBA is also offering limited edition sweatshirts in connection with next year’s planned Winter Warmer Cask Day, to be held in place of a large public tasting event.

“Craft beer has always been about more than just the liquid in the glass,” said OCBA executive director Mary MacDonald. “Our members have graciously donated their time and effort to create these unique experiences to connect with craft beer fans. We greatly appreciate the support of our breweries and Ohio beer enthusiasts as we continue to navigate the challenges brought on by the pandemic.”

Founded in 2007, the Ohio Craft Brewers Association is a nonprofit guild that exists to promote, preserve, diversify and unify Ohio’s craft brewing industry. The Dayton NAACP Has a New Home

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) – a Quaker organization that has been working for peace and justice for more than 100 years – donated their former Dayton office building to the Dayton Unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The Dayton NAACP, also founded more than a century ago, is the city’s oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization.

When AFSC closed its program in Dayton, AFSC staff met with community elders who had long been supporters of the program to discuss what came next. They requested the building go to a like-minded social justice organization, and AFSC approached the local branch of the NAACP.

“We are so happy we are able to pass this building on to the Dayton NAACP,” said Sharon Goens-Bradley, Interim Regional Director for AFSC’s Midwest region. “The work they are doing with communities in Ohio and across the country is critically important, and we are grateful to contribute this building to the ongoing struggle for racial justice.”

The building, located at 915 Salem Avenue, was built on 1918 and housed AFSC since the early 1960s. Over the decades, it’s been a hub for anti-war activism, youth programs, anti-apartheid work, immigration and labor rights movements, and racial justice organizing. The building will now be home to the Dayton NAACP’s efforts to end racism and advance the political, educational, social and economic rights of all people.

“After viewing the annual reports of the Dayton Unit NAACP, it is clear that the work accomplished during your tenure as the president has been outstanding,” said Patricia Trammell, Building Management Committee Clerk. “You have been president of our local unit since 2007 and seven administrations you have assembled over the years reflect the great diversity of our community. It is amazing to read that our local Dayton unit has been recognized by the national NAACP for eight years in a row with the Thalheimer Award. It is a pleasure to learn so much about the Dayton NAACP ‘s outstanding programs; and that your local active staff /volunteers would be happy to move into the AFSC building,” said Trammell. “AFSC has been blessed to operate hundreds of programs from our building since 1964 and we know you will appreciate it being your property soon,” said Trammell.

“Since March 2020, it has been a pleasure working with the American Friends Service Committee on the donation of their building, as well as negotiating other aspects of the business,” said Dr. Derrick L. Foward, President of the Dayton NAACP. “It was very intriguing to hear about the extensive amount of research the Dayton AFSC Building Management Committee conducted before making a final decision to offer the building to the Dayton NAACP. Reviewing our annual reports, investigating how the Dayton NAACP received the Thalheimer for eight consecutive years in a row – the highest award any local Unit can receive from the national NAACP – and interviewing various Dayton NAACP Executive Committee Members were all very impressive techniques used during the decision-making process. We appreciate the leadership, judgment and wisdom of Sharon Goens-Bradley, and Patricia Trammell, Building Manager Committee Clerk and are humbled by this newfound partnership,” said Foward.

The Dayton Dragons Foundation has launched a special online 50/50 raffle presented by Day Air Credit Union, with proceeds benefitting The Dayton Foodbank.

Co-op Downtown Restaurant Delivery Service Now Available

Our local restaurants have been struggling during the pandemic and as many of you may have read, traditional meal delivery services like Door Dash and Uber Eats charge these businesses up to 30% of the order in handling and delivery fees.

So Co-Op Dayton, Flyer Consulting and local downtown eateries have banded together to launch a delivery service co-op that will be owned by the restaurants as well as the employees that will deliver the meals.

Starting small, the delivery zone for 937 Delivers is currently within five miles of downtown and here’s the line up of the restaurants that are participating:

Restaurants Going Into Hibernation

Ok As the temperature drops, a new trend is emerging in the Miami Valley’s struggling restaurant scene: shutting down completely for the coming winter and reopening in the spring, when a vaccine may be out.

Several restaurants around the city have closed their dining rooms- just offering carry out, others have closed their doors to hunker down through the coldest months of the year until there is a better handle on Covid 19 infections. For many, they say it is their best chance of reopening in 2021.

Basil’s On Market – Dayton, OH

Culp’s Cafe

Dayton History officials announced that Culp’s Café on the grounds of Carillon Historical Park in Dayton also will close until spring.

Meadowlark Restaurant

will be closed until Tuesday, December 1st. When we re-open, we will be doing carryout ONLY during our regular hours for lunch and dinner, and will keep the dining room closed at least until the Montgomery County Stay-At-Home Advisory ends. That date at this point is December 17. Please stay tuned for further information.

St. Anne the Tart

On the heels of the stay-home advisory and real-time updates from doctors that multiple floors of our hospitals are now filled with COVID patients, we’ve decided to close our brick-and-mortar (dine-in and carry-out) starting now through the rest of 2020. Our hope and expectation is to reevaluate the climate and circumstances as facts change and to reopen dine-in once again in January 2021.

But, please know, we are 𝗡𝗢𝗧 closing St. Anne the Tart. We’ll sell lots of take-and-bake and holiday swag for gift giving (Shopify link is above ☝️ and will be added to often! ). We’ll rent out the greenhouse for date nights and then deep clean like crazy for the next one. We’ll be taking custom orders as always! We will be opening for pre-scheduled shopping trips to our The Tart at Home pop-up shop. We will still make birthday cakes and celebratory desserts. And we may even have a few surprises up our sleeves…

Such A Night: The Last Waltz with the Dayton Philharmonic

It was such a night! In 2018, nearly 30 local musicians gathered on stage to recreate the historic performances of The Band’s The Last Waltz and celebrate the original concert, which took place November 25, 1976. That year they were joined by the Dayton Philharmonic orchestra under the conduction of Neal Gittleman.

For the fifth year in a row, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is partnering with Subaru of Dayton to bring a new car into one lucky person’s life through the Snag a Subaru Raffle.

Purchase your Snag a Subaru raffle tickets today and you will have a 1 in 3,000 chance to win a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek! That’s better odds than with any lottery around! Snag a Subaru raffle tickets are just $25 each. You must be 18 years old to purchase tickets. This year’s winning car has a white exterior and black interior.

All money raised from the sale of these raffle tickets goes to help the animals at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, a no-kill shelter and the oldest animal welfare agency in the Miami Valley.

You do not need your ticket stubs to be entered into the drawing. The physical ticket will be filled out for all tickets purchased online or over the phone prior to the drawing. Your ticket stubs will not be mailed to you, but can be picked up at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Upon request, your ticket numbers can be emailed to you following your purchase.

Link: Dayton Bike Share is planning to expand its network of bike hubs to two Dayton neighborhoods. The Huffman Historic Area and Carillon neighborhoods will see hubs installed next spring.

The City of Dayton, who is supporting the expansion, is a critical partner in helping Link connect to neighborhood leadership. “Link: Dayton Bike Share has been an amazing resource for keeping our city active and bike-friendly. I am glad to see this expansion happening in the Carillon and Huffman neighborhoods, and I know it will be a great amenity to our residents,” says Mayor Whaley.

“Bike Miami Valley has spent some time at a few neighborhood meetings now explaining the project and gathering neighborhood input. Our neighbors are looking forward to using the bikes on the Great Miami River Trail and connecting to the restaurants on Brown Street,” said Carillon Neighborhood President Gwen Buchanan.

Link: Dayton Bike Share recently evolved to a hub-based system this past summer that uses the Link Dayton app to access the fleet of Green Link bikes and electric eLink bikes. “One of the goals of this evolution was to make it less capital intensive for Link to expand,” says Laura Estandia, Executive Director of Bike Miami Valley. “We are thrilled to be bringing bike share to more Dayton neighborhoods as a result of this change.”

Exact locations in both neighborhoods are still in the planning phases. “The Huffman Historic Area has been experiencing such exciting reinvestment and revitalization, and the decision to add a new Link hub within or boundaries is just one more fantastic element to continue that excitement,” says neighborhood President Matt Jahn. “It not only adds an amenity to our residents but helps better connect Huffman, its neighbors, and businesses to Downtown in a responsible and sustainable way. We can’t wait to have the Link hub finalized and support its use.”
