The Quest For Dayton’s Best Dive Bar Continues

December 29, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the colloquial use of the word dive to describe a “drinking den” or “other disreputable place of resort” comes from the fact that these types of establishments were originally housed in cellars or basements, into which “frequenters may ‘dive’ without observation.

The Urban Dictionary defines a Dive Bar as
“A well-worn, unglamorous bar, often serving a cheap, simple selection of drinks to a regular clientele. The term can describe anything from a comfortable-but-basic neighborhood pub to the nastiest swill-slinging hole. You don’t need to dress up; we’re just going to the dive bar down the street. “

The August 2010 issue of  Playboy magazine described a dive bar as:

A church for down-and-outers and those who romanticize them, a rare place where high and low rub elbows—bums and poets, thieves and slumming celebrities. It’s a place that wears its history proudly.

Our own Mixologist Brian Petro has been leading the team on the exploration of  Dayton’s Dive Bars in 2016 and over the past year there’s been some serious exploration of these bars, as well as some even more serious discussion on what defines a dive bar.  We do agree that most dive bars serve very affordable drinks and are most likely to be populated by folks in their neighborhood.  From there are opinions were about as different as the establishments we visited.  Guess we’ll just have to keep exploring and chat more.

“It’s hard to define what makes a dive a dive, but you know it when you see one.”

Here are the places we’ve visited in 2016.  Click on the name to read more about the experience we’ve had at each of these places.  They are listed in the order that we visited.

Miami Valley Sports Bar – the addition of Tillie’s Tap Room make elevate this out of the dive bar category

Dog’s Breath Tavern – look for the $2.42 specials on Tuesday evening and food trucks are welcomed

Phone Booth Lounge – food and drink prices priced right

Sure Shots – a nice selection of music on the juke box, and the soft glow of a Jägermeister machine

Time Out Cavern – throws one of the best Derby watch parties in town

Diplomat Lounge– this is a place where darts appear to be king

McGillicutty’s – extensive food menu and some of the best wings in town and just 50 cents on Monday

Mack’s Tavern – got national buzz for leaving coupons on cars that stayed park and cabbed home

Adrienne’s White Rabbit Lounge – intimate and welcoming

Dr. Doodles Lounge – hard to find, but easy to feel comfortable here

Dark Horse Tavern – closed in July reopened in November

As we roll into 2017 what dive bars should be on our list to visit?  How do you define a dive bar?  Make your suggestions in the comments below:

From Daytime TV to The Stage At Blind Bob’s

December 21, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

zac_pitts_oct_2015You probably know Zac Pitts from his day job, as a host of Living Dayton on WDTN. But when he’s not hosting the daytime show, he’s been working with his band and they are getting ready for their debut show in Dayton. Recently we had the opportunity to talk with him and find out a little more about him.  And here’s what Zac shared with us,  “A lot of people I grew up with know I have passion for making music. I was always the kid in class drumming on text books and playing air guitar! My dream growing up was to be a rockstar! I don’t think a lot of people who watch Living Dayton know that about me.”

We asked him how his band got the name Flee the Valley?
img_2018
The meaning of the band name comes from a discussion I’ve had with several people since I’ve moved back home to Dayton. It seems like everyone tries to leave the area because they don’t think Dayton is “good enough” or “there’s nothing to do”. However, by some force of nature, Dayton always has a way of pulling you back to it, and you’re ok with it! You don’t realize how great it is or how much you appreciate it until you leave it for a few years.

How did the members of your band meet?
The drummer, Matt Harm and I have known each other since 2nd grade. We both attended St. Anthony Elementary School in Dayton. In high school we both played in a pop punk band called “Banknine”. There’s absolutely no significance for the name… (for some reason it just sounded really cool to us). He’s our X-factor when it comes to taking a song to the next level with intricate beats.

I met Mike Davis through Matt. We occasionally would jam in high school. He’s definitely the one that brings an extra edge to our band’s sound.

Meeting Steven Willis is perhaps the coolest story…Over the summer my girlfriend and I went to the Blink-182 concert in Cincinnati. We we’re lucky enough to get VIP tickets that allowed us into the venue early to see the band sound check. If that wasn’t already cool enough, the band invited three fans to come on stage and help them sound check by performing their song, “All the Small Things”. I was picked to play guitar and sing…the person picked to play bass was Steven. We didn’t know each other at the time, but weeks later he started following me on twitter. We discovered we both lived in the same area and it just so happened the band I was starting still needed a bassist. He was the perfect fit. If that’s not fate, I don’t know what is!
img_2025
How long have you been together? Describe your bands style and inspiration.
The band started in June of this year. The band wasn’t a complete until Steven arrived in late August. Our genre is considered pop-punk. It’s a genre all of us grew up listening and ultimately makes us feel like a kid! Some people say the genre is dead, but we feel like it’s coming back! We all grew up listening to bands like Green Day, New Found Glory, Fall Out Boy, Alkaline Trio and of course Blink-182. While we have a strong connection to those influences, we’re constantly looking for ways to stand out and be original. A perfect song in our eyes involves catchy lyrics with punchy guitars and loud drums!

Here’s a link to the lyric video of their first single, “Lose it All” :

We’ve been recording music and hope to release our album EP by February.

Can you share with us each band members favorite song?
Zac  Pitts– Lead vocals and Guitar  Blink-182: “Dumpweed”
Mike Davis-Lead Guitar & Vocals– Issues: “Issues”
Matt Harm- Drums– Foo Fighter’s: “Ever Long”
Steven Willis – Bass – Alkaline Trio: “Radio”

The band’s first show is at Blind Bob’s on Friday, December 23rd at 9:30pm.  They’ll be playing with two other local bands, Nightbeast and You vs. Yesterday.  For more info on Flee The Valley, follow them on Facebook, twitter and Instagram.

Bloody Mary Showdown Returns

December 15, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

makenzie-1Are you a Bloody Mary Fan?  If your answer is yes, better mark your calendar for Sunday, Jan 15th, as that’s the day the Bloody Mary Showdown returns to the Coliseum at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

Last held in October of 2014, defending champion MacKenzie Manley of Mack’s Tavern will be back to defend her title.  Her winning cocktail was  Mack’s BBQ Burger Mary- a smokey, hearty, beefed up BBQ bloody mary that has a spicy sriracha  salted rim and garnished with a sweet lil smokey wrapped in yummy caramelized bacon slice.

Second place was claimed by Tim Gross, representing McGillicutty’s Pub in Kettering.  Tim shared with us that he started out as a customer, then worked the door, helped at as a bar back and eventually learned to bartend at the neighborhood tavern.  He only works on Sunday’s and that shift helped him perfect his drink, which he calls Tim’s Sunday Vacation, garnished with a small salad, including celery, olive and green beans.

The ladies of Lucky’s Taproom & Eatery, which serves up brunch every weekend on Fifth Street,  and were picked by many as the favorites heading into the contest, took third place  with a bloody Erin Welch called the Radical Tomato.

This year’s Showdown will be fueled by Svedka Vodka which will give the bartenders a choice from their traditional 14089040_10153678088961875_6567068222388445604_nvodka or one of their flavored products, as well as Whole Foods, which will be providing some of the ingredients for the bartenders, like limes, celery, tomato juice and a few others.   Think you’ve got what it takes to win the Best Bloody Mary bragging rights?

The 2nd Bloody Mary Showdown takes place on Saturday, October 11th  from 11am to 2pm at The Coliseum at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. There are two ways you can participate in this event: you can compete for the title of “Best Bloody Mary in Dayton” or you can judge the entries!

Think your Bloody Mary has what it takes?  PROVE IT!

bloody17To enter the competition, click here. There is a $25 entrance fee and we will provide you with vodka,  sample cups, celery,  sip sticks, ice and a covered table.  You bring your own bloody mary mix and any special garnishes you’d like.

What can you win? First place gets $300,  will be featured on MostMetro.com and wins a 3 month advertising contract as well as having bragging rights for a year!

Want to judge the entries?  Your opinion counts, participants will  vote for Dayton’s Best Bloody Mary!  You’ll get to sample at least six 3oz cocktails and enjoy some brunch snacks .  You can purchase a judging package online for $25, or if available at the door for $30 from 11: 30-2pm.  VIP tickets will allow for early entry at 11am and include a VIP Swag Back for $40.

Proceeds from the Bloody Mary Showdown this year will  benefit the Greater Dayton LGBT Center, who work to enhance the lives of sexual minorities in Dayton and the Miami Valley.

It’s Time To Get “TIEBER TOUGH”

December 13, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

tieberThat nasty C word.  I hear it and just shake my head.  Especially when I hear it associated with a women who is nothing but kind and strong and a marvelous mother.

Suzie Tieber, mom to Sydney and Chase, wife of Steve and co-owner of The Dublin Pub has been diagnosed with Cancer.  She’ll be undergoing a double mastectomy on Wednesday morning.

img_8833

Sydney’s  7th grade girls basketball team at Bellbrook Middle School was to play Preble Shawnee HS/MS tonight and the plan was  to present her with a special shirt made for her hospital stay five minutes before the game began.   They team was to then unveil as a surprise the special ‘Tieber Tough’ jersey which they would all  wear and dedicate the game to Suzie.

Additionally, over 300 T-shirts were made with the same ‘Tieber Tough‘ logo that friends and family will wear, sending pictures & messages to Suzie on her “Lets Support Suzie Tieber” Facebook event page. The shirts were donated by Ty Camacho from Miami Valley Team Sports and a donation has been asked for each shirt.

But alas Mother Nature put a kabash on that plan and the game was cancelled tonight due to the snow.

Breaking News: Montgomery County Fairgrounds Has A Buyer (or Two)

December 2, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

1600px-exposition_hall_montgomery_county_fairgroundsWe’ve heard through a source that a deal has been struck to sell the Montgomery County  Fairgrounds for a reported sum of $15 million dollars.  The 2017 fair will continue at the current location.  Plans beyond that have not been revealed

Earlier this week The City of Dayton, Montgomery County Commissioners and the Montgomery County Agriculture Society rejected two offers that had been submitted from Miller-Valentine Group and Indiana’s Thompson Thrift saying neither proposal addressed all the required components from the RFP.  This was Miller-Valentine’s second at bat for acquiring the fairgrounds. Back in 2014 they entered into an exploratory agreement to purchase the land, but after the 9 month holding deal never executed the contract. montgomery_county_fairgrounds_coliseum

Another source tells that Premier Health and the University of Dayton will partner to buy the land.  Montgomery County Administrator Joe Tuss just met with Premier Health this afternoon.

UPDATE:  A couple hours after we broke this story, this Joint Statement Regarding the Montgomery County Fairgrounds Property was released.

On behalf of Premier Health and the University of Dayton, please see the following statement:

“As neighboring institutions, the University of Dayton and Premier Health have long collaborated on community and economic development initiatives. As neighbors to the Fairgrounds, we have an interest in how it is ultimately developed and that it complements the growth and positive momentum in this important area of our community.  We are in discussions with the City and County on how we might help support redevelopment of this community asset.”

YWCA Dayton announces 2017 Women of Influence

December 1, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

ycollage17 YWCA Dayton will honor eight women during its 2017 Women of Influence awards luncheon on March 9, 2017, noon to 1 pm, at the Dayton Convention Center. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the award; with an average attendance of 800, it is the single largest daytime nonprofit event in Dayton.

Since 1998, the YWCA Dayton WOI Awards have recognized and honored the most influential women in the Dayton area, women who have made a difference in our community through their dedication to the YWCA mission of empowering women, eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

Honorees in the Women of Influence Class of 2017 are:

  •  Amanda Wright Lane, international aviation advocate
  •  Carmen Gooden, co-founder and executive director, Linda Vista Inc.
  •  Sandy Gudorf, president, Downtown Dayton Partnership
  •  Michelle Riley, CEO, The Foodbank
  •  Judy Cook, former mayor, City of Oakwood
  •  Maj. Wendy Stiver, Dayton Police Department
  •  Stacy Thompson, vice president and regional manager for corporate responsibility banking, KeyBank

Additionally, Jeraldyne Blunden, founder of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, will be honored posthumously with the 2017 Women of Influence Lifetime Achievement Award.

Says YW CEO Shannon Isom, “YWCA Dayton, its Board of Directors and the community are excited about Women of Influence every year; this year is especially significant as it marks 20 years of recognizing influential women in our region. I continue to be encouraged by the number of nominators who insightfully recognize that the fortitude and dedication of these women change lives, industry and our community. This is the legacy of YWCA.”

Honorees were selected from a pool of more than 70 nominations by YWCA leadership and the volunteer WOI Committee, led this year by Chair Anita Moore, owner of A. Moore Consulting LLC, and Co-chair Jenny Michael, vice president of marketing and corporate communications at CareSource.

The Women of Influence luncheon serves as the largest fundraiser for YWCA Dayton. Sponsorship opportunities, program advertising and ticket information are available at www.ywcadayton.org.

Free Lunch To Celebrate Bibibop Opening on Brown Street

November 30, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

o-1Dayton’s first fast casual Korean inspired restaurant will open its doors to the public tomorrow with a free lunch for all from 11am – 2pm at Bibibop Asian Grill on Brown Street.

Not being familiar with Korean food is not a problem, as the experience is similar to that of Chipotle or Rapid Fired Pizza, where you stroll down the line picking your ingredients and end up with a meal.   While this is Dayton’s first Bibibop, there are a dozen more in Columbus and Cincinnati.  The concept has been quickly embraced and has double-digit same-store sales growth and plans for almost 20 more stores in the next timg_1126-2wo years.

You start by choosing a bowl, salad or roll (a wrap that is rolled).  I chose the purple rice, which I learned is really white rice steamed with black rice that when  steam together the black rice naturally dyes into the white rice and makes it purple and gives it a slight nutty flavor.  There is no artificially coloring or flavoring involved! And the black rice makes it healthier being filled with antioxidants, fiber, and tons of other healthy vitamins!  Then I added some black beans, leaving the sauteed potatoes and sprouts for another visit.

Then you get to pick your protein from diced grilled chicken, spicy chicken, steak or tofu or a combination of these.  I went for the spicy chicken and steak for a real meat lovers mea.

Next you add your vegetable toppings, selecting from chopped cucumber, lettuce, carrots dre13584965_1020757884668856_1053085283643466722_ossed with sesame oil, pickled daikon,  corn for a sweet crunch, cheese, chopped egg or sprouts. Have a few or do them all, which I did.

Then you can pick your sauce, a spicy sriracha, a Korean red sauce that was a little sweet, teriyaki or yum yum.  I chose to go for 1/2 spicy sriracha 1/2 yum yum, which I was later told by the marketing team is the most popular.

There are also a handful of sides you order, including miso soup, edamame, fresh cut pineapple and spicy Korean Kimchi (a fermented cabbage).

After grabbing your meal, you head to the self service beverage station, stocked with Coke products, Izze Sparkling juices and various teas.   You can also help yourself to additional sauces.

Korean Bibimbap, (mixed rice) is the inspiration for this restaurant, created by Charley Shin 3 years ago in Columbus and inspired by family recipes.   Westernizing the name and menu, Shin wanted to offer something healthy and adventurous.  He thinks the Bibibop name is fun to say and eating there makes people feel good.  With a mix of community tables and booths, the sleek white and orange decor seems young and hip.  Designed to appeal to millennials, Shin feels that they are more adventurous and like to try new things.  His desire to appeal to the younger generation was part of the Brown street site selection by the University.  According to Dori North, who handles Bibibop’s real estate,   they concept likes to cluster their eateries in a city and they are currently in negotiation for 2 more sights,  with expectation to open one by fall and another in early 2018.

Visit Bibibop Asian Grill at 1200 Brown Street, open seven days a week from 11am – 9pm.

Today is the Day of Transgender Remembrance

November 20, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

12272623_10153127702751956_2039615791_nToday is the world wide Transgender Day of Remembrance, dedicated to educating people about the trans community and the important issues trans people face worldwide, from hate crimes, to healthcare hurdles, to employment discrimination.

Created originally to honor Rita Hester, a highly visible member of the transgender community in her native Boston, MA where she worked locally on education around transgender issues. Rita was stabbed 20 times in her apartment.  Almost two decades later, police still have not found Rita’s murderer (or murderers). In 1999, one year after Rita’s murder, advocate and writer Gwendolyn Ann Smith coordinated a vigil in Rita’s honor. The vigil commemorated not only Rita, but all who were tragically lost to anti-transgender violence.

Transgender Pride Flag

Findings from the ‘Injustice at Every Turn’ report conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and the National LGBTQ Task Force showed alarming rates of violence and harassment expreienced by the more than 6,000 transgender repondents across a variety of contexts, including educational settings, at work, in interactions with police and with family members, at homeless shelters, accessing public accommodations, and in jails and prisons.

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people. The deaths of those based on anti-transgender hatred or prejudice are largely ignored. Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives.

The 2014 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and HIV-affected Hate Violence Report from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Projects shows that, of the victims murdered, 80% were people of color, 55% were transgender women, and 50% were transgender women of color. Transgender women survivors of hate violence were also more likely to experience police violence, physical violence, discrimination, harassment, sexual violence, threats, and intimidation compared to those who were not transgender women

15025531_1515366375141678_8416433258949392199_oAnti-transgender violence isn’t just directed at adults. Statistics from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) show that in schools, 16.2% of transgender students report being physically assaulted as a result of gender expression, while 32.5% experience physical harassment.

The Greater Dayton LGBT Center will host a Candlelight Ceremony today at 4pm to honor those lost to violence because they are Gender-Noncoforming.  The Center is located at 24 N. Jefferson St, Suite 200 and all are welcome. Their will be a panel discussion with members of our local Transgender community, as well as welcoming remarks from Mayor Nan Whaley.
