Making A Difference In Dayton: Debbie Fox

October 13, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

debbieBy day Debbie Fox is the  Grants and Operations Director for Levin Family Foundation.  She also has served on the board of Artemis, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Dayton, and the WSU Non Profit Leadership Alliance.  But she spends her nights and weekend drumming up support for the The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley, a program that impacts young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. Debbie’s husband is a head coach for the program as well.  We asked her to tell us a little more about her involvement with First Tee.

How did you get involved in The First Tee?

There’s one word to describe why I got involved in The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley… Passion.

Passion for our youth that would not necessarily have the opportunity to experience life skills such as our nine core values and nine healthy habits.10333244_726819434081002_3633059118915745818_o

Passion for sport.

Passion for inspiring children.

Passion for education.

Passion for being a dependable mentor that our participants can count on.

Every person involved with The First Tee has an individual reason for being a part of it–whether they love the sport, they want to be an important role model, or they want to make a difference helping to shape young lives.

The First Tee programming provides a learning environment with positive reinforcement from our coaches while focusing on values and life skills that the participants will take with them well after they leave the program. Golf is just the means to demonstrate these values and life skills. It is the vehicle to lead by example. The emphasis is on inspiring young people and making an IMPACT, and who doesn’t want to be a positive reinforcement?13938181_1082002178562724_1541003617439026757_o

If you think back about role models in your life and who inspired you, why did they impact you? How did they shape you? Not everyone necessarily has those mentors in their lives, and The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley provides that inspirational core to inspire our participants to make a difference throughout their lives–Enriching lives.

Tell us  how this organization impacts our community?

The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley is proud to partner and collaborate with many organizations in the Butler, Warren, and Montgomery county areas. Currently we are in 13 elementary schools in the Dayton Public School District thanks to the Brian Hafer Foundation with our National School Program that is impacting over 4500 students.

The First Tee Life Skills program offered 295 participants scholarships in collaboration with the City of Dayton Golf Courses and nearly 700 participants total in our Chapter for 2016.

Dennis Walters and his dog, Bucky,

On Wednesday, October 12, in partnership with TPC River’s Bend, we welcomed Dennis Walters from The Dennis Walter Show. He spent the day visiting three Kings School District Elementary Schools sharing his story of overcoming obstacles, reaching for your dreams, and never giving up with over 275 second and fourth graders.

Through partnerships such as these, as well as The First Tee Life Skills Experience, National School Program, and DRIVE, The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley is able to continue making an IMPACT on young lives.

How can folks get involved?

October 10, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

Balbigreadvoteimagelots will soon be cast not only for President, but also for the next Big Read title. Each spring, the Big Read invites Miami Valley residents to read and talk about the same book, which is chosen by popular vote.

Over the course of the summer, a selection committee of local librarians and volunteers narrowed an initial list of 48 titles down to four finalists. Votes can be cast at public libraries, academic libraries, Books & Co., or online at BigRead.org from September 12-October 23, 2016. The winning title will be announced at the end of October.

The four finalists for the 2017 Big Read are:

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters In the End by Atul Gawande
(Nonfiction) Gawande, a practicing surgeon, argues that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families of the terminally ill. Full of eye-opening research and riveting storytelling, Being Mortal asserts that medicine can comfort and enhance our experience, providing not only a good life but also a good end.

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates150709_sbr_coates-cover-jpg-crop-original-original
(Memoir) In a bold and personal literary exploration of America’s racial history, Ta-Nehisi Coates has written a series of essays to his adolescent son, exploring both personal and historical events. From his analysis of the concept of race, to the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement, Coates sums up the history of black people in the United States.

Lock In by John Scalziimages-1
(Science Fiction) Written by a Hugo Award-winning local author from Bradford and set in the not too distant future, a virus has swept the globe causing 1% of the world’s population to become “locked in” – fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. This is the background for a murder investigation that becomes something much more.

The Wright Brothers by David McCulloughthe-wright-brothers-9781476728759_hr
(Biography) Drawing on nearly 1,000 letters of family correspondence plus diaries, notebooks and scrapbooks in the Library of Congress, McCullough tells the extraordinary American story of the two Dayton brothers who changed the world.

The Dayton Metro Library launched the Big Read in 2005 and it has been growing larger ever since.

“With the recent additions of Bradford Public Library and Wright State University, the Big Read now includes 11 public library systems and three academic libraries spread across eight counties, as well as a bookstore and a nonprofit literacy organization,” said Ben Murphy, Materials Selection Librarian at the Dayton Metro Library and co-chair of the Big Read. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to get people across the Miami Valley reading and talking about the same great book.”

Visit BigRead.org to cast your vote and get more information on the next Big Read, past Big Read books and scheduled activities. Voting closes October 23, 2016.

Get A Seat At The Longest Table

October 3, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

thelongesttable Imagine a dinner table the length of the Third Street Bridge. Envision it packed with Daytonians from every pocket of the city. At this table, UpDayton and other interested parties can help serve a meal and challenge participants to re-think their assumptions about other parts of town and the people who live there. Volunteers will figure out how to bring this huge meal to life, how to inspire impactful dialogue, and how to fill the table with people who believe in a more open, connected Dayton.

“What’s better than having folks come together to break bread with strangers and talk about the future of Dayton?” says Bryan Stewart, The Longest Table Project organizer.

Stewart says he came up with the idea when a colleagu14484740_870578093072590_7791812207877964811_ne reached out to him and showed him a similar event that happened last fall in Tallahassee, Fla. Stewart talked with organizers in Florida to learn how they planned the event.

Stewart pitched the idea, based on a similar event that took place in Tallahassee last fall,  at the  UpDayton Summit, an annual conference in which attendees vote on which community-based projects will receive $1,000 and assistance from UpDayton. Stewart was one of three winners at this year’s conference in April.  Of course, $1000 doesn’t cover the cost of this project, so donations are welcome and the team will also be guest bartending tonight at Fifth Street Brewpub starting at 6pm.

A team of volunteers has been working for months to work on the logistics, the food donations, and getting a diverse group of Miami Valley residents  to the table.

Volunteer Julio Mateo decided to join the Longest Table after attending the UpDayton summit. Mate14379933_868636856600047_1864039995943412753_oo is on the dialogue committee, which develops ways for people to start conversation. For example, the table will be lined with placemats with questions on them. One question may be, “What’s your favorite part about your neighborhood? How can you make it even better?”

“We’re trying to create questions that can help people initiate conversations or that can lead people from just meeting a brand new person to working together on ways Dayton can be more forward,” says Mateo.

14322636_865872666876466_7989244798301054206_nOf course to pull this off, hundreds of volunteers will be needed, for set up, helping with parking, table hosts, and of course clean up.  Sign up to volunteer here.

If you’d like a seat at the table on Sat, Oct 15th you can register online. The meal is free, with most of it being provided by the House of Bread. It will be a very simple meal, because the conversation in the centerpiece of this event. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite dessert to share.  Due to the nature of this event those with food allergies and other dietary restrictions will need to make their own decisions about whether to attend or not, as no special meal concessions will be available.

There’s A New Bagel In Town!

October 1, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

Introducing Old World Bagels from the Ghostlight Bakehouse!

14480601_1110707252311759_7471559647830958972_o

I got an invitation from Shane Anderson to stop by and visit Ghostlight Coffee so he could tell me all about something new.  As I arrived I noticed a brand new stand on the counter, filled with bagels.  Shane and baker Mandy shared that they’d been working on bringing bagels to the coffee shop for a while and have finally found the right recipe and invested in some equipment so they provide fresh bagels each morning.

The bagels are formed & rested, then ‘proofed’ before going into the boil, a mixture of water and beer from local breweries. Don’t worry, the beer cooks off in the boil.  They then go into the oven where they get a nice crisp exterior with a soft & chewy inside.
They plan to stock 4 flavors daily and will rotate through flavors such as:
Lumberjack (Maple, Cinnamon, Smoked Sea Salt)fullsizerender
Old World Authentic (Plain)
Cinnamon & Ginger Chip
Apple Cider
Cracked Pepper & Sea Salt
Black & White Sesame
Chocolate Swirl (featuring Mesocacao Single Origin Chocolate)
Spicy! Everything! (with HouseMade Sriracha Powder in the mix!)They will also offer a seasonal Local Brew Bagel, with beer in the bagel dough itself… starting with:
OCTOBERFEST! Featuring The Dayton Beer Company …topped with pretzel salt. You will LOVE this toasted with a smear of cream cheese. The base recipe of the bagels is vegan, being dairy, egg and nut free.  But yes, they do have gluten in them. Future bagel offerings may be topped with nuts or cheese, but they will clearly indicate those ingredients.

You’ll be able to pick up a bagel for just $2. Various toppings will be available including Cream Cheese, Hummus & Hawthorn Homestead Jams at an additional charge.  If you’d like to pick up a large order to share at the office or your next group event, please call to place an order for a dozen or more by noon the day before you need them at (937) 985-2633.

You can visit Ghostlight at the corner of Wayne Ave & Clover Streets in South Park:

Mon – Thu: 7a-5:30p
Fri & Sat: 7a-7p
Sun: 8a-5:30p

10 ?’s with Chris Coherd, Executive Chef, Mudlick Tap House

September 30, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

chriscoherdChris Coherd, took over as Executive Chef at Mudlick Tap House this past  May. No stranger to kitchens around town, he worked at Truffles, Madison’s and Fresco.  Before making the move to this Germantown eatery, Coherd  spent three years as the Sous Chef under Chef Anne Kearney at Rue Dumaine.

Chef Chris believes in running a scratch kitchen, and whether that means butchering the  free range chicken he picks up from Ed Hill in Xenia or curing  his own meats, he prides himself on his  commitment to locally sourcing ingredients.

An avid outdoorsman, he loves to hunt and fish and has been spotted at Urban Krag doing some climbing as well. He also loves to spend time with his wife Elly and their 9 month old son Max.

Now that he’ s put his mark on the menu at Mudlick, he took the time time to answer our 10 ? Chef Interview.  Enjoy his answers below:

DMM: What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

CC:   I cook with so many ingredients and I love all of them. My most common are butter, onion and garlic.   And fats…every dish is rounded out with some kind of fat whether its olive oil, bacon fat, butter, etc.

DMM: What ingredient do you dread?

CC:  Bony fish…deboning fish is time consuming and can also destroy the fish and create an unappealing visual.

14225335_1152455064815312_1148696659339615027_n

pan seared red snapper served with crispy yukon potatoes and local pea shoots finished with a relish of sweet corn, shallot, zucchini, red bell pepper and a champagne vinaigrette.

DMM: What’s your favorite dish to make?

CC:  Curry chicken and rice with fried basil leaves. I make my curry from scratch with curry coconut milk, garlic, jalapeno, and onion and reduce it to concentrate the flavors then add chicken and serve it over rice topped with some fried basil leaves.

DMM: What’s your favorite pig out food?
CC:  PIZZA-Pies and Pints – The Hot Mama

DMM: What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley

CC: Taquria Mixteca – I order the same thing every time I go – chicken steak shrimp fajitas

14079678_1132530870141065_454040676701029534_n

New Zealand lamb chops with farm fresh pea shoots, sauté of white beans, sun-dried tomato, and lemon zest with a mint parsley pistou!

DMM: What’s your best advice for home chefs?

CC: Taste everything before you serve it!

DMM: If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

CC:

Brian Griffey – the first chef I ever worked for and my mentor

Phillip Cronin – Childhood friend and chef for Edward Lee in Washington DC

Aaron Allen-Former co-worker and chef de cuisine at Autumn Restaurant at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort

Nate Vance – Sous Chef at Salar

Worked with all of them, enjoyed working with them, respect their culinary skills and talent, and we all enjoy each other’s company

Black grouper pan seared on a zucchini fritter & arugula with a relish of bell peppers, local sweet corn & wilted shallot on a roasted red pepper coulis!

DMM: Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

CC:  Anne Kearney

She’s a beast in the kitchen. If you think your fast at prep, work next to her for 30 minutes and you will realize how slow you really are. And her knife cuts will look better than yours!

DMM: What do you do in the Miami Valley on your day off?

WhSandwiches from Fifth Street Deli (The Champ), Beers and Giant Jenga at Warped Wing. But in the fall, you can find me in a tree stand.

DMM: Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

CC:  When I worked this year’s Celebrity Chef James Beard dinner in Columbus, Brian the chef de cuisine was originally supposed to cook the venison loin and at the last minute decided to hand off the responsibility to me which I was extremely nervous about since these are a lot of talented chefs. The venison came out cooked perfectly followed by several compliments from the many talented chefs in attendance.

September 29, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

ls-1Cooks’Wares is closing their store at The Marketplace at Settlers’ Walk in Springboro when their lease ends this fall. Owner Mary Fricke shared, ” I have reached the point in my life when downsizing to just one store is appropriate. Still, this decision came only after much thought and careful consideration.”

In an email newsletter sent earlier this week, Fricke assured us “at Settlers’ Walk, there are no changes to classes and store hours at this time. If there are changes later, we’ll give you notice well in advance. The Cooks’Wares store in The Shops at Harper’s Point in Montgomery will be open as usual, including our full selection of kitchen wares and cooking classes.

We so appreciate the support and friendship of our Settlers’ Walk customers over the past 14 years. The relationships this store has brought us are what made this decision so difficult. Enjoy Deals Thursday For National Coffee Day!

September 28, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

national-coffee-dayThere are many legendary accounts of how coffee first came to be, but the earliest credible evidence of either coffee drinking or the knowledge of the coffee tree appears in the middle of the 15th century in the Sufi monasteries around Mokha in Yemen.  It was here coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed, much like they are prepared today. Yemeni traders brought coffee back to their homeland from Ethiopia and began to cultivate the seed.

In 1670, coffee seeds were smuggled out of the Middle East by Baba Budan, as he strapped seven coffee seeds onto his chest.  The first plants grown from these smuggled seeds were planted in Mysore.  It was then that coffee spread to Italy, to the rest of Europe, to Indonesia and the Americas.

Brazil produces more coffee in the world than any other country followed by Colombia.  More than 50 countries around the world grow coffee, providing a delicious variety for the indulgence of steamy cups of the black drink for connoisseurs to consume.

Making A Difference In Dayton With Donuts!

September 15, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

14322341_1093060194112789_2938607988023610784_nThere was an overwhelming response to the Fundraiser held at the Donut Haus Bakery in Springboro this past Saturday. The benefit was for the Ronnie Bowers family who lost their 16 year old son senselessly and tragically last week by a group of thug kids in Kettering.  Owner Mike Hemmert said people started lining up at the shop at 5:50 AM to get in to buy donuts and coffee and put extra money in the donation container.

He said they baked around the clock Friday night and had 14 working Saturday morning to keep up with th14358760_1093060267446115_5666865581449817806_ne crowds. He gives special thanks to his good friends Dave& Tracy who volunteered to wash dishes, pack orders, clean tables, whatever I asked them–they were on it.

Hemmert also shared, “one of the HS students that works for me–she was scheduled off that day and wanted to work “for free” that day–she stayed 8 hours and I added her salary to the donation–she also donated her cash tips. I have 23 incredible people on my staff now that stepped it up and never complained.  I could go on and on…there was a true spirit of giving and magic in the air!’

And on Monday morning, Kettering Fairmont Principal Tyler Alexander picked up 50 dozen donuts for his district, which he pre-ordered Saturday  so they could be part of the benefit.

With a special heartfelt THANKS to all of you Mike will be writing a check for $3,147.12 to this family to offset funeral costs and other family expenditures.

Donut Haus Hosts Fundraiser for Kettering Family Who Lost Their Son

September 8, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

10398567_964194763666000_5978069240728879199_nAll of us have heard about the senseless, tragic killing of the Kettering Fairmont 16 year old last weekend.  Ronnie Bowers was the young man that lost his life with a gun shot to his head over the weekend.

Mike Hemmert, owner of Springboro’s Donut Haus Bakery, just announced on his facebook page, a plan to help the family deal with some of the costs they’ve incurred due to this tragedy.

“The Donut Haus is a long time supporter of the Springboro School District. When I heard last night that Ryan Combs (who works at the high school)  is the stepfather of the young man that was tragically killed, I wanted to help. There is also a second connection, as Ryan’s Mom (Julie Marconi Combs) is a long time School Bus Driver for our School System as well. My daughter has been teaching for 8 years in an area School District and I know first hand the sacrifices they make,”  says Hemmert.

On Saturday, Sept. 10 from 6 AM-NOON they will donate $1.00 for every dozen donuts they sell along with 50 cents for every cup of coffee.  They expect to make a nice donation to try and help this family with the support f their  loyal customers.

16 year old Ronnie Bowers

The days ahead will be very hard for this family as they plan the funeral. A Go Fund Me campaign set up for the family  when Ronnie was on life support has already raised over $10,000.  According to his Aunt Shannon, “Ronnie has made the lives of several people possible through the donation of his organs. His heart will beat on, his eyes will still shine, and laughter will still be heard through the air in his lungs. My family’s tragedy is another family’s miracle. I wish there was a way to take away the pain.”

Voltzy Needs Our Help!

September 2, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

131926_448273155210509_1239016697_oIf you’ve ever stopped by for lunch at Voltzy’s Rootbeer Stand at 4668 Springboro Pike, by WDTN, you’ve probably heard Voltzy give you hard time!  For over 25 years he’s been serving up burgers and some amazing soups with an attitude.  Now as you get to know and love him, like many of us have, you realize he’s a great big softy under that harsh bark.

Speaking of hard times, Voltzy’s summer has not been a fun one- in June he had surgery and announced he’d be closed for about 3 weeks.  In reality he has had a couple of surgeries and he’s not been able to work all summer.

Friends of his have launched a GoFundMe page to help:

As many of you know by now, Rick (Voltzy) has been through a lot this last couple of months. Not only has he had major surgery with his toe amputation and therapy but also having to close his restaurant, which is his main source of income. This has had a huge impact on him. Even with health insurance, there are still expenses that are not covered.

Rick is too proud to ask for anything but he would give you the shirt off his back. So, I’m a

13690588_1033292816708537_5055199707009943349_n

Voltzy calls this his hyperbaric oxygen “astronaut look” therapy at Sycamore Hospital.

sking for your help with donations for his medical bills. Any contribution, big or small would be greatly appreciated.

Rick can’t wait to get to back to what he loves doing, and that’s cooking, and of course chatting with all of his customers.

Let’s help Voltzy focus on getting well and hopefully recover quicker without having to worry about all the medical bills piling up. He loves and misses all of you and is so ready to return.

Help spread the word!
Voltzy is keeping us all updated with posts on on his facebook page. This was the latest a couple of weeks ago:

“Doctors are extremely happy with my progress. I will be fitted next week with a toe prosthetic. This is a very slow healing process and we need to be sure the wound is healing properly.

14021478_1054145814623237_4253009376601000853_nBelieve me, I am dying to get back to work and doing the thing I love to do most and that is cooking! I will post an update here once I have more info on returning. I miss everyone and appreciate all the prayers and support.”

Voltzy has been cleared to drive and spend limited time on his feet- notice how he’s pictured here checking out the competition at the Hamburger Stand in Miamisburg- no doubt he’s telling them they are only busy because his place is closed.

So if you’re able, head to the GoFundMe page and drop the few bucks you would have spent on a burger at his place.  Let’s get this guy healthy and back to work.  I’m craving a burger and some of his biting humor- how about you?
