Warped Wing Brewing Co. is a craft brewery inspired by Dayton’s rich history of innovation and invention. They are committed to carrying that spirit forward in today’s craft beer scene by brewing new proprietary beer styles and our own “warped” interpretations. They also focus on creating unique seasonal and specialty beers.

They have a full-scale production brewery in the heart of downtown Dayton in the site of the old Buckeye Brass & Iron Foundry circa 1938. They brew and distribute their beers to local restaurants, bars, grocery and retailers in the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus markets.

Zombie Dogz Now Open on Brown Street

November 13, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

15032310_1441808535833851_7648682607517009699_nAfter much anticipation and several practice nights, the doors at Zombie Dogz  officially open at 1200 Brown Street today at 10am.

They’ll be serving up their gourmet hot dogs seven days a week.  Hours will be:

Monday-Thursday 10:30-11
Friday-Saturday 10:30-midnight
Sunday 10-9

With 12 dogz on the menu and 3 seasonal dogs making special appearances, they’ve even added a  gluten free bun option, diners will have plenty of choices.  Sides include Dr.Pepper baked beans, truffle macaron15016181_1194712637262713_3339948040059206830_oi and cheese and tater tots!

They’ve also partnered with Beavercreek bakery  Cake, Hope & Love to offer an exclusive line of cupcakes with three  flavors (pictured below) you won’t find anywhere else, according CH&L owner Shannon Teague. For many of us this ability to support to awesome local entrepreneurs in one building is great news!

Owners David and Lee VanArtsdalen, with 9 week old Dylan and big brother Dylan have spent the last week hosting friends, family and supporters into the restaurant so they can test the new staff, the set up, learn the registers and get ready for the crowds that will no doubt pack the place.  At one of the preview nights, I commented to them I think their biggest problem is going to be staying below the mandated  occupancy code of 66!  Lee shared that on top of having the new baby and opening the shop, they are moving to a new house this coming weekend as well.

The VanArstdalen’s posted this thank you on their facebook page today:davidlee

“Something I’d also like to mention is all of the local community we’ve pulled in to help build our location. The artists, marketing people, tech peeps, contractors, design group, realtor company ect……. are all a part of helping our restaurant come together and wouldn’t be what it is now without the help of everyone who’s rode this ride with us. We’d just like to give a special thanks to those mentioned that have really made our new location what it is now.”

We wish them all huge success!  And yes, they food truck will still continue to make appearances around town!

New Executive Director at Artemis Center

November 9, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

25f5c854-b575-4aca-84ae-95d5253a0b7dArtemis Center, a domestic violence resource agency serving the Miami Valley since 1985, has announced the selection of Jane Keiffer, MSW, LISW-S as its new Executive Director.  Jane will fill the vacancy created by Judy Strnad’s departure in July. The decision was made after an internal selection process, during which Jane served as Interim Executive Director for the organization.

“We are very pleased to announce this appointment,” reported Joanie Haverstick, MPA, and Artemis Center Board Chair. “Jane has served the agency for more than 20 years, and will bring leadership and an extensive knowledge of domestic violence to Artemis Center’s programs along with a deep sense of commitment to our mission. She has served Artemis at program and leadership levels, and has a breadth of perspective and experience.”

An experienced Social Worker, Jane has a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Kentucky and is a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision Designation (LISW-S) in the state of Ohio, with her Undergraduate Degree in Psychology from the University of Toledo. Her experience includes working as the Clinical Director with Artemis Center for the past 9 years, serving as a domestic violence expert witness, and participating on several committees in the community, advancing best practices for working with victims of domestic violence. Jane has also provided numerous trainings which include police officers, prosecutors, victim advocates, and many other professionals on intimate partner violence.

“I look forward to continuing this journey to help domestic violence survivors and their children find safety and working with community partners in this new capacity,” remarks Keiffer. “I am dedicated to Artemis Center because I see the important work our passionate and dedicated staff provide to survivors in our community and I believe we are an important resource not only to survivors but to our community as a whole.”

Artemis Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has been providing vital supportive services to victims of domestic violence and their children for over 30 years, serving more than 95,000 victims/survivors in Montgomery and surrounding Counties.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women – more than auto accidents, rape, and muggings combined. National studies found about one in four women will be a victim of domestic violence. Without Artemis Center services individuals in the community will not have access to advocate support to create personalized safety plans, navigate the court system, referrals to community services, and individual and peer support. Artemis specializes in providing services beyond the traditional housing and safety offered by domestic violence shelters. It was the experience of Artemis founders that victims fleeing domestic violence, in addition to needing a safe place, also need help understanding their rights, guidance through the often confusing and sometimes intimidating legal system.

Corner Kitchen to Serve Pre-Hauntfest Brunch

October 25, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

12191590_604152613056002_3185336539768400664_nOctober 29th is Hauntfest in the Oregon District, the annual costumed celebration that closes down  Fifth Street for the festivities.  Because of that, Corner Kitchen, located at the intersection of Fifth and Wayne Streets,  will be closed that evening, but will open up that Saturday for a Pre-Hauntfest Brunch from 11am – 3pm.

Owner Natalie Skilliter was excited to share plans for the day with DMM.  “We LOVE Halloween. The staff is dressing up on Friday, Oct. 28 and for the Brunch on the 29th–it’s a lot of fun.

croque-madame

Croque Madam -a French twist on grilled ham, cheese and egg sandwich.

Last year, the kitchen dressed up as the Village People and broke out in dance to the YMCA. We had an Elvis that serenaded tables as well. It was a hoot!”  We weren’t able to find out if a new group number is planned for this year, but we’re guessing there will be something special planned that is just as entertaining.

In traditional brunch style, the menu will be a mix of breakfast and lunch foods and according to Skilliter, “we’re still working out the details, but I know we’ll have steak & eggs, croque madam, pancakes, burgers and  mussels. Plus, we will have a Bloody Mary bar!”  Expect brunch entrees to be in the $9-$16 range.

Update:  The brunch menu is now online.

The Wait is Over- Old Scratch Pizza Opens Tuesday!

October 17, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

We’ve all been watching 14362614_1049977115071378_8172756370492783779_othe transformation of what was once an old ugly paint store on Patterson across from Grismer Tire become transformed into Old Scratch Pizza.

Stephanie Soller shared that her husband Eric drove by the building every day for years from his job at Hobart on his way home to their home in Oakwood and about a year ago they decided that it would be the home of their beer and pizza joint.  The couple, who meet in culinary school had always dreamed of opening a restaurant together.

The 6000 sq foot restaurant has a casual feel, where you’ll order at the counter, then head into the dining room, which seats about 150 at communal tables or at  one of the 20 seats at the bar.   There’s even a private room that will seat about 30.   Weather permitting the patio adds another 40 seats.14372390_1043276649074758_7402528376148367340_o

The pizza they’ll be serving is Neopolitan-style pizza – a very thin crispy crust, cooked quickly in two wood-fired pizza ovens that at 800-1000 degrees will cook a pizza in just a couple of minutes. Soller says getting used to the ovens has been a big learning experience for him and the staff. A Chicago pizza expert Gianni Gallucci of Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani (aka the Pizza Police) was brought in to assist in training them all on the style of pizza they will be producing.

Stephanie Soller

MostMetro.com was lucky enough to get an invite to one of the practice dining sessions, where we were greeted with great hospitality by Stephanie, who seemed very cool and collected, a great sign for management of the new eatery.  She gave us a quick overview of the menu and it was hard to decide where to begin.  Vegetarian {V}, Vegan{VG} and Gluten Free{GF} items were clearly marked, a welcome detail for many. The pizza’s are about 11 inches around- a big meal for one or perfect to share. We tried the meatballs- and they were quite tasty- can’t wait to go back for a meatball sandwich.

The Pizza Menu is divided into REDS:

Margherita {V}  hand-crushed tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, romano, olive oil  $10
Marinara {VG}  hand-crushed tomatoes, oregano, garlic, olive oil  $8.5

Angry Beekeeper hand-crushed tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, spicy soppressata, hot honey, olive oil $12

fullsizerenderThere’s also a build your own option, salads, sharable appetizers like the whole roasted cauliflower, meatballs, cold cuts and buratta & proscuitto.  Eric also shared that they’ll add a brunch pizza down the road.
Shawn the bartender let us know that of the 20 tap handles, 4 will be dedicated to wine and the rest will be a rotating selection of craft beers.  They also had a whole menu of house cocktails we didn’t get around to trying this trip, guess we’ll have to go back again. Evan and Le’Chele of Rue Dumaine were brought in to consult on the bar, and the cocktails, making sure the offerings are top notch.
Old Scratch Pizza officially opens Tuesday at 812 S Patterson Blvd and will be open Tuesday – Thursday 11am – 10pm, staying open an hour later on Friday and Saturday and serving on Sunday from 11am – 9pm.

Dayton Gets Perfect Score on LGBT Equality Index!

October 17, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

nan-whaleyIn an email sent today from Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley she shared that she’s “proud and excited to announce that Dayton has received a top score of 100 on the 2016 Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index!  Dayton is one of just 3 cities in Ohio and 60 nationwide to earn a perfect score.  Dayton is also just one of 37 cities to be named an All-Star City, representing a high score in a state lacking supportive state-level laws.”

The Municipal Equality Index is based upon a set of 44 criteria that fall into five broad categories:  non-discrimination laws, municipal employment policies, inclusiveness of city services, law enforcement and municipal leadership.

I am so proud of what this award represents.  Dayton is truly moving forward as an open, progressive and welcoming place.”

“Despite another year of legislative attacks on LGBTQ equality, we are not merely holding our ground; we also continue to make significant gains across the country,” said Rebecca Isaacs, Executive Director of the Eqmei-2016-cover-1600x900uality Federation Institute. “The opportunity for further progress is huge, and we are proud to partner with HRC on the Municipal Equality Index, a powerful roadmap for elected officials and community advocates who want to continue down the path to full equality.”

Since the MEI’s debut in 2012, the number of cities earning perfect scores has more than quintupled, and today at least 24 million people now live in cities that have more comprehensive, transgender-inclusive non-discrimination laws than their state. And cities that have been rated all five years of the MEI have improved their scores by about 20 points over that time.
Progress on transgender equality has been particularly noteworthy in cities across America this year, continuing a positive trend that the MEI has tracked — and encouraged — since 2012. Transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits are offered to employees of 86 municipalities this year — up from 66 in 2015 and 5 in 2012 — and the growth of cities offering those benefits to their employees outpaces the growth in the number of cities rated. The MEI’s Issue Brief on Transgender-Inclusive Health Benefits is available here.

You can see the complete Dayton report card here.

Dayton Has A New Event Space

October 15, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

dl-bldgWhen you plan on hosting your own wedding in a building you own, finishing out the event space takes on a very special importance.  For building owner Matt Dieringer, that work will be showcased today when he weds his school teacher love, Amanda.   Dierineger purchased the 160,000 square foot Davis-Linden Building in spring of 2015, which was the home of the Davis Sewing Machine Co. in the 1920’s.  In 1924 the company changed it’s name to Huffman Manufacturing Company and started to manufacture bicycles.

The building is now filled with creative tenants that include woodworkers and cabinetmakers, a screen printing and graphic design company, a manufacturer of laser dyes, a nationally recognized sculptor/musician, a television studio, an interior design firm, and more.

The event space located on the 2nd floor is over 10,00 square feet with the original wood floors which for over 100 years old, are in pretty good condition.  Large windows line both sides of the venue  letting the natural light just bathe the room.

lindendaviseventvenue

All decked out with 8 foot rounds the room should easily seat over 400 guests.  A freight elevator just inside the entry way makes load in pretty easy and the building has plenty of carts to help and there is even a lift on site to assist with decorating.

Bathroobathroomlindendavisms have been updated with double sinks and 3 stalls in the ladies room and one stall and 2 urinals in the men’s room.  Future plans call for a partition to make the room more intimate for smaller events.  Other plans call for an improved entry to the space, that will give a direct walkway  from the sizeable parking lot .

A moveable bar has been installed on one end of the room, just in front of a set of barn doors that make way for a perfect space for a buffet line for serving food.  Several crystal chandeliers have been installed to add an elegance to the space.

For more information or to reserve the space for your special event contact barlindendavisMatt Dieringer at 937.489.8635 or [email protected].  The building is at the corner of Davis & Linden, street address is 400 Linden Ave, Dayton, OH 45403.

Upcoming events in the space include:

Sat, Oct 22 at 7:30pm Dare To Defy Showcase

This theater company  will showcase they will be performing bits from their upcoming season, as well as interacting with the audience to give them a taste of what it’s like to be on stage. Tickets at the door will cost $20 for General Admission and $25 for the VIP Experience.

Nov 4 & 5th at 8pm  Sound Sculpture Concerts

Michael & Sandy Bashaw will present the first concerts in this building in over 10 years! The concerts will feature new music composed for the Sound Sculptures, as well as some favorites from past concerts, and several new Sound Sculptures. Michael & Sandy will be joined by musicians John Taylor, Erich Reith and Dick Roll. Dayton Visual Arts Center will be hosting the bar with beer & wine available. Proceeds from the bar will go to DVAC.  Admission is $20.
