Last Month to Enjoy the All Vegan Cafe 1610

May 3, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

In a video message posted online today Molly Blackshear made the announcement that Cafe 1610 will be closing down at the end of May.  Well at least for now.

The all vegan eatery owned by Molly and her mom Cathy will be open Fri-Sun all month long, offering mainly brunch options and then they will wrap up their business at their current 521 Wayne Ave location.

Chatting with Molly today, she shared that “they are so grateful that Dayton accepted their vegan offerings” and she knows they’ve found their tribe. She says they’ve proved “there is an audience for an all vegan eatery in Dayton.” Now they need to find their permanent home and she expects that to stay in the downtown area. In August of 2020 they opened at Glass Blue Oven as a temporary home, and they started with a four month lease and kept extending it a month at time.

Cathy Mong, Molly’s partner told us, “We’ve had a really good experience in the building and want to thank Chip for the opportunity! It’s now time to find our own space.”  The partnership which  started as three is now down to two and Molly shares that they’re ready to relocate, rebrand and basically start over.  So they’ll spend the summer finding the right spot, and hope to reopen by the end of August or early September.

In the meantime you’ve got every Fri – Sun in to May  stop on by and enjoy some of their amazing donuts, muffins, breakfast tacos and other brunch items.  Molly shared they’ll do some of their other menu favorite meals, while supplies last.  Please check their facebook page for hours, which she is thinking will be 11am – 5pm for the rest of the month.

The Great TRI Horse Race

May 3, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

The Therapeutic Riding Institute‘s mission is “to enhance the quality of life for children and adults that have a variety of challenges by providing accredited therapeutic equine experiences in a safe, fun and compassionate environment.”  The riding therapy program contains six learning components: mounting, warm up, lesson, exercise, games and dismounting. Riders learn basic skills by learning to ride a horse. Students benefit from physical activity, mental stimulation, extended communication opportunities and new peer relationships.  The experiences carry over into the students’ every day activities by giving them confidence to try new challenging experiences.

To help further their mission and inspire some friendly competition among local businesses, asking them to “adopt” a horse for The Great TRI Horse Race and  fundraise for their keep. You’ve got til  May 21st, 2021 at 11:59pm to help these horses cross the finish line.

Here’s the line up for the race with current standings:

Visit one of the participating business, like Warped Wing Barrel Room & Smokery in Springboro and you’ll see this horseshoe on the bar. Scan the QR code to “bet” on their horse  Chance and contribute to TRI.  Donors who contribute will receive a TRI pint glass koozie.

New Pandemic Provisions Make Marketplace Insurance More Affordable

April 19, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Due to the pandemic President Biden has opened a special enrollment period for the Healthcare Marketplace through Aug. 15 to help people take advantage of insurance provided through the Affordable Care Act.  Normally enrollment takes place in November, but this extended period was enacted to help those that lost their jobs and thus their insurance due to Covid 19. Don’t have insurance?  You can be enrolled by the beginning of next month.  If you are currently getting your insurance through the Marketplace- take the time to submit a new application. Current enrollees will be able to change to any available plan in their area without restriction to the same level of coverage as their current plan.

Speaking with HRS ERASE  navigator Ron Irvine, ” the new COVID-19 stimulus plan signed into law last month has added provisions that can save you money. He estimates the average person he has helped saves $50-$100 per month under the new regulations.

As a health care navigator, Irvine is paid by a Federal Grant from CMS/HHS  and is bound to be impartial to provide Free Enrollment assistance to help you find affordable Health Insurance that will meet your needs.  He doesn’t work for any insurance companies, thus he is just available to help you find the best plan that allows you to work with your existing doctors and make sure any medicine you do take is covered. He can also serve as a resource to help you locate a new doctor if you current doctor stops taking your plan.

Navigator’s can also be available to come in and talk with you (or zoom) if your organization or nonprofit needs education about the ACA and it’s programs.  They are certified in Medicaid and Medicare  by the state of Ohio.

Food Truck Spotlight: The Wild Banana

April 17, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Jessica Benson has  worked in the restaurant industry on and off throughout her life. She says she’s  “done everything from wash dishes, to bartend, to help manage. I’ve always had a love for eating healthy and organic food and I’ve especially always loved smoothies and smoothie bowls. I’ve also been an entrepreneur since I was 8! I was always trying to sell something I made to my neighbors.”
We asked her what inspired he to start a food truck?
“About a year or so before I came up with The Wild Banana. I started making fun, natural colored smoothie bowls and taking pics of them and putting them on social media. Several people made comments like.. “I would pay for one of those!” and “You could sell those!” I didn’t think too much about it until a trailer that already had windows in it came into my life for super cheap and I thought… I could build a food truck and sell my smoothies! I like to build things so I built most of the food trailer myself with some help from my father-in-law and my step-dad. I had no idea how much work it was actually going to be and I even thought about giving up at times but I kept thinking of the end result and eventually finished it! I kept thinking about how important it was to me to share healthy, tasty, beautiful food with people. I wanted to show everyone that healthy food can be fun and tasty! And of course it’s nice to work for myself and continue my dream of being an entrepreneur.”
Check out The Wild Banana Menu:
We asked Jessica what her best selling item was:
“Oh man! That’s a tough one. I feel like it changes but right now I would say The Brazil Bowl and The Blue Pacific Smoothie. The Brazil Bowl is a little more like the traditional Açaí bow that people have heard of and it has so much good stuff on it. You have the açaí base, then granola, chocolate, peanut butter, blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, chia seeds, and coconut! YUM! The Blue Pacific is a smoothie made with pineapple, mango, banana, blue spirulina(an algae used for color), and honey.”
Jessica wants people to know she has “a passion for making high quality, organic, healthy food that’s fun and super colorful! I want my business to be fun for everyone.  I also don’t use any single use plastic! We only use biodegradable containers to help the Earth. “
Upcoming events:
April 17  Saturday PM- A Beavercreek Neighborhood 5-7PM
2530 Trafalgar Place Xenia
April 18 Sunday- UD Earth Fest 12-4PM
Old River Park
Huffman Avenue Road, Dayton

She posts he schedule of events on Facebook and Instagram.  She also does pickup and delivery one or two days a week from her driveway. *Must order online for pickup and delivery only.

New Diner Opens in Miamisburg

April 6, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s a new breakfast joint in Miamisburg. Rye Toast opened quietly last week at 1015 S. Main Street, in the building that formerly housed Star City BBQ.  Chef Tom Tiner and his wife Connie bought the building and after years of working in corporate kitchens, they finally have their own place. He said he’d driven by it many times and when the BBQ joint closed in September of 2018 he had called the owner and chatted with him.  As the pandemic changed things, he kept thinking about it, and finally made the decision to become his own boss.

In explaining the logo, Chef Tiner shared that it pays homage to his late father, highlighting his initials R and T. His dad was a marine then served as a sheriff in Waco, Texas who loved to paint. The green behind Rye Toast represents a roller brush, while the circle around the initials is done with a brush.  The 1820 was his father’s call tag used over the radio for police business.

They’ll be serving up breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Saturday  and this past Sat I had a chance to dine with them. I ordered the 1/2 portion of biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and your choice of bacon or sausage for just 7.25. The biscuits were fluffy and buttery, the gravy was definitely home made.  Chef Tiner explained if they can make it in house, they will, with the exception of their breads, which will be supplied by Klosterman Bakery.

Chef Tiner’s background in senior living facilities and hospitals had him adhering to menu’s created by dietitian’s and corporate chefs, so the freedom to create his own menu’s is one of the best things about having his own place.  But he did add that he was able to hire one of his former cooks DeLonda, he’d worked with  her for 5 years and having an employee he knows and trusts is a huge asset.  He hopes to eventually have a second location she can manage.

The breakfast menu:

Breakfast Special #6

Classy Hen

Rye Toast Lunch Menu:

Chef Tiner expects to add a few more classics to the lunch menu over time including a hot pastramia and a Russian sandwich.  He’d also like to do some parking lot parties, growing up in Texas he says he makes a mean BBQ and he knows his way around a Carolina pig picking and could even see come clam bakes in the future.  But in the meantime, head on out to Rye Toast and tell them DaytonDining sent you!

Rye Toast

1015 S. Main Street
Miamisburg, OH 45342

(While the new signs have been ordered since January, Covid 19 has delayed them, so look for the Star City BBQ sign to identify the location)

Tues- Sat 6am – 2pm

Food Truck Spotlight: Bella Sorella Pizza Co

April 3, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Bella Sorella Pizza is owned by two sisters, Elizabeth Corrado Weizman and Gail Corrado Okafor.  Gail has recently returned to Ohio after twelve years in California’s Bay Area. There, she trained to become a professional chef and comes to you with 8 years experience.

Elizabeth, an experienced pizzaiola, built her first outdoor brick oven 8 years ago. Since then she has diligently practiced and refined her skills as a pizza maker. Her 1-acre garden is filled with only the freshest, organic vegetables that she shares with you in every bite!

We asked them how they got started.  “The business started because we built a pizza oven at our family farm and made pizzas every weekend with rave reviews.  We knew we had to make this mobile in 2013 right when the Dayton food truck scene started to happen.”  They added a 2nd mobile pizza oven and stay booked up most weekends.
Their best selling item is for sure the Big Fella, their pepperoni pizza and also The Queen, their margherita pizza. Also keep an eye out for the Greek-In-Law which is Feta, Greek olives, Feta, greek olives, red onion, roasted pepper and Spicy house made yogurt sauce or The Nana, fresh corn, pesto, slow roasted tomatoes, roasted garlic and summer squash.
The sisters want you to know they “are the true Farm to Pizza.  We grow most of the toppings for our pizzas on our family farm including the pork for sausage. The dough has only 4 natural ingredients and freshly made.  A large part of business now is private catering for weddings, graduations, and all kinds of special events.” They roll up with their van, oven, a full staff, stretch the dough, top the pizzas, and cook them right in front of your space and guests to serve hot, fresh pizza
Using only the freshest, Ohio grown and produced meats, cheeses and produce, Bella Sorella, offers you a unique culinary experience. Our hand-tossed pizzas are baked over an 800 degree wood-fired oven, offering you a mouth-watering pizza, full of fire, scents, and flavor! The menu for public events is typically a meat pizza, a 4 cheese, a vegetarian option and a seasonal pizza depending on what’s fresh and in abundance in the garden.
Where you can find them:
Fri, April 9th 5-8pm – Yellow Springs Barrel Room
Sat, April 17th -8pm – Yellow Springs Brewery
Follow them on Facebook for more events.

Oregon District Natural Hair Salon Adds New Stylist

March 30, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Local natural hair salon & boutique, Puff Apothecary’s founder and owner, Bethany Ramsey, has announced the addition of a new stylist, Asha Parson as the Salon Coordinator. Parson will join the team of three. With the addition of Parson, Puff Apothecary will double their availability to better serve the growing demand for natural hair services. Parson specializes in locs, braiding and other protective styling.

Asha Parson received her cosmetology license in 2012. “As the oldest of five, I developed a passion for doing hair when I started helping my mother with my sibling’s hair” explained Parson.

Puff Apothecary meets clients wherever they are in their natural hair journey and the owner found her lane in natural hair after doing the big chop 14 years ago. Their stylists focus on servicing and caring for natural hair by detangling, cleansing and moisturizing hair with plant-based products from Black owned businesses they wholesale and also sell in their boutique. Their stylists use techniques that include defining curls and they offer services for locs and braids.

“People come to us because we specialize in natural hair but also because we offer a special experience. We are knowledgeable, personable and prioritize having a space where people can have a self-care moment. I think now more than ever people want to connect with someone they can trust and also do something nice for themselves. We’ve been fortunate we can provide both for our clients.” said Ramsey

Puff Apothecary is a natural hair salon and boutique that was started in 2017 as a retail boutique only. Bethany Ramsey, the founder and owner, decided to add a salon and in 2019 she secured and renovated 605 E 5th St in the Oregon District. Since then, their staff has weathered the storm of Dayton’s tumultuous 2019 and now through the pandemic.

Beyond expanding their team, Puff Apothecary has also added Youth services specifically designed for families seeking help supporting their child’s natural hair. These services give children an opportunity to be in a safe space where they can grow their confidence about their natural hair and gain independence on learning to do their own hair into adolescence.

“We have families new to caring for natural hair. Families from different cultural backgrounds (adoptive or foster) who have little to no education on caring for and styling natural hair. We offer enough time that parents and caregivers can engage with us and ask questions. And we have a semi-private space that can be comfortable for young people.” says Jacqui Martin, Puff Apothecary’s Advanced Cosmetologist.

“We’re excited to be growing and that Asha has joined the Puff team. She and our entire staff enjoys and deeply cares about helping others see the beauty in their natural hair.”

For those interested in booking, first time clients should schedule a consultation at www.puffapothecary.com/book.
