Ryan Tripp, Dayton’s Donut Entrepreneur

Congrats Ryan Tripp…hard to believe that it was 5 years ago today that he purchased The Donut Haus Bakery from me after a 33 year Run.
For Ryan, it all started at age 14. I had spoken at a Career Day at Springboro Junior High. My talk was on how to properly fill out an Application, we did a mock interview with the kids and emphasized the importance of how to set yourself apart from your competition.
Ryan was hired within a week at age 14 and eventually became a Baker, Mgr. He stayed with me on a part time basis when he entered Wright State University full time and earned a Neuro Science Degree. Just out of college he was hired as a Gastroenterologist/ Diabetes Specialist from 2015- 2016. Kind of ironic right, being in the “sweets business” for many years.
After a year, he switched gears and approached me about starting his own Donut Shop. He opened Bear Creek Donuts/ Miamisburg a few short months later in April, 2016. That shop was successful as soon as he opened the doors.
In 2017, he was was interested in opening a second one. I said “where are we going now Ryan” He wanted a location in West Carrollton and I knew that market was underserved. Instead of going that way, we began talks of Ryan purchasing the D Haus and me hanging up my rolling pin. We put a Succession Plan together and on 1-16- 2018 he took over.
I could not be more proud of his accomplishments during these 5 years to bring fresh ideas, additional products, donut birthday cakes, tours and many things to keep his customers engaged. He started giving back right away to the communities he does business in.
During the past 2 years what really makes me proud of him…he became the mentor to 2 men that have opened their own donut shops.
One of his friends from HS, Clay Fillinger, a full time firefighter in Xenia approached him about his desire to start a shop there. For 6 months, Clay shadowed at the D Haus to learn the business and opened up Glazed Donut Eatery/ in Xenia in 2021.
Fast forward to October of 2021 and Ryan mentored a young man at the D Haus who also started there at age 14. Luke Lawrence then opened his own Shop in the W Carrollton/ Moraine area at age 19 that Ryan had talked about a site at one time. Hence, Hole N One Donuts was born and has also been successful and well received from these communities.

Dayton’s First Donut Fest

Planned2Give, a local event planning business that hosts fundraising events for nonprofits in the Miami Valley, has really struggled, as the pandemic has truly shut down most of their events. But they’ve decided to launch a new event, that can be successfully executed during the pandemic.
Dayton Donut Festival on Tour! is a self-guided tour of the Miami Valley’s  locally owned donut shops, which kicks off this Friday, Feb 12th and runs through Sunday, Feb 21st.   Purchase a coupon booklet for just $25 and you’ll get a coupon that can be redeemed for 3 donuts at each of the 10 stops on the tour, during each shops regular hours (a couple are even open 24 hous), which are noted in the booklet.  According to P2G co-founder Jeff Jackson, “it feels good to create an event that will draw traffic to these small independent shops at a time when business is slower due to the pandemic.”

Ticket sales benefit Miami Valley Meals, who serve those who are affected by food insecurity, by providing bulk nutritious chef-prepared meals to organizations that feed the hungry. In March of 2020 Miami Valley Meals began work to support a project addressing pandemic needs. Co-founded by Chef Matt DeAngulo, Bill Evans and Amanda DeLotelle, the mission was to employ pandemic furloughed culinary professionals to quickly and efficiently bulk prepare frozen meals from recovered food for distribution through organizations that feed the hungry.  By “serving those who serve the hungry,” we hope to support efforts of existing operations through food, freeing up their resources to focus on their missions and outreach.  This community organization is making such a huge difference in our community, currently serving over 5000 meals each week. 
 

 

Beer + Donuts Tasting Event

Pairing two of the best things ever made by man, Star City Brewing Company is partnering with  Bear Creek Donuts for Beer + Donuts: A Miamisburg Pairing on Saturday, January 20 from 1-4pm.

“Being from Miamisburg and occupying the old Peerless Mill, where we are, has always been central to who we are as a business,” said Justin Kohnen, owner of Star City Brewing Company. “There are so many great things going on in downtown Miamisburg too. We’ve been throwing around the idea of doing an event with Ryan Tripp from Bear Creek Donuts for a while now and are excited to see it come together for Beer + Donuts.”

Working closely with Bear Creek Donuts, the suggested pairings for the event include the Mound’s RTG Stout with two chocolate/coconut donut holes, the Great Miami Gose with two sea salt inspired donut holes, the Sweet Cider with a mini apple fritter, and the Hip-Hop-O-Potamus Session IPA with two citrus based donut holes.

“After you’ve finished the pairings, Bear Creek has the literal icing on top for us,” said Kohnen. “Ryan worked with our head brewer, Chad Klehamer and created an exclusive donut just for this event using one of our beers. We’re keeping it a surprise for the event, but you won’t be disappointed.”

For those interested, Beer + Donuts: A Miamisburg Pairing will take place at Star City Brewing on January 20 from 1-4pm. Tickets are $15 at the brewery or online.
