Founder Announces Final Summer Tour and Future Plans for Company

The best entertainment value in Dayton is back for a final round! Free Shakespeare! announces their farewell tour of As You Like It, directed by Travis J. Cook, performing in six outdoor venues across the Miami Valley. Running Thursday-Sundays at 7pm from July 18-August 11, the play features a cast of area professionals, students, and community members ages 16-80 and original music from Charlie Tipton. Tackling themes of community, independence, and homecoming, As You Like It promises to be a fitting goodbye for what has become a popular summer highlight for audiences across the region.

Why goodbye?

Free Shakespeare! Founder, Chris Shea, is moving back to Seattle after a four year stint in Dayton. Shea will be joining Theatre22, Seattle’s newest professional theatre company. This fall, Shea will join the cast of Lanford Wilson’s Fifth of July; the title of the play holds special significance for Shea as it is his father Richard’s birthday. It was his father’s declining health that brought him home four years ago; Richard passed away in December of 2010. After his father’s death, Shea launched “Shakespeare for Life,” an annual week-long marathon reading of the Shakespeare canon to benefit cancer patients at Grandview Hospital. In May 2013, Shakespeare for Life raised approximately $5000.  In four years, Free Shakespeare! has donated thousands of dollars to area non-profits including the Grandview Foundation, Dayton Visual Arts Center, Involvement Advocacy, and the American Cancer Society.

Shea will be bringing the moniker of Free Shakespeare! with him on his move to Seattle; he plans to refine the work of the company and 314188_485975264746611_915305523_nsteer it towards less traditional modes of presentation.  As to what that exactly means, Shea could only manage to quote Iago, “’Tis here, but yet confused….’ I’ll figure that out once I get there, like most other things in my life.”

As exciting of an opportunity the move is, Shea will be missed in the Dayton community. Over the past four years, he’s worked with many arts organizations including Muse Machine, the Human Race Theatre Company, Stivers School for the Arts, Zoot Theatre Co., Cityfolk, WYSO, and Rhythm in Shoes.  As the Producing Artistic Director for Free Shakespeare! he has presented four summer tours, instituted a monthly Shakespeare reading series, welcomed three area premieres, and hosted two charitable readings of the complete works of Shakespeare.

Jean Howat Berry of Cityfolk has worked with Shea closely over the past four years. She says, “It has been my pleasure to work with Chris through education and outreach with Cityfolk and as a participant in one of the many wonderful Free Shakespeare activities, Shakespeare for Life. Chris has a remarkable energy: contagious, affirming and restorative. In other words, he shares his charisma, he affirms those he shares with and in the process offers a little healing for what ails you. For real. On stage, he is strong and engaging. His sensitivity, in role or out, is genuine. I will miss having him close in proximity, but will always know him close in my heart!”

Although this chapter of his life is bringing him back out West, Shea proudly discusses his time in Dayton and doesn’t discount the possibility of a future return. “Dayton is a very generous town and breeds generous people.  The spirit of giving is integral to what it means to be from Dayton.  My roots in this city have served me well, and I intend to continue to be an ambassador for Dayton as I move forward.  In fact, some of my Seattle friends got quite tired of me talking about Dayton the last time I lived out there.  What do they say, ‘you can take the kid out of Dayton….’?”

Catch the final Free Shakespeare tour of As you Like It this summer. The story follows cousins Rosalind and Celia on their quest for independence. Along the way, they learn about friendship, community, love and forgiveness. True to the name Free Shakespeare!, there is no cost to attend although donations are gladly accepted post-show. Bring a blanket, chair and a picnic as you enjoy Shakespeare under the stars. All performances begin at 7PM; 90 minutes (no intermission).

Hello again, one and all. I can’t believe that this edition will bring us right up to the edge of Christmas and, ergo, nearly to the dawn of 2013. Things do tend to slow down a bit as we coast into the Holiday Season, most shows are done with their runs before Christmas and new ones don’t really start up again until we get into January. But there are still several offerings out here for you to sample. For starts!

The Skinny:X*ACT bills this production as a “Holiday family show,” and indeed this story is one that will please the youngest among us. Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, it follows the 12 daughters of a king who are locked in their bedroom each night, and yet appear each morning with shoes worn out from dancing.

The Skinny: Adapted from the Charles Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol,” this musical closely follows the classic story with the miserly Ebenezer undergoing a profound experience of redemption over the course of a Christmas Eve night, after being visited by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley and the Spirits of Christmas past, present and future.

ON STAGE DAYTON REVIEW: Oliver! (Human Race Theatre Company) – A Dynamic Dickensian Delight

Lionel Bart’s perennial “Oliver!,” his immensely tuneful 1960 adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel “Oliver Twist,” has been thrillingly reborn as a dynamic, ensemble-driven triumph at the Human Race Theatre Company.

Astutely conceived with inspired direction by Alan Souza, previously associated with the Human Race productions of “Was” and “Ears on a Beatle,” “Oliver!” doesn’t begin in the traditional confines of a workhouse with a throng of hungry orphans. In Souza’s innovative landscape, the Dickensian London setting is Christmas Eve 1838 in a modest British pub, handsomely designed by David A Centers. The “Food, Glorious Food” is still praised, but the song primarily belongs to an assortment of ordinary, tough, working class men who know the tavern and each other very well, particularly the curiously combative, foreshadowing relationship between the bartender and his significant other whose child he derides. Souza doesn’t reveal their identities, which may be perturbing or perplexing to some, but these individuals are undeniably unified as their rough and tumble existence finds welcomed relief and unexpected similarities in an impromptu decision to interpret this musical rendering of “Oliver Twist,” originally published in monthly installments in “Bentley’s Miscellany” periodical beginning in 1837.

As the bouncy title song kicks into gear, this rowdy bunch, appropriately with periodical in hand, seamlessly transition from the tavern backdrop into the familiar framework of the tale, full of the engaging, iconic characters Dickens meticulously constructed to mirror the corrupt, hypocritical, impoverished and menacing society he knew so well. Thanks to Souza’s incredibly versatile 10-member cast, Spencer Liff’s phenomenal choreography, Helen Gregory’s first-rate musical direction, and John Rensel’s excellently subtle lighting design, the two worlds smoothly coalesce without overt confusion. Fortunately, Souza’s fresh, communal approach doesn’t produce a dull moment and is consistently arresting. Even the altered if abrupt conclusion, authentically correlating with “Oliver Twist” remaining unfinished in “Bentley’s Miscellany” until 1839, packs a dark, dramatic punch. It’s extremely exciting and rare to see a director reinterpret a tried and true product with intimate boldness. In fact, Souza’s vision recalls John Doyle’s scaled-down, ensemble-centric 2005 Tony-winning revival of “Sweeney Todd,” which also lived uniquely outside the box within an intriguing milieu. And for pure ingenuity, Souza, Liff and Gregory’s kinship recalls Roger Rees and Alex Timbers’ equally creative handling of this year’s Tony-nominated play-with-music “Peter and the Starcatcher.”

Liff, a Broadway standout who received an Emmy nomination four months ago for his splendid routines on last season’s edition of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” absolutely pulls out the stops using nearly every inch of the Loft Theatre stage for a dazzling array of breathtaking, energetic, applause-inducing sequences reflecting his trademark athletic artistry. In addition to his fantastic use of set pieces and props adhering to the tavern setting, I was particularly in awe of the jubilant atmospherics of the show-stopping “Consider Yourself,” the fast-paced cleverness permeating “You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two,” the humorously posh sensibilities within “I’d Do Anything,” the amusing nod to “Les Miserables” in “Be Back Soon,” the rambunctious kicks, leaps and twirls of “Oom-Pah-Pah,” and the sliding, gliding, gleeful exuberance of “Who Will Buy?” The spirited ensemble is vigorously immersed in every mesmerizing routine to the utmost, undergoing the epitome of a theatrical workout. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gatorade is stored backstage for this hard-working crew.

Attractively costumed in period attire by Molly Walz, Souza’s marvelously cohesive cast portrays multiple roles with expertly detailed aplomb. In the titular role, Blaise Bouschard is an appealingly innocent, humble presence offering pleasant vocals, especially in his sincerely plaintive rendition of “Where is Love?” Gary Troy’s humorously slick, shrewd interpretation of Fagin, the scoundrel who craves his treasure and independence with equal passion, culminates with a delectably superb “Reviewing the Situation.” As the saucy, abused Nancy, Sara Sheperd, a terrific vocalist and a lively source of vigor and warmth, particularly supplies a compelling rendition of the lovely torch ballad “As Long as He Needs Me.” Nicholas Belton, another fine singer, is a perfectly brooding Bill Sikes. Joseph Medeiros, a skillfully sharp dancer with numerous Broadway credits, is a charming, crafty and witty Artful Dodger. He also scores big laughs as Widow Corney in “I Shall Scream” opposite the fittingly authoritative and droll Scott Stoney as Mr. Bumble. Adam Lendermon delights as creepy undertaker Mr. Sowerberry and is strikingly believable as the gentle, soft-spoken Mrs. Bedwin. Chris Shea is a great fit as the kindly Mr. Brownlow and the hopelessly agitated Mrs. Sowerberry. Ian DeVine, a Wright State University senior musical theater major who continues to amaze, winningly startles and intimidates as the cruel Noah Claypole. As Bet, the aforementioned, multitasking Gregory amiably partners with Sheperd for back-to-back knockouts “It’s a Fine Life” and “I’d Do Anything.”

Brilliantly enhancing the art of storytelling through concept, song and dance, Souza, Liff and Gregory have overseen a must-see showcase, coinciding with the bicentennial of Dickens’ birth, which could have a life beyond Dayton in regional theaters or beyond. After all, Broadway hasn’t revived “Oliver!” since 1984, and considering the current success of the Roundabout Theatre Company’s terrific production of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” there could be a timely Dickens resurgence brewing which this version could promisingly accentuate.

Purists may scoff, but the Human Race supplies a joyously refreshing experience expanding the possibilities of what musical theater can be.

“Oliver!” continues through Dec. 22 in the Loft Theatre of the Human Race Theatre Company, 126 N. Main St., Dayton. Act One: 60 minutes; Act Two: 40 minutes. Performances are Tuesday at 7 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. There is also a 2 p.m. performance on Dec. 22. The Dec. 11 performance is sold out. A post-show discussion will follow the Dec. 9 performance. Jonah Sorscher is also featured in the cast as the Oliver understudy. Tickets are $17.50-$45. Exploring Where the Sins Lie – Spring Awakening

Encore Theater Company impressively produces a compelling, passionate production of composer Duncan Sheik and lyricist-librettist Steven Sater’s 2007 Tony Award-winning pop/rock musical “Spring Awakening,” a riveting coming-of-age account based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial, banned 1891 play of the same name.

Presented at Courtyard Crossing with a refreshing intimacy rivaling its off-Broadway debut, “Spring Awakening” uniquely transpires in 19th century Germany with a contemporary spin, primarily in its wonderfully melodic score. The thought-provoking tale, firmly led by Ray Zupp and Lisa Glover as doomed lovers Melchior Gabor and Wendla Bergman, skillfully addresses the joy and repercussions of teen angst and budding sexuality among such bold elements as abortion, incest and masturbation. As Melchior and Wendla’s heated desires and yearning for connection dramatically swell under the repressive weight of hypocritical authority, Zupp and Glover provide emotionally honest portrayals rooted in innocence and burgeoning hope. Zupp, defiant and headstrong, effortlessly exudes Melchoir’s magnetism and influence among his close-knit buddies and female admirers. He also brings a sincere earnestness to his solos (the moving “Left Behind” is a definite heartbreaker) and masters Melchoir’s self-assured persona as a man-child who truly has so much to learn. The radiant, vocally enticing Glover delivers a breakthrough performance that endearingly reveals Wendla’s delicacy, sheltered existence and inquisitiveness. Sharply indicating the confusion and pain of a guileless young girl who “ruined all the true plans,” Glover notably supplies a seductively mood-setting rendition of “Mama Who Bore Me” and a beautifully lyric-driven “Whispering” effectively capturing Sater’s pensive poetry. Zupp and Glover’s unshakable chemistry, a significant factor of the show’s success under the crisp, emotive direction of JJ Parkey, particularly soars in “The Word of Your Body,” a warmly expressive blend of intertwining hands and romantic gazes choreographed by Nikki Wetter.

Wedekind’s dark, impactful world – sparsely designed by Zupp, Parkey and Shane Anderson, attractively costumed by Molly Walz with period-provincial and modern flourishes, and evocatively lit by Nicholas Crumbley – equally thrives among an assortment of appealing featured players. Drew Bowen is a jittery source of agitation and agony as Moritz, an underachiever tragically damaged by his father’s scorn and his own tortured insecurity. As Ilse, Elizabeth Wellman renders a gently wistful “Blue Wind” and ushers in the gorgeous “Song of Purple Summer” finale. She is also terrifically joined by Emily Sexton (Martha) for the dynamically pulsating “Dark I Know Well.” Despite a few instances of vocal overpowering due to off-kilter sound problems, Taylor Benjamin (Thea), Bradley Farmer (Anna), Josh Hughes (Hanschen), Zach King (Georg), Sean Metcalf (Ernst) and T.C. Schreier (Otto) compatibly join Bowen, Wellman and Sexton to form an authentic, committed ensemble, particularly driving the sensuality within “Touch Me.” Chris Shea and Natalie Houliston absolutely shine in multiple adult roles that rank among their finest work. Shea particularly embodies Herr Sonnenstich and Herr Stiefel with intimidating gusto but is also great in the smallest of moments such as his sinister appearance as Ilse’s father. The comedic Houliston is a hoot as Fraulein Knuppeldick yet thrillingly evolves late in Act 2 to portray Frau Bergman and Frau Gabor with formidable intensity. Gavi Beloff, Nick Boyer, Trevor Coran and Nicole Dine are effectively planted within the audience as featured singers. Musical director John Faas guides a sufficient orchestra.
Thanks to a winning cast and a clear artistic vision, “Spring Awakening” provides the perfect opportunity to discover why Encore remains a daring, risk-tasking musical theater force in our community.

Main St., in downtown Dayton. The event will start with a reading of Julius Caesar, with the goal of reading all 37 plays, 154 sonnets and five poems credited to William Shakespeare. While the readings will be organized into four-hour segments with some assigned readers, the public is invited to stop by anytime and read ― or just listen. Participants are asked to gather at least $25 in pledges to benefit a both Optum Nurses for a Cure and Free Shakespeare! Free Shakespeare!

In many communities around the world, a treasured summer activity is outdoor performances and festivals devoted to classic Shakespeare plays (Shakespeare Fellowship List).  Two of the most well-known in Ohio are  Cincinnati Shakespeare Co. which tours two shows in fourteen different parks and Actor’s Theatre which is celebrating it’s 30th season presenting shows in Schiller Park in Columbus’ German Village.  Suddenly in the past few years there is much interest in this terrific tradition right here in the Miami Valley, ranging from a small neighborhood troupe near downtown (Historic South Park – currently rehearsing for their 4th presentation) and the touring company known as Free Shakespeare! the brainchild of director Chris Shea.

Shea, a graduate of Kettering-Fairmont High School, spent time studying acting in the Pacific Northwest.  Inspired by the GreenStage Theatre Company’s offering of free outdoor Shakespeare, he decided to bring the concept to the Miami Valley in 2010 in the form of Free Shakespeare!  The troupe is described as a traveling community of artists with the goal of creating an event where people can rediscover the power and beauty of language and art.  Shea wanted to take the performances to multiple venues throughout the region over a series of summer weekends – and free to audiences.

Shea launched his vision for a theatre company in 2010 with Hamlet, which was received enthusiastically during it’s tour of four venues in Dayton and Yellow Springs.  2011 brings a new production, this time the ever-popular A Midsummer Night’s Dream. After opening last weekend at Antioch Amphitheatre in Yellow Springs, Shea and his team of 14 actors will continue to bring the bard’s best-loved comedy to Dayton stages over the next several weekends.  They can be seen at the Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark (July 29-31), Newcom Founders Park in the Oregon District (August 5-7), The University of Dayton’s ArtStreet (August 12-14).   All performances are outdoors and weather permitting and begin at 7PM.  Admission is free with donations accepted after the performance to pay the actors.

The cast of A Midsummer Nights Dream includes Allison Husko (Titania), Chris Shea (Oberon), Will Hutcheson (Demetrius), Travis Cook (Lysander), Amy Brooks (Hermia), Megan Cooler (Helena), Kes-lina Luoma (Puck), Jason Antonick (Theseus), Lauren S. Deaton (Hippolyta), Zach Schute (Nick Bottom), Juliet Howard-Welch (Peter Quince & Peaselblossom), David Harewood (Francis Flute & Cobweb), Philip Titlebaum (Snug & Mustardseed), and, after a 48 year absence from the stage, Bill Styles as Egeus.

The group has recently partnered with Involvement Advocacy, an umbrella organization which fosters community initiatives. Involvement Advocacy’s partnerships include, among others, the Blue Sky Project and the Dayton Arts Project. Involvement Advocacy will act as Free Shakespeare’s! fiscal agent, allowing supporters of Free Shakespeare! to make tax deductible donations to the theatre company.
