The Big Ragu Releases the AMBUCS Chili Cook-off Votes!

November 21, 2012 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Cold beer and hot chili is a recipe for a Food Adventure.   Last Friday night, a large crowd enjoyed all the chili, adult beverages and gambling action they wanted at the 26th Annual AMBUCS Chili Cookoff and Casino night at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.  All the proceeds went to benefit Dayton AMBUCS, a charity service organization that is creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities.  The Big Ragu and the Food Adventures Crew was lucky enough to be asked to be “Special Judge” for the event.   We had a blast, hung out with Dayton Mayor Gary Leitzel, and ate some terrific chili.

First off, we tried each and every chili offered.  We loved the traditional chili from Flannigans, Atrium Grille, Buckin Donkey Grille, Miami Valley Golf Club, Jimmie’s Ladder 11, Elsa’s and Slyder’s.  Our taste buds enjoyed unique meat twists on chili from Smokin BBQ, Vinny’s Bar & Grill, Christopher’s, and Longhorn Steakhouse .  Things heated up with the spicy chili from Scratch Catering and Harrigans Tavern.  Unique tasting chili from The Tropics and Cafe Mexico were nice surprises, too.   There were even great entries from individual cooks like “Deer Slayer” and “Chef Daddy’s Firehouse Chili!”

We loved and finished them all, from white bean chili, to every piece of venison, and every jalapeno.  But, we had to pick our favorites, and here were our choices:

Food Adventure’s Top 3:
1) Deer Slayer
2) Jimmie’s Ladder 11
3) Smokin’ BBQ

After trying all of the chili we ate some hot dogs then tried our luck at Bingo, Blackjack and Dice games.  Most importantly, we donated to a great organization, AMBUCS.  It was great to see local people helping a charity that reaches out to all sorts of people with physical disabilities.  We were honored to be a part of this special event and this was a Food Adventure that will always remain close to our heart.  See you next year !

If you were not there, but want to help out a great cause, visit ambucs.com, and see how you can get involved.

Christopher’s New Additions…Uncorked!

December 7, 2011 By Brian Petro Leave a Comment

Christopher's, a little something for everyone

Christopher’s Restaurant is one of the better known independent restaurants in Dayton. Excellent vegetarian and vegan fare, unique and innovative dishes, and some of the best French fries in town. Each Thursday they do a theme, and they have daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner specials that last through the month. These are all things that many of you may be familiar with, especially if you follow them on Facebook, where they frequently list all of their specials.

Something interesting they did not list anywhere, and I had the pleasure of discovering; they now serve wine and beer. According to my server, these new additions just started on Monday. Their selections may not be overflowing, but they are definitely interesting. They have a selection of four red (Noble Vines 667 Pinot Noir, Noble Vines 181 Merlot, Menage a Trois Red Blend, and The Show Cabernet Suvignon) and four whites (Beringer White Zinfandel, Blüfeld Riesling, Fog Head Sauvignon Blanc, and Noble Vines 446 Chardonnay). All of the wines were offered by the glass of by the bottle. While looking around the web, all of these wines had very good reviews. The Show, which was sampled, was big and bold as advertised, with a creamy vanilla and oak finish after a tart cherry bite.

Their beer selection is just as varied. If you are looking forward to having a Bud Light or Miller Lite there, you will be disappointed. You are going to have to settle for Yuengling. They even have the Yuengling Black and Tan. There are a few selections from Samuel Smith (a lager, an ale, and a raspberry ale), always a purveyor of high quality organic beer. Rogue Brewery also makes an appearance with their Dead Guy Ale and American Amber Ale, as does Victory Brewing Company’s Golden Monkey and Hop Devil IPA, and Young’s Double Chocolate Stout. They are even kind enough to list the ABV next to the beer, so when the Victory Golden Monkey’s 9.5% ABV comes knocking, you won’t be too surprised. There is a nice selection of beers for all palates at the table.

Christopher’s list of beers and wines is a reflection of their menu in general. They offer a little something for everyone, and of a better quality than most places. It will be interesting to see the evolution of their new menu, if they will start paring it with the specials or other dishes they serve, will any of it end up IN the dishes they serve, and how it could expand as people start to get accustomed to it and make requests. Next time you go in, make sure you take a look, or more importantly a sip, off of their newest menu.

Give Tasteful Local Gifts

December 18, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby 1 Comment

This holiday season buying a restaurant gift card for someone else can mean a little something extra for you.  As gift cards become increasingly popular among consumers, restaurant  are doing what they can to make sure it is theirs you are buying. The standard seems to be a $5 certificate for each $25 spent in gift certificates.  The “bonus” gift cards are often only good for a limited amount of time, most encouraging you to return in January, the slowest dining out month for most restaurant.  Here’s a round up of deals being offered by local eating establishments:

Amber Rose -Buy $25 – get $5

Barleycorn’s – Buy $100 – get $20

The Barnsider – Buy $30 – get $10 or Buy $75 – get $25

The Caroline– Buy $100 – get $25 free

Christopher’s – Buy $25 – get $5

Coco’s Bistro – Buy $100, get $20

Dublin Pub – Buy $50, get $10

Figlio – Buy $100, Get $25

Hawthorn Grill – Buy $50, get$ 10

Milano’s – Buy $25, get $5

Sweeney’s Seafood – Buy $100, get $20

As you know, I prefer to promote locally owned businesses, but many of you may need to know about national chains for gift giving purposes, so here’s a link that will give you a listing of  those: click here. One of the best deals out there is by BD Mongolian Grill,  they have the standard buy $25, get $5 deal, but if you spend $50 you’ll get $10 in gift certificates and a free 2011 BD’s calendar which offers $10 in dining deals each month, a $120 value.  It’s a great deal if you like creating your own stir fry meals.

And if you know of a deal not listed, please add it to the comments below!  Thanks and happy dining!
