Hawthorn Grill

Opening Day for Sweet Prince Deli & Treat Co.

May 4, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef Candace Rinke sent us a note to remind us that today was the first day of her new business.  Named after her affectionate name for her son, the Sweet Prince Deli & Treat Co. is closer to what her original business plan was over seven years ago when she was entering the business.     Though the signage outside still says Hawthorn Grill (she told me her new signs should be arriving today) we stopped by to check it out.  Let’s just say this is a work in progress.  Chef also shared she’ll be adding some sofa’s and soft seating for guests to feel comfortable in.

It’s a little more casual than Hawthorn Grill was and they’ll be serving up breakfast and lunch, seven days a week from 7am – 4pm.  Staff were busily training to make cappuccino and latte’s and there’s a new pastry case that’s the first thing you see upon arrival.  Bagels (baked fresh from Rahn’s Artisan Breads) were available on top of the case and homemade dutch apple pie, and maple bourbon pecan pies, as well as  blueberry crumb muffins and orange cranberry scones.

The sandwich menu had about 5 dozen offerings, ranging from about $7 – $13, as well as mushroom, tomato soup and white bean chicken chili.  Eight salads from an Albuquerque Cobb to a simple tossed salad are available as well as homemade cookies and cakes.

Starting tomorrow, they’ll be filling growlers for $5 to purge their current inventory of draft beer.  Choose from Rhinegeist Truth, Stella, Yeungling, Sam Adams Hospcape or DB Batty Wompus.

She also share she has some great wines on the  soon to be defunct Wine List! Chef invites you to stop by to purchase some clearance bottles – while supplies last!

Candace also shared menus for catering are coming, so stay tuned.

Hawthorn Grill Served Its Last Meal Today

April 16, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef Candace Rinke, owner of The Hawthorne Grill alerted us today that after almost seven years in business she would be making some major changes.  As of this evening they are on a hiatus, which she says she”ll use to “renew, refresh and reinvent.”   She goes on to share that her dream “has always been to operate a NY style deli featuring the best-ever sandwiches and all of the amazing desserts we’ve become know for during our time here.”
On Thursday, May 4th they will be hosting the Grand Opening of Sweet Prince Deli & Treat Co.  As Rinke describes it, ” we are going to be your one-stop shop for coffee, espresso, cappuccino, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast pastries, lunch, sweet treats and carry-out of all of our most popular Hawthorn Grill items- including mushroom soup, house salads, white bean chicken chili, lemon-dill potato salad, chocolate chip cookies and bread pudding.”

They will also have cakes by the slice as well as to go and will continue to do catering.  You’ll be able to call them for ribs by the slab, fried chicken, BBQ pork, sandwich platters and special occasion cakes.  The eatery will be open Monday-Sunday 8am – 4pm and Chef told us her new motto is “Same great taste, just a new face!”

Fleurs Et Vin: A Great Success at Carrillon Park

May 31, 2013 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Each Guest Received Souvenir Glasses

Did you miss it?  Endless wine tasting and all the food samplings you wanted were featured at the 2013 Fleurs et Vin Festival held at Carillon Park on May 19th.  The Big Ragu was on hand with Dayton Most Metro’s staff, greeting the massive crowds and sample the various offerings.  It was a Food Adventure paradise in the heart of Dayton, and a must eat on our list of events.

If you were not able to make it to this annual benefit for the AIDS Resource Center Ohio, then check out our recap, below.

Here’s the Skinny:

— FLEURS ET VIN is Dayton’s Premier Wine and Gourmet Food Festival, typically held each year on a Sunday in May from 1-4pm under the tents at Carrillon Historical Park.  It is an all-you-want tasting event with a loyal following.

— ALL of the food and wine was donated by locally owned restaurants, allowing 100% of the proceeds to benefit AIDS Resource Center of Dayton.  A Food Adventure with a cause

— Admission price allowed you access to over 400 wines from around the world and taste menu samples from 20 local restaurants, along with a Belgian Beer Garden area !

— Live and Silent Auction areas allowed even more funds to be raised for this worthy cause that focuses of prevention and education about AIDS, along with service programs that help those in need with HIV/AIDS.

— Live music filled the air and added to the warm ambiance.

With so many good wines and so much good food, below are our picks for the best of the best from this spectacular event!

Crab Rangoon from Thai 9.  Our Favorite Rangoon in Dayton.

OUR FAVORITES  (THE FOOD):

Thai 9’s Crab Rangoon and Chicken with Rice:  In our opinion, the best crab rangoon in the Dayton area were these incredible samples from Thai9.  Stuffed full and deep, and served with a sweet side of Thai sauce, we found ourselves returning to this line often.  The Thai chicken dish was also incredible at this station.  It was a Thai pepper chicken, served in a brown, curry house sauce over a bed of white rice.  We told them we loved it, but our mouths were so full that they couldn’t understand us.

The Dock’s Crab Cakes:  Slowly seared on their portable flat top grill, these were flavorful, hand-packed circles of love.  The sauce that topped the crab cakes was the secret ingredient that kept us coming back for more.  The staff of The Dock probably wanted to file a restraining order against us for hanging out by their grill as much as we did.  We could not resist seconds of these scrumptious bites of crab heaven.

Hawthorn Grill’s  Sorbet and Strawberry ShortCake: All of the desserts at Hawthorn Grill are homemade by Chef Candace and her staff.   Her sorbet was a perfect, refreshing break during this hot event.  The bite size piece of cake, topped with a strawberry sauce also hit the spot.

Scratch Catering’s Beef Brisket and Carmelized Onion Bruschetta:  When doesn’t Chef Matt Hayden please the hungry crowds?  This delicious, slow-cooked sampling was just as pleasing to the eye, as it was to our taste buds.  The hits from Scratch Catering just keep on coming ….

OUR FAVORITES (THE WINES):

Canella Blood Orange Mimosa:  Talk about refreshing!   This tasty, bottled mimosa was the perfect drink, on this hot day.  The server at this booth had to be tired of us by the end of the event.   Probably our favorite offering from the Vintage Wine Distributor.  This Italian wine cocktail is made from grape wine and the juice and pulp of blood oranges from Sicily.

Heron Chardonnay:  A crisp, white wine made from 22 year old grape vines.  The winery is a female owned, family vineyard run by Laely Heron.   One of the few American women who made wine in France, Heron’s products are also produced in California.

Spreitzer Riesling 101:  This German Riesling comes from a winery owned by two brothers who have been honing their craft since 1997.  It was a cold, refreshing sip of sparkling goodness in the warm weather.

The Belgian Beer Garden: Although this was a wine festival, Heidelberg Distributing distracted us with some great beer selections.  Food Adventures enjoyed a couple of  Stella Artois beers in a souvenir pint.  The Big Ragu went for some Hoegaarden beer and an Ommegang Witte Beer.

All in all, this is Dayton’s “Wine me and dine me” Festival.  We loved being a part of a wonderful event, that supported a locally based AIDS charity.  Good local food and world class wines, what more could one ask for?   So let us end this Food Adventure, by raising our glass with a toast.. “Whether you love Merlot or Chardonnay, here’s to seeing you at Fleurs et Vin, next May!!”

One of the best deals out there is by BD Mongolian Grill,  they have the standard buy $25, get $5 deal, but if you spend $50 you’ll get $10 in gift certificates and a free 2011 BD’s calendar which offers $10 in dining deals each month, a $120 value.  It’s a great deal if you like creating your own stir fry meals.

Tis The Season To Dine with Santa

December 2, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

If your children cannot stop talking about Santa Claus, you are not alone.  That’s why restaurants all over town have put together some special opportunities  to allow your kids to meet one of Santa’s helpers.

But here’s a tip for you.  Don’t spring Santa on them. Let your child know they are going to meet a very special visitor. Ask them what they think Santa will wear and talk about how he has a big beard.  Sometimes children will feel more secure of they have siblings or friends accompanying them, however you are the best gauge of your child’s needs.  And be sure and have fresh batteries in the camera!

Here’s a round up of events:

Sat, Dec 4 & 11, 9am
Rusty Bucket

Includes breakfast, special holiday gits, and the opportunity to meet Santa and his holiday friends.  $5 each, advance tickets required- seating will sell out..

Sat, Dec 4, 9am
Pollen Farms

Santa will join us for this special breakfast at Polen Farm. After eating you’ll have some individual one-on-one time with Santa. Seating is very limited so register early. Everyone must register including parents.  $6 for Kettering residents, $10 for all else.

Jane’s Best Bets (10/6 – 10/10)

October 6, 2010 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

This past week was wonderful…and very unique!  I witnessed an elephant in a living room (well, sort of), found out that Minster wasn’t lying about serving beer in half-gallon plastic jugs, and was able to enjoy some fish and chips at my alma mater’s fish fry.  But most importantly, the Browns captured their first win of the season!  (Sorry all you Bengals fans out there.)  Anyways, here are some of the wonderful things going on in Dayton this week!

On Wednesday, row your boat to Otis Redding’s favorite place, The Dock, for their 16th Anniversary.  In order to celebrate, there will be 16 dinners offered at 1994 prices!  Or continue the German Oktoberfest tradition at Hawthorn Grill, as they will be featuring a German menu.  Afterwards, check out the Modern Masters Exhibit from the Smithsonian American Art Museum at the Dayton Art Institute for its final week in Dayton.  Or head to The Neon to experience what I experienced this weekend – The Elephant in the Living Room …which by the way, is a wonderful documentary that features many things Dayton.  Although you may be skeptical of my opinions since I’m by no means a film critic, the movie has earned two “Best Documentary” awards from actual film critics!

On Thursday, get out your Altoids after you experience Cooking with Garlic at the PNC 2nd Street Market.  Just don’t try out your new found cooking skills on a date.  In the evening, speed over to the Dayton Art Institute to see Soul Express as part of the DAI 2010 Vectren Just Jazz Series.  And, if you are a writer, have always wanted to become one, or like me, you just have a passion for your topic but no formal writing experience, head to the Kettering-Moraine branch of the Dayton Metro Library for a presentation entitled The Courage to Write.

On Friday, there will be lots of opportunities for professional development!  All you business people will want to start the day off right with the Dayton Chamber Breakfast Briefingat the Dayton Racquet Club.  Afterwards, check out MAGNETIC Content! – Create, plan and position relevant content that will captivate your audience, which is sponsored by New Media Dayton.  Bring your autograph book as there will be “ROCKSTAR-like” panelists, including our very own Bill Pote, the wonderful founder of DaytonMostMetro.com!  If you are looking to enhance your creativity in the workplace, sign up for the Creativity – Steroids for Your Career workshop at Groundz4Living.  If you are a community advocate, you’ll want to register for the Regional Neighborhood Network Conference, which will be going on over the course of three days at the Dayton Convention Center and the Crowne Plaza Hotel.  In the evening, fly like Superman…Up, Up & Away with McCoo & Davis, as they perform with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.  (You can also find more information about the event by clicking here.)

Saturday is festival day!  Make your way to Waynesville for the famous Sauerkraut Festival or to Yellow Springs for the Yellow Springs Street Fair (check out the DMM article on this event here).  Or, if you haven’t been to enough beer festivals in the past few months, check out the Miami Valley Beer Fest at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, where all proceeds go directly to the Resident Home Association, a non-profit that works with adults who have developmental disabilities, providing them with supervised living assistance and other services.  So, if people ask you why you’ve been drinking every weekend, you can just tell them it is for a great cause!  If you are grieving the fact that Dayton Oktoberfest is over, you can still drink German beer, eat cabbage rolls, and experience live music at the Dayton Liederkranz Oktoberfest! If you want to help kids, be sure to purchase your ticket ASAP for the ‘Help Me, Help Kids’ Wine Tasting and Silent Auction for Big Brothers Big Sisters, which is also on Saturday.  It is more than just wine and a silent auction – there will be food, fun, and live music by Matt Scholp.  Plus, you will walk home (or perhaps take a cab home) with a wine glass and a t-shirt!  A few friends and I attended last year and had such a great time that we are planning to go again this year, so I hope to see you there!

On Sunday, after you go to church, head to the Dayton Art Institute for Musica! Fall Concert – Saints & Sinners.  Musica!, Dayton’s professional choir, will be performing music from a wide variety of musicals, such as Les Miserables, as well as a set of spirituals.  Or watch Cleveland’s second win of the season on FOX as they take on the Atlanta Falcons.  (Apparently this event is not listed on the DaytonMostMetro.com calendar.)  If you’re not wise enough to be a Browns fan, check out the Modern Masters from the Smithsonian American Art Museumat the Dayton Art Institute, as Sunday is the last day for it.  Or, drive down to Waynesville for the Sauerkraut Festival.  And finally, to wind down the busy week, participate in the Free Intro to Yoga classat Practice Yoga on Fifth.

And now it’s time for the Dumb Joke of the Week. Drum roll please…

What did the football say to the punter?
“I get a kick out of you.”

These are just a few best bets from the DMM Calendar.  There are plenty more events listed there, so if you haven’t, I encourage you to check it out today!  Also, if you have an event to share or promote, please submit it – it’s great marketing and better yet, it’s FREE!   And finally, if you have a dumb joke to share, I’m all ears!

Have a great week Dayton!

10 ?’s with The Hawthorn Grill Chef/Owner Candace Rinke

August 3, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby 5 Comments

Chef Candace Rinke found herself drawn to the kitchen at a young age. Her first award was at twelve when she won a blue ribbon for a decorated cake at the county fair. Fostered by her grandmother’s love of entertaining the family and inspired by travels through Europe, her food reflects both warmth and elegance.

While at the University of Michigan in the School of Engineering, Candace discovered she loved cooking more than she enjoyed physics and math. This realization led her down an entirely different path. She has since graduated from Oakland College with a degree in Culinary Arts along with certificates in Food Handling Safety and Nutrition.

Candace has been cooking both personally and professionally for almost 20 years. The Busy Gourmet was a natural outcome of Candace’s lifelong love of preparing food and entertaining. She  relocated to Ohio about 5 years ago and has been busy feeding people in the Dayton area ever since.  In 2006 she launched The Busy Gourmet, a small personal chef service, specializing in small parties and meal service.  While growing this business, Candace was continually looking for a restaurant location, knowing she truly wanted to be a restaurateur.  This past spring the short lived Soprano’s location became available and within a month of signing the lease, Chef had painted, set a menu, hired her staff and opened for business.  Having survived her first Restaurant Week to rave reviews  we think Rinke’s The Hawthorn Grill is fast establishing itself as a dining destination in Dayton.

Enjoy 10 Questions with Chef Candace Rinke:

Enjoy a recipe from The Busy Gourmet's party menu

Enjoy a recipe from The Busy Gourmet’s party menu

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?
Butter, cream and salt – my family always teases me about this but come on…who doesn’t love a good Alfredo or creme brulee…can’t do those dishes without these wonderfully sinful ingredients!!!

What ingredient do you dread?
I can’t really think of anything I dread…I love to work with all kinds of fresh ingredients…the only thing that really comes to mind is soft-shell crab…I just can’t handle cutting off their little heads while they are still alive…!

What’s your favorite dish to make?

I don’t think I have a favorite – I just love food!  And part of the excitement of what I do is coming up with new, tasty dishes all the time.

What’s your favorite pig out food?
Chinese!  And Thai!  I love the complexity of Asian flavors – they’re so well balanced between sweet, spicy, salty and tangy…it takes a special skill to combine all those ingredients without one overpowering another.

What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?
China Cottage in Springboro and Bahn Mai Thai in Centerville – see pig out comment above!

What’s your best advice for home chefs?
What grows together goes together.  Things that are in season at the same time tend to have a natural affinity for each other – like basil and tomatoes or cherries and apricots.  The Italians and French know this better than most of us – if things grow in the ground together and ripen at the same time, it’s likely that they’ll compliment each other on the plate.  Take chances and you’ll probably be delightfully surprised by the outcome!

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?
I think given the choice, I’d like more than four people – my ideal dinner party is a big group of family and friends sitting or standing around the bar in our kitchen eating and drinking until we can’t eat and drink any more!  I’m Polish so I learned early on about hospitality and the concept of “the more the merrier” – and my grandma taught me well how to cook for a crowd so bring it on!

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?
Takashi Yagihashi – I worked with him in Michigan where he won a James Beard Award.  He’s since opened restaurants in Las Vegas and Chicago.  Watching him in action was a real learning experience for me – in my earlier jobs, I saw chefs that screamed, yelled and threw sharp objects.  In Takashi’s kitchen, everything was calm and calculated and executed with the precision of an operating room.  He lead by example and his integrity was above reproach.  I hope I’m able to lead my staff in the same way.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Since we opened I haven’t had a day off (yikes!!!) but when I do get time away from the restaurant I like to spend it with my husband, Kurt, and my kids, Nick, Hayley and Noah – we like to go to Caesar’s Creek and bikeride by the river.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

My lucky break has been finding this space and getting it open in just a few short weeks.  I have been in Dayton for almost 5 years and in that time I worked very hard to develop a catering business out of my house.  After having my son, I was desperate to get out of my own kitchen and into a restaurant to which my husband’s standard answer was “Write the business plan first!”  I finally took a class at the Small Business Development Center in Dayton and after the eight week class and countless days and nights of studying, thinking, planning, researching and writing, I printed out a 37 page business plan outlining my lifelong dream of restaurant ownership.  Over the next year I searched for the perfect location (and waited for the stars to align themselves) and in the beginning of May, the opportunity presented itself at this location.  I signed the paperwork on May 18th and we hit the ground running.  It’s been great, and terrifying, and stressful, and wonderful and the culmination of a lifelong dream.  We’ve been very lucky so far and now we just want to keep going on the roll we’re on, serving people really good food with smiling faces in a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere.  If you leave thinking about the next meal you’ll have with us, we’ve done our job.
