South Park to Stage 1920s Murder Mystery Home Tour

On Saturday, October 1, from 2-6 pm, Historic South Park invites “visiting detectives” to go back in time and help Dayton Police find a killer. “A Prohibition Scandal” is billed as “a guided neighborhood home tour with a twist.” Attendees will be led by the Chief Detective to five historic homes (one of which is rumored to have been a real 1920’s era speakeasy) where they will meet the suspects, witness scenes, ask questions, then meet a local establishment and compare clues over cocktails. Those who crack the case get a chance to win a $100 gift basket filled with swag from South Park and Dayton businesses.

The event — written, directed and acted by South Park residents — is a fundraiser for the neighborhood council, Historic South Park, Inc.  According to co-creators Sarah Dugan and Jeanine Gow, the narrative is inspired by real life in Dayton during the Roaring 20s.

One scene from “A Prohibition Scandal” will take place in the basement if a historic home on Morton Avenue, rumored to have been a 1920’s era speakeasy. It’s one of five homes included on the tour.

Says Sarah, “Our cast of characters include football players from The Dayton Triangles, the original NFL franchise, and suspects inspired by what was popular and newsworthy in Dayton in the 1920s. Besides speakeasies, we’ve taken our cues from vaudeville, spiritualism, glass manufacturing, immigrant communities, quack remedies, and life in the boarding houses that were found everywhere in Dayton at the time.”
So what’s the mystery? A talented but unscrupulous Dayton Triangles quarterback turns up dead and just about everyone is a suspect.

“The tour takes one-and-a-half hours to complete,” says Jeanine, “And we’ve kept the tour groups small. Tours begin at Hope Lutheran Church (500 Hickory Street). There are nine times to choose from, beginning at 2 pm and leaving every half hour with the last tour leaving at 6pm.”

As the tour ends, everyone will be encouraged to gather for a soft or spirited beverage at Wholly Grounds and submit their guess.

HOW TO PLAY DETECTIVE: Wear comfortable shoes! Plan to walk about one and a half miles.
Tickets: $28 at Eventbrite.
Who: You must be 21 years of age or older, since a cocktail is included in the ticket price.

Luminaries of Dayton: Henry Ware, Civil War Soldier

Henry E. Ware Index to Pension File 1894

Henry E. Ware served a three-year enlistment as a private in the Union Army, Company E of the First Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment, from September 1861 to August 1864. This regiment served in Kentucky and Tennessee, fighting in a number of conflicts including Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. During his service, Ware suffered a gunshot wound but fulfilled his enlistment.

Following his return to Dayton, the Dayton City Directory lists Henry as a city fireman from 1866 to 1870 and an engineer from 1876 to 1893.

Henry married Caroline Ziesler on  September 19, 1861 in Montgomery County, Ohio. The Ware family lived at 332 Johnson Street in the South Park Historic District. Henry died on June 22, 1894 due to rheumatism. Henry, Caroline and other family members are buried in Section 69 Lot 396.

Woodland Cemetery, founded in 1841, is one of the nation’s five oldest rural garden cemeteries and a unique cultural, botanical and educational resource in the heart of Dayton, Ohio as you will see as you read through this new MostMetro.com series. Visit the cemetery and arboretum and take one of the many tours Woodland offers free of charge. Most of Dayton’s aviation heroes, inventors and business barons are buried at Woodland.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is located at 118 Woodland Avenue off of Brown Street near the UD Campus. The Woodland Office is open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday 8 am to 12 pm. BradfordLiving in a historic district is not like living anywhere else, and living in Historic South Park is no exception. This community is active, vibrant, neighborly, and very community-oriented. Curious to know more? This Sunday, November 3, 2013, from 2-4 p.m., Historic South Park is hosting a Neighborhood Open House.

Ten different homes are going to be open to visitors, all of them are currently listed for sale. A wide variety of homes will be represented during this event, everything from small, affordable bungalows, to large showcase homes and everything in between.

But it’s not all Realtors. There will be South Park neighbors co-hosting at a few of the Open Houses to give you an opportunity to speak directly and candidly with folks who live in the neighborhood. PerrineThose are the people who can talk at length about all the activities, groups, support available in the South Park neighborhood, as well as the pros and cons of living in, and caring for, these special historic homes.

Ghostlight Coffee is where your tour begins- stop in for maps, flyers, printouts, and of course, some awesome coffee, and then spend the afternoon in this lovely community. It’s Historic Real Estate Porn for you addicts, and some serious home shopping for anyone looking to buy a home.

Some of our most effective urban revitalization comes from the city’s many neighborhood associations, yet a lot of my well-intentioned friends have never been involved with their local group. Some of them don’t even seem to know what neighborhood they live in. (No, all of Southeast Dayton is not Belmont like your realtor told you.) So I thought I’d take a minute to share with you the City of Dayton neighborhood directory and map, divided into 64 unique planning districts. Sometimes the planning district name might not be the same as the common neighborhood or historic district name – for instance Five Points is now known more as Wright-Dunbar and Historic Inner East as St. Anne’s, Huffman, and Newcom Plain. I also asked our Facebook group members to help me compile a list of neighborhoods with a web presence and here’s what we came up with. Let us know what we missed in the comments section below. Once you find your neighborhood, introduce yourself at their monthly meeting!

Twin Towers neighborhood teens meet with updayton to plan a new park for their neighborhood

  • Our updayton Streetvival team is moving forward with plans to turn a vacant lot at the heart of the Twin Towers neighborhood (Xenia & McClure) into an outdoor ‘reading room’ and performance space with an interactive chalkboard mural. This month we met with the neighborhood association and teens from Peace Academy and Camino de Vida after school programs. In October we will host a Fall Work Weekend to lay the groundwork for completing our pocket park at Xenia & McClure in the spring. Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10am (prep/prime wall and plant trees) and Sunday, Oct 14 at 1pm (paint chalkboard). Contact me to get involved.
  • The “Old” Yellow Cab Building is a 7,000 sqft grassroots community arts space at the eastern edge of the Oregon District near Garden Station; both began as initiatives of the Circus Creative Collective. They could always use help from handy volunteers, and in particular are looking for someone with HVAC experience to get furnaces up and running in their garage performance space. Let Jeff Opt know if you’re that person, or if you’d like to use the space for a creative event, contact Christina Lewis.
  • Garden Station still needs more volunteers at their weekly Saturday morning work sessions. Show up at 4th and Wayne from 8:30am to noon and Lisa  will put you to work!

    Bike Miami Valley found some great volunteers for their valet through this column, including these UD students!

  • What to do with that vacant lot?– Got some energy to help clear the weeds next door? Get a head start on next year’s season by registering with the City’s Care A Lot program. Or learn how to take it over as your own through Lot Links.
  • The Community Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence is hosting a community discussion on what you can do to reduce violence in your neighborhood, Thursday, Sep. 27, 5:30-7:30pm, Northwest Recreational Facility. A nice overview on Dayton’s innovative community policing and its chief can be found here.
  • Walnut Hills Delivery Crew – The mayor’s ‘hood, Walnut Hills, is building a team to hand deliver its new newsletter. So if you live in Walnut Hills, leave a comment here.
  • The last alley sweep of the year will be in Historic Huffman. I’m sure they’d welcome extra hands from everywhere!: Jeff Heath, 301-8556
  • Quick & affordable housing – Check out this cool video of how 100+ Habitat volunteers raised a house in eight minutes last Saturday. To volunteer in the future, visit their website.
  • Don’t forget the downtown dog park cleanup we mentioned last week! Deeds Point, Saturday and Sunday, Sep. 29-30, 9am to 1ish each day. Bring your dog, gloves and any brush removal tool you own. Contact Karen Stephens, 510-6900.

Volunteers led creative PARK(ing) Day activities in the parklets, from yoga to stories to drumming.

  • Yarnbomb Dayton (or just knit)! – Noticed any colorful ‘knit graffiti’ around the Oregon District? It was probably the work of the Oregon Sip-n-Stitch, which meets every 4th Thursday (e.g. this Thursday) at Deaf Monty’s Inn Port d’Vino from 5-8. Open to any ‘portable handcrafts.’ Wine, beer and light snacks are available for purchase; BYO snacks to share are welcome. Contact Margot.
  • Yogic takeover of the boulevard! When the famous Olmstead Brothers designed South Park’s lovely Park Drive boulevard in the 1880s, I bet they never imagined dozens of yogis praticing their sun salutations. Join the first-ever Yoga on the Boulevard with Practice Yoga, Friday, Sep. 28, 6pm.
  • Meet your Salem Avenue-area neighbors at the Festival of Neighborhoods, Saturday, Sep. 29, 3-6pm, Grace United Methodist.
  • Blanket concert – The Patterson Park neighborhood has planned a community concert on their commons. Sunday, Sep. 30, 6-8pm.

A Tragedy in South Park…and Idina Flies into Cincy!

SHAKESPEARE IN HISTORIC SOUTH PARK

A few years ago I met up with my family in Columbus to attend a Shakespeare in the Park production in German Village.  While not a huge fan of “The Bard,” I still completely enjoyed the experience.  The acting was terrrific, it was a perfect atmosphere-a great sense of community and idyllic summer evening under the stars with my family watching the Tempest.  Fast forward a couple of years and the neighborhood in which I now reside in Dayton has the same great tradition.

This weekend marks the third outdoor Shakespeare production in the Historic South Park neighborhood in as many years.  The passionate and dedicated troupe of actors and other volunteers have previously produced A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM (2009) and MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (2008).  The 2010 Shakespeare in South Park Company will tackle it’s first tragedy in  what will surely be a unique setting for the classic ROMEO & JULIET.   As in past productions, a significant number of cast and crew are Historic South Park neighborhood residents.

From the Official Press Release:

Director Daniel Wilson has set the famous story of star-crossed lovers shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War and placed it near the border state region in a spot historically similar to Montgomery County, Ohio. As students of history know, it was a time when sympathies still ran hot. The Montagues (Romeo’s family) are depicted as Union soldiers and officers; Juliet’s Capulets as Confederates.

The director explains his choice for the play’s setting: “The Civil War’s causes are complex, but…those involved came to believe the only way to resolve their differences was through violence. Romeo and Juliet is a play about…non-violence. Friar Laurence (“Mother Laurence” in this production, played by Judi Earley), the only character respected by [both the Montaguesand Capulets], consistently preaches the need for balance and peace.”

By setting the play 150 years ago in America, Wilson finds renewed relevance in a 400-year-old play written in England and set in Italy. The divisive politics of today have left people unwilling to compromise. Shakespeare’s play reminds us that if we are unwilling to find peaceful solutions to our differences, our children will pay the price.

Dayton Skyline as viewed from South Park GreenThe venue for Romeo & Juliet will once again be the South Park Green, an intimate park located on Hickory Street.  The troupe reports that they will be utilizing a historic two-story carriage house in the bordering property as a backdrop.  This setting also provides a terrific opportunity for the famous “Balcony Scene,” utilizing a second story window and the foliage below.

A unique South Park presence in Romeo and Juliet will be the antique sword carried by Lord Montague. Made in Cincinnati about 1900, it was found in the attic of 130 Alberta Street during a mid-1980s rehab, and has remained with the house, passed to each successive homeowner.

Show times are 8:00 PM Friday through Sunday, September 17-19 at South Park Green on Hickory Street in the Historic South Park neighborhood.

Shakespeare in South Park productions are free to the public, while contributions are gratefully received and used to defray costs of the show. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket.

The weekend is calling for some gorgeous weather, with just a slight chance of rain on Sunday. If it does rain, don’t worry, the play will be staged at Hope Lutheran Church, 500 Hickory Street.

Tony Award winner Idina Menzel has a diverse career on the stage, in films and in music. Menzel recently joined the cast of GLEE, the Fox juggernaut where she plays the coach of rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline, McKinley High Glee Club’s main competition. Last year, Menzel concluded a national tour promoting her album, I Stand. A skillful songwriter, Idina writes and performs her own music. She released the Glen Ballard-produced album for her record label, Warner Bros. Records, and played to sold out houses around the United States. Menzel performed her show in New York as part of the Mastercard Soundstage series, which aired on PBS. PBS also aired the concert version of Chess: The Musical, recorded at the Royal Albert Hall where Idina shared the stage with Josh Groban. In film, Idina appeared opposite Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams in Disney’s hit, ENCHANTED as well as Chris Columbus’ film version of the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical RENT, in which she reprised her role as Maureen. This was on the heels of her co-starring role in Robert Towne’s ASK THE DUST, opposite Salma Hayek and Colin Farrell.

In television, Idina recently completed an arc on the Grey’s Anatomy hit spin-off, PRIVATE PRACTICE on ABC.

Menzel completed her Tony Award winning performance, for Lead Actress in a Musical, in WICKED in December 2005.  Helmed by Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello, WICKED has played to packed audiences at the Gershwin Theatre since it opened in October 2003. Additionally, Menzel was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her role as the misunderstood green girl.

Idina received a Tony nomination for her Broadway debut performance as Maureen, in the original production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning hit RENT. She also earned a Drama Desk nomination for her performance as Kate in Manhattan Theater Club’s Off- Broadway original musical THE WILD PARTY.
