LTC Charity Adams and the women of The Six Triple Eight Documentary Screenig

October 31, 2022 By Dayton937

In February 1945, the U.S. Army sent 855 black women from the Women’s Army Corps “WACs” to England and France to clear the backlog of mail in the European Theater of Operations. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, known as the SixTripleEight, was the only all-black female battalion to serve in Europe during WWII.

Confronted with racism and sexism from their own leadership and troops, they served with honor and distinction completing their mission in six months. By war’s end, the SixTripleEight had cleared over 17 million pieces of backlogged mail ensuring the troops stayed in touch with their loved ones back home. The last of the women returned home in March 1946.

They were never fully recognized until now.

Join us as we honor former Dayton Ohio community leader Charity Adams and the women of The SixTripleEight with screening of the documentary created by Lincoln Penny Films.

LTC Charity Adams

The Six Triple Eight, a World War II film, shares the relatively-unknown story of the 6888, the Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-black female battalion to serve in Europe during the war. Their mission: to clear the backlog of mail in Birmingham, England and Rouen, France. By war’s end the women, the unit had cleared over 17 million pieces of mail. The film was nominated for Best Documentary at the Charlotte Black Film Festival in April 2019. May 13-17, 2019, James and two producers of the film, traveled to England, courtesy of the US Embassy to screen the film at universities and venues throughout the UK. Dubbed the Six Triple Eight UK Tour, the film was well-received in England and Scotland.

By the end of WWII, LTC Charity Adams was the highest ranking African American female in the Armed Forces.

Free screening of this film will be shown:

Fri, Nov 4th 2pm
Wilberforce University Screening,

Sat, Nov 5th 3:00pm
Sinclair College Screening

Attendance is free, but reservations are requested.

Reserve here.

This screening is made possible by Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission, The Dayton Woman’s Club, The Dayton Foundation and Tim & Mary Riordan.

New Michael Moore Film Now Playing at THE NEON!

February 13, 2016 By Jonathan McNeal

Where_to_Invade_Next-727341632-largeHello Everyone,

We just opened a documentary that is insightful, optimistic and terribly funny – Michael Moore’s WHERE TO INVADE NEXT. Knowing Moore’s work, you might look at the title and feel as though you already know where this film is going…but it’s actually quite a different tone (more below). In addition, we’re holding ANOMALISA as well as the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS (we’ve even brought back the documentaries for a few screenings). On February 19, we will open the new highly-anticipated Maggie Smith film – THE LADY IN THE VAN.

Synopsis for WHERE TO INVADE NEXT: “WHERE TO INVADE NEXT is an expansive, rib-tickling, and subversive comedy in which Moore, playing the role of ‘invader,’ visits a host of nations to learn how the U.S. could improve its own prospects. The creator of FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE is back with this hilarious and eye-opening call to arms. Turns out the solutions to America’s most entrenched problems already existed in the world – they’re just waiting to be co-opted.” (taken from Drafthouse Films) Entertainment Weekly wrote, “Where to Invade Next is so heartfelt and sincere, it’s tempting to say that Moore’s mellowed with age. But beneath its innocent-abroad optimism, the film has a stinging truth that’s hard to ignore.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Our friends at ThinkTV are helping us once again to get a signal for our Annual FREE Oscar Party! This year’s telecast will happen on Sunday, February 28, and Ballots (where you can predict the winners for awesome prizes) are now available in our lobby. Our friends at Square One Salon & Spa are once again donating a fantastic prize that will part of our Grand Prize – “The Star Treatment.” Keep tuning in for more details!

“The Junior Leaguers Club of Dayton will sponsor a screening of OPPOSITE FIELD on March 5, 2016 at Noon. This is the club’s fifth annual fundraiser at THE NEON, and this movie is a classic underdog sports story about an Ugandan Little League team. This documentary is inspiring and will have the audience displaying a wide range of emotions as the team makes history as the first African team hosted by the Little League World Series. This is a great film for adults and our youth. The funds raised will go into the Junior Leaguers Club scholarship fund. The tickets are $30 for adults (which include movie, glass of wine, glass of soda, and popcorn) and $15 for students (which include soda and popcorn). Tickets can be purchased at THE NEON. Guest speakers for this screening will be Mr. Ron Johnson, president First Dayton Little League and Mr. Keith Byars, former NFL professional player and a little league player in his youth.” (taken from press notes)

Due to the upcoming holiday, we will have later hours on Sunday and earlier hours on Monday. Please see all of our upcoming showtimes below.

We hope to see you soon!
Thanks for your continued support!

Reinventing The Telling of Stories – A New Interactive Website About Dayton Wants Your Input

March 11, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

POSTCARDIn the Spring of 2012, Emmy-winning, Oscar nominated filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar, along with about 15 other media artists, hit the streets of Dayton asking the question, “How is Dayton doing?” Engaging subjects in thoughtful interviews and creating compelling, non-fiction stories is nothing new for Reichert and Bognar – but it turns out that this project was much more difficult than anticipated.

“This was a really ambitious project,” said Bognar. “We were attempting to take the pulse of the whole city. And we did not know what the answers would be.”

After identifying a handful of focus neighborhoods, the group—which was a collaboration with WYSO 91.3 FM— split into teams. They began to find and interview people who were in the process of reinventing themselves. In addition, the group documented over 35 events throughout the city. After weeks and months of sifting through hundreds of hours of material (not to mention a whole different language of web design), the resulting efforts can now be seen on an interactive website – ReinventionStories.Org.

Upon logging on the site, the first thing you’ll see is a beautifully animated introduction featuring a vintage postcard of the city and various soundbytes from numerous interviews. This introduction leads into an 18-minute documentary featuring 7 individuals from various neighborhoods. Using a combination of still photography, audio interviews and video footage, users get a sense for who these people are and how they are in the process of reinventing themselves. Each piece ends with a sort of cliffhanger. This 18-minute piece is merely Act One of three. In the coming weeks, each of the seven characters’ stories will continue in Act Two and Three. Reichert says that as the stories unfold, more dramatic material will reveal itself. She said, “These stories fit together to tell a bigger story about the city. We wanted to capture our City’s life and diversity and to show that we’re not all that far from each other. We’re all in this together.”

7 StoriesThe 7 subjects of the documentary on ReinventionStories.org.

Those ideas are conveyed even more as we “Drive the Road.” This section of the website takes the viewer down East 3rd Street. The voice of Carol Coffey, teller of one of the stories, asks: “ What signs of life do you see in Dayton?” While passing storefronts and houses, a series of bubbles appear that allow the user to watch short stories about events from over the summer, prompting the viewer to think about that question. One story is about the Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus, another is about the Blessing of the Bikes, another, the World Soccer Tournament, sponsored by Welcome Dayton.

The storytellers want us to think about the fabric of the city…that all these very different events are happening in the same town.

In a third section of the site, the user is asked questions like “Where do you see signs of life in Dayton?” or “What city event do you most look forward to each year?” Once answered, the responses are broadcast via twitter. @ReinventDayton

In addition to new sections of the documentary, the coming months will see more coverage of events while “Driving Down the Road” and additional questions posed to users. The team also noted that “treasures have yet to be unveiled.”

The website went live in late February, but the idea is to let the website become a living, breathing site that will reveal more elements in time. The interactive part will rely on users to keep it fresh and alive. By April, Daytonians can upload their own stories of reinvention.

NEENAH JULIA STEVENeenah Ellis of WYSO and filmmakers Steve Bognar & Julia Reichert.

This project came about when WYSO director Neenah Ellis approached Reichert and Bognar regarding a national competition called LOCALORE – a new initiative of the Association of Independents in Radio (AIR), in collaboration with Zeega (a group of people who want to push non-fiction storytelling into unchartered territory*). Hundreds of organizations applied for the competition – only 10 were selected.

Bognar said he had so much fun running around the city over the summer. He noted that there was so much to do and that events were all always well attended. “When we started, we weren’t really sure how the city was doing. But luckily for the project and for the community, a corner was turning as we hit the streets. People were taking risks, opening new businesses, forming groups, and we caught the wave.” Reichert added, “A year later, we can answer with certainty. Yes. The city is very much alive and growing.

*AUTHOR’S BONUS NOTE FOR CINEASTES – Bognar told me that Zeega is named after Dziga Vertov – director of the masterpiece MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA. This is a great treat for film lovers. Vertov’s films and theories influenced the cinema verite movement…which pushed “non-fiction storytelling into unchartered territory.”

A Premiere Evening SPARKLES

November 2, 2012 By Megan Cooper 1 Comment

It’s well-documented that the Dayton community is one of extraordinary innovation, arts and collaboration. That synergy will be on display at tonight’s sold-out November 2 (and newly added second performance November 4) with A Premiere Evening – a benefit for the world-renowned Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.

The evening includes the local premiere of the newest hit from award-winning filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar. Their latest project, SPARKLE, won the Audience Award for Best Short Documentary at SilverDocs, the largest documentary film festival in the United States.

Sparkle tells the story of celebrated Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC) dancer Sheri “Sparkle” Williams as she recovers from the first major injury in her 38-year career. Reichert and Bognar followed Williams through her months-long recovery process and offers the project to answer the question “Will she ever dance again?”  The film offers audiences a rare behind-the-scenes look at DCDC’s rehearsals and performances. A Q&A with the filmmakers follows the screening.

After the film screening, the audience will be treated to the world premiere of a dance created by the impassioned choreographer Rodney Brown for Sparkle “The Gatherer/weething” and a short performance by the world-renowned Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. Truly a premiere evening! Tickets are available now.

I talked to the woman of the hour – Sheri “Sparkles’ Williams – to learn about her experience as the subject of the short film by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert and what audiences may expect.

Film is a very different medium than dance – was it a challenge from your perspective blending the two?

As documentarians – they don’t interrupt at all. It’s our regular rehearsal and they capture that – nothing is affected by their filming. Most of the time you don’t realize they’re there – you forget. They didn’t affect our day at all – no retakes, no stopping to get another angle or anything.

Were you concerned to have them following you during this vulnerable and challenging time of your career?

No, not all at – no pressure – no anything. My only concern had nothing to do with the documenting – my only concern was getting myself together.

What do you hope people will come away feeling after seeing the film and seeing you on stage?

I would hope people will get an opportunity to feel good about something. This may be dance and how it affects me, but (people) can be pushed back and overcome it. Know you’re not alone. You can make it happen. And it’s uplifting – the film is uplifting. And the whole evening together – from film to live movement – we are a family – we support each other, there’s camaraderie running amok. We work hard, but it’s a family and they were rooting me on. All of us get affected in some way – what we do is strenuous and people get hurt, but we’re there for each other.

Anything else?

Filmmakers of the caliber of Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar – it’s just amazing that they would want to spend their time with me. It’s been such an amazing experience – I’ve learned so much from them. I’ve had a great time and I have two more friends now. This whole evening is such an honor and such a joy -I’m so excited by it.

Don’t miss this great event! If you haven’t got your tickets for the Friday night benefit, don’t fear! By overwhelming demand a second show has been added on Sunday, November 4 at 5:30 PM at the Dayton Art Institute. Tickets are general admission and available for only $25 at TicketCenterStage.

There’s A Starman Waiting In The Sky

November 8, 2011 By J.T. Ryder 1 Comment

The Resurrection of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars

In the post apocalyptic wasteland of what could be mistaken for the present, a Leper Messiah lunges into the spotlight, ready and albeit a tad too willing to save humanity with merely the sacrifice of his soul. A shock of shocking shag cut red hair defies the laws of nature as the asymmetrically dilated wonder filled eyes defies the apathetically addled masses to ignore the impending termination of humanity as a whole. Is this the act of a sacrificial lamb? The crucifixion of yet another messianic messenger’s? Or might this be a rock and roll suicide set in C major? Whatever your interpretation, it is, unarguably, the final teachings from the Gospel of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

David Bowie has always been the master chameleon, being able to sense trends and incorporate upcoming styles into whatever persona he was projecting at the time that, even those that he aggressively borrowed from felt honored by the imaginative pilfering. From the vast catalogue of Bowie’s affected personas, Ziggy Stardust stands out as one of the most completely three dimensional characters that he has created and personified that glittering epoch, with Bowie’s colorful incarnation becoming the poster child for the glam era.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, for the uninitiated, is a concept album crafted by Bowie. The storyline, as such, is a convoluted array of perceptive sociology, religious icons wrapped snuggly in familiar parables all bound together in a roiling spiral of science fiction. The inspiration for the album/character itself is steeped in mythos, which includes such fringe personalities as The Legendary Stardust Cowboy and Vince Taylor, also known as the French Elvis who, after completely going off his nut, fired his band and went on stage draped in a sheet to inform the audience that he was the new messiah. Vince also had a penchant for carrying around maps of Europe to show anyone who stood still long enough where the UFOs would be landing. From these shards of broken soul, Ziggy was born.

Under Bowie’s skillful hands, the story emerges that the main character, Ziggy, takes on the role of a messianic messenger, filling the plundering youth with news of the world. In what turns out to be the Earth’s final five years of existence, the news happens to be quite bad but, from the whispered information that he is receiving through dreams from the black hole jumping Infinites, Ziggy is told of a savior: the Starman. The message is seized by the masses with a vigor that only the abjectly hopeless can muster. Riding on the wave of the Message, Ziggy is exulted up into new spiritual heights, but soon succumbs to his own Earlthy desires, living a reckless life that leaves him as a shell, a fractured liberator. When the Infinites arrive, they use their vessel to give themselves life, taking of their host Ziggy, until he dies a martyr’s death.

The documentary film by D.A. Pennebaker (Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars) chronicles the last concert Bowie performs as Ziggy. Filmed at the Hammersmith Odeon on July 3rd, 1973, this was Bowie’s last hurrah as he partially shelved the character of Ziggy. The impetuous for the premature retirement rested on several elements, one of which was that the character was threatening to outstrip the creator. The documentary itself dabbled very little behind the scenes, choosing instead to generate a full frontal assault of the ninety minute concert itself.

In this vein, local artist, entrepreneur and agent of rebellion Shelly “Gladgirl” Hulce became enamored with the concept, music and the film at an early age and she always kept this fantasy vision of it in the back of her mind…until now. “Back when I was a teenager, I was really into Bowie and really anything that was considered shocking. At the time, the most shocking thing was glam rock. I was raised in a very strict Baptist home. I mean to the point that we didn’t watch movies, wear pants, cut hair…” Gladgirl went on to detail some of the other elements of her upbringing before adding, “Rock and roll was just totally out of the question, so I would sneak and listen to it. I snuck a Bowie poster and hung it inside the closet where nobody could find it. We had these teen bonfires and many times I burnt the same records over and over. I would burn them at this church bonfire and then I would save up my lunch money and replace them.”

With Bowie’s body of work being arguably more theatrical than musically motivated, this mirrored some of Gladgirl’s interests within her own life.  “For me, music, theater and comedy have all been synonymous. My worlds have always collided. I did improv comedy for two years, travelling with a troupe and I’ve played with a couple of bands. I’ve never gotten into acting, but I’ve always been writing. I have written a rock opera using all music from Queen. I haven’t done anything with that because it’s very extensive and I wouldn’t even know where to start with something like that. I guess I will work my way up. Some opportunity will present itself when the timing is right and so I can put it into the back of my brain until then.” Exposure to ETC (Encore Theater Company) brought Gladgirl face to face with fringe musicals like Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This chance encounter was the starting point to push her vision into reality.

“I went to see Hedwig last April and as soon as JJ (Parkey) came out and belted that first big song and I just turned to Juliet and said. ‘That’s Bowie! That’s my Bowie!’ I really didn’t even pay attention to the rest of the show. All I kept thinking was, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God! I have to meet this guy! How do I pitch this idea? Who can I get for the band?’” Gladgirl ended the thought abashedly, “I was just terrible.”

Instead of immediately plunging into the pitch after the show ended, Gladgirl decided to show restraint only found in the best of stalker: she waited. Another opportunity presented itself a short time later.

“JJ and I were at a FilmDayton function together a few weeks later and I was like, ‘Hey! Let’s talk about David Bowie! What do you know about David Bowie and about Ziggy Stardust?’ and he was like, ‘What’s that?’” dejected but not dissuaded, Gladgirl took things into perspective. “I mean, he’s twenty-three years old at that point…he’s twenty-four now. So, after this, I’m just like, ‘Oh my gosh! Will you sit with me and watch a film and let me talk to you about an idea I have?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh, absolutely!’ We met up the next week and sat down and watched the documentary, which was the very last show that Bowie did in character as Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Well, they filmed that show on July 3rd, 1973 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London and what is so bizarre about this is that the night I had JJ up to watch the documentary was July 3rd. The opening credits came up and I was like, ‘Oh my God! That was July 3rd! It’s July 3rd!’”

Kismet and karma were not finished meddling with the vision of the production just yet…

“I was already, in the back of my mind, dreaming of doing a rock opera and thinking about who would be my dream team. There are so many good musicians in town that it’s just amazing.” The eventual line up of the band is a representation of the cream of Dayton’s music scene. “Oh, it’s stellar! I got everyone I wanted right off the bat. I went straight to the ones I wanted and I thought that I would have to work my way down, but every one of them were like, ‘Oh yeah! Definitely!”

There were even some inclusions that, on the face of it, seemed incongruous choices for a recreated glam band, such as local blues guitarist, Noah Wotherspoon.  “Yeah, he’s such a blues guy, but he really loves it all. The cool thing is that he really has a vintage red Hagstrom guitar just like Bowie played during the Ziggy era!”

Some of the musicians were more obvious choices because of their own musical leanings.  “Shrug, which is Tod Weidner’s band, were having a CD release party a few years ago at Canal Street and to surprise their fans, they came out and did the entire album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust. It totally shocked everybody and, of course, it stuck with me. Tod, being such a great singer, pulled it off vocally as Bowie and the band did the music perfectly. So, I had that in the back of my head, but with Tod traveling and doing the Pink Floyd tribute band (Set The Controls) around the nation…”

Gladgirl trailed off, indicating the slim chances of being able to have Tod as part of the band. “To know his stamina and to know his musical genius and being able to do anything that is put in front of him, I knew that there was no way that I could do this without Tod. Absolutely no way. So I called Tod and I said, ‘Look, I’ve got this guy and I have this idea and I know your schedule is crazy…I know you’re not going to have any time to do this, but I just had to ask you, is there any way that you could squeeze this in? What’s your schedule like in the Fall? Tod said, ‘Probably around Thanksgiving or maybe a little earlier than that.’ I said, ‘What about 11/11/11?’ and he’s like, “That’s pretty sweet! I’m in!’ It was just like the stars were aligning! I had my two pillars: JJ and Tod.

The other band members are bassist Chris Corn, drummer Ian Kaplan, keyboardist Ken Hall, percussionist Erich Reith, Marie Spohn and Gladgirl herself. With the band in place, the next hurdle would be the costumes.

“JJ and I have been making the costumes for this show from scratch since July. Well, with the exception of one piece, which I hired Tracy McElfresh to make. She’s a third generation dress maker and she’s killer. I told Tracy that I was going to buy this shirt and try to make this spaceman costume but that I didn’t think it was going to work and I asked her to help. She sent me off to the fabric store with a list and I bought the stuff and brought it back to her.”Gladgirl paused, reflecting on what her event has become. “That’s what this has all turned into. It’s just a collective. This whole event has just been a huge collaboration.”

One of the most interesting aspects of this passion play is that, at a time when Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar were espousing a reconceived image of Biblical prophesies and parables, Ziggy chose instead to cloak his message in a shimmering cloud of veiled innuendos.

“It was all Biblical, but he didn’t blatantly come out and say that this had a Biblical bend to it, but there are so many comparisons that you could make. The arc of the story is the same.” Gladgirl said before launching into the parallels. “The Starman messiah with a message of the world ending in five years and then he is betrayed by one of the Spiders From Mars and he’s crucified. John the Baptist is in there and Judas, Mary Magdalene, the Holy Trinity…Bowie is the Trinity at different points throughout the album and he is the Leper Messiah…the whole bit. Bowie even went as far as to match a lot of his costumes to whatever character he was in the Trinity. When he comes out, he comes down with the message for Five Years, he is wearing an all white kimono, so it’s like this pure deity kind of thing.”

While there are many fantastic tribute bands that abound in our area, Gladgirl wants to make the distinction that this is not merely a tribute featuring the music of David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust. This is a faithful recreation of the epic show that Bowie presented at the Hammersmith Odeon on July 3rd, 1973.  “What I’m telling people is that this is not a tribute show like with people just showing up and doing Bowie’s music.” Gladgirl stated. “This is a passion play and it totally follows the whole arc that Bowie did as Ziggy. That’s why I titled this The Resurrection. I call it a ‘rock and roll rapture.’”

There are some added features to this show that were not in the original, such as a piece written by Gladgirl herself.  “The way that I’m presenting this to the audience is Chris Shea from Free Shakespeare will be coming out before Noah’s band and Ziggy’s set and I’ve dubbed him The News Guy because, in one of the lyrics, it talks about being ‘baptized by the News Guy’s tears.’ I’ve also written what I call The Soul Love Greeting…Soul Love being one of the songs about the Holy Spirit.” Gladgirl went on to explain that, “…this is all to lead a person to think. There’s twenty-four songs and I listed lyrics from each song and made this list for Chris Shay to present to the audience. After that, the real fun begins!”

Space Oddity: The Resurrection of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars will be held at Gilly’s (132 S. Jefferson St.) on November 11th at 9:00pm. Tickets are only $10 and presale tickets are available at Omega, Record Gallery in the Oregon District, Toxic Beauty Records in Yellow Springs and Game Swap in Woodlane Plaza in Kettering. Chad Wells of Wells & Co. Tattoo and Cricketbows will be on hand to provide Liquid Skin Display – Glam Rock Face Painting before and during the show for anyone wanting the full glam experience. Another, as yet to be announced ‘mystery guest musician’ will also be present.

THE NEON Gets To PAGE ONE

August 10, 2011 By Jonathan McNeal 3 Comments

Hello Everyone.

We’ve had a great summer so far…and you certainly helped to keep the ball rollin’ with BUCK.  Our weekend was fantastic, and positive word-of-mouth should keep this film going for a little while.  In addition to BUCK, we’re going to bring you another documentary which also has some great buzz – PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES.  In addition, we’re going to keep MIDNIGHT IN PARIS for yet another week.  Crowds keep coming to this little gem, and it’s quickly becoming one of our longest running and highest grossing summer films.

If you haven’t had a chance to see BEGINNERS, Thursday will be your last chance.  For showtimes for this week and next, visit www.neonmovies.com.

Synopsis for PAGE ONE:  “In the tradition of great fly-on-the-wall documentaries, Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times deftly gains unprecedented access to The New York Times newsroom and the inner workings of the Media Desk. With the Internet surpassing print as our main news source and newspapers all over the country going bankrupt, PAGE ONE chronicles the transformation of the media industry at its time of greatest turmoil. Writers like Brian Stelter, Tim Arango and the salty but brilliant David Carr track print journalism’s metamorphosis even as their own paper struggles to stay vital and solvent. Meanwhile, their editors and publishers grapple with existential challenges from players like WikiLeaks, new platforms ranging from Twitter to tablet computers, and readers’ expectations that news online should be free. But rigorous journalism is thriving. PAGE ONE gives us an up-close look at the vibrant cross-cubicle debates and collaborations, tenacious jockeying for on-the-record quotes, and skillful page-one pitching that produce the “daily miracle” of a great news organization. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of journalists continuing to produce extraordinary work-under increasingly difficult circumstances.” (Magnolia Picutures)

Click HERE to visit PAGE ONE’s Official site.  Click HERE to visit BUCK’s Official site.

In the next few days, I will release the entire line-up for The 6th Annual Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival.  The selection committee sorted through over a hundred hours of material in order to bring the best films to Dayton.  For a sneak peek, check out a trailer for our opening night film – THE GREEN – sponsored by Square One Salon & Spa.

Hope to see you soon.

Take care!

Javier Bardem in BIUTIFUL Opens + Our Oscar Success!

March 3, 2011 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

Wow! What a great weekend. On top of our Oscar party seeing its biggest crowd ever (we were at capacity!) BARNEY’S VERSION performed better than the national average. Thanks for your continued support in making THE NEON your destination for great cinema.

On top of holding onto BARNEY’S VERSION, we will hold RABBIT HOLE for one more week. If you haven’t seen this fantastic film, please hurry down. I’ve had a few people tell me that they didn’t intend to see RABBIT HOLE until I urged them to do so…and they’re so glad they saw it.

On Friday we will begin a film that was nominated for 2 major awards at this year’s Oscars. Starring Javier Bardem and directed by Alejandro Gonzelez Inarritu (director of 21 GRAMS and BABEL), BIUTIFUL was nominated for “Best Actor” and “Best Foreign Film.”

Synopsis for BIUTIFUL: “Academy Award winner Javier Bardem plays a man on the wrong side of the law who struggles to provide for his children on the dangerous streets of Barcelona. The latest film from Academy Award nominee Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Biutiful won the award for Best Actor at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.” (Roadside Attractions)
I saw BIUTIFUL at the Toronto Film Fest in September, and I think it’s a stunning film. Though certainly of heavy subject matter, it’s quite worth the ride. Bardem is superb!  Visit the official website by clicking HERE.

Last year marked the first time that THE FOUND FOOTAGE FESTIVAL made a stop in Dayton. Folks loved the show, the fellas are on the road again. On Sunday, March 20 at 7:30, THE FOUND FOOTAGE FESTIVAL will return to THE NEON with a new batch of material. Visit the official website to find out more about the show. Advanced tickets ($11 each) are only available on-line by visiting this LINK.

THE 11th DAYTON JEWISH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL is just around the corner. Screenings at THE NEON begin on Thursday, March 24th…and I’ll give you even more details in next week’s newsletter. To see a list of titles, screening venues, showtimes and ticket details, click this LINK.

Tickets for the documentary NORTH DIXIE DRIVE are flying from our box office! The film will play on Saturday, March 26 at 5:00pm and tickets are $6 each (and only $4 for members of FilmDayton). “North Dixie Drive is the portrait of a small community of businesses and people residing in the Northridge section of Dayton, OH. It is the story of big time wrestlers, mechanics, a donut salesmen, an eccentric country singer, barbers, exotic dancers and car repo men. This collection of people, from all walks of life, live and work around a traffic circle situated along highway I-75, and fight to keep their lives and careers afloat in a failing economy. This debut film by Brooklyn, NY filmmaker Eric Mahoney showcases an off beat group of characters in today’s Middle America.” (taken from website) You can see a trailer and read more about the film by visiting the official site.

If you were lucky enough to see Djuna Wahlrab’s short film FALLING UP, don’t miss seeing her set pieces and puppets at the 5th Street Gallery at Stivers School for the Arts. The exhibit is up and running…and it is completely stunning. Call (937)542-7448 for more details.

If you’re in the mood for an escapist, well-reviewed, hysterical, dirty-minded comedy…we’ve got you covered. CEDAR RAPIDS is set to open on March 11.

We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Another Year, Barney’s Version + FREE Oscar Party!

February 25, 2011 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Though RABBIT HOLE didn’t perform quite like THE KING’S SPEECH, you helped make Dayton look a lot more film savvy than many other similar-sized markets. RABBIT HOLE had a successful weekend, and I’ve heard many, many positive reviews. Therefor, RABBIT HOLE will stick around…and we’ll still manage to open 2 new films – BARNEY’S VERSION and ANOTHER YEAR.

Synopsis for ANOTHER YEAR: “British filmmaker Mike Leigh delivers another emotionally honest portrait of ordinary people trying to make sense of their lives in this comedy drama. Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri (Ruth Sheen) are a couple who are drifting past middle age into their sixties; he’s a geologist and she’s a psychotherapist. Tom and Gerri have a stable and happy marriage and a grown son, Joe (Oliver Maltman), an activist lawyer who hasn’t settled down yet, much to his mother’s chagrin. One of Gerri’s co-workers and close friends is Mary (Lesley Manville), who puts up a facade of desperate good cheer despite the fact she’s been very lonely since her husband left her and has been drowning her anxieties in wine. Another Year received its world premiere at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.” (Mark Deming, ALL MOVIE GUIDE)  OFFICIAL SITE

Synopsis for BARNEY’S VERSION: “Barney’s Version is the story of Barney Panofsky, a seemingly ordinary man who lives an extraordinary life. A candid confessional, told from Barney’s point of view, the film spans three decades and two continents, taking us through the different acts of his unusual history. There is his first wife, Clara, a flame-haired, flagrantly unfaithful free sprit with whom Barney briefly lives la vie de Boheme in Rome. The Second Mrs. P. is a wealthy Jewish Princess who shops and talks incessantly, barely noticing that Barney is not listening. And it is at their lavish wedding that Barney meets, and starts pursuing, Miriam, his third wife, the mother of his two children, and his true love. With his father, Izzy as his sidekick, Barney takes us through the many highs, and a few too many lows, of his long and colorful life. Not only does Barney turn out to be a true romantic, he is also capable of all kinds of sneaky acts of gallantry, generosity, and goodness when we – and he – least expect it. His is a gloriously full life, played out on a grand scale. And, at its center stands an unlikely hero – the unforgettable Barney Panofsky.”

This Sunday (Feb. 27) is our Annual OSCAR Screening Party. The show starts at 8:00 (doors open at 7:30) and admission is FREE – first come, first serve. Ballots are now available in our lobby, and prizes are arriving daily (screenplays, soundtracks, dvds, etc.). The big prize – provided by our friends at Square One Salon & Spa – will be a salon gift basket complete with champagne and movie goodies. In addition, our friends at Granola Snacks are donating lots of gourmet granola for the festivities. Join fellow movie lovers as we celebrate the “Cinephile’s Superbowl.” You must be present to win prizes.
Special thanks to the folks at ThinkTV for helping us to get a signal for the telecast!

The International College of Broadcasting & Mike Giannott have rented our theater for a special, one night only screening…complete with multiple shorts, a PSA and their centerpiece film. “ZOMBIE PUNK ATTACK is a short film written, produced and directed by Aaron Cline and Mike Giannott. It’s taken from a comic written by Aaron Cline. It, of course, has a diseased animal, a lab technician that gets bitten and a mad scientist who has the cure – sprinkle that with an all-girl punk band and what could possibly go wrong? Well, a lot. Ride the wave of undead through this tale of death, decay, punk rock and weaponry. It stars Brittany Nagy, Brian Hixon, Paige Beller, Nicki Brooks, Moriah Yux, Sarah Kouse, Nina Lombardo and Marty Velez. Come on out on Tuesday, March 1st 2011, for the World Premier and help support local filmmakers. Tickets are $5.00. There will be a raffle for dvds and the movie poster (signed by the directors and stars).” (taken from press notes)

Tickets for the documentary NORTH DIXIE DRIVE are now on sale. The film will play on Saturday, March 26 at 5:00pm and tickets are $6 each (and only $4 for members of FilmDayton). “North Dixie Drive is the portrait of a small community of businesses and people residing in the Northridge section of Dayton, OH. Both the Dayton Jewish International Film Festival and FilmDayton are gearing up for their annual festivals. In addition, several special events have booked screenings at THE NEON. March, April & May will have numerous opportunities for you to catch films that you otherwise wouldn’t have a chance to see. I’ll keep you posted as details are confirmed.

If you were lucky enough to see Djuna Wahlrab’s short film FALLING UP, don’t miss seeing her set pieces and puppets at the 5th Street Gallery at Stivers School for the Arts. The exhibit opens this Thursday and will run for a month. Call (937)542-7448 for more details.

We’re scheduled to open BIUTIFUL on March 4…so titles may come and go quickly.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan
