Corner Kitchen Shuts Its Doors

June 29, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

After just having reopened with a quick-serve concept earlier this month, the husband and wife owners who opened  Corner Kitchen five years ago have decided against operating during the pandemic and posted this on their Facebook Page today:

It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we write this, but we cannot ignore the situation in which we find ourselves. We are officially closing Corner Kitchen indefinitely.

Throughout the Miami Valley, we have felt so much love and support from the day we opened five years ago. We know that the passion of our hard-working staff provided so many memorable dinners and led to many, many friendships. However, the challenges of the current pandemic and the affect that it has on restaurant businesses has made us analyze the viability of continuing to operate. While we reopened with a change to our concept, we realize that we had to make a departure from what has come to be expected of us and the Corner Kitchen dining experience.

A restaurant operates with a tacit public trust that the top priority is the health and well-being of the guests that they serve and the staff that they employ, and that has always been paramount for us. Neither our new model nor our previous model can survive in this current climate with our expense load and reduction in volume. We simply cannot find a financial model in any iteration of the dozens of scenarios that we have explored without either operating in an unsafe environment or incurring insurmountable debt.

Although this is the hardest decision that we have ever made, it is one that would be irrational to delay or foolish to ignore. Our initial hiatus and reopening planning during stay-at-home provided us with precious time as a family, a challenge for all restaurant owners, and that perspective has also made us rethink and focus on our future at home.

We implore you to continue to support our local, independent restaurants. They need you more than ever.

We shall cherish all of the memories that our community shared with us. We are sorry that we couldn’t do more, and we are utterly heartbroken, we will miss all of you – we will miss the joy that you brought to our lives. Thank you for helping make our dream come true.

With great regret we say goodbye to Corner Kitchen,
Jack and Natalie

We can’t imagine what an agonizing decision this must have been, and we wish the Skilliter family the very best for their future.  A true loss for the Dayton culinary world.

Corner Kitchen to Serve Pre-Hauntfest Brunch

October 25, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

12191590_604152613056002_3185336539768400664_nOctober 29th is Hauntfest in the Oregon District, the annual costumed celebration that closes down  Fifth Street for the festivities.  Because of that, Corner Kitchen, located at the intersection of Fifth and Wayne Streets,  will be closed that evening, but will open up that Saturday for a Pre-Hauntfest Brunch from 11am – 3pm.

Owner Natalie Skilliter was excited to share plans for the day with DMM.  “We LOVE Halloween. The staff is dressing up on Friday, Oct. 28 and for the Brunch on the 29th–it’s a lot of fun.

croque-madame

Croque Madam -a French twist on grilled ham, cheese and egg sandwich.

Last year, the kitchen dressed up as the Village People and broke out in dance to the YMCA. We had an Elvis that serenaded tables as well. It was a hoot!”  We weren’t able to find out if a new group number is planned for this year, but we’re guessing there will be something special planned that is just as entertaining.

In traditional brunch style, the menu will be a mix of breakfast and lunch foods and according to Skilliter, “we’re still working out the details, but I know we’ll have steak & eggs, croque madam, pancakes, burgers and  mussels. Plus, we will have a Bloody Mary bar!”  Expect brunch entrees to be in the $9-$16 range.

Update:  The brunch menu is now online.

Corner Kitchen To Open Tues, July 21st

July 14, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

11390018_565227190281878_5980097416459290632_nIt’s been a long time coming, but as of next week the Corner Kitchen will open it’s doors on the corner of 5th & Wayne in the Oregon District.  We revealed the name and plans for this eatery last October.  The remodeling of this former nightclub took a while, since it had never had a kitchen in the space.  Due to the make up of the building, the venting of the kitchen hood meant the work couldn’t get done over the winter, and owners Jack and Natalie Skilliter had to wait until this spring to get the kitchen work done.

Chef Jack describes Corner Kitchen “as a ‘finer diner. We intend to provide our guests with mouthwatering updates on many familiar classics. Corner Kitchen will bring a warm spirit to Dayton, a relaxed mood and affordable, farm-fresh food.  We will feature delicious food prepared with love and entirely from scratch and our flavors and our service will be exceptional.”  While Chef Jack handles the kitchen, Natalie’s years of experience in the front of the house should give the new restaurant the smooth service needed for success.

MostMetro breaks the news:  Natalie and Jack Skilliter are pleased to announce that their planned restaurant at 613 East Fifth Street in the Oregon District will be called, “Corner Kitchen.”

“While we are still a few months away from opening, plans are proceeding. We are describing ‘Corner Kitchen’ as a ‘finer diner’,” said Jack Skilliter, chef of Corner Kitchen. “We intend to provide our guests with mouthwatering updates on many familiar classics. Corner Kitchen will bring a warm spirit to Dayton, a relaxed mood and affordable, farm-fresh food.”

“Our name represents the essence of who we are and what we do,” explained Natalie Skilliter, owner of Corner Kitchen and vice president of vellaINC public relations. “The restaurant will be located on the corner of Fifth and Wayne in the Oregon District and, inside, the ‘kitchen’ will be open and in the middle of the restaurant; thus the name, ‘Corner Kitchen.’ It’s pretty simple. We will feature delicious food prepared with love and entirely from scratch and our flavors and our service will be exceptional.”

In addition, the Skilliters have been asked to provide a sampling from their planned menu in the Red Ribbon Lounge this year at Masquerage, the AIDS Resource Center Ohio’s signature event.10636118_693805324034045_4529655997660336030_n-1

AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio) is Ohio’s premier nonprofit provider of a comprehensive and coordinated response to HIV/AIDS, from prevention to diagnosis and treatment. With an atmosphere that sizzles, non-stop entertainment that takes your breath away, delicious food, and heart-pumping music to keep your body moving all night long, Masquerage is one event NOT to be missed! Tickets are still available for the October 18 event and can be purchased at www.masquerage.org.

Event Producer Lisa Grigsby shares, “We are thrilled to be able to debut  Corner Kitchen to our Red Ribbon Lounge guests. Being able to offer our VIP’s an exclusive first taste of this new eatery is exactly the kind of thing that makes Masquerage Dayton’s Party of Parties!”

“We are honored to be asked to participate in Masquerage this year,” said Skilliter. “It is the most fun event in Dayton with proceeds going to an important organization, ARC.”
