GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL Opens Exclusively at THE NEON

Hello Everyone,

We’re very excited about this weekend. Wes Anderson’s new film has been breaking box office records across the country, and now THE NEON gets to have the local exclusive opening of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Many people in the Miami Valley have been eagerly anticipating this movie (including almost everyone at THE NEON), and we’re looking forward to our “Wes Anderson Fan Screening” on Thursday night at 8:00. (Regular ticket prices apply, and tickets are still available…with several fun prizes in store.) If you can’t make it Thursday, never fear…we’re dedicating both screens to this film for its first week.

“Lion Apparel invites all area Firefighters & their friends to come to THE NEON to see the documentary BURN…’One year on the front lines of the battle to save Detroit.’ BURN is an award-winning, action-packed film that takes you closer than you’ve ever been, capturing a year in the lives of Detroit firefighters who are charged with the thankless task of saving a city that many have written off as dead. There will be 2 screenings – Tuesday April 1st and Wednesday April 2nd. Each screening starts at 7:30. Minimum $5 donation payable at the door. The TAB Entertainment has rented one of our auditoriums on Sunday, April 13 for a special, one-time screening of MY DREAM BESIDE ME. “MY DREAM BESIDE ME is a romantic dramedy based on the true love story of Paul Rich and Mary Kay Slesinger Rich. At 84 years young Paul lost his wife of 66 years – Mary Kay was married for 34 years and she was left a widow when she was in her mid 60’s. After a few years Paul and Mary Kay met and fell in love. ELAINE STRITCH Documentary At THE NEON and Wes Anderson News!

Hello Everyone,

OK. I’ll admit it. I’m biased. I simply adore Elaine Stritch. I’ve seen her perform twice (her cabaret act at The Carlyle and in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC on Broadway), and I can’t wait to see the new documentary which opens Friday (March 14) at THE NEON. That said, we’re not bringing the film just because I love her. ELAINE STRITCH: SHOOT ME is currently rated “100% Fresh” on rottentomatoes.com. That score almost never happens!

In addition to the new film, we will hold OMAR, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, and THE GREAT BEAUTY for limited shows for one more week.

On Thursday, March 6 at 7:30, the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National MS Society will host a screening of WHEN I WALK. “In 2006, 25-year-old Jason DaSilva was on vacation at the beach with family when, suddenly, he fell down. He couldn’t get back up. His legs had stopped working; his disease could no longer be ignored. Just a few months earlier doctors had told him that he had multiple sclerosis…Jason tried exercise to help cope, but the problem only worsened. After his dispiriting fall on the beach, he turned to his Mom, who reminded him that, despite his disease, he was still a fortunate kid who had the opportunity to pursue the things he loved most: art and filmmaking. We’re ready for you this Sunday! THE NEON’s Annual Oscar Party has been a success for more than a decade, and we’re excited that ThinkTV has once again agreed to help us get a signal for the broadcast. On Sunday, March 2, seating will begin as close to 7pm as possible (which is when the pre-show begins). Ballots for guessing the winners are now available in our lobby…and must be turned in before the first award is given (guests must be present during our party to be eligible for prizes). Prizes will be given throughout the evening for correct guesses…and the Grand Prize – “The Star Treatment” (courtesy of Square One Salon & Spa and THE NEON) – will go to the person with the most correct guesses. This party is FREE and YOU are Invited! Come in anytime on Sunday, March 2 to turn in your ballot. Upon turning in a ballot (one per person), you will be given a number – which will result in the seating priority later that night.

Ralph Fiennes’ INVISIBLE WOMAN Opens Friday at THE NEON

It’s time to start moving along at THE NEON. If you still need to see AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, tomorrow (Thursday) will be its last day with us. The Coen Brothers’ INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS will stick around for another week, and on Friday we’ll open the new film directed by (and starring) Ralph Fiennes – THE INVISIBLE WOMAN. Fans of THE NEON have requested a special screening of a fantasy film called KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM (a films about Live Action Role Playing starring Peter Dinklage and Steve Zahn). They worked with Tugg to see if there was enough interest in screening the film in Dayton…and the required reservations crossed the threshold. 2 Hits Led To THE NEON’s Best Weekend Ever!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! We just had our best weekend ever!!

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY performed wonderfully – with several sold-out screenings over the weekend. INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS also did quite well. I’m pretty certain that both films will stick around for a couple more weeks…but we do have other exciting films down the road.

Fans of THE NEON have requested a special screening of a fantasy film called KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM (a films about Live Action Role Playing starring Peter Dinklage and Steve Zahn). They worked with Tugg to see if there was enough interest in screening the film in Dayton…and the required reservations just crossed the threshold. Word of mouth continues to be amazing for PHILOMENA. In fact, both PHILOMENA and NEBRASKA saw spikes in attendance over the weekend. That said, we still want to move forward with BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR before we get busy with 2 huge titles on January 10. Word of mouth has been great for both of our current films. Ticket sales at THE NEON are above national averages for both titles, and that’s pretty great news! Thanks for all of your help in telling your friends and family about what we’re playing…word of mouth is one of our best marketing tools!

Big Date Changes – Coen Brothers Added to Upcoming NEON Engagements!

Hello Everyone,

Once again, big changes are happening to our upcoming release dates. It was determined yesterday (by “the powers that be”) that MANDELA won’t open after all at THE NEON. We’re quite disappointed by this, but the decision is out of our hands. That said, we’re glad that we will be able to open two smaller gems between now and our next big titles on January 10. On Dec. 27, we plan to open KILL YOUR DARLINGS – a story about the early life of poet Allen Ginsberg (a brave choice for actor Daniel Radcliffe of the HARRY POTTER films). On Jan. 3, we plan to open BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR – the French sensation that is garnering numerous awards and lots of attention around the world. Then on January 10 – a potentially huge day for us – we are slated to open AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY as well as the new Coen Brothers film (we’re delighted about this) – INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS.

This will more than likely be the final week for PHILOMENA – so hurry down if you still need to see this wonderful film (or if you need to see it again). NEBRASKA opened quite well this weekend, so we think it will stick around for a couple weeks. Click on either title above to visit that film’s official site. This year’s Family Holiday Film Series is already coming to a close! Tickets are FREE for children 12 and under, and all other tickets are $2 each. The final film – the holiday classic WHITE CHRISTMAS – will only screen this Saturday at Noon. Tickets will be available starting 45 minutes before the show.

An additional encore screening of THE TRIUMPH has been set for Monday, December 23 at 7:30. Alexander Payne’s NEBRASKA – Starring Bruce Dern – Opens Friday at THE NEON!

Distributors are playing with opening dates like crazy. Sometimes it works to our advantage, and sometimes it really changes everything. We got news on both sides of that fence today! Though AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY has now moved into January, I’m delighted to announce that we will open Alexander Payne’s new film NEBRASKA this Friday. In addition, it looks like we’ll now be able to open MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM on Dec. 25.

If you still need to see DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, Thursday will be your last chance to catch it at THE NEON. PHILOMENA, which has had spectacular word-of-mouth business, will stick around.

Synopsis for NEBRASKA: “After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a cantankerous father (Bruce Dern) thinks he’s struck it rich, and wrangles his son (Will Forte) into taking a road trip to claim the fortune. PHILOMENA and DALLAS BUYERS CLUB Are Hits at THE NEON!

Hello Everyone,

For the second week in a row – Wow!! We had one of our best Thanksgiving Weekends ever at THE NEON! Audiences are loving both DALLAS BUYERS CLUB and PHILOMENA, and I want to Thank YOU for being such loyal and wonderful patrons at THE NEON. Even though other theaters jumped in on PHILOMENA, you made us come out on top! Thank You! Though we are doing well with our current titles, I’d suggest hurrying down if you still need to see them. We have other titles we need to get to before the end of the year – including Alexander Payne’s new film NEBRASKA and the star-studded AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY.

This year’s Family Holiday Film Series starts this Saturday! Tickets are FREE for children 12 and under, and all other tickets are $2 each. We will screen RISE OF THE GUARDIANS on December 7, on December 14 we will screen HOME ALONE, and on December 21 – the holiday classic – WHITE CHRISTMAS. Each film will only screen one time – at Noon. Tickets will only be available starting 45 minutes before each show.

Dayton-native Toni Dixon will premiere her new short film on Sunday, December 15 at 7:30. “FROM HIDDEN PAIN TO FREEDOM is an emotional depiction of the life of Tia. It is a powerful story of survival against all odds – the story of a little girl caught up in a world of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. The setting takes place in the inner-city projects of Ohio where Tia resides with her grandmother because her mother chose the company of men over family. There, she quickly realizes how cold and cruel the world can really be. We had an absolutely incredible weekend. Many, many thanks to all of you who chose to come to THE NEON to support 12 YEARS A SLAVE. This spectacular film will certainly stick around. In addition, we will open ALL IS LOST – the new, highly-acclaimed film starring Robert Redford. ALL IS LOST will be a short run (please hurry down if you’d like to see it)…we are still planning to open DALLAS BUYERS CLUB on Nov. 22. Tonight’s screening of THE TRIUMPH is sold out, but an encore screening has been set for Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7:30. The local, faith-based non-profit hosting this screening is delighted that the demand for these tickets is so high. “THE TRIUMPH is a powerful new documentary film about our Blessed Mother’s apparitions in Medjugorje. On June 25, 1981, in the mountain village of Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina, Our Lady appeared to six children. 12 YEARS A SLAVE & HOW I LIVE NOW at THE NEON!

Hello Everyone,

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard of 12 YEARS A SLAVE. This was one of the 32 films I saw in Toronto this Fall, and I immediately knew that a classic had been born. I wasn’t alone. The film went on to win “The People’s Choice Award” – the biggest prize at The Toronto International Film Festival. In addition, the film has received 100% reviews from THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, NPR, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, ROLLING STONE, and many more. 12 YEARS A SLAVE will certainly be nominated for “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards (and will likely win), so we hope you’ll hurry to see it with us!

In addition, we will open a new film that I have not yet seen. HOW I LIVE NOW stars Saoirse Ronan (from ATONEMENT) and was directed by Kevin Macdonald (director of LAST KING OF SCOTLAND and MARLEY). I like everyone involved, so I’m anxious to see it.

If you still need to see HANNAH ARENDT or ENOUGH SAID, Thursday will be your last chance to catch them at THE NEON. IN A WORLD, the comedy that audiences are loving, will stick around for one screening a day over the weekend.

Synopsis for 12 YEARS A SLAVE: “12 YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. If you haven’t seen the wonderful film WADJDA, you only have until Thursday to catch it at THE NEON. In addition, INEQUALITY FOR ALL is also heading out. On Friday, we will begin 2 new films – the thoughtful and charged biopic HANNAH ARENDT and the hilarious comedy (which was the sold-out, opening night film at this year’s FilmDayton Festivao) IN A WORLD.

Synopsis for HANNAH ARENDT: “The sublime Barbara Sukowa reteams with director Margarethe von Trotta for her brilliant new biopic of influential German-Jewish philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt. On Friday of next week, we will open 2 new films. The first is one of the most anticipated films of the year – 12 YEARS A SLAVE. This film will certainly be nominated (and likely win) “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards…it is absolutely incredible! In addition, we will open HOW I LIVE NOW (from the director of THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND) – a film about an American girl on holiday in the UK who finds herself fighting to survive as the British Empire becomes a military state. Several other great films are just down the road – like the fantastic film PHILOMENA. We hope to see you often over the next several weeks.
