WADJDA Opens Friday at THE NEON + Special Event News!

Hello Everyone,

I know many of you are excited to see Robert Redford’s new film ALL IS LOST. Unfortunately, the distributor decided to make some drastic, last-minute changes. Instead of opening on 350 screens across the USA this weekend, they’re only opening on 75…and we didn’t make the cut. We hope they’ll make the film available to us in the near future, but we’ll have to wait and see how their new proposed date works with our other bookings.

Regardless, we are moving forward this Friday with a special film that is currently at a 99% approval rating on Rottentomatoes.com – WADJDA.

Synopsis for WADJDA: “WADJDA is a movie of firsts. This first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia is the story of a young girl living in a suburb of Riyadh determined to raise enough money to buy a bike in a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue. Even more impressive, WADJDA is the first feature film made by a female Saudi filmmaker. A local faith-based non-profit is hosting a screening of the new documentary THE TRIUMPH on Wednesday, November 13 at 7:30. “THE TRIUMPH is a powerful new documentary film about our Blessed Mother’s apparitions in Medjugorje. On June 25, 1981, in the mountain village of Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina, Our Lady appeared to six children. She identified herself as the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, and continues to appear to several of the visionaries even today. 8th Annual LGBT Film Festival – The Full Line-Up & Visiting Filmmaker News!

Festival Passes have sold out, but single tickets remain for The 8th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Festival – scheduled for Oct. 11, 12 & 13 at THE NEON in Downtown Dayton.

The exciting weekend will kick off on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 with G.B.F. – sponsored by Square One Salon & Spa. From the maker of JAWBREAKER comes another hysterical satire of high school clique culture – this time focusing on the latest fashion accessory – the G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend). Attendees will be invited to the Opening Night Party at CADC on the corner of East 4th and St. Clair – where they’ll be greeted with complimentary appetizers from Roost Modern Italian and live music by Sandy & Michael Bashaw. The opening night party is sponsored by Sue Spiegel and Lisa Hanauer.

On Saturday, the films will continue at 1:00 with BRIDEGROOM – sponsored by PFLAG Dayton. This touching documentary recounts a romance between a young couple…and how one man was forbidden from attending the funeral of his lover. REACHING FOR THE MOON, a beautiful period piece, chronicles the long-lasting love affair between poet Elizabeth Bishop and architect Lota de Macedo Soares. This film has won numerous audience awards and has played at prestigious film festivals around the world. It is sponsored by The Greater Dayton LGBT Center and starts at 7:15 on Saturday evening.

Later on Saturday night, the festival will play a fresh and fun documentary about the cult legend and John Waters favorite – I AM DIVINE. Sponsored by MJ’s Café & Johnny, this film will begin at 9:45.

On Sunday afternoon, the festival will continue with THE NEW BLACK at 3:00. This film, sponsored by The Miami Valley Fair Housing Association, tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights…and it has a local connection. The closing film – THE HAPPY SAD – will screen on Sunday, October 13 at 5:15. In the age of polyamory and blurred lines of sexuality, what really makes for a happy relationship? Two young couples in New York – one black and gay, one white and heterosexual – find themselves intertwined as they create new relationship norms, explore sexual identity, and redefine monogamy in this captivating new film directed by Rodney Evens (Brother to Brother). Sponsored by Marion’s Piazza, this wonderful film has been playing at film festivals all summer.

In addition to a line-up of critically acclaimed new films from across the country and around the world, this year’s movie-goers will be treated introductions and Q&A’s from at least two visiting filmmakers.

Darren Stein, director of the Opening Night Film G.B.F., will be flying in from Los Angeles. Last week, G.B.F. screened in Atlanta, and he’ll be off to Austin after the Dayton premiere. In addition to film and television work in California, one of Stein’s well-known films, JAWBREAKER, is currently being turned into a musical in NYC.

Guy Shalem, the award-winning director of the short film SOMETHING REAL, will also attend the festival. SOMETHING REAL is a celebrity packed short with a musical twist about today’s contemporary bar scene. The film marks Shalem’s first collaboration with Tony award winning composer and lyricist Jeff Marx (AVENUE Q) and 5-time Grammy-award winning producer, composer and lyricist, Mervyn Warren. Shalem has heard great things about the film community in Dayton, and he’s excited to get to town.

The festival encourages film lovers from around the Miami Valley to support these strong films.

On Friday, we will open 3 new films. First of all, we’ll open one of the best reviewed comedies of the year – a film I really like – ENOUGH SAID. Directed by Nicole Holofcener, this film is smart, funny & touching, and it has two incredible central performances by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini. In addition, Francophiles will rejoice for our one-week engagement of 2 French films – POPULAIRE and HAUTE CUISINE (and foodies will certainly want to see the latter).

THE WATCHER’S REVELATION will screen October 24 at 7:30 and 9:45. “Is a race of benign extraterrestrials secretly influencing the world’s governments? Are these creatures really ancient aliens sent to protect humanity from self-destruction, or are they evil beings set on deception as the world approaches its final days?…This faith-based, science fiction film was made by lifepointe church in Dayton, OH, featuring a cast and crew of local talent who worked for an occasional pizza and the love of film. AUSTENLAND Opens at THE NEON + New Event News!

I’m back from Toronto, and I had a wonderful time. The film culture in Toronto – especially with the addition of the TIFF Bell Lightbox and their year-round programming – is phenomenal. In all, I saw 32 films at this year’s festival (out of 300+ options), and I met some great people. Now it’s back to focusing on Dayton’s film culture! There are some fun announcements below.

This Friday, we will open a new romantic comedy based on the popular novel – AUSTENLAND. On our other screen, we will hold BLUE JASMINE and BLACKFISH for one more week…in addition to an encore screening of The Big Lens Film Festival. Due to the previous SOLD-OUT screenings, WSU’s Annual Big Lens Film Festival is returning to THE NEON for one more night. “The 21st Annual Big Lens Film Festival will play Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 at the THE NEON…Every year, Big Lens screens a selection of the very best short films to come from the Wright State University Motion Picture program, and this year is no different! Ranging from documentary to narrative, these six films cover a wide variety of subjects and emotions. Tickets, just $7 each, are now available at THE NEON. THE SPECTACULAR NOW Opens & BLUE JASMINE Continues at THE NEON!

Wow! What an incredible weekend! FilmDayton had some nice crowds over the weekend (their line-up was awesome), and BLUE JASMINE became one of our biggest openings of the year! Many thanks to all of you who came out. We were busy, and it felt great!

If you still need to see THE WAY WAY BACK, you only have a couple more days. In addition, I hope many of you will come down for our special 4-day engagement of IN THE HOUSE – one of my absolute favorite films of the year (only a few people turned out on Monday). While BLUE JASMINE will certainly stick around, we have another hot, new film opening this weekend – THE SPECTACULAR NOW. I’m sad to announce that THE NEON has lost a good friend. Harish Trivedi of The India Foundation passed away earlier this month. He was such a lover of film, and he provided the community with a wealth of knowledge and passion for Indian cinema. He was a great collaborator, and his spirit and drive were infectious. He will be greatly missed.

Unfortunately, Saturday’s screening of SALMA has been cancelled. We hope it will be rescheduled for a future event, but no further details are available at this time.

Hello Everyone,

We’ve got so much happening over the next week…I’m absolutely certain that there is something for everyone at THE NEON! In addition to FilmDayton‘s great line-up (including gems like IN A WORLD, SHORT TERM 12 and REMOTE AREA MEDICAL), we will open one of the most talked about indies of the year – Woody Allen’s BLUE JASMINE (featuring one of the most outstanding performances of Cate Blanchett’s incredible career). I’M SO EXCITED – Almodovar’s Latest & BIG LENS News at THE NEON!

Hello Everyone,

Tomorrow (Fri, Aug 16), we will open the new film from my favorite director Pedro Almodovar – I’M SO EXCITED. This film is a return to the tone of his earlier work. It’s a sex farce that’s more in the vein of WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN than ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, but it’s certainly not without social commentary. Even though Almodovar’s work runs the gamut in regards to stories and themes, you can always tell his work by the incredible design and color palette.

Synopsis for I’M SO EXCITED: “A very varied group of people are in a precarious situation aboard a plane flying to Mexico City. A technical failure (a kind of justifiable negligence, even though it sounds contradictory, but that’s what human actions are) has endangered the lives of the passengers on Peninsula Flight 2549. The pilots, hardened, experienced professionals are striving, along with their colleagues in the Control Center, to find a solution. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. And speaking of FilmDayton, WSU’s Annual Big Lens Film Festival will kick off the festival this year. “The 21st Annual Big Lens Film Festival will premiere on Thursday, August 22nd at the THE NEON…Every year, Big Lens screens a selection of the very best short films to come from the Wright State University Motion Picture program, and this year is no different! Ranging from documentary to narrative, these six films cover a wide variety of subjects and emotions. There will be two screenings shown concurrently, one at 7:30pm and one at 8:00. Following the screenings, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers, emceed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Julia Reichert. Tickets to either screening are $7 each, and are now available at THE NEON. The India Foundation is also gearing up for another special screening. “When Salma, a young Muslim girl in a south Indian village, was 13 years old, her family locked her up for 25 years, forbidding her to study and forcing her into marriage. During that time, words were Salma’s salvation. She began covertly composing poems on scraps of paper and, through an intricate system, was able to sneak them out of the house, eventually getting them into the hands of a publisher. Against the odds, Salma became the most famous Tamil poet: the first step to discovering her own freedom and challenging the traditions and code of conduct in her village.” The India Foundation Celebrates One Hundred Years of Indian Cinema with this month’s selection – SALMA – the critically acclaimed documentary by Kim Longinotto – Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 12 noon. This is the first public screening in Ohio and outside the festival circuit!

FILL THE VOID Opening at THE NEON!

We’re moving along this week. On Friday (Aug. 9), we will open a lovely new Israeli film called FILL THE VOID.

Synopsis for FILL THE VOID: “Fill the Void tells the story of an Orthodox Hassidic family from Tel Aviv. Eighteen-year-old Shira is the youngest daughter of the family. She is about to be married off to a promising young man of the same age and background. It is a dream-come-true, and Shira feels prepared and excited. On Purim, her twenty-eight-year-old sister, Esther, dies while giving birth to her first child. The pain and grief that overwhelm the family postpone Shira’s promised match…When the girls’ mother finds out that Yochay may leave the country with her only grandchild, she proposes a match between Shira and the widower. Shira will have to choose between her heart’s wish and her family duty.” Peter Rainer of The Christian Science Monitor wrote, “The sheer force of artistry has the power to convert outsiders into insiders. “Roger Brown — the greatest basketball player Dayton has ever known — will be inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame on Sept. 8. Without the love and sacrifice of 84-year-old Daytonian Arlena Smith, it wouldn’t be happening. Join us at THE NEON on Aug. 15 at 7:30 for a benefit screening of the acclaimed documentary UNDEFEATED: THE ROGER BROWN STORY, with all proceeds going toward Arlena Smith’s trip to Springfield, Mass., for Brown’s Hall of Fame induction. Arlena and her late husband Azariah could not have children of their own, so they regularly welcomed troubled teenagers into their modest West Side home. One of those was Roger Brown. Among the greatest young basketball players in New York City history, Brown in 1961 had been unfairly implicated in a gambling scandal just as he was finishing his freshman year at the University of Dayton. Though never charged with a crime, he was kicked out of school and banned for life by the NBA. The Smiths came to the rescue. They opened up their home, found Brown a job, gave him the strength to move on. And finally, Brown bloomed anew. In 1967, he became the first player of the ABA’s Indiana Pacers. He led them to three championships, and became an Indianapolis City Councilman. We’re moving right along at THE NEON. Though we’re holding both of our current attractions (BEFORE MIDNIGHT and THE EAST), we also had room to open a new romantic comedy that I saw at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival – LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED. On Saturday, July 6, THE NEON will host the premiere of Meladi McNair’s new film THE OMISSION. “Marissa tries to hide from her friends that she is in an unfortunate, yet common situation that afflicts many young adults. A violent, controlling relationship. Three flashbacks paint her birthday bash as the platform for a series of unfortunate events in which five long-time friends learn of her situation, and turn on each other… THE OMISSION, a dark, abuse awareness film debuts at 3 pm on July 6. The film was written and directed by Dayton’s own Meladi McNair; a Journalist and social-conscious author, artist and filmmaker. There’s another potential Gathr screening on the horizon. Once again, 50 tickets need to be reserved in order for the screening to be locked down. The movie is BACK TO 1942, and it’s an epic film set during a drought in China’s Henan province in 1942. The tentative screening is scheduled for July 17 at 7:30. There’s only about a week left to reserve a ticket in order to secure the screening…and right now, it doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen. AMOUR and QUARTET Continue Successful Runs at THE NEON!

Thank you! We had another great weekend. We truly appreciate your patronage and all the good word-of-mouth recommendations you’ve been giving regarding our films. QUARTET continues to be a big hit for us – it will stick around. Though numbers for the Oscar-winning AMOUR have fallen, it will stay for one more week (hurry down if you need to see it…many of our patrons agree that Emmanuelle Riva should have taken home the Oscar this Sunday). On Thursday (Valentine’s Day) we’ll begin our exclusive engagement of QUARTET (which I’m certain will delight so many of you). “On February 23 at Noon, the Junior Leaguers of Dayton – an African American Women’s Service Organization – will hold an annual fundraiser which raises money for scholarships. They will screen the film RED HOOK SUMMER (directed by Spike Lee with James McBride as co-writer) – a coming of age movie about a young African American male who visits his grandparents living in the projects of Brooklyn New York. Between these 15 films, there are 34 nominations. We hope you’ll make plans to spend this fun night with us. We will begin seating for this party as close to 7pm as possible…which is when the Red-Carpet pre-show begins. “Intense but amazing” was how a group of my friends described RUST AND BONE after seeing it on Sunday evening. Alas, not enough Daytonians came to see the film…so it won’t be sticking around for a second week. Thursday will be your last chance to see RUST AND BONE at THE NEON. On Friday, we will begin a one-week engagement of the Oscar nominated period drama A ROYAL AFFAIR. We will also present a few screenings of Oscar-nominated animation and live action short films over the weekend. This is the first time we’ve offered Oscar shorts (though a handful have played at festivals over the years)…if there’s enough interest, we’ll look to make it an annual engagement.

A very brief description of the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS: Each year during the Oscars, the makers of exceptional short films are recognized for their work. We often hear our audiences saying “How do people see these films?” Until now, festivals were one of the only outlets for seeing these gems. Though I still encourage you to support the Dayton-based film festivals (where only a handful of great films are selected out of hundreds of possibilities) we’re now offering you a chance to see this year’s nominees.
