Most are sweet with a fruitty finish, again due to the Ohio grapes.

For the second week in a row – Wow!! We had one of our best Thanksgiving Weekends ever at THE NEON! Audiences are loving both DALLAS BUYERS CLUB and  PHILOMENA, and I want to Thank YOU for being such loyal and wonderful patrons at THE NEON. Even though other theaters jumped in on PHILOMENA, you made us come out on top! Though we are doing well with our current titles, I’d suggest hurrying down if you still need to see them.  We have other titles we need to get to before the end of the year – including Alexander Payne’s new film NEBRASKA and the star-studded AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY.

This year’s Family Holiday Film Series starts this Saturday! Tickets are FREE for children 12 and under, and all other tickets are $2 each. We will screen RISE OF THE GUARDIANS on December 7, on December 14 we will screen HOME ALONE, and on December 21 – the holiday classic – WHITE CHRISTMAS. Each film will only screen one time – at Noon. Tickets will only be available starting 45 minutes before each show.

Dayton-native Toni Dixon will premiere her new short film on Sunday, December 15 at 7:30. “FROM HIDDEN PAIN TO FREEDOM is an emotional depiction of the life of Tia. It is a powerful story of survival against all odds – the story of a little girl caught up in a world of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. The setting takes place in the inner-city projects of Ohio where Tia resides with her grandmother because her mother chose the company of men over family. There, she quickly realizes how cold and cruel the world can really be. Gaining strength from within, she grows up to overcome her pain to new found freedom.” (taken from Press Notes) Tickets are $10 each and are now available at THE NEON’s box office.

Downtown Dayton: The Hub of Holiday Spirit

The month-long Dayton Holiday Festival begins Nov. 29 with the Grande Illumination and Dayton Children’s Parade Spectacular in Lights from 4 to 9 p.m. on Courthouse Square, on the corner of Third and Main streets. The tree-lighting ceremony will start at 7:45 p.m. with the parade immediately following. Holiday events will continue into late December. This will be the 41st year for the holiday celebration.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving beginning at 4 p.m., an array of family-friendly activities will be available to enjoy all evening. Activities on Courthouse Square include live music on the Courthouse Square Main Stage, sponsored by Kroger, until 7:45 p.m. In the Old Courthouse, the Downtown Dayton Priority Board and B94.5 Hot Country‘s Gingerbread Homes for the Holidays Contest entries will be on display. Winners will be announced during the evening. Children can participate in the Junior League of Dayton’s Holiday Hunt by checking in at the Junior League booth. The scavenger hunt runs until 7 p.m.

Several other activities will take place near the Square. Children can create holiday crafts or “Dial-An-Elf” to share their wish list with one of Santa’s helpers at Time Warner Cable Media’s Holiday Village in the Kettering Tower. Carnival rides and games on Third Street, sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, will run all evening. Horse-drawn wagon rides will be offered through 7:30 p.m. Wagon rides are $1 per person, but all other activities are free.

The Tike’s Shoppe — sponsored by ABC 22/FOX 45, Victoria Theatre Association and the Oakwood Register and managed by YES! For Youth — will be located in the Schuster Center Wintergarden. This gift shop specifically designed for children will remain open through Dec. 23 on select days. Patrons also may view Rike’s animated holiday windows in the Wintergarden.

Capping off this festive night is the tree-lighting ceremony at 7:45 p.m. on Courthouse Square. Volunteers will pass out 3D glasses provided by CareSource. The Dayton Children’s Parade Spectacular in Lights will immediately follow the ceremony. More than 100,000 lights will illuminate the 45-minute parade, which will feature a variety of festive floats, entertainers, animals and several surprises. Miami-Jacobs Career College and MIX 107.7-FM are sponsoring the activities.

“The Grande Illumination and Dayton Children’s Parade Spectacular in Lights is a great night for the entire family to come downtown,” said Sandy Gudorf, president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership. “It is a magical night guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit.”

The Dayton Holiday Festival continues throughout the month of December with such activities as the Family Movie Series at The Neon, Virginia Kettering’s Holiday Train Display and more.

With so much going on in this place, we offer up our suggestions on some of the best.  As with all of our Food Adventures, we have been here numerous times and tried almost everything on the menu.

If you have not yet been to Archer’s, let Big Ragu, Chef House and Hungry Jax point you in the right direction.

MUST EATS:

— THE BRANDON BURGER:  This burger is a favorite.  It features a fried egg and bacon all on top of a fresh Zink’s Meat Market Burger.  It is quite simply one of the best burgers in town.

— ARCHER’S ALE:  An ESB (Extra Special Bitter), that is an original craft beer.  A quality brew to be appreciated by the beer connoisseur in you.  Smooth and easy, this is an enjoyable drink for those ESB lovers.

— CITRUS CHICKEN SALAD – Grilled chicken on a bed of fresh greens, mixed with a balsamic dressing.   Other toppings include mandarin oranges, cranberries, bleu cheese crumbles and almonds.  A healthy and tasty alternative!

—  THE MARGHERITA PIZZA:  Fresh Mozzarella and a smooth tomato sauce is the key to this pizza.  Fresh basil leaves and Roma tomatoes top off this vegetarian pie nicely.

— THE PHILLY CHEESESTEAK: A heaping sandwich filled with meat, peppers and melted provolone cheese.  You can also request cheese whiz on this monster.  We say, go for it.  This is how they do it in Philadelphia.  Your choice of ribeye steak or chicken for the meat.

— THE STICKY BURGER:  A burger with peanut butter on it? YES!  The result is a unique taste, reminiscent of a Thai Peanut Sauce.   This burger is the Big Ragu’s Favorite.  It also comes with bacon and smoked pepper jack cheese.  This is a curiously good burger that you won’t soon forget.

— CRAZY UNCLE JESTER’S HOT SAUCE:  Archer’s is partnered with a local hot sauce maker that really lights things up.  Make sure and ask your waitress to bring out some different flavored bottles of Crazy Uncle Jester’s Hot Sauce.   Add it to some wings, chili or whatever you want to pack a wallop of flavor.  Good stuff here, some of it isn’t for the squeamish.

Finally, this article would be incomplete if we didn’t talk about the servers.  Our many experiences have shown us that this friendly staff cares about the customers and shows commitment in offering good service.  The management instills this belief from the top down.  If you love decent prices for good food, then give Archer’s Tavern a shot.  This place is about relaxing in a fun eatery.  Our advice is, scan the beer selection, order a burger or one of our  ‘must eats’  and then… enjoy.   In  this Food Adventure, you can be sure that Archer’s will hit the bullseye !

Imagination and Collaboration

Theatre at its very essence is collaboration: designers and directors; directors, production team, and actors; artistic and front of house staff; and numerous other people all work together to create art. However, we don’t have to limit collaboration to simply what can be done within a single theatre. Rather, collaborating between theatre groups, working together to put on a show or teach classes or read plays, can greatly expand both audiences and participants.

This weekend, the Zoot Theatre Company and Town Hall Theatre are doing just that in their production of The Phantom Tollbooth. In the story based on Norton Juster’s 1961 classic, young Milo is bored with everything from his toy collection to his life, so extremely that the Demons of Ignorance eagerly wait for him to succumb and urge him not to do anything at all (for that would be dangerous). However, with the arrival of an anonymous package and his entry into the fantastical Phantom Tollbooth, he discovers a new world and embarks on a remarkable journey to save the Kingdom of Wisdom. A funny and entertaining show for all ages, The Phantom Tollbooth is filled with puns and plot elements, such as Milo’s sudden Jump to (the Island of) Conclusions, that are the consequences of interpreting idioms literally.

Because of the combination of familial and fantastical elements, this show perfectly showcases the expertise of both the Dayton-based Zoot Theatre Company, which focuses on puppet work, and Centerville’s Town Hall Theatre, a professional and quality-driven children’s theatre. ZTC and THT have collaborated equally on a production annually for the past four years; they usually share artistic responsibilities, and selected this show together. This piece is different in that due to the nature and schedule of this piece, ZTC directed and artistically formed The Phantom Tollbooth, while THT handled all the front of house, publicity, and related areas. However, several students and Town Hall regular actors play the childrens’ roles, including the lead of Milo, making this production a successful model of collaboration between two groups, and providing both patron bases with opportunities beyond what either theatre could do alone.

Working together benefits both theatres. Mark Metzger, Artistic Director at Town Hall Theatre, remarked,

“I look for opportunities for our young people to be challenged, and to operate a puppet and receive feedback from professional puppeteers is an opportunity they won’t get anywhere else.”

Working on a production where the puppets take center stage, and other production elements (set, lighting, costumes) support the puppetry, is a great learning experience for student participants and audience members. This is especially beneficial given the prevalence of shows on Broadway – such as The Lion King, Avenue Q, Shrek, and WarHorse – that incorporate similar techniques.

Even if puppet-based shows were not experiencing such popularity, though, because plays are meant to be seen, not just heard, the addition of such a predominant visual element teaches skills applicable to all theatre, and collaborations such as this benefit both organizations. Metzger commented on Zoot’s talent and ability to produce quality theatre, so he had no reservations whatsoever about doing a project where THT’s own artistic involvement was minimized, knowing that the show would be excellent for both theatres.

As a traveling-based rather than single-venue theatre, Zoot finds collaboration extremely important. Working with Town Hall allows them the chance to perform in another space and with a different patron base; they also do a lot of work within schools and help area theaters with puppet-based work when needed, and even within specific shows, place a high emphasis on collaboration.  For example, in describing the process through which the theatre designs and creates puppets, Zoot’s Artistic Director Tristan Cupp explained that various artistic staff design, sometimes originating with group discussions and sometimes with a focal designer’s vision, all the while working with the director to make puppets that align with the characters’ and show’s needs. These different processes, and Zoot’s production skills, are very collaborative. Cupp said,

“What’s wonderful is each one of these artists has strengths in different mediums and different styles, which really lends to the variety of puppets and looks and different ideas… You can expand your creative horizons that way, by learning from each other and learning to use different materials and different styles; that’s what’s needed, and it’s really appealing to a lot of artists who want to help us out and be a part of it.”

Part of that collaboration involves the input of visual artists not involved in theatre, which adds diversity and a variety of skills to the art.

Fittingly, then, Zoot has just announced a residency with the Victoria Theatre Association, and their Mathile Theatre at the Schuster Center.  In the previous couple of years, Zoot has presented two shows independently at the Mathile, but this residency will provide both groups an opportunity for growth and collaboration. Zoot’s productions fit into two categories, Mainstage and Zoot Tales (child or family oriented), and the residency will introduce more people within those areas to a type of theatre relatively new to Dayton. Now, Zoot will choose a season of three shows to present, and the VTA will provide venue and/or assistance with touring; the Victoria will be able to offer educational initiatives in puppetry through ZTC, which fits nicely with programs such as their Physicians for Kids Discovery Series.

As such a collaborative organization, Zoot is looking ahead to continuing their work with schools and various theatres, and both Town Hall Theatre and the Zoot Theatre Company hope to continue their collaborations together. Cupp noted, “Puppetry itself is storytelling through a universal language,” and the idea of working together on something so universally applicable is beautiful. Collaboration, too, is universal, for we all have a certain connection as imaginative human beings capable of working together because of that humanity. Reflecting this, The Phantom Tollbooth provides an experience and combination unlike anything else in Dayton right now, where audience members truly can experience imagination come to life.

Renowned dancer Twyla Tharp observed that the arts are the only way one can run away without leaving home, and the shows in the greater Miami Valley area these next two weeks reflect that concept well. While there are a couple of deeper shows, there are quite a few comedies and musicals, which range across a spectrum from the witty Twelfth Night to humorous Hello, Dolly! One thing all of these shows have in common, however, is the ability to remove us from the stresses of our daily lives. This is also true of the deeper plays – like Fat Pig – which can provide escape while concurrently challenging us to consider social issues. Somehow, Christmas is only two days from today. Wow. It’s hard to decide what my favorite parts of the holidays would be, but if I had to choose, I think I might say:

1. Christmas Cookies – and, especially, buckeyes! We have an amazing buckeye recipe that is neither too peanut buttery and sticky nor too dry, and whenever we make any, they disappear almost instantly.

2. Family and Friends – yes, I have the same family and friends the other 364 days of the year, too. But, I love that the holidays provide a great opportunity to have people over and spend time with those I love. It’s easy to miss people not there more than usual on the holidays, especially the people I wish could be there to celebrate with us. but that only seems to make the time I can spend with people even more precious.

3. Holiday music and movies – I mean, it wouldn’t be a holiday without something artistic, right? My sister and I watch a musical version of “A Christmas Carol” every year, and a few days ago, I curled up with coffee and a blanket to watch “White Christmas.” I’m rarely in the mood for Christmas until I’ve watched at least one great holiday movie.

It seems like those highlights are at the top lists of many others, too. Speaking of all of those things (food, fellowship, and… films!), it’s not too late to catch this production that’s closing soon…

Two main messages seem to bombard our culture during the holidays: we are either obsessed as consumers, always searching for that perfect gift or the better price or the best idea; or we focus on the “reason for the season” and look beyond giving to the joys of spending time with family and friends. Generally, we operate somewhere in the middle of those concepts, and try to do and have it all.

In the midst of all of that, it’s easy to forget about the arts, in favor of everything else on the month’s agenda. However, in the Dayton Theatre scene of these next few weeks are several great shows sure to provide holiday joy and entertainment. Seeing one of these productions doesn’t have to become one more facet of your to-do list, but can actually be a way to focus: what better way to do something unique and special as a family than to see a performance together, and how special that gift could be! Childrens Theatres Explore the Holidays

So often, we associate “children’s theatre” with “running around in big furry costumes spouting cutesy dialogue” (witty description per playwright Allison Gregory), and “Christmas shows” with the same old retellings of the Nativity or Nutcracker (as Dave mentioned Tuesday). But, we’re often too busy to even think of those types of theatre, let alone putting them together, for the holidays seem to come earlier every year (did Black Friday begin on Thursday…?) – sometimes it seems like ‘tis the season for selfishness and stress! This season, two theatres are surpassing those stereotypes and producing quality holiday productions for audiences of all ages, providing the perfect way for families to spend time together, enjoy themselves, and move beyond the overwhelming focus on gifts and wanting more.

Beavercreek Community Theatre’s A Christmas Carol and Town Hall Theatre’s Junie B. Jones: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells both open this weekend. While extremely different shows, both feature youth performers and share conceptual similarities: they may seem like lighthearted Christmas fare, and audiences of all ages will definitely laugh and enjoy themselves, but also walk away with a little something else to consider.

Beavercreek Community Theatre’s Children’s Theatre presents Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; the structure of this adaptation is unique because it features a “play-within-a-play,” exploring the famous allegory as a story passed down from grandfather to grandson when young Thomas struggles to understand the reason for giving hard-earned money away to the poor. As the traditional story goes and Thomas’ grandfather shares, visits to his past, present, and future teach Scrooge the loneliness of his selfish, stingy ways and inspire him to change his life.

Teresa Connair, who directs the 34-member cast of students ages 8 – 18, has worked with children’s theatre for over fifteen years and began the Children’s Theatre branch (a unique facet not shared by many of the

other Dayton theatres) at BCT five years ago. Along with performing in shows, students can participate in educational initiatives and classes at BCT, and help choose children’s productions; approximately half of the cast members have participated in BCT’s Children’s Theatre in some way before.

For this show, Connair has worked with the cast not only on scenes, but also on qualities important in life. She commented,

“We try and teach professionality to these kids, and how to develop a character, build a character, be real onstage – not just say lines, and I think they do an excellent job. They constantly surprise me, and that’s not easy to do.”

That training evidently is successful, for Connair stressed the professional quality of this production. That professionalism and the fresh angle to a familiar story both ensure A Christmas Carol is unique, excellent, and worth fitting into a busy holiday schedule.

Town Hall Theatre’s Landmark Children’s Theatre’s current production, Junie B. Jones: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells, also promises to entertain and impress. Some may remember THT’s well-loved and hilarious production last season of Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business, exploring Junie B.’s kindergarten escapades; in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells, Junie B. is now in first grade and has grown up a little bit – this show features her parents less, and explores the relationships and events she deals with at school. Not only does Junie B. draw the name of May, her avid nemesis, for the school “Secret Santa” gift exchange, but both girls are required to perform together in the school’s holiday pageant.

Though many adults are unfamiliar with them, the Junie B. book series, by Barbara Park, is extremely popular with children; even if you have never heard of the books, however, the play and characters stand alone and will make sense. Junie B. reflects the lives and struggles of kids now, but adult audiences will also reminisce and remember the same things that the characters are encountering.  Playwright Allison Gregory, who was commissioned by Childsplay, Inc., to adapt the books for the stage, explained that the magic of the story and characters is how perfectly Park expresses the way kids think, “yet within that impulsive, boundless world, she builds a highly structured, meaningful story.”

Gregory’s adaptation and THT’s production align perfectly with this description, and the cast has had a lot of fun exploring it! Director Brittany Hayden-Hinkle, also THT’s Education Director, discussed how rewarding working with the kids has been:

“I really enjoy them as actors and just as people. Where else would you be discussing burp noises and what “squeeze a burp” should look like? The kids… bring an energy that is positively indescribable; they care so much about the shows they work on! And they never take themselves too seriously.”

Both A Christmas Carol and Junie B. Jones: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells will provide audience members with not only a great distraction from the consumerism and stress of the holidays, but a perfect way to go beyond our typical conceptions about the holidays and theatre to reflect on what’s truly important. Hayden-Hinkle expressed thoughts about Junie B. that reflects the depth of Christmas Carol as well:

“The show encourages kids to look past themselves during the holidays and reach out to those who need a little help. Sometimes the right thing is pretty hard to do but it’s always worth it in the end!”

So, this December, take your family or friends to see one of these two great children’s shows, and move beyond the typical conceptions, enjoying yourself and laughing in the process.

    Last month I received a notice in the mail.  OH, NO!  I had been assigned jury duty!  I have never been required to serve before.  Initially I thought that I did not want this responsibility, but then I kind of got excited about seeing our judicial system in action.  Unfortunately my pool of jurors was dismissed without ever stepping into the courtroom, I was crestfallen…that is until this week!  Starting on Friday, we all get a chance to participate in our great civic duty, but this time the courtroom is the Mathile Theatre at the Schuster Center.

    Washington Township's Town Hall Theatre 2010-2011 SeasonWashington Township’s Town Hall Theatre will present their hilarious courtroom spoof The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs this weekend on Friday at 7pm and Saturday & Sunday at 3pm.  The family show is recommended for audiences age 4 and up.

    Town Hall Theatre presents THE TRUE STORY OF THE 3 LITTLE PIGS at the Schuster CenterThe show, a zany musical adaptation of the classic story, takes place in “Piggsylvania’s” highest court during the trial of Alexander T. Wolf.  The proceedings, under the insightful guidance of Judge Prudence Pig, will determine whether Mr. Wolf is truly a “big, bad wolf,” or really just a misunderstood carnivore with a cold!  In this drama, YOU get to be the jury and decide the fate of Alexander!  With songs like It’s a Piggy World and Cheeseburgers Ain’t Cute, audiences won’t stop giggling until the verdict is in!

    Town Hall Theatre presents THE TRUE STORY OF THE 3 LITTLE PIGS at the Schuster CenterThe show is adapted from the 1989 children’s book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith.  It features book and lyrics by Robert Kauzlaric and music by Paul Gilvary and William Rush.

    The production is presented by the Landmark Children’s Theatre Company, the THT’s premiere series featuring professional and volunteer adult actors performing with young people.  The 20+ member cast includes C.J. Suchyta as Alexander T. Wolf, Tara Murphy as Judge Prudence Pig, and Centerville students Carley Marten & Grace James who will alternate in the role of Magill (the court reporter with a “snout for the truth”).  The production is directed by Colin Thornton who previously staged another Scieszka adaptation (The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Sutpid Tales).

    Mr. Thornton states that he especially enjoys working with these titles because he likes the way the author takes classic fairy tales and twists them in unpredictable ways.

    Town Hall Theatre presents THE TRUE STORY OF THE 3 LITTLE PIGS at the Schuster Center“Scieszka is a master at turning our expectations upside down and scrambling familiar children’s stories into something unique and strange,” Thornton explains.  “The random humor and insightful lessons that can be learned from the quirkiness of his literature are what inspires me as a director.”

    The show, which was previously presented at Town Hall Theatre’s own theatre is being taken “on the road” to the Schuster Center’s Mathile Theatre as part of a special projects grant the theatre received from the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District.  As part of this project, the theatre will present a free Friday morning performance of the show for Dayton Public Schools students, through a partnership with the Victoria Theatre Association.

    As a former journalist, the election season has always been an exciting time for me, but when I took up my mantle with Five Rivers MetroParks, I would be on the other side of the proverbial punch card. No longer simply an observer, I kicked off my new career with a tall order—volunteer with the MetroParks levy campaign. Through those months of phone calls and canvassing, I discovered that many Dayton area residents knew of the MetroParks closest to their home, but weren’t aware of the total number of parks, or the number of acres we protect. I thought it would be appropriate today to give you a little overview of each of our facilities.

    • Aullwood Garden MetroPark: This 31-acre garden situated on the edge of Englewood MetroPark is the former home of John and Marie Aull, whose world-wide travels inspired this luxurious shade garden. Lenten roses and other choice shade plants are featured at this estate garden.
    • Carriage Hill MetroPark: Take a trip back in time at this preserved 1880s historical farm.

      Children love to learn about agricultural and professional skills popular during the turn of the 20thCentury. This 900-acre park, located in Huber Heights, also offers hiking and equestrian trails as well as fishing ponds, a 14-acre lake, and the nearby Carriage Hill Riding Center, where trail and pony rides are offered April through October.

    • Cox Arboretum MetroPark: Mature forests populate this 189-acre park south of Dayton near Moraine and Miamisburg, along with diverse gardens, such as the Edible Landscape Garden and the Clematis Arbor. The Butterfly House is a favorite summertime destination to view native butterflies and moths in various stages of metamorphosis.
    • Deeds Point MetroPark: The landscape beds this park perched downtown along the Great Miami River offer visitors a floral garden paradise in an urban setting.
    • Eastwood MetroPark: Paddle in the 185-acre lake, ride the Mad River bikeway, fish in the lagoon or river or hike 3 miles of wooded and open meadow trails in this park just off State Route 4 near Riverside. Both the Buckeye and North Country National Scenic trails run through this park. This is the site of the annual GearFest recreation celebration, which takes place in the fall.
    • Englewood MetroPark: The potential for recreation is endless in this 1,900-acre park. Choose from 12 miles

      of scenic trails, 3.5 miles of bridle trails, paddling on the Stillwater River, and great spots for fishing. This park also boasts a unique feature—an 18-hole disc golf course. Disc golf is an easy-to-learn activity that involves throwing flying discs into a “basket” situated a distance from the starting point.

    • Germantown MetroPark: The size, quality and age of the woodlands make this 1,665-acre park the most diverse of the natural areas. The park also contains large open grasslands, cedar glades and dry hillside prairies. One popular weekend attraction (particularly for birders) is the Nature Center with its Window on Wildlife.
    • Hills & Dales MetroPark: This Olmsted-designed park has 63 acres of native plants and landscaped areas situated in the crux of Kettering, Oakwood and Dayton. Recently renovated to restore its former beauty, this park boasts 2 miles of wooded trails, including the Adirondack boardwalk that gives visitors a tour of the wetlands.
    • Huffman MetroPark: One of the most prominent amenities of this park located just east of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is MoMBA, the MetroParks Mountain Biking Area. About 8 miles of track snake their way through this wooded sub-facility. MoMBA’s trails are constructed to help the novice gain mountain biking confidence and challenge the most experienced rider.
    • Island MetroPark: Towering sycamore and cottonwood trees lend shade to those seeking respite from the bustling city in this 33-acre park, located just north of downtown Dayton. Landscaped beds, a seasonal water playground, picnic shelters and the historic bandshell are other hallmarks of this park.
    • PNC 2nd Street Market: Pick up farm-fresh produce, meats,cheeses, eggs and dry goods as well as flowers, wine, jewelry, soaps,gifts and more. The Market highlights the growers, producers and

    • Possum Creek MetroPark: Head southwest of downtown Dayton to find this 556-acre park and enjoy its many amenities, such as Polly Possum’s Math Farm, fishing ponds, historic Argonne Forest, 100-plus-acre planted prairies and the sustainable farm.
    • RiverScape MetroPark: Downtown Dayton’s favorite hangout has become an indelible icon with its fountains and renovated amenities. The covered pavilion provides shade for summer concert and festival-goers in the summer and doubles as an outdoor skating rink in the winter. Cyclists who commute or ride for recreation have welcomed the new bike hub. Children can splash around in the interactive fountains or get a brief history on Dayton’s innovative past while traveling the Dayton Inventor’s River Walk.
    • Sugarcreek MetroPark: This diverse area—with all stages of succession, mature forests, a trio of 500-year old white oaks, varied topography, a planted prairie, meadows and scenic Sugar Creek—is located near the Bellbrook area. Its trails are popular among trail runners, dog walkers and equestrians.
    • Sunrise MetroPark: The walkways of this tiny urban oasis, conveniently located just north of downtown Dayton, are filled with stunning views of the city’s skyline. Prairie plantings and wildflowers draw in wildlife from the adjacent river habitat, and make the park a serene spot for relaxing. Catch a glimpse of the large and graceful blue herons that frequent the area.
    • Taylorsville MetroPark: There’s no shortage of history or nature to encounter along this 1,300-acre park’s 13 miles of trails, nestled just outside Vandalia. Visitors also can link up with the Buckeye and North Country

      trails. The Buckeye Trail completely encircles Ohio and is over 1,200 miles long. The North Country Trailextends into seven states and will be the longest continuous hiking trail in the United States when completed.

    • Twin Creek MetroPark: This 1,000-acre park situated in the southwest corner of Montgomery County is home to 20 miles of hiking trails, 7 miles of equestrian trails, and ample access to the Twin Creek, one of Ohio’s cleanest waterways. Hike the Twin Valley Trail, a 22-mile backpacking trail connecting Twin Creek and Germantown MetroParks.
    • Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark: With about eight different formal garden areas, this north Dayton park is a haven for plant lovers, featuring something in bloom nearly year-round. The Children’s Discovery Garden here offers fun and learning through the joy of gardening. Visitors can also enjoy paved bikeways and the Marie Aull Nature Trail.
    • Wesleyan MetroPark: Home to Adventure Central, a program aimed at getting urban youth engaged in the outdoors, this 55-acre park offers its west Dayton neighbors a place to enjoy nature, whether hiking on 1.5 miles of trail, cycling along the Wolf Creek Bikeway, playing on the playground equipment or fishing in Wolf Creek.
