Turkish Delights Return to the Stage with South Park Tavern Show

October 21, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

We haven’t heard much from the Turkish Delights since early this spring, but we’re very happy to report that the band is back in action with a show on Saturday at South Park Tavern.  The Turkish Delights will perform with the Smug Brothers, who are putting the final touching on their forthcoming EP, Treasure Virgins.  Cincinnati’s Minor Leagues will round out a great evening of music.  The music starts around 9pm, and this show, like most every show at South Park Tavern, is all ages.

Music Video Monday: October 17, 2011

October 17, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

There are shows you plan to attend for months ahead of time.  And then there are the ones that sneak up on you last minute, causing you to drop everything to attend.  I’ve been spending the last few minutes rearranging my schedule for tomorrow night (and rearranging my Music Video Monday schedule) for what’s going to be a great show at South Park Tavern.  UK band, the Indelicates will be at SPT tomorrow night performing with locals Revampire. This is the Indelicates first US tour, so come out and give them a Dayton welcome.  As with all shows at South Park Tavern, the music starts around 9pm, and it’s all-ages.

IPA’s Featured in New Holland Beer Crawl

July 28, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

“New Holland Brewing’s Hatter Days is an annual event celebrating the success of the Michigan brewery and distillery with their customers and fans with a litany of versions of the flagship “Mad Hatter” ale. On Saturday, July 30th, New Holland is bringing the Hatter Days to Dayton. 6 Beers, 5 Bars! Come celebrate New Holland Brewing Co’s 14th Mad Hatter Birthday by drinking 6 different versions of Mad Hatter IPA.

Starting at 2pm at Thai 9 in the Oregon District, New Holland’s Beer Ambassador, Clay Cooper, will be tapping a specialty Mad Hatter at 5 different
establishments throughout the day.

Thai 9 will feature Rye Hatter: This beer showcases it’s grain-bill, made up of rye and barley malt. The rye adds a slight spiciness to the caramel-malt base, while also creating a creamy texture. Dry-hopping contributes a fresh citrus finish.

At Blind Bob’s you can experience the FarmHouse Hatter: An I.P.A. aged in Kentucky Barrels. Round, smooth wood character brings
a new dimension to dry-hopped, aromatic hoppiness.

Lucky’s will feature Oak Aged Hatter: aged in Kentucky Barrels. Round, smooth wood character brings a new dimension to dry-hopped, aromatic hoppiness.

Trolley Stop is serving up Black Hatter: A blackened version of Mad Hatter brewed with black malt for a dark, roasty sweetness to the base of the flavor profile. Finishes with a strong Centennial hop character from dry hopping.

And the final stop on the tour will be South Park Tavern for Imperial Hatter: A robust renovation of the India Pale Ale. Assertive dry-hoppying provides an aromatic telltale nose, indicative of the bitter symphony to follow. Bold hop character with lively grapefruit and citrus notes.

“Come to one tapping or come to all! It’s a pay as you go event that is sure to enlighten your taste buds in this World Gone Mad,” according to New Holland’s Clay Cooper.

Fair Shakes and Parlour Tricks Afoot at South Park Tavern

June 16, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

The Fair Shakes

Saturday night South Park Tavern will be rocking with two great local bands, each with a stellar lineup.  The Fair Shakes are fronted by Nick Kizirnis and features John Dubuc, Deni Wilson and Jim Macpherson.  Their sound channels the fun, classic garage rock sounds of bands like The Replacements and the Ramones.  Get a taste of what you’ll see on Saturday night from the band’s YouTube offerings.

If the Fair Shakes don’t get you on your feet, C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks will.  The band features Marc Betts, Brian Hoeflich, Tim Flanagan, and occasionally Josh Gonazalez,  Steve ‘Henhouse’ Hensley, Joe Prescott.  Their guitar-driven instrumentals combine good old fashioned rock and roll with a bit of boogie and lots of showmanship that will make you want to move.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlFOEUla25c’]

Saturday’s show begins around 9pm and costs $5.  Like most every show at South Park Tavern, it’s all ages.

March 29, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

…Actually it’s March 29th. We’re bringing you this week’s music video a day late because sometimes the mere rumor of a pending announcement is worth waiting for. Now that the cat is out of the bag, we’re happy to help spread the word about April’s NTRO/XPO residency at South Park Tavern put on by our friends at the Buddha Den. Every Tuesday night in April you can catch Kelley Deal & Mike Montgomery performing under the name R. Ring on the South Park Tavern stage. They’ll be joined by handpicked musicians and speakers (if my memory serves, a first for the NTRO/XPO series). Here’s a promo video by Chris Glass:

NTRO/XPO happens every Tuesday night at South Park Tavern.  It’s an, all ages event hosted by the Buddha Den. Admission is $5.

The Darker, Richer Side Of The Beer Spectrum, The Stout.

March 16, 2011 By Brian Petro 16 Comments

My brother and I were hanging out with an Ireland native a few years back, chatting and drinking beer. St. Patrick ’s Day was right around the corner, and  we asked him if the Irish drink green beer, like we do here in the United States. He looked at us and answered “No self respecting Irishman would be caught drinking a beer light enough to be dyed green.” St. Patrick ’s Day is the perfect opportunity to introduce yourself to the darker, richer side of the beer spectrum, the stout.

Initially, stout referred to any beer that was stronger than normal. For years, stout pale ales and brown ales were brewed in many parts of England. Stout was first associated with the darker,  porter style of beer in London in the 18th century by Arthur Guinness, and eventually instead of referring to the drink as “stout porter”, people started referring to the drink as “stout”. There is very little difference today between stouts and porters. Porters tend to use malted barley, and stouts use unmalted roasted barley. Some say it is the amount of water that is added when brewing. There really is no consensus at to a true difference. What you do get from stouts (and porters) is generally a deep, rich, roasted flavor with a hint of bitterness, much like you would get from a full bodied coffee or a dark chocolate.

Stouts have been gaining popularity in recent years, but there are still plenty of misconceptions about it. Many of them came from marketing campaigns before calories and carbs were bad. Stouts were long advertised as filling and healthful, especially milk stouts (brewed with milk sugars, which do not ferment well and lower the alcohol content) and oatmeal stouts (which adds oatmeal to the list of ingredients, giving it a sweeter taste and thicker feel). They were sold to athletes, workers, and nursing mothers because of their high carbohydrate content. While stouts still have a higher than average amounts of carbs, the calorie count and alcohol content can be relatively low. Guinness weighs in at 4.1% alcohol by volume (ABV), which is about the same as you would get in a Bud Light. Guinness also has just sixteen more calories than Bud Light in a 12 oz. bottle. Guinness is almost as light as Bud Light.

Guinness has been judiciously used in this article because when people think of stout, they think of Guinness. If you are going out for St. Pats that is probably the stout you have on your mind, but hold up. Maybe you should explore a little. Chappy’s Tap Room and Grille has a wide range of stouts, such as Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout (a personal favorite), Rogue Imperial Stout, and much hailed Lion Stout. If you are a little closer to downtown, South Park Tavern has its own selection of great beers, including Young’s Double Chocolate Stout and Murphy’s (a little lighter and sweeter than Guinness). If you are planning a little party at your place, you can stock up at Belmont Party Supply, where they have a full range of fine stouts from all over the world. Mt. Carmel Stout and Great Lakes Brewing Company’s Edmund Fitzgerald are delicious Ohio stouts, and Samuel Adams Imperial Stout is a smooth, rich treat for your taste buds. Southern Tier Brewery, also available at Belmont, offers delicacies such as Chokolat, Crème Brule, and Mokah stouts.

If you do plan on going out and celebrating with a traditional pint of fresh poured Guinness, then heading over to The Dublin Pub should be your location of choice. They pride themselves on pouring the Perfect Pint, and it is a very unique ritual to drinking Guinness. It takes 119 seconds to pour it, and The Dublin Pub has made it part of their art. Their kegs have the appropriate blend of nitrogen and carbon dioxide to ensure the waterfall effect that is also part of pouring the Perfect Pint. If you are still on the fence about trying a straight stout, The Dublin Pub also offers quite a few variations. Guinness layers nicely on a variety of beers, such as hard cider (Black Velvet or a Snakebite), Blue Moon (Black and Blue), Newcastle (Black Castle or Black and Brown), or the traditional Bass (Black and Tan). The young lady I spoke with said they would layer Guinness on most any beer they had, as long as you ask nicely.

On St. Patrick’s Day, we get to be a little Irish. Celebrate that little part of by introducing yourself to a traditional Irish beer. There are plenty of options out there, and many establishments have their beer lists online for you to look over.  And remember, no beers that are dyed green. Slainte!

2011. A new year. A fresh slate.  365 days of musical possibility ahead of us.  But enough waxing poetic, it’s time to get out and see some shows.

8-Bit Revival released a great album, You’ve Been Believed, in 2010, and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s next for the band in 2011.  On Wednesday, January 5th, you can catch them at South Park Tavern with fellow locals Roley Yuma and Boston bands, Drummers and A City Safe from the Sea.  Full details are at the Dayton MostMetro events calendar.

This week’s video is from 8-Bit Revival’s CD release party last spring and comes to us from our friends at the Music Seen.

Music Video Monday: December 13, 2010

December 14, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 2 Comments

….er, Tuesday, December 14th.  I’m sorry I’m a bit late this week, and I debated going into the whole story of why.  I’ll give you the cliff notes version: there was a show I had heard about that I had considered using for Music Video Monday except that when I went to find the details online, they were nowhere save for a vague reference on the band’s Myspace page.  The venue hasn’t updated their calendar in months, and it really makes me sad because I think it’s going to be a great show.  Pardon the rant, but the long story short is my plea to both venues and bands – do the very basics to promote yourselves.  Please and thank you.

After we ring in the New Year, I’ll be doing a series of posts about that very topic here on DaytonMostMetro.

Onward to today’s video.  The Fair Shakes are a fantastic local garage punk band fronted by Nick Kizirnis.  They’ll be playing at South Park Tavern on Saturday, December 18th with A Shade of Red.  Details on the show are at the Dayton MostMetro events calendar.

Here are the Fair Shakes performing last winter:

Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving: 3 Great Shows for Wednesday Night

November 23, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Whether you’ve just gotten back into town and are ready to kick start a weekend of old friends, family and food with some music or you just need some good old fashioned rock and roll to prepare for Thursday’s feast, there are quite a few great local shows this Wednesday night.  You can check out a full list of Wednesday night happenings on DaytonMostMetro’s Events Calendar, but here are 3 of my best bets for Thanksgiving eve:

  • C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks will be bringing their instrumental guitar-driven boogie to the Tumbleweed Connection in the Oregon District.  They’ll play 3 full sets for only $5 giving you plenty of time to preemptively dance off that turkey and gravy.  Here’s a live track from the band to put you in the mood:

  • Gem City Tattoo Club recently opened on East Third Street, and several local bands will be celebrating by playing a launch party for the new business at South Park Tavern.  The bill includes Me & Mountains, a new collaboration between Kris N and Joe Anderl called Fathers Day and Amusiac.  This show, like all others at South Park Tavern is all-ages.  Here’s a track from Me & Mountains’ debut album for your sampling pleasure:

  • The Psychodots will perform their annual Thanksgiving Eve Concert at Canal Street Tavern beginning at 9pm.  This Cincinnati trio enjoys a healthy fan base here in Dayton, and the Thanksgiving Eve show has become an area tradition.  Here’s a video of one of the band’s earlier performances at Canal Street Tavern:
  • Will you be going out to hear some live music on Wednesday night or staying home to stuff the turkey?  Let us know your plans in the comments!

South Park Tavern – An Entrepreneur Success Story

September 1, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Previously, I wrote an article about starting a business with little capital and smart business plan.  Here is a great case study:

Bill Daniels has been in the pizza business for a number of years.  He has a degree from Wright State University and the business savvy and technical knowledge of the food (pizza) industry.  This is a great combination for an entrepreneur.

After starting the successful Pizza Factory years earlier, Bill acquired a building a few blocks away on Wayne Avenue in the South Park neighborhood and began to lease the space on the top floor to tenants.  Then slowly he built the success of South Park Tavern.  At first, he found Shane, who is a sharp bar manager who had experience in the industry.  He gambled on Shane and Shane gambled on him.  He opened only on weekends and served no food.  The neighbors were thrilled to have a place and so they supported the tavern.  Service was terrible and there was no food.  But each weekend, the place got better.  Bill invested everything earned from those early days back into the business.  He began to offer pizza by transporting it from the Pizza Factory store down the street.  He extended the hours each time business picked up.  The neighbors relentlessly promoted the tavern.  If there was a special event, Shane would open the tavern.

Next, the great marketing promotion and understanding of the customer took off.  Shane opened through the week.   They had open mic nights to bring in bands.  They had half price pizza nights on Monday.  Bill built a patio outside and remodeled the tavern, installing 12 micro brew taps in the process.  Instead of offering the same beers and pizza that most other chains offer, the South Park Tavern offered exotic seasonal beers with unique and flavorful pizzas.

The South Park tavern offers only beer and wine.  By not offering hard liquor the establishment identifies itself as family friendly tavern.  Many would be tempted to increase revenue by offering hard liquor, but Bill and Shane understood the importance of their market positioning.

So, Bill used a formula that involved several trends in the industry.

  • Popularity of micro brew beers
  • Different pizzas
  • A hang out for the people of the neighborhood
  • Bands and music
  • No hard liquor

As a result, the South Park Tavern has become a popular and successful  business.  It did not start with a million dollars of capital.  The business stretched the capital and grew in small increments.  The business tried to differentiate itself and it created loyal customers.  Bill and Shane are not done.  They plan to carefully expand the business further.

There are some lessons for entrepreneurs in the growth of the South Park Tavern…

Three shows for your Thursday

August 18, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

The Black Who's?

Why wait for the weekend to see some live music?  This Thursday our local musicians will be serving up some great tunes at the following shows:

  • The Black Who’s? are hosting two bands from Atlanta at Blind Bob’s.  They’ll be joined onstage by The Biters who are currently touring with The Booze. Take the next 24 hours to practice saying, “I’m going to see The Black Who’s at Blind Bob’s with The Biters and The Booze” five times fast.
  • If you’re craving something harder, South Park Tavern may be the place for you.  Turlock, California hardcore band Verona will be stopping by to play with By Way of Sunstorm, who are finished up their first full length album.
  • The Dayton Band Playoffs are getting down to wire.  Thursday marks the last show of Round 3 and will determine who the last band is to move on to the Semi-finals at Canal Street Tavern.  A Shade of Red and Less Than 3 are on the bill so go out and put your vote in for one of these local bands.

What are your plans for Thursday night?

Wednesday night: dreamy music from near and far

August 10, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

The Delta Mirror

A break in routine can provide a refreshing look, or in this case listen.  Forgoing the usual Rock and Roll Playdate, this Wednesday South Park Tavern will be welcoming The Delta Mirror from LA.  This trio began as a hip-hop duo in the 90’s and now produces dreamy ambient rock with an electronic beat.

Take a listen to their track, And The Radio Played On:

The Delta Mirror will be joined onstage by local electronic-experimental artist Outside Residential and electro-acoustic singer-songwriter BJSR.  The show gets started around 9pm and costs $5.  The Rock and Roll Playdate will return to South Park Tavern next Wednesday.

Bob Log III at South Park Tavern

July 28, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

Bob Log III

We’re very lucky to have a chance to experience Bob Log III right here in Dayton this week.  I say experience because Log’s live shows are definitely an experience.  Log performs his unique take on Delta blues as a one-man band in a cannonball suit.  It’s a lively show and there’s usually some audience participation. Check out the video below of Log performing in San Francisco last fall.

Bob Log III will be at South Park Tavern tomorrow (Thursday) night along with Thee Pistol Whips and Pork Torta from Tucson.  Unlike most shows at South Park Tavern, this one is 21+ and costs $7.  The doors are at 9pm and the music starts at 10.

The weekend in music starts early

July 7, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

The Fourth of July holiday gave some of us the opportunity to have a short work week.  Looking ahead to this weekend in music, it looks like we’re getting a head start on things with several great shows slated for Thursday night.

Here’s the rundown:

– South Park Tavern will feature Brooklyn’s the Judy Blooms along with Roley Yuma and Andy Smith of Andrew & the Pretty Punchers.  For those unfamiliar with the Judy Blooms, it’s the brainchild of former Daytonian Jake Geisege who you may remember from the band Wild & Free.  This all-ages show is $5 and begins around 9pm.

– Forgoing the usual Thursday open mic night for a week, Blind Bob’s is featuring an evening of music presented by Poptek Records.  Chicago’s The Love of Everything will join Poptek’s own Kris N on the stage.  Brooklyn’s Vox Humana and local musician (and Blind Bob’s open mic host) Brandon Hawk will round out the bill. This show is 21+ and costs $5.

– If you want to rock out for a cause, head over to Vex.  The Jackalopes will join Jasper the Colossal along with Todd the Fox and Henrique Couto and the Tallywacker Express (members of Splattertude).  The show is a benefit for local filmmaker, Andy Copp’s newest project, Church of the Eyes.  This show is $5 at the door and gets started around 10pm.

-You can also put your vote in for Round One of the Dayton Band Playoffs over at Canal Street Tavern.  Thursday night features performances by The Whataveya, N.P.D., and A Shade of Red.  $3 gets you in the door, and you’ll get to vote on your favorite act during this seeding round of the Playoffs (the top 16 bands move on to Round Two).
