Meg Renee: Troy’s Music “Dream”er

September 12, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

This past May, Meg Renee released her first album, Dream Awake.  While sitting inside the Winan’s Chocolates and Coffee located  in the heart of downtown Troy, Ohio, I asked singer/songwriter Meg Renee a simple question.  A question that I thought would be  probably be one of the easiest to answer for her.  A question that most musicians get immediately.  I questioned her on when she  realized that she wanted to go into music.

Her response?

“I honestly don’t know,” Renee replied with a giggle.

That’s it.  Nothing more.

At a time when people that when teenagers, like Renee, are slowly turning the corner on maybe knowing what they want to do, she  was already ahead of the curve.

Renee claims that there was no “a-ha” moment when she discovered she wanted to be in music.  She maintains didn’t she have the switch flipped to the opposite end, and have the light bulb flicker on that’s above all of our heads.

She just simply couldn’t tell me as we sat there in that small coffee shop.

Regardless of what she says on what knowing when the opportunity struck her, Renee started to show signs that a career in music was inevitable early in her life.  At the age of six, Renee and her friend would hang out the house and sing Brittany Spears songs, and talk about maybe one day forming an all-girl band.  They would write songs that they would hope to one day be able to play in front of an audience.  Renee would also write and create stories with stickers that incorporated with them, along with poetry on the side.

It was at age nine when Renee started learning how to play the guitar.  Renee’s father, who also was a musician years ago when he would perform in a country band, began instructing her and then she followed it up by taking lessons at Sound City Music in town.  After a while, Renee wanted to separate herself away from other musician’s songs and try to work on some of her own.  “I wanted to try to teach myself a little bit.  I felt like I got a lot of skills from it (taking lessons) and it was time to make myself practice on my own stuff,” Renee said.

During one of her music classes when she was in the sixth grade, the teacher requested that each of the students write down a musical goal for themselves to obtain that year.  Renee’s goal was to fill a notebook that she brought to class full of songs that she wrote.  It was then that she fully understood that her aspiration to become a musician was more than just a silly fantasy.  It was going to become her life.  Her purpose.

Maybe there was the “a-ha” moment after all, I sheepishly said to myself.

Renee’s first gig was at the age of thirteen when she opened for a band that was slated to play at the recreational center in town.  The organizer of the show was impressed with Renee, and helped her get into some other events.  She sang in the local church that she attended, and was in some talent shows.  She has also participated in Miami County Fair, Troy Strawberry Festival, Rohs Café in Cincinnati, 2nd Street Market in Dayton, Courthouse Square in Dayton, Miami Vallley Music Festival, Holiday at Home Show, Brandeberry Winery among others.

In the beginning of January, Renee went into the studio to record Dream Awake in Popside Recording, located in Troy.  Being recommended to go and record, Renee worked with engineer/producer, and guitarist for Hawthorne Heights Micah Carli.  “I was very nervous going in,” Renee says when describing the first day of recording.  “You are taking your songs and that’s your baby, and they said, “Let us help you with it.””  Along with Renee singing and playing rhythm guitar, Cali recruited some others to help record the other instruments while he played on lead guitar.

The album begins with the terrific, country-influenced “Calloused Wings”, and is followed by the jazzy “Chase Me Through The Streets”.  Much like the playful song “Crazy”, Dream Awake captures the softness of Renee’s vocals, following her influences of Brandi Carlisle and Regina Spektor.

After high school, Renee mentioned that she would like to move to Nashville.  She has her eyes focused on attending Belmont University, though she is still looking at some other schools.  She visited the campus last summer, and soon started to adore the city of Nashville-where the school is located.  She became fond of the possibilities of advancing her music career there.  “I love the music there,” Renee explains with a twinkle in her eye the minute she begins talking about the city.  Also as an added bonus-there is a songwriting major there.

With her focus squaring straight up on being a better singer/songwriter, there are times when Renee misses out on being a typical teenager.  Most of her weekends consist of gigs, while sometimes the occasional dance is not going to be attended.  However, the music comes first for her.  Renee is hopefully that when she arrives in Nashville, and gets settled-she would like to set up a band.

First things first, though-Renee’s high school football team has a home game that she is going to.  “I am going to be painting faces and hang out with my friends.”  Across from the coffee shop where we sat at, The Fries Band are setting up on the stage as part of The Summer Music Concert Series.  The Fries Band play of popular and obscure cover songs from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. They blend their complex vocal harmonies driven by acoustic guitars with keyboards, bass, and drums to re-create very distinctive musical arrangements of bands like Crosby Stills Nash & Young, America, The Beatles, Eagles, Jimmy Buffett, etc.  Renee takes a peak to see the band setting up outside the window.

You just know that she would love to be the one setting up to be playing.

Local Small Business Fights Back Against Big Chain: Plans Strategic Expansion to National Market Through Online Sales

June 26, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro

bakehouse_toplogoAfter 17 years in business, Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company is planning to expand beyond their current Miami County market with the addition of online sales as their lead component for growth.

A small, mom & pop artisan bakery located in the small rural town of Troy Ohio, Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company has enjoyed years of consistent growth and local success. Established in 1997, the company moved to their current location in 2000 which boasts 3,800 square feet of bakery space in which they produce artisan breads, pastries and gourmet cookies for sale in their storefront café as well as to wholesale customers.

“Despite our success,” says Steve McLain, co-owner, “like many small businesses, we‘ve definitely felt the pressure of the large chain restaurants and bakeries popping up around us.  As a small, artisan producer, we knew we had to be strategic about our continued growth and find a way to expand beyond our current market in order to ensure longevity. The addition of online sales to our current revenue was the obvious first step. “

Bakehouse recently engaged a professional firm to help elevate the company’s brand presence to ensure it would not only be well received by a national market, but would stand strong when placed beside large chain competitors.

“Very often, small businesses reach a plateau after a number of years. They want to grow, but are afraid to invest in the tools that will help them reach that next level,” says McLain. “We knew that in order to continue to compete, we couldn’t stand in the shadows of the big chains. We had to refresh and not only come out swinging, but shining brightly as well.”

Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company invested in a complete redesign of their brand and web presence to feature high-impact photography of their artisan products and the ability to order products online. “The ultimate goal was to show customers outside of the local area who might not frequent our brick and mortar location the quality of our products and give them the ability to order online,” says Margaret Begg, co-owner and master baker.“This allows us to share the craft of artisan baking with folks all around the country and bolster our growth at the same time.”

Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company is now a small business poised for growth and expansion. Their new web presence features six of their most popular artisan bread staples:  Sourdough, Cranberry Poppyseed, Raisin Walnut, New York Rye, Seven Grain and a special collaboration with a local famer and miller, Organic Spelt. They also offer seasonal products and gift boxes online, as well as their famous Bakehouse gourmet cookies.

All of Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company’s products are created by hand using all natural ingredients in their Troy Ohio bakery. No emulsifiers, artificial fillers, preservatives or other “shortcut” additives are ever used. Every ingredient that goes into creating Bakehouse products are completely natural and whenever possible, locally sourced.

“Yes, there might be a faster way or cheaper way to create a loaf of bread,” says Begg,  “but the nourishment of a nation is no place to cut corners. We believe it is our responsibility as food producers to keep the health of our community at the forefront of every decision. So every ingredient we use in the creation of our products or the delicious food in the Bakehouse café is selected with this in mind.”

Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company’s artisan breads and gourmet cookies are now available to the public via their online storefront at www.bakehousebread.com. Shipping is available within 2 days to anywhere within the continental United States.

Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company creates handmade artisan breads and gourmet cookies for lovers of great food around the world. For additional information about Bakehouse Bread & Cookie Company, contact them at937-339-8100 or [email protected]. New Artist Gallery coming to Troy Square- Artists Wanted

March 23, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

Local Troy business woman Patty Rose is ready to bring art to the Square in Troy.  The 1908 building was originally the First National Bank of Troy, and most recently was a cabinet shop.        In her first attempt as a fine art gallery owner she is offering local artists booth rental space for With up to 32 spaces/booths artists can  rent for as little as $25/month for a 3 ft x 9ft space u up to 150 square feet for $300 month.  The vignettes from the building previous tennat help divide the space into rooms. Rent will cover all utilities and expenses, but artists will be asked to volunteer up to 4 hours per month.  Artists will be asked to make a 6 month commitment and there will be no commission to pay.  Rose says “some of the larger spaces have large picture windows and great light and this building just screams to be a gallery.”
There will be a party on April 5th from 6-8pm at the site to

Patty Rose as Grand Marshal for the 2011 Hometown Holiday Parade

view the gallery and by April 10th Rose will know whether their are enough tenants to make The Art Vault Gallery venture a go. While not an artist herself, Rose says she keeps hearing about the need for a space from artists and she’s willing to make this happen.

If the success of her Allstate insurance business, her other commercial properties and the Leaf & Vine  she and her husband own in Troy are any indication, I’d say if it can be done, Patty will make it happen.

Interested artists are welcome to contact Patty by email or at 524-6443.

Food Adventures Get Lucky at Dunaway’s Beef and Ale

March 8, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Summer Shandy and a Brooklyn Lager

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, Dunaway’s Beef and Ale in Troy, Ohio is gearing up for their annual event.   With huge crowds and outdoor tents, Dunaway’s  hosts one of the biggest St. Patty’s Day parties in the Dayton area.   Big Ragu and the Food Adventures Crew visited the pub recently and was impressed with the menu and drink offerings.  Since 1991 owners Brenda and Sandy have offered good food and spirits to the Troy faithful.   Known for their roast beef, the friendly staff is always eager to share the daily specials and 11 draft beer choices.  Dunaway’s is a mom and pop place.  It is in an old house facing main street, and is big on personality.

We were seated at our table and promptly ordered a couple of pints.  The Big Ragu grabbed a Brooklyn Lager, which is brewed in Utica, NY, then we went for a Wisconsin favorite, Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy.   We decided to order some cheese and crackers to match our beers.   We grabbed a jalapeno stuffed hot pretzel, because pretzels go well with beer.. right??

Our favorite appetizer of the day was the peel and eat shrimp.  The shrimp were like our own personal pot of leprechaun gold at the end of the rainbow.  Served cold and with Cajun spice on the shells, they were downright addicting and to die for.  The fresh shrimp sparked our taste buds, and paved the way to try some more specialties.

Dunaway’s Pastrami Sandwich

Dunaway’s menu is heavy on sandwiches and pizza.  We ordered an incredible looking pastrami sandwich which was enormous!  This huge, flavorful sandwich was pure heaven.  The Big Ragu ordered a burger with everything on it.  Plenty of toppings adorned the perfectly cooked hamburger, which was more than a handful.

Your Food Adventurers sampled other items like fish, and the very tasty pizza.  The pizza sauce has just the right amount of kick and will satisfy your cravings for a decent pie.  One special item offered on the menu is the “Garbage Truck Pizza.”  This pizza is loaded with toppings including fresh mushrooms, garlic, onions, tomatoes, sausage, pepperoni, ham, meatballs, black olives, green olives, ricotta cheese, banana peppers, and you can request jalapenos!  How is that for a deluxe pizza?

Another menu item worth mentioning is their “6-Pound Sandy-wich.”   They tout this challenge as “1 person, 45 minutes to eat it and it is free.”  This mountain of a sandwich is filled with beef, ham, turkey, corned beef, pastrami, cole slaw, American cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, horseradish and fries.  It is probably easier to find a 4 leaf clover than beat this monster.

The Hamburger at Dunaways

Dunaway’s  also offers soups, salads and has a full catering service for your next party.  They pride themselves on using local meat markets and vegetable farms including Caven’s Meats, Bowman Landis, Fulton Farms, and Troy Meat Shop.

This place has everything you need for a fun, casual dining spot.  Locally owned, with good food, good drink in a unique atmosphere, it is everything we look for in a Food Adventure.  Just a couple of minutes off of Interstate 75 in Troy, put this place on your radar for good eats.  Don’t forget to grab a pint and toast to St Patty’s day, no matter what day it is!
