Summer Grilling Tips for Great Food Adventures !

Who doesn’t love a good cookout?  Most Daytonians are elbow deep in grilling season this summer.  From parties, to romantic dinners or family time, this is the time of the year to use that gas or charcoal grill.  The Food Adventures Crew is here with some helpful tips to make your grilling experiences a success.  The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House share our MUST EATS an MUST DO’s.. Grilling out version!

 

— PREPARATION IS KEY:  Prepare beforehand to make it easy on yourself.  Marinade your meats and pre-slice veggies ahead of time instead of fumbling on the grill table.  Ziplock bags work great to hold veggies doused in a bit of olive oil, and grill ready!

 

— MARINATE YOUR MEAT: A simple soaking can do wonders for tenderness and flavor.  

Hungry Jax says “Marinade chicken in buttermilk! It makes it so tender!”

Big Ragu loves using Soy Sauce, Worcester Sauce, and Minced Garlic mixture for a simple steak marinade.  For chicken, he uses a cheap bottle of Italian dressing or Olive Oil, Basil, Garlic Powder and Oregano.

— GET THE RIGHT TOOLS:  Make sure your tongs and flipper are long enough, and that they work correctly.  It will save you a few dropped sausages, or epic losses thru the grill grate.

 

— MEATS SHOULD BE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE WHEN GRILLING:  Take cuts of meat out of fridge 30 minutes prior to grilling, so they are not cold.  It won’t contaminate the meat! It will actually help you grill the meat more evenly.

 

— MAKE YOUR HAMBURGER PATTIES THINNER IN THE MIDDLE than the outside.  Always hand patty your burgers with fresh meat, and make them thinner in the center.   This is because the middle swells when you grill the burger.  This helps even the playing field, and prevents your burgers becoming undercooked meatballs.

 

— HIGH HEAT FOR STEAKS, ALWAYS:  Grill that steak and let it sit until that final flip.  The result is a juicy, seared steak with great grill marks.

 

Grilled Sausages with Beer Steamed Onions and Green Peppers

— FISH, THE LESS FLIPPING THE BETTER:   Cook fish about 75 percent then flip it once.  Let the grill do the work.  Wana see flipping seafood?  Go to Benihana…

 

— DRIZZLE LIME OR LEMON JUICE OVER SEAFOOD RIGHT AT THE END OF GRILL TIME:  This is always a  great finishing touch of flavor.

 

— GRILL SALAD:  Yes!  Chef House says, Grill salad! It doesn’t always have to be about meat.  Romaine, Belgium Endive and Radicchio are great together and hold up well on the grill. Wilt the greens and get some grill marks on there. Chop and toss with olive oil, vinegar and cheese.  Chef House suggests sherry vinegar or a sweeter white balsamic with bleu cheese. Fresh herbs are always a nice touch too.  Shout out to Miami Valley Spice Traders, who carries a great honey white balsamic vine

 

— GRILL PORTABELLA MUSHROOMS: 

     Chef House loves to marinate them overnight in orange juice, olive oil and garlic.  So easy, and her family’s favorite.

     The Big Ragu uses Worcester sauce, soy sauce and garlic powder for his Portabella Mushroom Grill Marinade.

 

— GRILL ASAPRAGUS: The Big Ragu uses Olive Oil and Garlic Salt when grilling these sticks of love.

     Chef House marinates her asparagus overnight in her family favorite recipe of  orange juice, olive oil and garlic.  Is your mouth watering yet?

 

— GRILL PIZZA:  Hungry Jax loves this summer twist on the ole pizza pie.   Make sure you have a hearty crust.  Medium heat and inventive toppings are the key to pizza grilling  success !

 

— HAVE A LOCAL LUAU: Impress your family and friends this summer and have an entire grilled meal from local vendors.

Here are some supplier ideas from Chef House:

     Keener Farms, one of the the area’s best butcher blocks for grass fed burgers and brats.

     Ed Hill owner of Xenia’s HILL FAMILY FARMS has great Chicken available at Dorothy Lane Market.

     KJB PORK, available at the  2nd street market.

Fresh veggies from Homefull, Patchwork Gardens or Flying Mouse. All of these local brands are found at area farmer’s markets.

 

— LEARN TO MAKE GREAT SAUCES: We love sauces to go along with grilled meat.  Chimichurri is a huge favorite of Chef House and so versatile.   Here is another tip from Chef House… www.Epicurious.com is a great site for new sauce recipes.

 

NY Strip Steak with Bleu Cheese Crumbles

— GRILL CORN IN THE HUSK:  Here is a quick, fun idea the kids and adults will love.  Get some fresh corn still in the husk, cut it at the tip.  Peel back and take out the silks. Pull the husk back up and soak in water for 20 minutes.  Throw them on the grill wet and watch them steam the corn on the grill.  Flip until the husks are brown on all sides, peel back and serve rustic style with salt and butter.

 

— OVERESTIMATE YOUR MEAT: Chef House says cook more meat than you need, so you have leftovers!  Especially chicken, which can be easily made into some delicious tacos the next day.

 

— BEER ISN’T JUST FOR DRINKING ANYMORE:  Get a tin pan, and pour in 1/2 of a beer.  Add some sausages and sliced peppers and onions and let steam on the grill.  Touch up the grill marks on the sausages just before you serve it.  Serve it with the steamed onions and peppers too, with or without a bun !  Now you’re a hero.

 

Dogs, Asparagus and Salmon

— THROW LIVE CLAMS ON THE GRILL:  Wana impress your friends easily?  Throw a dozen live clams on the grill.  When they open, they’re done.  It is that simple, but your friends with think it is pretty darn cool.

 

— HAVE A GLASS OF WATER NEARBY FOR FLARE UPS:  Just in case your juices or grease catch on fire, this keeps you and the fire, in control.

 

— SPARE PROPANE TANK:  Make sure you have an extra, FULL, propane tank on hand.  Nothing says “oh Sh*t” like an empty propane tank during grilling.  You never know when you are gonna run out, so don’t!  Keep a spare, full tank near to your grill, in cae you have to pull the “old switcheroo.”

 

— PLACE GRILLED FOOD INTO SEALED PLASTIC STORAGE CONTAINERS:  Especially at a cookout, flies tend to swarm to open plates of cooked meat.  The answer is get some plastic lid containers and seal the cooked meats inside.  Trust us, it works much better than fumbling with open plates and aluminum foil with open cracks.

The Strawberry Festival officially begins on Friday night, June 6th with food, entertainment for the whole family on the Great Miami River Levee! Two full days of events follow beginning with a short Parade on Saturday morning. From there the main action continues on the Historic Streets of Downtown Troy and along the Great Miami River Levee! Browse over 200 high quality art and craft booths. If you can make it with strawberries, you will find it at the Troy Strawberry Festival, more than 70 food booths offer everything from strawberry salsa, chocolate covered strawberries, strawberry bbq sauce, and of course the famous strawberry donuts! The Festival is more than just a weekend of fun. It serves as a major fund-raising event for many of the area’s civic and charitable groups. Committees work year-round to prepare for the weekend when as many as 100,000 people come to Troy to take part in our world class festival.

Anne Agoren and Izzi Bags to Headline A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance

Trying to shine a spotlight on Dayton’s emerging fashion industry has been no easy task, whether it’s dealing with people who don’t take the industry seriously and dismiss it simply as vanity, to those who watch shows like Project Runway or America’s Next Top Model which just give a slight glimpse into how the industry really works, and those who simply don’t understand how embracing the fashion industry can be a huge boost for the local economy.  Yet for the past 2 years, there has been a core group of area professionals, business owners, community leaders, and fashion insiders who have been working diligently to educate the community about the positive impact the fashion industry could have on Dayton, from producing quality events and products to showcase local talent, and helping those who have dreams to be a part of the fashion industry to reach their goals,and together this network is called the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC also known simply as (DE-FI).

Since our official Launch Party in July 2013, we’ve grown in numbers, reach, and we took on a more direct approach and by direct I mean, we went straight to the fashion capital of the world New York City.  While I’m not at liberty to share the details of my work and experiences during the past two fashion week seasons, I can say that the Dayton area was blessed when Wright-Patt Air Force Base welcomed the family of Joshua Ladner to the area.  Not only, has his presence had an instant impact on the growth of Downtown Dayton with the opening of the very popular #HairJourney at Salon J Ladner but he also brings with him additional experience in the world of fashion!!  As a part of the Adam Project, Josh has spent the past few years being a part of almost every aspect of the production of New York Fashion Week from casting models for major designers, to show layouts, to working one on one with designers, and blogging.

Two weeks ago, Josh dropped a bombshell on me when he informed me that several high profile designer from NYC and London have committed to being a part of (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week taking place in May.  Well, last week Josh and I hit the streets of New York City during Fashion Week and while we were there, he introduced me to Anne Agoren, designer of Izzi Bags, Shorty Award Finalist,  and Fashion Writer.  Over dinner at one of NYC most posh restaurants the Rogue Tomate, Josh and I shared the vision, direction, and work of (DE-FI) with Anne and colleague Sony Loren. To sum up the night, it ended with Anne and Sony saying they are all in and committed to not only showcasing during (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week but assisting with the of planning events!!

I wanted to give Anne a proper introduction to the people of Dayton and the Miami Valley areas and what better way to get to know someone than a Q & A session? So without further ado, introducing the newest member of Team (DE-FI) Anne Agoren!!

Q: Who is Anne Agoren?  You came from humble beginnings and you are now a well-respected designer who takes the time to give back, why is giving back so important to you and why is it important for notable people like yourself to lend a hand to organizations like (DE-FI)?

A:  Every day I get up and am thankful for who I am, where I am, and the opportunities that have been given to me. It has not been an easy journey, I have struggled through much heartbreak from two divorces, but been blessed with 3 fabulous boys, moved continents 3 times, had to learn another language just to survive. I had it all, lost it, and now trying once again to rebuild. When you suffer a knock back you just have to put on your big girl panties, put on your lipstick, and carry on.

Failure is not an option for me. Don’t think for one minute I am a hard faced business woman, I cry all the time when I am frustrated, when I am sad, when I am happy and that’s not a bad thing. I get very hurt by other people’s opinion and I wish sometimes I could let it run down my back as they say, but I am human, have feelings and can’t. The most important thing is to pick yourself up, brush yourself down and carry on to fight another day.

I really believe I have had the most amazing opportunities given to me, I have traveled all over the world and I want to help those that are less fortunate or who need a break. Let’s face it without a little bit of help from others the world can be a difficult place to be.

Q: How did you get your start in the fashion industry?

Izzi Bags are all hand made in Turkey. However, Anne is currently looking to bring production of Izzi Bags to the U.S.

A:  When I got divorced I went to live in Cyprus, the Northern part which belongs to Turkey, I could not speak the language, I had no family or friends there and so I took a job working for a large European Design House overseeing the design, pattern making, cutting, stitching, packing and shipping. Can you imagine how hard that was when I couldn’t even communicate for over 6 months with a factory of over 300?

I went to school to learn to speak Turkish and I could actually say ” these buttons are not lined up” before I could order a glass of wine. This experience gave me the basis of what was to come in the following years. I owe a lot to the patient Turkish people who taught me well and as you can imagine I still have difficulty in keeping my hands by my sides because this was the only form of communication I had during the early stages of my fashion years. I also tend to talk loudly when I get excited about something, for some reason I believed the louder I spoke one day they would understand me!

Q:   Who were your influences personally and professionally? 

A:  Professionally, I want to say the biggest influence over my career is probably Coco Chanel, she was a chic, sophisticated lady who never let the outside world get to her, she believed in what she did and ignored those that doubted her. I learned that lesson from her, one of her most famous quotations stands out for me “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”.

Personally, the person that has influenced me the most is my mother, when I was a child I would sit in her closet, with the door closed, in the dark, I would hold her leather handbags, I would caress them, smell the leather and I would dream that I was walking along Bond Street in London carrying one of her bags that they were in fact mine. When I used to leave the closet I would always mumble to the bags… “One day you will be mine”.

But the one person that has kept me going is my son, Steven, He had a rare form of cancer that only hits men, when I got the call from him, there are no words to describe that feeling for a mother and I can’t even begin to tell you what we as a family went through. But today I am so blessed, Thanks be to God that he is now cancer free, for that reason I get up every day and know that whatever is thrown at me I can get through it.

Q: What is Izzi Bags?  Who is your target market, and when people think Izzi Bags what is the image that you want people to see or represent?

A: Izzi bag was created because like most women, I had and still have a great passion for handbags and every single woman I know looks for something different when buying one. I know that when you purchase your first Izzi bag you will come to understand how much love and respect we have put into each and everyone’s creation. As they are all hand crafted using a woven technology, from the finest leather available every single piece in the collection becomes slightly individual.  My target market?  Well, my answer to anyone that ask’s me that question is quite simply this “I had you in mind when I first put my pencil on the sketch pad”.

Q: Where are Izzi Bags currently produced?

A: As my journey in fashion began in Turkey, this is currently where they are made, but we are now working with other manufacturer’s in sampling to try and bring the production closer to home in the USA.

Q: Why is it so important for Fashion to be embraced in smaller markets like Dayton, OH?  Why do you think the Midwest in general has gone untapped or overlooked by the Fashion industry?

A: Just because women or men for that matter do not live in Milan, London, Paris or New York should not mean they do not care about fashion and I believe that there are up and coming designers across the world in the smallest of villages who need to be embraced by the industry. I am all for helping, mentoring and speaking out to help these individuals. It does not matter what age you are, look at me I was over 40 before one Izzi bag was ever sold in the market place. I do not think I can generalize and say the “Midwest” has been untapped, I think across the world there are thousands of towns and areas that are in the same boat and it’s about time we opened the doors of opportunity to all.

Q: What were some of the struggles you faced as an emerging designer and what do you consider to be your “Big Break” that took you from being an emerging designer to an established designer?

A:  For me the biggest struggle was getting buyers to see me, When I had my samples ready I would go by myself and knock on doors, I would go again and again and again. It was soul destroying when they sent me away. Having worked for a large company that is known worldwide I was suddenly there on my own. I could not afford a branding agent, a publicist or any help. I was the designer, the salesman, the tea maker.

The biggest break for me was when I was nominated and then a finalist at the Shorty Awards in New York. Bare in mind that at the time this happened to me was right at the beginning of twitter and there were only 17 million people on it compared with today 218 million!!!!! There I was a small brand in the final 6, no Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, No Chanel, No Hermes, no Prada, No Gucci…that in itself was a major achievement and the Wall Street Journal even mentioned me in their post about the event.

The next morning my telephone rang off the hook, I was asked to talk at breakfasts, lunches, dinners about how I used Social Media to build a brand. From there I opened my second company that now teaches, advises and executes social media for small brands, large worldwide brands and celebrities. I really believe that you never know what tomorrow holds. My mother always says when one door closes you must circle the house to see which window is ajar.

Social Media has played a big part in building my brand, it has enabled me to have a world platform, how difficult it was years ago to get your name known on the other side of the world. Now in 140 characters or less you can communicate in a split second with someone 5000 miles away or in your own back yard!

Q: There are so many misconceptions about what the Fashion Industry is or what it represents, if there was one myth about the fashion industry that you could debunk what would it be and why?

A:  One of the biggest misconceptions about fashion is that it costs a lot to look good…. that is rubbish, you can buy a few staple items and switch them around, add accessories and make the outfit look like a million dollars. These days a lot of the high street brands reel out season after season collections that resemble designer wear. Oscar Wilde once opined that “fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months”. I disagree because I have pieces in my closet older than my 28 year old son and they are now called ‘vintage’ and worth more than the pieces I bought last week.

Q: What is the biggest mistake that most people make when trying to get their start in the industry?

 A: Everybody thinks they are a  designer they think it is so easy to just create a brand and run with it. It takes a lot of dedication, a lot of blood, sweat and tears. It really is not about how much money it takes, it is really about belief. I spent many nights without sleep, worrying would the industry and members of the public like my designs would they believe in me? It is easy to think we can all start our journey as Coach, LVMH or Gucci but in reality you must start small, build your brand and grow.

Q: You’ve had the opportunity to speak one on one with some of Fashion’s most elite designers and personalities(Including Diane Von Furstenberg head of the Council for Fashion Designers of America) , how do you prepare yourself for their interviews and have you ever asked them for their advice or keys to their success?  If so what was the best advice you’ve ever received?

A: I remember interviewing Christian Louboutin on the Red Carpet just over a year ago and I have to tell you that nothing could have prepared me for that opportunity. I seriously was like a giggly little school girl, I did not want the moment to pass. Izzi even bought me a pair of shoes to wear for the occasion which cost nearly $1000. I want you to know that was madness but Louboutin was impressed I was wearing them, but to be honest as soon as he passed by I took them off as they were so uncomfortable. I have never asked a celebrity or designer for their advice because I believe we are all in charge of our own destiny.

Q: What are you most excited about in terms of your participation and your role in helping to produce (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week?

A: I am excited for the (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week mainly as it is my chance to help you make a mark on the world’s fashion stage, I am really looking forward to being able to show that it does not matter how old you are, from what background you come from, you can achieve what you want with a little determination. I want to be able to convey my message to the young and old alike it is never too late and you are never too old to make it in life. I am really excited to walk on the runway in the Stylish Mom Show with my son a cancer survivor and I am really blessed that God spared him. He is an inspiration to all of us. Seeing Izzi bags on the runway will reduce me to tears, here I go again!

Q: What advice do you have for emerging designers ready to make their mark in the industry?

A: I have only two things to say to them: Believe in what you do and grow skin as thick as an elephant you are going to need it.

Maid-Rites with a Little Kings: Click on photo for full effect

Usually when someone says “loose meat” it has never been a compliment, until now.  On the outskirts of the Miami Valley, in the town of Greenville, a legendary burger joint has existed since 1934.  It is called Maid-Rite Sandwich Shoppe.

Over the years it has developed a cult following.  People drive miles, and even come from out of state to taste their ‘burgers.’  They aren’t even burgers, they are “loose meat sandwiches” or “Maid Rites.”    Why are so many people coming to eat these sandwiches and why are they so good ??   The Big Ragu and Crew set out to solve the mystery.

We have a had a handful of Food Adventures to Maid Rite either after the Darke County fair, or on a whim, or to satisfy an insatiable craving.

Over the years we realized that there are 2 types of people, those that have never tried Maid Rite Hamburgers, and those who have tried it and cant figure out how they make them.

 

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— The main attraction is the maid rite loose meat sandwich. The sweet taste of the meat has developed three major theories of how they are prepared 1) Some think they are steamed in pepsi or coke  2) Some claim they are steamed in beer  3) Others say that sugar is added to the meat before cooking.

— The eatery is a small, no frills, brick building located at 125 N. Broadway St. in Greenville, Ohio and worth the trip.  Locally owned they claim no relation to the MAID-RITE sandwich shop franchises in Iowa etc…

— Limited menu with 4 sandwich choices which include loose meat, chicken salad, egg salad or ham salad sandwiches.  Shakes, sundaes, beer, soft drinks and chips are available too.

— The employees are very protective of the recipe and process of the sandwiches.  We were unable to get the secret recipe after badgering the employees and managers.  We were threatened with spatulas and told we would be picking shards of Little Kings bottles out of our rumps for a week.  Sorry for the letdown, folks.

— For some unknown reason, it is now customary to stick your gum on the outside of the building.   Literally thousands of wads of chewed gum have been stuck on every outside wall of the establishment.

— Bathrooms are located in a separate building around back, adding even more uniqueness and oddness to this place.  They also have a drive up window for a quick meat fix.

MUST EATS:

— THE CHEESE RITE SANDWICH:  This is the classic maid rite sandwich with cheese.  What is a Maid-Rite Sandwich?  Think of it as a sloppy joe but with no sauce. It is served on a soft bun, slapped with meat and toppings, and wrapped tightly in wax paper.   The meat has a sweet taste to it.  This sandwich is topped with a squirt of mustard, a couple of pickle slices and a slice of cheese.  They run about $1.95 and the average person could eat 2 or 3 of them.  You can get the Big Jim version which adds ham, but we prefer the original Cheese-Rite.  Eating one is a unique experience, and you have to try it.  Warning: once you unwrap one, we hold no responsibility for future addiction.

— CHOCOLATE MALT:  Creamy, sinful and made just for you.  You cant go wrong with this delicious, cool classic.

— LITTLE KINGS CREAM ALE BOTTLES: Oh come on , you gotta make it a full blown Food Adventure and wash it down with a icon from Schoenling Brewery.  Ok, wanna be a snob?  Then grab a Heineken instead.

— MIKESELLS POTATO CHIPS:  No fries in this establishment, so choose your hometown chip instead.  They have a nice selection of Dayton’s favorite potato chip.  It is a good pairing with the simple, classic sandwich.

A couple of sidenotes:  Make sure you bring cash, because that is the only form of payment they accept.  Also, hours are 10am-10pm except Fri and Sat when they stay open until 11pm.

Amazing isn’t it?  A formula for success being a squished, sloppy joe like sandwich served in a small diner with people sticking gum to the walls outside.  But people come back every day in droves.  WHY??  It is the curiously sweet tasting, delicious loose meat sandwiches.  The workers feverishly tossing the ground meat, stuffing buns,  wrapping it quickly, and tossing across the counter.  It is the personality of the place.  If you have never visited this spot, make sure you put it on your “Food Adventure hit list.”   Maid Rite is one-of-a kind.

Is Snow Hill Country Club Haunted ? Have dinner and decide yourself

Ever had dinner with a ghost?   Well here is your chance, Ghost Hunters!   Snow Hill Country Club is haunted, and had been serving up “Dinner and a Ghost” nights on Fridays in October for the past 12 years.    In fact, the place is so legendary, that it was featured on an episode of the Biography channel’s “My Ghost Story.”  The country club is located just outside of Wilmington, on State Route 73.  The “Dinner and a Ghost” nights feature food, fear and even an overnight stay.

The Food Adventures Crew have eaten in many scary places, but this was our first “Haunted Food Adventure.”   The food is pretty straight forward.  On our two trips to the country club, buffet items included turkey and ham, while another night they featured ribs and salmon.   The meal is rounded out with salad, a couple of sides and a dessert plate shared by the table, or possibly some cake.

But we weren’t here for the food, we were here for the ghosts.  And Snow Hill delivered….

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— “Dinner and a Ghost” features appetizers in the bar and a buffet style dinner.    The menu has improved since the 1820’s and they wont be serving  rabbit, steamed onions, venison and beef tongue anymore.

— After dinner, the hosts take you on a guided tour complete with historical information, sound recordings of unexplained voices, and even a couple of photos believed to be “supernatural.”  Tour gurus include historian Kathleen Madison and Ghost expert/Paranormal Investigator Shelly Suittor.   Supporting cast includes Ghost Hunters Kat Powell and Alicia Soich.

— After the tour, guests are encouraged to look around for about an hour and explore for themselves.  During this time a few notable unexplained “phenomenon” have been known to occur.

— Attendees may purchase alcohol at a full service bar on the main level.

— There are 6 guest rooms, and groups may make reservations to stay the night for about 100 bucks per room.   Included in the stay is “ghost hunting” all night, if you have the guts to roam the halls late at night.   Even golf may be arranged during good weather.

— Snow Hill Country Club is located in New Vienna, Ohio at 11093 New Vienna Rd (Daytonians know this as State Route 73).  Famous visitors have included Henry Ford, Eleanor Roosevelt, and legendary 1920’s golfer, Walter Hagen.

— Minimum groups for ‘dinner and a ghost’ are 12 people.  Cost of dinner and tour is $45 per person.

MUST SCREAMS:

— Snow Hill was built and owned by the Harris family in 1820.  It was a popular Inn and tavern up through the 1900’s.  One of the oldest running businesses in Ohio, the country club is said to be haunted by spirits of past owners, family members and past guests.

— Many stories abound from the 70’s and 80’s like a man whom believed he hit a pedestrian in the road, but noone was found.   Or records of police and firefighters responding to alarms and seeing unexplained light and movements throughout the house.

— The Food Adventures Crew had a few unexplained happenings during our two tours:

Big Ragu was taking photographs in the dark, damp cellar thought to be a passage for the underground railroad.   In some of the photos, some circular orbs appeared, one very prominently.  We were told that many ghost hunters believe these are tell tale signs of “spirits” in the room.   To be honest, we do not know what to think, other than the orbs were strange and not in photos taken of the same place seconds earlier.  The prominent orb in the photo had a distinct outline and almost looked to have “veins” running through it.  Odd indeed.  Is it a spirit?  You decide.

The Big Ragu was in the storage area of the basement, when the door next to him opened about an inch and then slammed quickly.  He looked around the room at the handful of people near him and they had that “oh crap” look on their face.  Ragu opened the door and saw a dark empty hall with a staircase, there was nobody there.  There was also a moment where the Big Ragu felt something grab his back pocket.  He was unsure if this was a  fan who liked his behind or a ghost.

Elegant, yet Spooky: Stay the night… if you dare

— During our 2nd visit to Snow Hill, one of our fellow guests took a photo of what appears to be an apparition in one of the bedrooms.   Again, unexplained and just plain weird.

— Employees tell stories of glasses shattering, chandeliers swinging violently, and various apparition sightings.

— Recordings of various unexplained voices gave us goosebumps, especially one particular ghost that whispered the word “Becky” as clear as day on the recording.  The voice was creepy like Golem from Lord of the Rings movies, or like someone who ate too much at Golden Corral.

— An 1880’s portrait photo of an man was found in a cupboard, and when locked away, would keep appearing in various open areas of the country club.  One of the tour guests recognized the photo as her ancestor Thomas Wilson, a Civil War vet.   Since being identified, it was found out that he was a former owner of the country club, purchasing it at auction in 1898.  Since being identified, his photo has ceased moving inexplicably.

— A candlemaker tool levitated and slammed to the ground on a couple of occasions in front of various dinner party guests a few years back.   The theory is that the ghost of the original owner, Mrs Harris, might not be keen on a “peasant tool” being allowed in her formal dining room as decor.

 

With Halloween around the corner, this is the perfect time for “Dinner and a Ghost” at Snow Hill Country Club.  We were skeptical going in, and realized after 2 visits, some things happened that we couldn’t explain.  Were they spirits from lives past?   Look at our photos, listen to the recordings in person.  Is the place haunted?  Did we see “ghosts?”  You decide…. and check it out for yourself,  but we suggest you don’t go alone.

New Artist Gallery coming to Troy Square- Artists Wanted

Local Troy business woman Patty Rose is ready to bring art to the Square in Troy.  The 1908 building was originally the First National Bank of Troy, and most recently was a cabinet shop.        In her first attempt as a fine art gallery owner she is offering local artists booth rental space for With up to 32 spaces/booths artists can  rent for as little as $25/month for a 3 ft x 9ft space u up to 150 square feet for $300 month.  The vignettes from the building previous tennat help divide the space into rooms. Rent will cover all utilities and expenses, but artists will be asked to volunteer up to 4 hours per month.  Artists will be asked to make a 6 month commitment and there will be no commission to pay.  Rose says “some of the larger spaces have large picture windows and great light and this building just screams to be a gallery.”

view the gallery and by April 10th Rose will know whether their are enough tenants to make The Art Vault Gallery venture a go. While not an artist herself, Rose says she keeps hearing about the need for a space from artists and she’s willing to make this happen.

If the success of her Allstate insurance business, her other commercial properties and the Leaf & Vine  she and her husband own in Troy are any indication, I’d say if it can be done, Patty will make it happen.
