The Bengsons Return to Dayton, Celebrate CD Release

January 17, 2011 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

The Bengsons (cr Domingos Goncalves)

You may recall last summer, our onStageDayton team forcibly encouraging you to check out out the Bengsons. In case you don’t, here’s the rundown:

The Bengsons are Shaun and Abigail Bengson.  They’re based out of New York, but Shaun’s originally from Bellbrook and performed with the high school’s band and theater as well as with community theater groups.  The duo has performed around the country and around the world in places like Cape Town, South Africa.  They’ll make a return visit to Dayton this week to celebrate the release of their latest album, The Proof.

The Proof is a fantastic mix of songs that tell stories and transport you to lands near and far all the while giving you that amazing feeling that comes from a really great stage show.  You can stream the album at the Bengsons’ website or pick up a copy on Thursday, January 20 at Canal Street Tavern when the Bengsons perform live.

You can also catch the Bengsons on WYSO earlier that day.  They’ll be on Excursions with Niki Dakota around noon.  Tune in at 91.3FM or listen online at www.wyso.org

National Day of Listening Encourages Conversation Instead of Shopping on November 26th

November 23, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

In 2008, oral history project, StoryCorps had an idea to encourage people across the country to use the day after Thanksgiving not for shopping but for conversation.  That idea became the first National Day of Listening.  The tradition has continued and public radio stations around the country, many of whom air StoryCorps during Morning Edition, are getting on board. Here in the Miami Valley, WYSO has set up its own page explaining how you can participate.

It’s pretty simple: sit down with someone you care about: a parent, grandparent, relative or friend and invite them to share their story.  You can record the story on a laptop, iPhone, tape recorder or even with a paper and pen, but just the simple act of listening can be enough.

There are tips on how to get started including a video from StoryCorps on WYSO’s website.  You can also hear some interview between local residents from when the StoryCorps mobile booth was in Dayton this spring.  The national version of StoryCorps airs on WYSO 91.3FM every Friday morning during Morning Edition (5-8am), and Miami Valley StoryCorps (comprised entirely of local interviews) airs Wednesday mornings during Morning Edition.

WYSO’s Summer Concert celebrates Rev Cool and local music

August 27, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

This Sunday, WYSO 91.3FM will be presenting a free summer concert at Carillon Park.  It’s going to be a night of music and dancing headlined by the Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble.

If you aren’t a regular WYSO listener, you may be wondering about Rev Cool, whose name adorns a variety of bumper stickers around the Miami Valley. Jim Carter has been hosting Friday evening programming at WYSO for nearly 30 years under the name Rev Cool.  The show is called Around the Fringe and airs on WYSO every Friday night from 8pm until midnight.  It features music from “around the world and right here in your own backyard.”

The Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble (Photo by Joey London)

Rev Cool’s local music connection predates his time on the WYSO airwaves.  In fact, by the time he started hosting Around the Fringe he was already president of his own record label, I WANNA.  The label was responsible for the very first Guided by Voices release and an Earth Island Orchestra release featuring Macarthur Genuis Grantee Regina Carter.

“He had already proven himself as a cutting-edge live music promoter. And he was already firmly established at the center of a Dayton’s vibrant local music scene,” says WYSO Music Director Niki Dakota.

In the past few years, Rev Cool has taken the great dance-able vibe from his radio show and turned into a live performance.  The Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble features DJs accompanied by live musicians and dancers coordinated by Cityfolk’s Kelsa Rieger.

“Over the last two years, The Rev Cool Arkestra and Dance Ensemble have come to be nothing short of a live-music REV-o-lution.  It’s a sensation to the ears and the eyes, it lifts your spirits, and it leaves you powerless not to dance.  It just may be the perfect stage show.  Simply exhilarating,” says Dakota.

Designed by Colleen Reinhart

This perfect stage show will be rounded out by two other great local acts, C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks and Ruckus Roboticus.

C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks has been making a splash around the Miami Valley with their unique brand of instrumental, guitar-driven boogie.  Featuring a stellar lineup of local musicians, their set promises to get the audience ready to dance.  Arrive at 5pm sharp so you don’t miss a minute of their set.

After Parlour Tricks, Ruckus Roboticus will be spinning a DJ set that promises to lots of fun.  If you didn’t make it to his EP release show I told you about a few weeks ago, now is the time to see him in action.

This is a family friendly event and should be wrapped by 9pm so bring the kids.  Hopefully they’ll be so worn out from dancing that you’ll have no problem getting them to bed when you get home.

For the rest of the details, check out the event listing on our calendar here at Dayton MostMetro.

First Friday in Music: August Edition

August 4, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt 1 Comment

Another month has come and gone which means we’re due for another First Friday celebration in downtown Dayton.  Here’s your guide to some of the  musical offerings around the city this Friday night:

Reyna and Dana

—Canal Street Tavern will welcome the Black Who’s? to the stage around 9:30pm.  There’s also an extra special early/opening show by Rob MacPherson’s Rock & Roll Workshop.  That’s set to get started around 8pm (doors at 7:30pm)

–For something smooth, head over to J’Alan’s on Ludlow.  Reyna and Dana will be performing along with Al Holbrook.  Holbrook performed a few live tunes on WYSO’s Excursions earlier this week.  You can listen here.

—The Elderly Brothers will be playing at the Trolley Stop on 5th Street.  They bill themselves as cosmic Americana and are reported to have a great live show.

Team Void

-It’ll be a lovely evening to enjoy Garden Station on 4th Street, and you can explore a great community space while hearing some music courtesy of Luchador surf rockers Team Void.  They’ll be joined by A Shade of Red who just moved on to Round 3 of the Dayton Band Playoffs.  It’s free music starting at 8pm with a bonfire after the sun goes down.

-If Yellow Springs is a bit closer to home or you find yourself out that way and needing some live music, then check out Romeo Champagne at Peach’s Grill.  They’ll be joined onstage by Mercury Mouth for a $5 show that starts around 10pm.

What are you excited about doing on First Friday?  Share your plans for the evening in the comments.

There’s been a lot of buzz since Auburndale came back from hiatus this winter and began work on a new album.  That album, Alive in the Dying City, is slated for release this fall.

You can hear a preview of the new album as well as an interview and acoustic set with Auburndale from this week’s edition of Kaleidoscope on WYSO.

You can also see Auburndale live this Saturday night at Blind Bob’s with the Sound for Language, Columbus’ Ships in Masses and Segments who are making their live debut.  This 21+ show is $5 and starts around 9pm.

Here’s some video of the band performing on Kaleidoscope earlier this week.

Griffin House to perform in Springfield, on WYSO

July 22, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Springfield native Griffin House has been getting a lot of attention.  He was featured on the Huffington Post and as one of CBS’ Emerging Artists.  This weekend, he’ll be back in his hometown to perform at a special event at the Wescott House on Saturday night.  Wright Now is a showcase of innovation in art and design and House will perform accompanied by the Now Device, a multimedia production company founded by fellow Springfield native Rod Hatfield whose work you may have experienced as part of the FilmDayton Festival this spring. Full information about the Wright Now event is available here.

House will also be stopping by the WYSO studios on Friday morning for a live performance and interview with Niki Dakota, host of Excursions.  Tune in to 91.3FM at 11am or listen online at wyso.org

Here’s a music video of House’s newest song “Head for the Hills.”

Songwriters Showcase Wednesday at Canal Street

July 12, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

If you’re a fan of singer-songwriters, you’ll want to be at Canal Street Tavern this Wednesday night. Canal Street is the perfect setting for the evening’s Songwriters Showcase featuring three great Dayton-area natives. Tod Weidner (Shrug, The Floods) and Chris Montgomery will be joined onstage by Meg Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh is a Centerville native now based out of New York. She’s recently been performing in London and has a YouTube cooking show called Vegan Meg (check out the video below).

The Songwriters Showcase begins at 9pm and is $5. You can also hear Meg Cavanaugh perform live on WYSO during Excursions (10am-1pm) on Wednesday.

The Turkish Delights release …Ahem!

July 8, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

This time last year, the Turkish Delights had just finished playing Round One of the Dayton Band Playoffs, which they would go on to win in September.  One year later, they’re celebrating the release of their latest album, …Ahem!  with a show at Blind Bob’s.  They’ll be joined onstage Saturday night by Me & Mountains and Toads and Mice.  This 21+ show is $5.

$5 is also the cost of a copy of …Ahem, and it’s well worth it.  The Turkish Delights recorded the album at home, and it features a great variety from the band’s catalog. After the release, the Turks hope to work on a regional tour and will start work on their next album.  For more on the Turkish Delights, and for a preview of the album, check out the interview I did with the band on this week’s Kaleidoscope (WYSO).

Yellow Springs Experience: An Immersion into Art & Culture

July 6, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro 1 Comment

The last time I visited Yellow Springs, I went used book shopping at Dark Star Books, walked the trails at the beautiful Glen Helen Nature Preserve and ate a delicious lunch at the popular Ha Ha Pizza eatery.

It was a good reprieve from the my day-to-day stresses.

A day in the eclectic, bohemian village can be a refreshing and invigorating experience.

Just imagine what 10 days can be.

Starting this weekend, Yellow Springs invites the region to become acquainted with everything that makes it special in the form of a 10-day art and cultural extravaganza called Yellow Springs Experience. From July 9-18, the village will be bustling with a flurry of cultural activities. Over 80 events ranging from visual arts workshops, wellness classes, theater and dance performances and art exhibits are scheduled, creating a 360-degree immersive shared experience. The goal was to capture the essence of the community, says Yellow Springs Arts Council administrator Carole Braun.

“There was always the Antioch Writer’s Workshop and the Yellow Springs Kids Playhouse,” says Braun “There were a couple of things that happen in the summer. This is an attempt by the arts council to put together some of the things that were a backbone of entertainment and culture in Yellow Springs. We thought we would try and pull together everything. So there are astrology classes, a sustainable building and farm tours… Glen Helen ecocamps. We tried to get a little bit of everything so that people can experience the flavor of Yellow Springs.”

Events will be located at various venues throughout the village, including Antioch College which will present “Letters Home from Freedom Summer”, a public reading of select writings of some of the over 600 students who organized non-violent protests of the segregation policies of Mississippi in the summer of 1964. “We’ve been able to pull in our educational institutions,” says Karen Wintrow, executive director of the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce. “This community is really strong on education.

“Our  job is to bring people to Yellow Springs,” she adds. “We think the festival embodies everything we’re about.”

Braun is optimistic that this will be an annual celebration.  “We’d like to make it a yearly event,” she says. “We’re already excited about next year!”

Most events are ticketed, including those that are free. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.yellow-springs-experience.org, which also offers a complete list of events.

What can you expect from the 10-day Yellow Springs Experience? Here is a partial listing of some of the events scheduled:

The Grand Hoopla YS Experience Launch Party at the YS Arts Council – July 9, 4-7 p.m.

The Red Tent Women’s Self-Nourishing Time – Daily, 2-4 p.m.

YS Kids Playhouse: The Conference of the Birds – Thursday – Sunday, 7:30 p.m.

Skate Music Fest & Battle of the Bands – July 11, 3-8 p.m.

Cirque Carnival on Dayton Street – July 16, 6-10p.m.

WYSO “Are You Listening” Group Listening Experience, AACW Poetry Jam, movies nightly at the Little Art Theatre, wheel-thrown pottery workshops, yoga meditation, and much more!

Pizza Parlour Boogie comes to the OE

June 22, 2010 By Juliet Fromholt Leave a Comment

Wednesday nights at the Oregon Express just got a lot more musical.  C. Wright’s Parlour Tricks have signed on for a weekly gig playing what they’ve coined as ‘pizza parlor boogie.’  The show is free every week and for the first month, they’ll be joined by opener Rob Heiliger.  To get a taste of the tunes before you go out, check out Kaleidoscope on Wednesday at 8pm on WYSO.  Chris Wright will be in the studio talking about the band and spinning some of their recordings.  Wright will be joined on the air by former Luxury Pushers bandmate, Eric Purtle who’ll be talking about his band,  Dark Backward’s upcoming CD release (more info on that later this week on Dayton Most Metro).

This weekend you’ll be able to get your hands on a copy of yet another of the year’s great local releases.  Me & Mountains will be celebrating the release of their debut album on Saturday, June 5th at Blind Bobs.  The band will be joined onstage by Okay Lindon and the Harlequins (Cincinnati).

The self-titled album was recorded by Darryl Robbins from the Motels Beds and is being released under his Fictionband Mechanics label.  Me & Mountains is offering a bonus CD of demo tracks to anyone who buys the album at the release show on Saturday.
