Downtown Dayton Will Come Alive (While Celebrating the Day of the Dead) During the Nov. 1 First Friday

The Dia de los Muertos parade was such a hit last year, organizers are again hosting the event during this year’s Nov. 1 First Friday.

By the time Dayton’s next free First Friday event hits the streets of downtown, Halloween will be over — but lots of people will still be costuming up. That’s because the Nov. 1 First Friday, which will take place from 5 to 10 p.m., includes the second annual Dia de los Muertos Parade. The event is based on the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, during which friends and family gather to celebrate loved ones who have passed.

The parade will begin at 6 p.m. on the corner of Jefferson and Fifth streets. The parade includes life-size puppets, dancers, music and more. The public is invited to dress up and join the parade, which will proceed east on Fifth Street. In addition, the monthly Courteous Mass Ride will meet at 5:30 p.m. at Don Crawford Plaza (220 N. Patterson Blvd.) and will join the parade. Synergy Kitchen Incubators will host a pre-parade food truck rally at 200 S. Jefferson St. before the parade, which will end at the Missing Peace Art Space (234 S. Dutoit St.) with a reception and artwork created by local students.

The Dayton Visual Arts Center will celebrate the opening of this year’s ARTtoBUY Holiday Gift Gallery during the Nov. 1 First Friday.

But that is not all: As always, First Friday will include art exhibits, special events, live music and more throughout downtown. The Nov. 1 First Friday also will be an excellent time to start holiday shopping: For example, the Dayton Visual Arts Center (118 N. Jefferson St.) will celebrate the opening of its annual ARTtoBUY Holiday Gift Gallery, a great place to find a unique gift for anyone on your list. DVAC is open until 8 p.m. Call 224-3822.

A complete list of activities taking place during the Nov. 1 First Friday is available online. Many restaurants, taverns and retailers offer special discounts, host live music and offer other special activities during the event. Other highlights include:

Sew Dayton (261 Wayne Ave.), in collaboration with Telephone Weekly, will host a live T-shirt screen printing of exclusive “Sew Dayton” shirts. Each shirt is $20 and includes a free T-shirt re-design sewing class. The free sewing class is only offered to the first 40 T-shirt purchasers.  Call 234-7398.

Clash Consignment (521 E. Fifth St.) will feature artwork by John Knabe with live music from Matt Freeman and Mike Guidone. Visitors can browse pre-owned and vintage clothes in a lively atmosphere. Call 241-9434.

Grass Roots Enrichment and Wellness Center (400 E. Fifth St., Suite C) will host a “khafla” — a small gathering centered on food and belly dance. Works by artist-of-the-month Ron Rollins will be on view to enjoy.  Activities for families will be available, along with a free introduction to massage therapy and Reiki and light refreshments. Artist Mike Elsass will be painting live at Color of Energy (16 Brown St.) New artwork by Elsass, including large-scale pieces, will be on display. Call 266-3491.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors (48 High St.) will feature the work of some of its most dedicated members. Light refreshments will be served as guests browse artwork on view. Open until 8 p.m. Call 228-4532.

Live music and artwork by Doug McLarty will be featured at CADC (45 S. St. Clair St.). Call 313-9883.

New artwork and gifts will be on view and for sale at Gallery 510 Fine Art (508 E. Fifth St.). Call 672-6717.

Experience the Best of Downtown During the Aug. 2 First Friday

Art. Music. Shopping. Food. Fun. First Friday in downtown Dayton is about all of these things.

This free event will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, throughout downtown. The August First Friday is always one of the year’s largest, and this year promises to be the same with the range of activities taking place. Roaming performers — the McGovern Ceili Dancers, acoustic duo Pourover and juggler Tony Steinbach — will provide entertainment throughout downtown.

If you plan to enter the Downtown in Focus photo contest, be sure to bring your camera along. From 8 to 11 p.m., most of downtown’s buildings will be lit for photographers who would like to capture city nightscapes to enter in the competition.

Just a few events taking place during the Aug. 2 First Friday are listed below:

Are you ready to rock? Canal Street Tavern (308 E. First St.) is presenting a tribute show by American Pink Floyd. The show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $12. Call 937-461-9343.

In honor of the second anniversary of Clash Consignment (521 E. Fifth St.), the store will throw a party to celebrate with all its customers. Entertainment will be provided by DJs Mike Wishnewski and Matt Freeman and henna artist Lily Whitehead. Boston Bistro will cater, and a $2 sidewalk sale will be held. Work by artist Robert Walker also will be featured. Call 937-241-9434.

The monthly Courteous Mass Ride will meet for two rides this month at Don Crawford Plaza in front of Fifth Third Field, (220 N. Patterson Blvd.). The first will ride leaves at 5:30 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. Rides are free of charge and all skill levels are welcome. This month’s route will go past the downtown dog park, hit spots in Old North Dayton and surrounding areas (DATV, Mike Sell’s Potato Chips, Charlie’s Deli and Whitewater Warehouse) and head down the Mad River bike path back.

Synergy Incubators  will produce their fourth  First Friday Food Truck Rally.  Street Food is all the ragea and Dayton Food Park  (2oo S. Jefferson St.) will have 14 of Dayton’s food trucks lined up from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  After you grab some grub, browse through the booths of local artisans that include jewelry, homemade soaps, pottery and other crafts.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Great Dayton Flood, the Dayton Visual Arts Center (118 N. Jefferson St.) is showcasing artwork by local artists around the theme “Water, Water Everywhere.” Visitors can talk to the featured artists from the exhbit. The gallery will be open until 8 p.m. Call 937-224-3822.

Green Baby (31 S. St. Clair St.) will exhibit work by local artist Bley Hack, offer free chair massages to visitors and host a sale on select children’s items. The store will be open until 8 p.m. Call 469-8665.

Miami-Jacobs (110 N Patterson Blvd.) will host a Summer Block Party. HOT-FM 102.9 and WROU-FM 92.1 will broadcast live from the event, and entertainment includes a photo booth, indoor cornhole tournament and outdoor games. Call 937-668-0213.

As part of the First Friday Salsa Music Series, Son del Caribe will play live music from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at RiverScape MetroPark (111 E. Monument Ave.) on the MetroPark Pavilion Stage. Experience sounds that include salsa and other styles of Latin dance music. Call 937-274-0126.

Sew Dayton (16 Brown St.) will showcase artist-of-the-month Craig Galentine, creator of the The Kokeshi Clan. A group of local children will be selling lemonade for Hanna’s Treasure Chest outside the store and the winner of the “Make It Work” contest will be announced, along with the next challenge. Wiley’s Comedy Niteclub (101 Pine St.) presents Cutthroat Freakshow by Dirty Little Secrets. This off-the-beaten-track show begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 for 18 and older. Call 937-224-5653.

WYSO Community Voices Producer Wins National Award

376592_10151134971634174_476479545_nYellow Springs resident Basim Blunt received a First Place award from Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) for his story, “Boogie Nights: A History of Funk Music in Dayton.” The national award was presented recently in the Student Soft Feature category at the annual PRNDI Conference in Cleveland.

 

Blunt said, “I just want to thank the musicians who are long overdue for recognition and who took the time to help me put together this story. I want to dedicate this award to them.”   Blunt’s story was also recognized by the Ohio Associated Press, taking First Place in the Best Feature Reporting category.

 

The Ohio Associated Press honored Will Davis, also of Yellow Springs, for his feature on Springfield filmmaker Justin Russell’s “The Sleeper,” an homage to the 80’s slasher film genre. Davis took First Place 601689_10151631178734174_1138000001_nin the Best Use of Sound category.

 

Both Blunt and Davis were participants in WYSO’s 2012 Community Voices training course; a project to teach local people how to make radio stories. Over six months trainees learn to record and edit digital audio, conduct interviews, write radio scripts, and ultimately produce a feature story.

 

WYSO celebrated the completion of its third Community Voices training course in June with public radio producer and StoryCorps founder Dave Isay. Isay gave a public presentation at the Mathile Theater in Dayton, and lead a private Master Class with Community Voices Producers at the WYSO studios. Stories produced in the 2013 training will be presented in two hour-long radio specials, and at a Screenless Screening at the FilmDayton Festival in August.

 

Public radio station WYSO 91.3 is licensed to Antioch College with studios in Yellow Springs. It broadcasts on multiple platforms: 91.3 FM, live streaming at WYSO.org, on HD radio and on the Public Radio Player, a mobile application.  WYSO is the Miami Valley’s only NPR News station with programming from NPR, Public Radio International, American Public Media, PRX and the BBC as well as the work of local and independent radio producers.

ReInvention Stories: Daniel Kinney

Daniel Kinney works third shift at UTC Aerospace Systems, a company that makes wheels and breaks for airplanes. He’s been an electrician for over twenty-five years. He and his wife Keshia own and operate Caribbacanas, a Caribbean food truck. They are part of a group of people reinventing dining. Kinney saw that the food truck movement has potential, and recognized the instability in manufacturing – so he decided to make the leap.

 

 

Caribbacanas is now a member of the newly formed Miami Valley Mobile Food Association. The truck will be hitting the streets again this summer.

This week on ReInvention Stories we meet Shane Anderson, owner of Ghostlight Coffee on Wayne Avenue in South Park.

Growing up, Anderson was a band kid. In high school, he dreamed of becoming a band director, which, he did. Anderson was a band director and music teacher for fourteen years. Most of that time was spent at Miami East High School and Vandalia-Butler High School. But he had another dream, of one day running a coffee shop. And he wanted to quit teaching before getting too burnt out.

 

Ghostlight Coffee celebrated its one-year anniversary in November of 2012.

On Thursday, March 28 at 7:30, “Peace on Fifth will present movie #3 for their trafficking awareness campaign – Start Freedom Dayton (Sponsored by Love146 Dayton, Stop Human Trafficking Dayton and Peace on Fifth). FLESH, a documentary about sex trafficking in the U.S., challenges our ideas of slavery, human trafficking & prostitution. The story is told by the girls who have escaped and those who are currently enslaved, former and current pimps, and modern day abolitionists. This year’s edition of LUNAFEST – a collection of 9 short films made by, for and about women – will take place on Sunday, April 7 at 3:00. In addition to the nationally touring program (which you can read all about by clicking this LINK), this year’s local line-up will also feature a short film by WSU student Megan Hague – WOMEN WHO YELL. (I previously announced that Hague would be at the screening, but that has changed. She will not be able to attend.) Proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Fund and Planned Parenthood – Southwest Ohio. The suggested donation for tickets is $10 each (minimum of $5 per ticket). More ticket information will be available soon.

Downtown resident and NEON regular Hector Escobar wants us to screen the film BLESS ME, ULTIMA. In order to make the screening happen, we need to “sell” 65 tickets by the end of March. If that many tickets are reserved, the screening will take place Wednesday, April 10 at 7:30. (This is a lot like our screening of THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE. There’s no gamble. Reinventing The Telling of Stories – A New Interactive Website About Dayton Wants Your Input

POSTCARDIn the Spring of 2012, Emmy-winning, Oscar nominated filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar, along with about 15 other media artists, hit the streets of Dayton asking the question, “How is Dayton doing?” Engaging subjects in thoughtful interviews and creating compelling, non-fiction stories is nothing new for Reichert and Bognar – but it turns out that this project was much more difficult than anticipated.

“This was a really ambitious project,” said Bognar. “We were attempting to take the pulse of the whole city. And we did not know what the answers would be.”

After identifying a handful of focus neighborhoods, the group—which was a collaboration with WYSO 91.3 FM— split into teams. They began to find and interview people who were in the process of reinventing themselves. In addition, the group documented over 35 events throughout the city. After weeks and months of sifting through hundreds of hours of material (not to mention a whole different language of web design), the resulting efforts can now be seen on an interactive website – ReinventionStories.Org.

Upon logging on the site, the first thing you’ll see is a beautifully animated introduction featuring a vintage postcard of the city and various soundbytes from numerous interviews. This introduction leads into an 18-minute documentary featuring 7 individuals from various neighborhoods. Using a combination of still photography, audio interviews and video footage, users get a sense for who these people are and how they are in the process of reinventing themselves. Each piece ends with a sort of cliffhanger. This 18-minute piece is merely Act One of three. In the coming weeks, each of the seven characters’ stories will continue in Act Two and Three. Reichert says that as the stories unfold, more dramatic material will reveal itself. She said, “These stories fit together to tell a bigger story about the city. We wanted to capture our City’s life and diversity and to show that we’re not all that far from each other. We’re all in this together.”

Those ideas are conveyed even more as we “Drive the Road.” This section of the website takes the viewer down East 3rd Street. The voice of Carol Coffey, teller of one of the stories, asks: “ What signs of life do you see in Dayton?” While passing storefronts and houses, a series of bubbles appear that allow the user to watch short stories about events from over the summer, prompting the viewer to think about that question. One story is about the Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus, another is about the Blessing of the Bikes, another, the World Soccer Tournament, sponsored by Welcome Dayton.

The storytellers want us to think about the fabric of the city…that all these very different events are happening in the same town.

In a third section of the site, the user is asked questions like “Where do you see signs of life in Dayton?” or “What city event do you most look forward to each year?” Once answered, the responses are broadcast via twitter. @ReinventDayton

In addition to new sections of the documentary, the coming months will see more coverage of events while “Driving Down the Road” and additional questions posed to users. The team also noted that “treasures have yet to be unveiled.”

The website went live in late February, but the idea is to let the website become a living, breathing site that will reveal more elements in time. The interactive part will rely on users to keep it fresh and alive. By April, Daytonians can upload their own stories of reinvention.

This project came about when WYSO director Neenah Ellis approached Reichert and Bognar regarding a national competition called LOCALORE – a new initiative of the Association of Independents in Radio (AIR), in collaboration with Zeega (a group of people who want to push non-fiction storytelling into unchartered territory*). Hundreds of organizations applied for the competition – only 10 were selected.

Bognar said he had so much fun running around the city over the summer. He noted that there was so much to do and that events were all always well attended. “When we started, we weren’t really sure how the city was doing. But luckily for the project and for the community, a corner was turning as we hit the streets. People were taking risks, opening new businesses, forming groups,and we caught the wave.” Reichert added, “A year later, we can answer with certainty. Yes. The city is very much alive and growing.

 

*AUTHOR’S BONUS NOTE FOR CINEASTES – Bognar told me that Zeega is named after Dziga Vertov – director of the masterpiece MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA. This is a great treat for film lovers. Vertov’s films and theories influenced the cinema verite movement…which pushed “non-fiction storytelling into unchartered territory.”

THE MASTER Opens Friday at THE NEON

The Toronto International Film Festival was great. I saw 29 films in 9 days (plus a few partials). If you’re interested to know about the movies I saw, click the picture below to be directed to my blog . In the coming days (once I’m caught up on NEON matters), I’ll post one last entry with my wrap-up. For now, I hope you enjoy this little collage of some of the people I saw during introductions and Q&As. These are all from pictures I took at the festival. Can you name everyone? At THE NEON, we’re moving forward again this week. FAREWELL, MY QUEEN did not perform well enough to stick around for a second week. This film broke records over the weekend in NYC and LA, and we’re hoping that fans of Paul Thomas Anderson (THERE WILL BE BLOOD, MAGNOLIA and BOOGIE NIGHTS) will be out en masse. Holy Ghost Tent Revival

On Sunday, August 19th, WYSO 91.3FM will present a free summer concert at RiverScape MetroPark featuring Holy Ghost Tent Revival. Local musicians Todd the Fox and Daniel Dye and the Miller Road band will also perform.

“We’re looking forward to another great gathering of the WYSO community,” says WYSO Music Director Niki Dakota. “It’s a great treat to bring live music to the Miami Valley.”

Hailing from Greensboro, NC, Holy Ghost Tent Revival has built a reputation for highly energetic live performances. The six-piece band blends Dixieland and ragtime inspired folk with rock and roll and a horn section for a memorable sound. Since 2009, Holy Ghost Tent Revival has played 300 live shows a year including several previous stops in the Miami Valley. Their third studio album, Sweat Like the Old Days, will be released later this year.

Dayton-based singer/songwriter Todd the Fox mixes blues, folk, bluegrass and rock and roll influences to create what he calls “Hyper Delta Blues.” Performing with a resonator guitar and homemade suitcase drum and accompanied by a washboard, Todd the Fox delivers a fun, engaging live show.

Openers Daniel Dye and the Miller Road Band are a Springfield family band made up of front-man Daniel Dye and his nieces and nephews. This all-acoustic group is making a name for itself with a softly powerful Americana sound.

“Bring the whole family as we celebrate WYSO music and its ability to bring us together,” says Dakota.

The concert begins at 6pm. Food will be sold at RiverScape’s Cafe Velo, and craft beer will also be for sale. Families are encouraged to attend and bring chairs or blankets for seating. Free admission is made possible by support from Wagner Subaru, Freund Freeze and Arnold, and the University of Dayton Department of Continuing Education.

See the New Studios at WYSO’s Open House

On Sunday, June 24, public radio station WYSO will hold an open house at their new studios at 150 E. South College Street in Yellow Springs.

From 1pm til 5 pm, there will be live music and spoken word events in the new, expanded performance space. Visitors will have a chance to tour the new facilities, meet WYSO staff and resource board members, and to record a greeting in one of the new production booths.

On the same day, WYSO will officially power up to fifty thousand watts. A new transmitter and antenna have already been installed and tested. WYSO has also launched their annual fiscal year end fund drive and will be “selling watts for WYSO.”

Listeners can “buy” watts for two dollars each and help WYSO raise funds. Everyone who gives two dollars or more during June will receive a certificate.

During the Open House on June 24 there will be many musical and spoken work guests including Wheels from Yellow Springs, Dayton blues band Miss Lissa and Co and Ohio Heritage Fellow Rick Good, with more performers to be announced soon.

“Our open house will be fun and family-friendly,” says WYSO general manager Neenah Ellis. “ We’ll have snacks and drinks available and activities for kids as well.”

In addition to four consecutive hours of live music and spoken word guests, hosted by WYSO Music Director Niki Dakota, visitors will be allowed to record themselves and their families in new WYSO production booths. “We hope people will come and see what a community-friendly new space we have,” says Ellis.

Antioch University, which holds the WYSO license, invested one million dollars to renovate the first floor of the former Kettering Research Lab building for WYSO. The upgraded broadcast facilities were paid for in part by a matching federal grant.

“Antioch invested in WYSO because they recognize our value to the community and to the university,” says Ellis.

Crazy Joe with Ricky Nye, Inc. and Wheels to Perform at WYSO’s Community Concert

Get your dancing shoes on, WYSO’s free community concert is Sunday, August 21st at Riverscape MetroPark featuring Crazy Joe with Ricky Nye, Inc. and Wheels.

“This year’s WYSO Community Concert is a joyful celebration of Miami Valley music,” say WYSO Music Director, Niki Dakota. “From the very young stringband, Wheels, to the established powerhouses of Crazy Joe and Ricky Nye, it is an honor to present these talented members of our community.”

“Crazy” Joe Tritschler is a roots music guitarist, singer, songwriter, and occasional drummer, who has toured nationally and internationally with his own Mad River Outlaws as well as roots music legend Deke Dickerson. He has released several recordings with ATOM Records and his own O-Scope Recording Company. He has a unique musical vision that includes early rock & roll, rockabilly, and original country with dashes of soul, jazz, and heavy rock.

Formerly know as “The Swingin’ Mudbugs,” Ricky Nye, Inc. features Ricky Nye (piano, vocals) along with Brian Aylor (drums) and Chris Douglas (upright bass), playing elegant blues and ballads, New Orleans stylings and traditional boogie woogie.

Wheels

Opening band Wheels delivers high energy Americana music that mixes traditional Bluegrass with progressive rock and roll. This young band has performed at many local and regional venues and recently celebrated the release of their debut album, Fields on Fire.

“The concert is a chance to revel in the musical richness of our region. And a chance to come together and show appreciation to those that make it all possible: our listeners,” says Dakota.

The concert begins at 6pm. Food will be sold at Riverscape’s Café Vélo, and Archer’s Tavern will be selling alcoholic beverages. Admission is free and families are encouraged to attend.

Buffalo Killers To Unveil New Songs on Kaleidoscope, Perform at Peach’s Grill

Tonight you can catch the Buffalo Killers live on the air on WYSO during Kaleidoscope.  They’re performing at Peach’s Grill in Yellow Springs on Friday, May 27th beginning at 10pm.  On tonight’s radio show, which begins at 8pm, the band will unveil some new songs from the album they’re releasing later this summer.  The local release party for “3,” is scheduled for Friday, July 15th at Canal Street Tavern.  The Buffalo Killers will be joined onstage by R.Ring, a collaboration between Kelley Deal and Mike Montgomery that recently did a month long residency at South Park Tavern.  You can hear a preview track from “3” by clicking here.

Like most public radio stations around the country, twice a year WYSO puts the call out looking for listener support.  This week marks WYSO’s Spring Pledge drive where there’s a special focus on upping the station’s membership from 5% of its listening audience to 10%.

On Kaleidoscope, I’ll be celebrating all of the great local music that WYSO brings to the airwaves with my radio partner in crime and fellow Dayton MostMetro contributor, Gladgirl, and The Motel Beds.  We’ll be offering their latest album, Sunfried Dreams as a thank you gift for pledges, and the band will unveil an extra special new recording on the air.  Tune in at 8pm on 91.3FM or wyso.org for all that and our usual round up of great music from local and national artists.  And if you are thus inclined to make a pledge of support to WYSO, here’s the link.

Louisville’s The Fervor have been making a name for themselves here in Dayton having performed at Canal Street Tavern and more recently, South Park Tavern. The band will return to SPT tonight to celebrate the release of their new album, Arise, Great Warrior on Karate Body Records. They’ll share the bill with the Smug Brothers and the Motel Beds, who recently finished their new album, Sunfried Dreams and are currently streaming it on their bandcamp site.  You can find show details at the DMM events calendar.
