Support Women Thriving Beyond Cancer Diagnoses at AWEAR AFFAIR

February 16, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Join cancer survivors celebrating Bravery and Courage with a THE GREATEST SHOWMAN theme for the 17th annual Awear Affair Fashion Show and Luncheon to benefit the Noble Circle Project on Saturday, February 29th from 10am -2pm  at the Ponitz Center at Sinclair Community College. This inspiring and fun event begins with raffle baskets and boutique shopping as more than 20 small business merchants offer a wonderful array of hand-crafted gifts, unique jewelry, home décor, clothing and accessories.

Lunch is served at noon and followed by a fashion show featuring clothing from Zig Zag Gallery, Pieces of Style, and Senses. All models are members of The Noble Circle Project who are intending to thrive beyond their cancer diagnoses.

Please come enjoy good food and entertainment while supporting the programs of Noble Circle for women living with cancer diagnoses.

Since 2004, the annual AWear Affair Fashion Show Luncheon has been held on the last Saturday in February. This highly anticipated event makes it possible for women diagnosed with cancer to participate in the New Sister Program and Project Sisterhood program at no charge. AWear Affair begins at 10:00 am with shopping at local vendors where attendees can explore and purchase items ranging from jewelry, to gourmet foods, to one-of-a-kind apparel and works of art. The luncheon, program, entertainment, and fashion show, – featuring Noble Circle Sisters modeling the newest fashions – begins at noon.

Pre-register for the AWear Affair Fashion Show & luncheon online.  The event will be held in Building 12, the Ponitz Center at Sinclair Community College, 444 W. 3rd Street, Dayton, OH 45402.

About The Noble Circle Project

The Noble Circle Project was founded in 2003 by eight local women coping with their own cancer diagnosis. These courageous women learned how to navigate the treatment process, support each other, and seek out ways to take charge of their cancer journey. They were united in the belief they could use their personal experiences to help other women “thrive” beyond cancer.

The Noble Circle Project is committed to creating an intimate and caring community of women thriving beyond cancer by bringing hope, inspiration, empowerment and well-being through programs focusing on nutritional education, complementary energy techniques, and peer support. The next New Sister Program Retreat is scheduled for March 2020.

A wise man once said, “The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change” and that’s one thing that those of us at the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC  has come to know, understand, adapt to, and appreciate!  After all without change things become boring, stagnant, and let’s face it predictable–all things that Fashion should never become!  So with that being said, the Dayton Emerging Fashion Incubator (DE-FI) LLC is excited to announce changes to our schedule of events for May!! 😀

Originally it was announced that we would be having our very first Fashion Week May 6-10, however after revisiting our ultimate goal and mission which is to provide support for area and independent designers and then reviewing our own availability from Models (most of whom are in school age and or in college during the week), our very own staff (all of which have day jobs and faced a few scheduling issues), a few participating designers(who were only available during the weekend), and of course one of our main events conflicted with one of the largest events in Downtown—URBAN NIGHTS!!  So after careful thought and consideration, it was decided that “(DE-FI)ance Fashion Week” should be consolidated into a weekend event and hence “A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance” was born!!

So without further ado, we are proud to announce the schedule for (DE-FI)ance Fashion Week which will kick off during the largest street party in Dayton—URBAN NIGHTS!!

A Weekend of (DE-FI)ance Kicks Off during Urban Nights May 9!!

Zig Zag Gallery To Host Soup Fundraiser

October 4, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

Kim Megginson and her partner Brad Abbey at the Centerville gift shop are both potters, so it’s no surprise that they are celebrating American Craft Week.  As a part of the festivities, they will host their annual Soup for CERF fundraiser.  On Thurs Oct 6th and Fri Oct 7th from 5 – 8pm the Cross Pointe Gallery will be serving up soup.  The annual benefit for the Craft Emergency Relief Fund is part of a 15 year national relief effort that supports professional crafters when personal or natural disasters strike

Zig Zag Gallery will have a selection of pottery bowls donated by both local and national potters. Guests will choose their bowl  and fill it with a soup dinner provided byFlavors Eatery, Meadowlark Restaurant, Ashley’s Pastry Shop, Dorothy Lane Market and more!

For a $10 donation guests go home with a bowl and ZIG ZAG sends the money to the national fund that helps artists through direct financial and educational assistance to crafters,  including emergency relief assistance, business development support, and resources and referrals on topics such as health, safety, and insurance.

Of course while you’re there, you might want to check out the displays by local artists, shop the unique gift selections or pick up the latest charms for your Pandora bracelet.

Art Is Life-Giving.

January 8, 2011 By Marsha Pippenger Leave a Comment

DMM welcomes our newest columnist Marsha Pippenger who will blog about art in our region.

Some New Year’s Thoughts 2011

Art is life-giving.

It’s an intangible. How can you explain to someone who has never experienced the power of

Medusa-a-Tangled-Web by Marsha Pippenger

a piece of work, something that has sprung from the thought of one human being, brought into existence due to that person’s trials and errors, sweat, mental anguish, trying to get it right, to make physical that which he or she sees in the mind’s eye? Art adds life – to the walls of your home, your cubicle at work, your city parks, the very roadways you travel – breath and thought and feeling and connection, a communication offered from the artist to you.

It was a difficult year, 2010. Many of us felt the negatives of an economy sliding downhill, jobs moving in not equal to the companies moving out, the broad sweep of cuts to the arts because funds are stretched to the nth degree just to cover the most basic of services. Hard decisions have had to be made. We all want to live in a community with plenty of recreational opportunities and cultural offerings. Most of us realize that in our current world we must get creative to provide those amenities when our cities are pushing to fill empty buildings, entice new enterprise, appeal to and keep our young adult residents.

Daniel and the lions den mosaic by K12 Gallery students

This is why we need the life sustaining power of art more than ever, and it is also why it is time for those of us who live and breathe and work in the arts to do more – I know, I know, we all are always being asked to do more – but small things can truly add up to big accomplishments. There is strength in numbers, and while competition is healthy, there really is great power in collaboration.

Dayton is remarkable in its offerings in the arts; it has more than most cities its size (a provable statistic by the way). We have more talented professional artists than most, we have fine galleries that could use more traffic and support, and we have an art institute that rivals those of many larger metropolitan areas. Dayton has been blessed by the philanthropy of past citizens who loved this city and its people; we are still enjoying the fruits of that generosity today. Moreover, we are charged with living up to that legacy. We need to, now more than ever before.

NOW, what is that next step? Patronizing art spaces of course. Listed below (in random order so keep reading) are some fine commercial galleries, museums and art centers where you will find quality original art in a range of prices. It is by no means a definitive list; if you know of others, please add them!
