Soup For You!

December 6, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Craving some soup to warm you up?  From the first steaming spoonful, to that little bit of liquid left in the bottom, these are the best bowls of chow that the Miami Valley has to offer.  So, all you serious eaters, get a spoon, get some crackers if need be, and check out our list of MUST EAT soups.

With some help from our Dayton Foodies group, we’ve pulled together some recommendation for Dayton tastiest soups:

FRENCH ONION SOUP

Any one of Doubleday’s soups could make this list.  In a restaurant known for their homemade soups, this one is a favorite.  Dayton  regulars have stuffed the restaurant for decades, and many have felt the hot, gooey dripping flavor of the french onion soup. Other top mentions for French onion include The Oakwood Club, Buckhorn Tavern and The Paragon Super Club.

THE NEW ORLEANS STYLE GUMBO

New Orleans Gumbo from Jimmie’s Ladder 11

Hearty, rich and just the right spiciness, this soup is one of those “OMG” moments when you take a bite. Known for a strongly flavored stock, meat or shellfish (or sometimes both), a thickener, and the Creole “holy trinity”: celery, bell peppers, and onions. Gumbo is often categorized by the type of thickener used, whether okra or filé powder (dried and ground sassafras leaves). It’s been said that Jimmie’s Ladder 11 has the best gumbo outside of the big easy, but  Sands ands Seafood and Sports is fast gaining on them. For a different take on gumbo check out DiSalvo’s Deli for their chicken gumbo. Perfectly carved, generous chicken pieces, line a delicately light broth.  The bowl is filled with a treasure trove of vegetables and tremendous flavor. You’ll also find it at Rip Rap Roadhouse and Rip Rap Roadhouse.

CLAM CHOWDER

Jay’s Clam Chowder, a Dayton original

This  is a soup with cream or milk mixed with ingredients such as potatoes, sweet corn, smoked haddock, clams and prawns, etc. Some cream-style chowders do not use cream, and are instead prepared using milk and a roux to thicken them.  The creamy broth, the chunks of fresh clams, and the perfect dash of pepper make this soup. Seajax, Club Oceano, Smith’s Boathouse, Bullwinkles and Jay’s Seafood, Treasure Island all have raves for their New England Clam Chowder.

HOT & SOUR SOUP
It happens to be one of the healthiest mushroom soup recipes in the world! A Chinese restaurant favorite, it’s hearty, savory, sour – and as spicy as you want it to be. Filled with mushrooms, tofu and silky egg ribbons, Hot and Sour soup is thickened with cornflour/cornstarch so the broth is beautifully glossy. Fu Mon Lau – hot and sour soup is  packed with veggies, low in calories and low in fat. Authentic Chinese hot and sour soup is considered medicinal as it combines healing chicken broth, circulation improving fungus (mushrooms), and antioxidant packed ginger and vinegar. Flavors Eatery in Centerville offers an original house hot drop which combines the heat of hot and sour with a more traditional egg drop soup.

POTATO SOUP
A creamy soup primarily made with cooked potatoes, broth, mil or cream and ofen includes aromatics like onion, celery and garlic.  It’s often topped with  bacon bits, cheese, and green onions depending on the recipe.  Local favorites include The Famous, Salt Block. Biscuit Company, Bullwinkles, Grist, The Dublin Pub and Corner Kitchen,  Try Tony & Pete’s for a sweet potato version.

CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP
This comforting  soup is usally made with  with shredded chicken, black beans, and corn  and topped with tortilla strips its full of flavor, and very filling! Some of the place you’ll find it are Charlie’s Deli,  Mi Lindo Jalisco Mexican Restaurant And Bar, Big Sky Bread Company and El Meson.

POZOLE
A traditional soup or stew from Mexican cuisine. It is made from hominy and typically chicken or pork), and can be seasoned and garnished with shredded lettuce or cabbage, chilivpeppers, onion, garlic, radishes, avocado, salsa or limes.  It’s time-consuming to make, so restaurants will usually only serve it on the weekends.  The owner of Chiapas Mexican Grill tells us he uses grandmother’s recipe for a chicken and hominy soup.  The broth is soothing yet spicy.  The chicken is tender and shreds of it soak between hominy corn.  Radishes float on top of this beautiful looking soup.  One of the most unique soups on this list, it is authentic Mexican fare. You can also find it at Sueno, Taqueria Mixteca, El Vaquero Mexican Restaurant in Franklin and La Michoacana Mexican Market & Restaurant

El Meson

BLACK BEAN SOUP

This flavorful and hearty soup is a staple in Latino cuisine, made with black beans, onion, garlic, pepper, ham hock, olive oil and a bit of vinegar. Pictured here from El Meson, also check it out at  Jorrge’s Reataurant Cantina,  Nelly’s A Taste of Bolivia and Elsa’s .

CABBAGE ROLL SOUP

You can find it at Village Family Restaurant in Waynesville, Our Place on West Third and sometimes at @Jimmie’s Ladder 11 on Brown Street

TOM KAI SOUP (Coconut Soup)

Rich and creamy yet tangy and salty, this Thai coconut chicken soup recipe is filling but light and positively bursting with flavor from Coconut milk soup, mushroom, galangal root, citrus leaves, lime juice. You can get it made with chicken or veggies or the  Seafood Combo (Shrimp, Scallops, Squid) Also availaable from rom Massaman Thai Cuisine, also popular at Penn’s Thai Grille, Thai Table, Sky Asian Cuisine, Singa Thai and White Lotus.

WHITE CHICKEN CHILI
Archer’s Tavern, Stone House Tavern in Waynesville, Rays Wine Spirits Grill in Clayton and Dorothy Lane Market and Rip Rap Roadhouse

SPECIALTY SOUPS:

THE TURTLE SOUP at THE AMBER ROSE:

Amber Rose Turtle Soup

This soup is exotic, thick and hearty.  It is an old recipe, passed down by Elinore, the previous owner of the restaurant.   This is one of those things that you eat and immediately want more.  Visit Joe Castellano and his chefs and try it for yourself as an appetizer to one of their Eastern European meals.

THE PICKLE SOUP from BLIND BOB’S:
Don’t be fooled by the sound of it, don’t judge a book by its cover.  This is one of the best soups in Dayton.  The flavor isn’t sharp, it is surprisingly mild and rich.  If you like cream of broccoli soup, this is an even better spin on it.  This is a great warm up right before you try one of their burger selections!

THE SIZZLING RICE SOUP FROM CHINA COTTAGE:
For decades they have been serving this white meat chicken, fresh vegetables and steaming rice kernels in an unforgettable broth.  The flavor is a perfect balance of mushrooms, carrots, other vegetables and rice in a white meat chicken and broth mixture.  North China also has a good one.

SEAFOOD PHO  from Pho Mi in Miamisburg
Pho is a veitnamese soup made with broth, rice noodles and herbs and is know asthe national dish of Vietnam.  The seafood version is loaded with shrimp, crab meat and squid, and is simply delicious.

SPICY VEGETABLE SOUP from KABUKI. This soup  is a fantastic mix of spicy pepper broth, bean sprouts and onions.  This can clear your sinuses and make your cold feel better all at the same time.  It is the perfect tune up for a sushi feast.  Enjoy the color and aroma of the soup, it tastes as good as it looks.

Soup Flights:  Giovanni’s in Fairborn offers 3 cups of soup and 2 breadsticks for $14.99. Choose from a rotating soup menu. Black Rock Bar & Grill near Fairfield Commons offers SOUP-3-WAYZ – Choose 3 of your favorites for  – 9.99

Also don’t forget to check out Dorothy Lane Market for a daily selection of housemade soups.  They usually have four or five featured soups, including vegetarian  and gluten free options.  Check here to check out the soup of the day selections.

Have we missed your favorite soup?  Tell us about it in the comments below.

Pizza Hut Brings Back Triple Treat Box

December 4, 2025 By Dayton937

Pizza Hut is getting into the holiday spirit with a cozy new collaboration.

The chain has brought back its popular Triple Treat Box, which contains two medium one-topping pizzas, five breadsticks, and a choice of dessert, all served in a newly designed festive holiday box.

The box serves as inspiration for the new Triple Treat Box onesie, an all-in-one garment featuring the same designs. Launched in time for National Ugly Sweater Day on Dec. 19, the red, white and green graphic onesie was created in partnership with holiday clothing maker Tipsy Elves. It is available for $89.95 in both men’s and women’s sizes here, while supplies last.

The Triple Treat Box is available for a limited time and is supported by an ad campaign starring quarterback Josh Allen.  Allen reminds fans to “go hard” for the holidays, while wearing a pizza-themed Christmas sweater (which is also available from Tipsy Elves).

Another  campaign spot depicts the chaos that ensues when a holiday guest brings a real live reindeer to Christmas dinner.

Gluten Free Bakery Announces Closing

December 3, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

After 12½ years of love, flour, tears, triumphs, and community, The Neighborhood Nest in Fairborn will be closing their bakery on December 31, 2025. Owner Amber Tipton posted this today on her social media:
“This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life. The Nest was never just a bakery—it was a safe haven for the allergy community, a place where people could finally exhale and enjoy food made with care. Together, we built something rare and beautiful. I will forever be grateful for the community we curated and the trust you placed in us.
Unfortunately, the financial reality has become impossible to sustain. Over the last year, food costs have risen anywhere from 20% to 50%, utilities have continued to climb, and in January our lease is set to double—even though we already struggle to meet our current rent. We have poured every ounce of personal financial resources into keeping our doors open, but we simply have no more to give.
To every customer who has been part of The Nest family: thank you. Thank you for supporting us, believing in us, and sharing your lives with us. Thank you for the conversations, the laughter, the tears, and the humanity. The relationships I’ve had with you—and with my incredible staff—are what made these 12½ years richer than I ever could have imagined.
We hope to make this last month as sweet and meaningful as possible.
With endless gratitude and love,

– Amber & The Nest Team

On a personal note, I wanted to share that Amber has the biggest heart, often the first one to offer to help on local fundraisers, or to feed our community during the furlough and SNAP issues.  I am so sad for her and her staff and wish them all the very best as the head on to the next chapter.

She’ll be open for the month of December, let’s send her out on a high note- stop on by for some fabulous cinnamon roles, breads, pies and other treats.

Enjoy the Ride ‘Back to the Future!’

December 3, 2025 By Joshua Stucky

‘Oh My God….that car was amazing!’  ‘The backdrops were eye-popping!’ ‘I loved the tongue-in-cheek musical numbers!’

‘Back to the Future’ at the Schuster, is a free-wheeling tribute to the beloved movie, and a lot more! Although the songs, which at times can feel a little bit karaoke, are full-on fun and silly, you often lose focus on a cast that is giving it their all throughout the romp. I couldn’t help but notice that folks were anxious in the first act to see the ‘legendary’ DeLorean and its magical entrance. Meanwhile, a story is being told for all of us as well. Through hi-tech staging…and reminders of days gone by (1985 was 40 years ago….WTF!)….we are thrown into a land of the McFly family which remains true to the form as created for the film. There are some fun, if not over-the-top, intros to each of the family members. Lucas  Marty does a good job of maintaining the look and vibe for movie fans. Mike Bindemann‘s George is funky and endearing. Fisher Lane Stewart gives 110% to the Dave role, and Abbey Freidmann‘s Linda foots the bill. Perhaps the McFly to watch in this performance is Zan Berube‘s Lorraine. She seamlessly does it all…gives you the frump, the fabulous, and ‘freaky’ sides of the mom figure!

The energy picks up in the theatre when David Josefberg‘s take on Doc Brown, hits the stage. Throughout the show, he makes his moments, HIS MOMENTS! Also of note, Cartreze Tucker belting ‘Gotta Start Somewhere’  and the devilish performance by Nathaniel Hackmann as Biff. And yes, the car. The CAR! I didn’t want to like it…almost was dead-set on not liking it…just to be contrary. But the truth is, it’s pretty astounding to watch. Blended with backgrounds that look alive and real (the high school gym scene is a mind-trip!)…the car is, in its own way, another star of the show!

Advice…go into the theatre looking to have a good time. A fun, funny, fantastic frolic awaits….

that kids of all ages will enjoy!

The Dessert Room Opening Dec 11th

December 3, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Charlie Carroll of Hospitalité Group, owners of Table 33 and Lucho have shared they are getting ready to launch a third concept in the Dayton Arcade.  Housed in its own dedicated space connected to Table 33, The Dessert Room is a nostalgic after-dinner destination focused solely on elevated desserts and post-meal cocktails in a very posh atmosphere.
“To start you will have to have a dinner reservation at Table to get a reservation in The Dessert Room. In the new year they will open up some reservations to the public… those that don’t have a table reservation,” says Carroll.  They might even  take a few “Dessert for Dinner” Reservations around 5:00 pm to start.

The Dessert Room Menu

(1) THE CHOCOLATIER’S TABLE (Signature Dessert)
Interactive Dessert Experience for Two or More

A theatrical, tableside indulgence crafted to ignite imagination and delight.

Guests are then invited to dip, swirl, sculpt, and savor using an assortment of playful confections: handcrafted marshmallows, gourmet gummy bears, candied citrus, brittle, toffee shards, and rotating seasonal sweets.

Part artistry, part nostalgia, and entirely unforgettable—The Chocolatier’s Table transforms dessert into a communal experience meant to be explored, shared, and devoured.

(2) PISTACHIO RICOTTA CAKE
Delicate layers of creamy pistachio mousse and whipped sweet ricotta, finished with a decadent Grand Marnier ganache and topped with candied pistachios for a bright, luxurious crunch.

(3) SEASONAL GELATO & MACARONS
Three scoops of smooth, seasonal gelato paired with crisp, colorful macarons — a playful, elegant celebration of texture and flavor.

(4) AFFOGATO CON MOCHA
Silky vanilla bean gelato served table-side with a pour-over of rich coffee and cocoa syrup. Hot meets cold in the most indulgent way.

(5) FLOURLESS BUCKEYE CAKE
A dark, sumptuous chocolate cake inspired by the classic Ohio confection. Finished with a fluffy peanut butter mousse and a drizzle of cocoa syrup.

Family Reopens Italian Restaurant To Honor Franco

December 2, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

This week Franco The Foodie officially reopens Wednesday to Saturday from 3-7pm.  After Franco Gallo passed away in October from complications from a heart transplant, his family has decided to honor his legacy by carrying on the family business, which has just 4 employees.

The Gallo Family

Running the kitchen will be Alexa, Franco’s oldest daughter, who had been cooking by her dads side for several years in the restaurant.  Jess, the younger daughter,  handles the front of the house and customer relations.

While the majority of the business, there is a small seating area where regulars dine in. And just like always, you can expect a weekly changing menu filled with Chef Franco’s delicious recipes. He taught his daughters well, and they’re carrying forward the torch of his labor of love with pride and so much heart.

This week also marks a deeply meaningful milestone: Franco and Karen’s wedding anniversary. On December 2nd, they would have celebrated 33  years of marriage. Thirty-three years ago, they were married in Franco’s hometown of Brindisi, Italy, while Karen was stationed there with the United States Navy, and that’s where their incredible journey of love first began.

So they thought, what better way to reopen than with Franco’s cherished anniversary dish, the one he made every year to celebrate with Karen. This week’s featured special is a beautiful sneak peek of something truly close to Franco’s heart:    Tortelloni Panna, Prosciutto e Funghi
“This time last year, he shared this very Tortellini Panna dish on Living Dayton,  which we  are honored to share with you. From our hearts to yours, thank you. Grazie Mille for allowing us to keep Franco’s spirit, love, and flavors alive. We invite you to come enjoy these amazing dishes that meant so much to him, and now, to our family{ says Gallo.”
“It’s overwhelming with the amount of support we got from the community and the media.  We’re so grateful for the community support our family has received.  Both  Giovanni’s & Copey’s both did fundraisers for us a and we were really wowed- seeing other local businesses who supported us. I just can’t say enough about how heartwarming that is. It’s amazing and I know Franco would be very proud,” Karen shared, getting choked up as she was talking with us.

Swoon – Book Store & Wine Bar Coming to Oakwood

December 2, 2025 By Dayton937

Pop quiz question 1:

What is the best-selling book genre in the world?

Romance novels generate billions of dollars of revenue annually. The romance genre continues to grow in appeal as writers genre-blend, branching into mystery, history, and fantasy, combining emotional depth, relationships, and niche subject popularity—think of Diana J. Gabaldon’s book series, Outlander, which merged multiple genres, featuring elements of historical fiction, romance, mystery, adventure and science fiction/fantasy—which has sold over 50 million books. The Starz network adaptation of the Outlander generated over half a billion dollars in revenue, and the it helped drive the $4.4 billion acquisition of Starz by Lionsgate. Outlander continues to bring in monies through a licensing agreement with Netflix. And Outlander is only one example of how the romance is the genre of market dominance and high profitability.

Pop quiz question 2:

What genre has been met with “relentless hostility” for decades?

Despite its market profitability, romances still grapple with literary stigma, historically, repeatedly, dismissed as “trashy,” “formulaic,” and finally denigrated into “chic lit.” An internet search of romance genre reveals pages and pages of articles attacking and defending the genre. Recent critiques have pulled away from dismissing the genre as a whole and have focused on deconstructing themes within the genre, decrying “unhealthy preoccupations with coercive sex and dominance,” “lack of representative diversity,” “anti-feminist ideals,” and “unrealistic,” portrayals of men. But still the books sell.

Pop quiz question 3:

Which genre has the strongest relationship between author/reader?

Women write eighty three percent of romances. Nathanial Hawthorne may have reviled those “scribbling women,” but the publishing industry has come to rely on the relationships that develop between romance authors and readers to drive sales. Romance authors have a direct and interactive audience that consider themselves a community of readers. Over ninety percent of romance readers are women, and these readers fill social reading sited like Goodreads and StoryGraph, fiction apps like Dreame and Wattpad, and drive publisher specific site development like Harlequin online.

Romance is a business, and the business of romance is good.

If you knew the answer to these questions, then, like me, you are going to be excited by what comes next.

Dayton is about to have a bookstore and wine bar dedicated solely to romance. When I heard that, I thought “what a good idea.” When I talked with Lauren Gay and Lindsay Woodruff about the plans for Swoon Books & Wine, I practically swooned myself with excitement. Swoon Books and Wine, coming to 2504 Far Hills Avenue, will be romance made manifest. The space will have a rococo interior, wine, full bar, and treats–both savory and sweet–from local food partners. All the books will be romances.

“We’re creating a space where a community of readers can immerse themselves in a genre they love,” Woodruff says. “It’s all about the ambience,” Gay says, “we are creating a place that will reflect the romantic experience and capture that happy ending feeling.”

Curating a space to embody a feeling is not new to Woodruff and Gay. Woodruff started Maraluna, an artisan home goods store that ensures all products are ethically produced, in Troy almost a decade ago. Since then, she has relocated it to Oakwood, and again to a larger space at 2316 Far Hills Ave. Despite the moves, Maraluna thrives, because Woodruff creates a warm and inviting atmosphere in every location. Lauren Gay also is passionate about curating her spaces to create the right vibes. A CMS certified sommelier and the owner of Joui Wine, at 117 E. Third St. in the Fire Blocks district, Gay’s passion for curating is evident. At Joui, the focus is not only on selecting just the right wine for her guests, but also about crafting the wine experience.

With this track record of success and their shared love of reading, Swoon Books and Wine promises to be a beloved spot to hang out and read. But what I loved about interviewing them is that these women are not only romance readers, but they are also like the women in the books they love: smart, talented, creators of their own destiny. And lucky for Dayton, they are also experienced entrepreneurs, creating the community they want to live in, one storefront at a time.

If you can’t wait to Swoon, you will be excited to hear they now have TWO ways you can join the fun now — eGift Cards, and the brand new Swoon Book Club!

The Swoon Book Club is launching now with three tiered offerings; each tier features a curated monthly book selection plus varying levels of in store credits, vouchers, and exclusive discounts. Swoon will also offer a limited time discounted three month subscription bundle, ideal for holiday gifting. The Swoon Book Club and eGift Cards are both available now on our website — click the links in the comments below!

DGMC ‘SLAYS’ the HOLIDAYS!

November 30, 2025 By Joshua Stucky

The DGMC is ready to deck the halls for the holidays. Their annual concert, which has been a mainstay of the area for many years, promises another stellar performance. I was so excited to get to speak to member, Marc Driscoll about the upcoming event.
937: Hi Marc. Thanks for spending some time with me to share the word about this year’s concert for DGMC! So, to start, tell me about the history of DGMC‘s Holiday concerts!?
Marc: Thank you, Josh. Members of the Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus and our fans look forward to our holiday show each year. Every year we add a little twist to the show to keep things fresh. Sometimes that means an orchestra, sometimes it’s silly costumes. This year it’s all about bells!
937: Thus the name….
Marc: Yes!! Our theme is Slay Bells Ring this year. We are singing all about bells, including some of your favorite Christmas Carols, as well as a few new songs! We are joined this year by the Gem City Ringers who add a special touch to several of our numbers, and also play a few songs of their own.
937: Love the play on ‘sleigh’ and ‘slay!’  So creative. And adding ringers just seems perfect! Are there any featured singers this time around?
Marc: Baron Creutz sings a beautiful tenor solo on Alleluia. Also,  Jeffrey Sypek and Chris Perry dazzle in “Pure Imagination.”
937: To those of you reading who have not seen the choir in some time, believe me, these guys are such  talents. So, Marc,  what songs do you particularly love performing this time around?
Marc: Carol of the Bells is a Christmas classic and is sure to entrance the audience. Festival Sanctus is simply a gorgeous piece. And Oh! Christmas Tree will have the audience in stitches.
937: You guys always find a way of adding the humor to the concerts, which keeps folks coming back for more! For our readers, what are details for location, price, dates?
Marc: We are back at Westminster Presbyterian in downtown Dayton on December 6th with two shows. One at 2pm and one at 6pm. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at  http://Daytongaymenschorus.org or at the door.
937: As always, break legs…and ring, bring, sing in the Holidays once again for all of us! Is there anything else you liked to mention about the concert, Marc?

Marc: Let’s see….our small group ensemble Noteworthy is back and very excited to sing again! Director Kathy Clark wrote an original piece for the show that will leave toes a tapping. Also, there are opportunities to win raffle baskets filled with amazing prizes.

937: Sounds holiday ‘ish!’ Love it! Thanks Marc, and thanks yo all of the DGMC for spreading a little magic this season!
