Third Perk Express Now Open at Fairfield Commons

December 3, 2022 By Dayton937

It’s opening day for the Third Perk Express  at the Mall at Fairfield Common. Third Perk Express is a sister cafe of Third Perk Coffeehouse which opened its doors in downtown Dayton in 2015. The cafe quickly became a Dayton favorite for meetings, grabbing premium coffee and a delicious chicken salad sandwich. Third Perk has become known as the ‘People’s Coffeehouse’. This title was earned because Third Perk is a space where everyone is welcomed and valued.  The first Third Per Express was opened inside the Gem City  Market on Salem Ave.

Third Perk Express signed a lease to enter the mall in 2021. Many challenges delayed progress on the project. Owner Juanita- Michelle makes a promise to PERK UP the mall! Third Perk Express is the only coffee specialty company within the mall. Third Perk will offer many drink options to customers. Beside coffee drinks you can also get smoothies, fruit, oatmeal, bagels and muffins.

Customers will have options in placing orders. Customers can visit the cafe which is on the second floor of the mall in the food court, located between Auntie Annie’s Pretzels and Chick-A-Fila. Customers can also place orders online at www.thirdperk.com. You will also be able to get delivery using  Door Dash.

Red Lobster Introduces Cheddar Bay Shrimp,

December 2, 2022 By Dayton937

Attention Cheddar Bay Biscuit lovers! You’re in for a treat because there’s a new dish at Red Lobster that’s inspired by the restaurant’s famous biscuits. This week, Red Lobster announced Cheddar Bay Shrimp, a new addition to the Create Your Own Ultimate Feast menu. Cheddar Bay Shrimp feature a crispy batter that mimics the flavor of the buttery, garlicky biscuits we just can’t seem to resist.

“Everyone loves our Cheddar Bay Biscuits, and our shrimp is a close second favorite, so it just made sense to finally put the two together! This first-ever mash-up is crispy, crunchy and full of flavor that will keep you coming back for more,” said Patty Trevino, Chief Marketing Officer at Red Lobster.

When ordering the Create Your Own Ultimate Feast, you can choose four of ten new and classic preparations, including two premium selections and two shrimp selections. You’ll also have your choice of two sides.

In addition to the Cheddar Bay Shrimp, Red Lobster has also introduced a handful of festive cocktails, including Snowglobe Sangria, Fireside Martini, and Cran-Apple Smash.

And if you’d like to take your Cheddar Bay love beyond biscuits and shrimp this holiday season, Red Lobster is currently selling a Cheddar Bay Sleigh Ugly Sweater online for $45.

You can also select Red Lobster Christmas Tree Ornaments, a hoodie, tote bag or even a snow globe.

Kettering City BBQ Opens Dec 1st!

November 30, 2022 By Bryan Suddith

City BBQ is smoking in Kettering this week. For some of us BBQ fans the wait is over. Today I stopped by to see the place and grab some lunch a few days ahead of the official opening.
The building is great, a reimagined space that was formerly both Rapid Fire Pizza and built originally as a Krispy Kreme store and production facility.
This City BBQ location boasts a drive thru that many other locations in the region do not have.
Today we had the brisket sandwich and sampled three of their best sides, collards, corn pudding and the slaw. The surprise guest was the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich that was topped with slaw, spicy mayo and pickles. Two sandwiches, three sides (big enough to share) and an iced tea came in under $30.00.
Their full menu, including the pulled pork, smoked chicken, sausage, and ribs will be available Thursday the 1st when they fully open to the public.

Cheeky Meat Pies, the sellers of the New Zealand sandwich sized pies have become a staple at the 2nd Street Market.  You can pick up a hot buy or grab them frozen to cook ahead later. Some of their top sellers include The Kiwi Classic- Tender‎ chunks of tender roast in an onion gravy with Monterey jack cheese encased in a tasty flaky crust. The Tandoori Chook -is chopped chicken breast and potato in mildly spicy tandoori sauce encased in a tasty flaky crust and the Naughty Bird-  Chunks of chicken breast in a rich buttery cream spicy sauce with rice

But you better act quick as today they posted this note on their Facebook page:

“We have decided, after long deliberation, that we are closing at the end of the year. We are currently looking for a buyer.

We will be selling hot and frozen pies thru Sunday, Dec 11th. We will then be back on Dec 23rd to sell just the remaining frozen pies.

We have loved doing this for so many years but it’s time for us to move on. We wish you all well and thank you for supporting us.”

Centerville’s Seafood Restaurant Closing

November 28, 2022 By Dayton937

The rumors have been floating around, folks have seen kitchen equipment for sale on local auction sights and finally the truth is out. Owner Lisa posted this today on the Sweeney’s Seafood Bar and Grill Facebook page:

It is bittersweet writing this last post to Sweeney’s Seafood Bar & Grill’s loyal customers and fans but I must let you know….Saturday December 3rd, 2022 with be the last day we will be open for business.
I have decided to retire and move to Denver to be with my family. I have been blessed with support and loyalty throughout the last 10 plus years. The memories will be with me forever! I always wanted a to own a restaurant which not only provided top notch food and service but was comfortable and guests considered it a home away from home….I did succeed thanks to all of you! Sweeney’s Seafood Bar & Grill has been more my home than the place I go home to at night so it was a very tough decision. But it is time to start my life’s next chapter. Please know leaving my friends and faces at Sweeney’s has brought continual tears during this decision process. How I wish I could have it all….
Holley and Larry, my two partners, are continuing their travels throughout the world and visiting with their family. Owning a restaurant was something they never imagined in their life but upon reflection would not give up one day of the past 10 plus years for anything. What a great time it has been with all the experiences and so many new friends made at Sweeney’s Seafood Bar & Grill. None of this will ever be forgotten….
Sweeney’s will have regular hours through Saturday night and we kindly ask for reservations if you know in advance you are coming….
Again there is no way to express the Thanks that are in my heart …..Take Care!
Lisa
Originally opened by Ron and Christine Sweeney 28 years ago, before they sold it and opened SeaJax Tavern in Kettering, Lisa Long and partners  bought the 160 seat restaurant  in 2012. They listed the restaurant for sale this past October, but without any takers made the decision to close.

Neighborhood Bakery to Close Dec 17th

November 28, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

A bakery has been on the corner of 700 Troy Street for 125 years.  In 1969 Bill Evans bought the business and ran Evans Bakery with his family  for about 35 years before he sold it in 2004.  That new owner operated it for about 7 years, but eventually closed it.  Evans, who still owned the building, found a new owner for the business, his daughter Jennifer.

Jennifer has never envisioned herself running the bakery.  She’d gotten an engineering degree and had been working in that field for about 15 years in Michigan. But she was looking for a change, and her partner Matt Tepper, who was a city manager in the Detroit area, also felt the need for a change.  So they both moved to Dayton and on Dec 17th of 2012 they reopened Evans Bakery. Jennifer felt inspired to restore the bakery and bring vibrancy to the neighborhood she’d grown up in.

And for ten years, six days a week she worked 16 hours days baking.  She says making their biggest seller, their donuts takes up half of that time.  Jennifer shared that though an introvert, she has loved getting to know her neighbors and regulars through the bakery. She told us about one of her regulars, who became a friend, “Toshio who commissioned this amazing rendering of our beloved bakery. The very talented Loretta Puncer Art captured every last detail to perfection. Now while you’re admiring our showcase of donuts, pastries and baked goods you can also admire fine art.”

Artist Loretta Puncer, Jennifer Evans, Toshio and Matt Tepper

Jennifer says, “it’s been a wonderful 10 years and it’s hard to articulate exactly why, but this is hard work, my body is starting to break down and I want more time for other things, but the bakery consumes my life.”

One of the things she’s looking forward to is the freedom to travel up to Michigan to visit her daughter and grandkids.  You can hear the joy in her voice when she shared how thrilling it was be there over Thanksgiving, when her 2nd grandchild came home from the hospital.

So on Thursday, December 17th, exactly 10 years from the day she started as the bakery owner,  when she locks the doors at their 3pm closing time, it will be for the last time.   Though she does say they will fulfill holiday orders of pies, breads, and cookies placed by Dec 17th for pick up through Dec 24th, but no more donuts.

Puncer’s painting of the bakery.

And while she says she looks forward to never baking another thing, she’s happy to entertain offers from others that may want to lease or buy the bakery and or the building.  She’s also quick to point out she’s not leaving the neighborhood.  She lives above the bakery currently and has several rental properties in the neighborhood.
