Wizard of Za To Open On Brown Street

November 11, 2022 By Bryan Suddith

Brown Street adds pizza to the line up with the addition of Columbus based Wizard of Za Pizza. Housed in the location formerly occupied by Zombie Dogs, the restaurant group behind Hunny Bee’s chicken and Fusion brought the Wizard to Dayton in a fun renovated space.
Wizard of Za pizza is not Detroit style as described by local pizza aficionado Jim Chrissis. He says this is a solid take on a Sicilian pizza with a really good focaccia base. Rumor has it the starter for the dough came to Ohio from Sicily. The dough is featured prominently in the artwork adorning the brightly painted walls.
We had the Pepperoni Pizza ($22 for the full size, feeds 3-4) with that extra charred cupped up pepperoni, red sauce, and mozzarella. We opted for the “Gimme It All” toppings which included parmesan cheese, olive oil, fresh basil and a hot honey drizzle. I will be back for this pie again soon. We sampled the cheesy bread, ($7 for a  large order) garlic knots ($5 for a small order)  and the meatballs ($7). The meatballs were full of flavor and the marinara was surprisingly spicy.
The menu has pizza for all tastes and an alternate vodka sauce is an option if you want to move away from the traditional red pizza sauce. Pesto, Hawaiian, Sausage, Cheese Pie and an all tomato pie make the list as well.  The menu offers full pizzas like we shared, personal sized pizzas as well as individual slices for a quick grab and go lunch. Very fitting for the location.
We loved seeing Killer Brownie as the sole provider of sweets on the menu. The only thing missing was a fresh salad offering.
Set to open early next week this is a great addition to the strip of restaurants that includes Fusion, Potbelly, BibiBop and Hunny Bee’s Chicken.

The Wizard of Za

1200 Brown St.
Dayton, OH 45409
Opens to the public Tues, Nov 15th.

Soul Food Pop Up Shop Serving Out of Butter Cafe

November 10, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Chris Hunter spent 17 years in prison on a non-violent drug charge, and spent his time cooking in prison kitchens. With hard word and earned time for good behavior he was released early this past May.  He quickly got a job working at Butter Cafe. After working there a few months, he approached Amy, the owner, about being able to do a pop up business out of the building, similar to how Isiah Davis of The Cookieologist launched his business.  Chris has been eager to use his  second chance, to share the flavorful soul food he loves to cook.

He’s operating a pop-up shop operating out of the Butter Cafe kitchen on Brown Street.  You can pick up your orders out of the window on the south sided of the building from 4-9pm  everyday except Tuesday.

His menu includes nachos, chicken and pepperoni stromboli, pork chop platters and sides like fresh collard greens, baked macaroni and cheese, fried cabbage and A New Soul rice.  Chris shared he’ll soonbe adding fried catfish to the menu.

November 8, 2022 By Dayton937

In 1916, a group of civic-minded women met to plan the establishment of an organization to provide women of the area with a center for social, civic, and literary activities. John H. OHLQ Autumn Bourbon Bottle Lottery

November 7, 2022 By Dayton937

Ohio Liquor is conducting an online lottery to give as many Ohioans as possible a chance to purchase a bottle from the OHLQ Autumn Bottle Lottery, with prices ranging from $49.99 (plus tax) to $259.99 (plus tax).

OHLQ bottle lotteries are open to any Ohio resident who is of legal drinking age, who has a valid Ohio driver’s license or state-issued ID card, and who meets the eligibility requirements outlined below. Military service members on active duty, in the reserves, or members of the National Guard stationed in Ohio on orders are also eligible to enter.

The Ohio Bottle Lottery is limited to one entry per person, meaning that you may only enter each lottery once.
If a lottery features multiple bottles you may enter for any or all of those bottles, but are only eligible to win one bottle.
Winners have the right to purchase one bottle at retail price plus tax at the OHLQ store they selected in their entry form. Bottles are for personal use, not for resale.

BOTTLE TASTING NOTES:

COLONEL E.H. TAYLOR BARREL PROOF – 134 PROOF

Aged in century-old warehouses and crafted from hand-selected barrels, the Colonel E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof is bottled directly from the barrel. Uncut and unfiltered at more than 125 proof, the product reflects the early days of whiskey production when Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. led and owned Buffalo Trace Distillery. An aroma of cooked berries along with rich caramel and floral hints leads to a bold but smooth taste — true to its namesake — and fills the mouth with spice and flavors of vanilla, dried oak, and pepper. The finish is long, lingering, and satisfying with powerful rye character and hints of fruit. $69.99

KING OF KENTUCKY – 125 PROOF

King of Kentucky returns with its annual release of two limited-edition expressions to mark the fifth anniversary of the brand’s revival. Established in 1881, King of Kentucky gained a reputation as a super-premium straight bourbon, and the current offerings pay homage to that tradition with meticulous craftsmanship. Carefully chosen from their single barrel inventory, the super-premium straight bourbon features a barrel-strength, minimally-filtered presentation in this 15-year selection. The aroma carries notes of dark sorghum, resinous oak and honey atop a medley of dried fruit and rich cigar tobacco, and the flavor profile combines robust oak spices, dried fruit and sorghum. $259.99

OLD FITZGERALD BOTTLED IN BOND 17YR – 100 PROOF

As the latest edition of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond series, this 2022 release carries on the brand tradition of extra-aging with its very first 17-year-old bottle. Aged across three floors of Rickhouse V at Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond 17 year embodies the elevated standards instilled in this historic brand since its origins in 1884. The packaging is inspired by the original 1950’s Old Fitzgerald diamond decanter and honors the brand’s authentic, high-quality distilling pedigree. A nose of aged oak punctuated by vanilla, walnuts, baking spices, and dried citrus begets a smooth flavor rich with caramel and butterscotch, enhanced by dark chocolate and abundant spice at the back of the tongue and a bright spearmint note at the mid-palate, before finishing warm and soft with nutmeg and clove. $199.98

OLD FORESTER BIRTHDAY BOURBON – 101 PROOF

The Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2022 represents the 22nd iteration of its limited-edition Birthday Bourbon, created in celebration of founder George Garvin Brown’s birthday. This year marks the 152nd year of the company he established in 1870, the only bourbon brand with an uninterrupted history, sold by the same family company before, during and after Prohibition.  The 11-year-old barrels were chosen specifically for Birthday Bourbon after showing exceptionally unique character during a tasting panel. The aroma begins with caramelized orange peel and cherry fruit, softened with vanilla bean and graham cracker, atop rich layers of toasted and charred oak that are brightened with a touch of cedar. The subtle fruit flavor transitions into sweet roasted coffee with hints of dark chocolate and a dash of cocoa marked by a toasted, seasoned oak character. The finish is smooth and light, with velvety coffee and mocha notes, and a lingering dark chocolate character. $159.99

WELLER C.Y.P.B – 95 PROOF

Buffalo Trace and W.L. Weller surveyed whiskey drinkers online to “Craft Your Perfect Bourbon” (C.Y.P.B.) by choosing their ideal bourbon recipe, proof, warehouse location, and age. The response was overwhelming as over 100,000 bourbon enthusiasts weighed in. The final consensus was a wheated recipe bourbon, aged on the highest warehouse floors for eight years, and bottled at 95 proof. Given the similar preference of William Larue Weller, the brand’s namesake, the result is highly appropriate. A Kentucky-based distiller, Weller became known in 1849 as the first to produce straight bourbon using wheat instead of rye in the mashbill. The limited-edition W.L. Weller C.Y.P.B. has a light aroma with citrus and oak on the nose, a well-rounded and balanced palate, with a medium-long finish and hints of vanilla. $49.99

November 3, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

In 2008  Mefail “Meef” Demnika open an Italian Restaurant at 2667 S Dixie Drive and ran it for 10 years and then sold it in 2017 to Randy Fontana, a U.S. Army veteran and his son. The restaurant struggle during Covid and was shut down by the health department after they failed to renew their food service license in April of 2022.

Meef went on to open the Tuscany’s Grill in Market in April of 2020 at at 881 E. Franklin St. just east of Centerville High School.

Just recently Meef’s son Ali, with the help of his Mom, have taken on the S. Dixie property to open Deminka’s.  They plan on opening Demnika’s Italiano this Thursday November 3rd at 11am, but it will be cash only until they get their register system up and running.  They will be open Monday through Saturday serving up pizza and pasta dishes like lasagna, ravioli, manicotti and stuffed shells, as well as calzones and sandwiches.

They’ve applied for a liquor license, but until they get it, guests are encouraged to bring their own wine or beer.  They’ve partnered with DoorDash for delivery and will eventually add Grub Hub and Uber Eats.

Ali told us the restaurant is family owned and all their staff will be family, with the exception of his girlfriend, who is almost family.  They will take reservations, and on the weekends you can do call ahead seating.

Ali shared it felt a little weird to be back in the space after five years away from it, but he’s looking forward to bringing the space back to life.

Italian Restaurant Coming To Arcade

November 3, 2022 By Dayton937

A fresh new concept featuring an Italian chef is set to open at the historic Dayton Arcade.

Est! Est!! Est!!! will open at 45 W. Fourth Street in the Arcade’s Commercial and Fourth Street Buildings. At the corner of Fourth and Ludlow Streets, this location will be an extension of Mayfair Hospitality’s flagship restaurant in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina that has been in operation since early 2022.

Est! Est!! Est!!! will be led by Chef Simone Conosciani of Rome, Italy. “Being Italian, it has been a life-long dream of mine to bring authentic Italian cuisine to the United States. Living in the United States has given me nothing but further inspiration for all types of cuisine from around the world. The pure expression of culture through food, in my opinion, is magical”, said Chef Conosciani.

Construction on Est! Est!! Est!!!’s 5,520 sf space at the Dayton Arcade is set to begin in the next few weeks, with an anticipated opening date of spring 2023. Est! Est!! Est!!! joins a growing list of food-based businesses to open in the Dayton Arcade, including Gather by Ghostlight, Table 33, and the 6888 Kitchen.
