JumpstART Announces Upcoming Events

August 24, 2010 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

As the 2010-2011 arts season starts to get underway, JumpstART – the YP activity arm of Culture Works – announced some new deals and upcoming events.  This is a group dedicated to providing great arts opportunities to plug local young professionals into the arts scene.  From their email:

Lots of great arts opportunities abound in Dayton – ranked #1 for arts and culture in midsized cities.  But sometimes YPs have a hard time knowing about what’s happening and finding events that fit well into the pocketbook.  That’s where JumpstART comes in – a no-membership/no-commitment way for YPs to get great deals on arts events and stay in the know.  All you have to do is “like” us on Facebook for all the latest updates.

JUMP INTO MODERN MASTERS at the Dayton Art Institute – Thursday, September 16 at 5:30 PM.
RSVPs are requested for this event to get a proper food count – Email Claire at CNerl@cultureworks.org.  For only $10 (payable at the door), each YP gets:

  1. a tour of the special exhibit, Modern Masters (featured in the Columbus Dispatch here and highlighted on Bucher’s Beat here),
  2. two drink tickets,
  3. appetizers from Elegant Fare,
  4. a ticket to the upcoming party – OKTOBERFEST,
  5. and great networking with other YPs from many different groups.

PORGY AND BESS at the Dayton Opera with music by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra

(Note – This is not an official “jump,” but it is considered THE Great American Opera, so we wanted to provide ways to get a great ticket deal and encourage YPs to check it out together.  JumpstART will be attending on Saturday, October 23, but your group can use this discount for any performance.)

Porgy and Bess is celebrating its 75th Anniversary, and Dayton Opera is honoring this George and Ira Gershwin classic with an extraordinary international cast of rising opera stars. Neil Gittleman conducts the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and the production includes Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and chorus members from Central State and Wilberforce Universities.
Here’s the DEAL: Order your Porgy and Bess tickets now before they go for sale to the public and save 15% on groups of 10 or more. Mention the JumpstART group deal for the group discount when you call Ticket Center Stage at 937-228-3630.

COMING UP:

  • Saturday, October 16 – Pre-party with other YPs and enjoy dinner and drinks as we meet DCDC company members and then use a special JumpstART discount to enjoy their Fall show, JazzArtistically.  More info coming soon.
  • November (Date TBA) – Finish holiday shopping at the Dayton Visual Arts Centerwith “Art to Buy” – a selection of accessible and affordable gifts created by local artists.  Buy some prints, beautiful glass ornaments, jewlery and more to take care of those hard-to-buy-for friends and family members.  Join us for some music, food, drink, shopping and then an after-party.
  • Saturday, December 11 – JumpstART joins with the Dayton Ballet Associate Board/Ballet Barre to invite YPs to a Night at the Nutcracker.  Includes a great ticket deal for this holiday classic plus “cocktails with Santa” – it’s a great way to celebrate!

    Want To Help?

August 17, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

The Ronald McDonald House provides a temporary home-away-from-home for families of critically ill, hospitalized children and supports efforts that improve children’s health within our region.

Over the next 4 weeks they are in need of volunteers to help them on a large upcoming project.  Volunteers are needed between 8am – 5pm Monday through Friday.  If you’ve got as little as 2 hours to help, you’ll be put to work on a mailing project or perhaps making phone calls.  Minimum age is 16 and small groups are welcome to volunteer together.

If you are available please contact Brandy McFall at 937-224-0047 x 20 or email her.

The Ronald McDonald House in Dayton, Ohio is able to keep the doors open for families in the Miami Valley Region because of generous donations from individuals, groups, businesses and corporations in our community.

They are an independent, not-for-profit organization. The families that utilize our facilities while their children are hospitalized do so at no cost. There are many ways you can help provide this home-away-from-home for families in their time of need. If you are not available at this time, please keep them in mind for future volunteer projects.

Be a part of the Mu Crew!

August 8, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

This article written by Mu Crew member Matt Grimm.

The Mu Crew is a Mpowerment program with AIDS Resource Center (ARC) Ohio.  This LGBTQ group is designed for young gay men between the ages of 18 and 29, however all are welcome. Founded in 2004, the program’s mission is to create a happy, healthy and united gay community through education and empowerment.

The Mu Crew hosts meetings the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Kuhn’s building in Downtown Dayton; where the group has an official meeting place that they refer to as the Pi House. The meetings consist of crew member discussions around a variety of topics including upcoming events, social events and fundraisers; relative “hot” topics for gay men and anything else the group feels is important.

The group holds annual outings and events such as a weekend-long retreat held every year in May at the Glen Helen nature preserve in Yellow Springs Ohio. They also host an all-day LGBTQ conference at the Pi House each year called the Blue Conference.  The Blue Conference brings in a variety of speakers to share information and hold discussions on a variety of relative subjects for the group.  From performing in Drag shows, organizing an internet based reality show, organizing parties and various other outings, the Mu Crew knows how to have a great time!

The Mu Crew also participates in fundraisers and activities hosted by the LGBT Center of Dayton, as well as local bars such as Masque, Aquarius and MJ’s. The Mu Crew has marched in the Pride parades of Dayton, Cincinnati, and even Columbus.

The Mu Crew’s meetings are held at the Pi House, 15 West 4th Street, Dayton, Ohio 45402. They start at 7:30, but don’t feel pressured to be on time. Many participants come and join in throughout the entire meeting. After the meetings end, the Mu Crew will go out for a bite to eat or head out for some Karaoke!

Coming events include a weekend camping trip at Cedar Point August 13th-15th. The cost is $60.00 and includes admission to Cedar Point on Saturday.

The Mu Crew’s next scheduled meeting is on Tuesday, August 17 at 7:30pm. Make sure to mark your calendars now!

    updayton releases Year Two Report

August 4, 2010 By Megan Cooper 2 Comments

updayton asked young creatives why they are sticking around (Photo by Joel Spitsnaugle and Val Smith)

Cities across the nation (or at least the people who acknowledge the theory of the Creative Class) are battling to attract creative, professional talent.  Local volunteer organization and DaytonMostMetro.com partner updayton has zeroed in on the next generation of these creative professionals and focuses on retaining and attracting those they term the “young creatives.”

On Tuesday, updayton released their Year Two Report to highlight the latest data on the region’s “brain drain,” actions taken by updayton volunteers and others in the community to plug it, and the latest things they’ve heard from young people at the 2010 Young Creatives Summit.

The statistics they present tell two stories.  One is of a brain drain gap that is growing.  The Dayton region has a larger number of students attending college here – we’ve added 22,000 college students from 2005-2008.  However, the number of adults with a college degree in the region has only grown by less than 8,000.   This discrepancy demonstrates that students are still leaving the region after graduation.  However, the data isn’t all gloom and doom.   American Community Survey published that in 2008 the region gained 4,000 individuals aged 18-34.  For the first time in years, the Dayton region has a positive net increase in attracting these young creatives. The gap is closing.

The American Community Survey published that the Dayton region is finally showing a net increase in young people aged 18-34,

Also included in the report, updayton takes a look back at progress made over the past few years.  They update the community on the success of action plans from 2009 (including the Wayne Avenue Corridor and DaytonMostMetro.com), but they also recognize the important work done by numerous organizations throughout the region.  In the 2009 report, updayton listed recommendations to address issues of utmost importance to young creative.  Although they recognize that much of this work was in motion before updayton even existed, they take time in the 2010 report to acknowledge the important projects that are making Dayton more welcoming and accessible to young creatives.  But although the region has advanced significantly in urban vibrancy and connectivity, there are still important steps that must be taken in cultivating greater diversity and better connecting college students to the job market.

Summit attendees discuss important issues (Photo by William Murdock)

The Year Two Report also focuses on the 2010 Young Creatives Summit.  They provide the community with the complaints and concerns of the young professionals who attended the Summit, and they highlight the possible solutions brainstormed by those same YPs.  For each topic: Entrepreneurship, The Dayton Scene, Neighborhoods / Community, and Diversity – updayton presents the common themes that recurred in each breakout session and recommendations for future progress.  Although some of these recommendations require implementation at a higher organizational or government level, there are many steps that businesses, nonprofits, and individuals can take to make a difference.

Finally, updayton utilizes the Report to spotlight the Action Plan projects that volunteers are undertaking to make a difference in the community.  Updayton prides itself on connecting young creatives back into the system to be a part of the solution.

Meet Generation Dayton’s Spotlight Member of the Month

August 2, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

A program of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, Generation Dayton encourages talented young professionals who live and work in the Dayton region to meet, network, learn, grow and establish themselves as integral components in the future success of the region. Each month we’ll introduce you to one of their members with a spotlight interview. So meet our next young professional:

    Name: Aaron Flatter

    Title: Technical Sales Specialist

    Organization: Agil IT
Community Involvement: Generation Dayton employee relations committee  &  HYPE of Miami County.
Hobbies and Interests: Golf, woodworking, flying and nuclear power.
Favorite Area Eatery: The Wine Gallery and Café.
Favorite Weekend Activity: Spending time with my wife, golfing and enjoying almost anything that includes the outdoors.
What do you love about Dayton?
Dayton is home for me. Well, technically I live in the middle of corn and bean fields, but its close enough. I’ve been around Dayton my entire life and just when I think there’s something missing, well, that’s when my wife usually clues me in. Dayton may be a rather small city but it’s not lacking charm, culture or diversity. There are so many wonderful organizations and local business that help make Dayton the city that it is. Of course I can’t keep my mind from wandering to all the other good things Dayton offers such as Boston Stokers coffee, the seemingly never ending beer menu at Chappys, and too many local places to even mention when it comes to delicious food. I love Dayton not just because it’s home to me and most of my family but because its home to so many other wonderful people as well. I can’t quite imagine my life without Dayton, or without Pub Fries from the Dublin Pub.
How has Generation Dayton aided your professional, personal and/or social development?
Generation Dayton has given me the opportunities to interact with fellow young professionals that share similar morals, goals and interest.
Tell us a little more about your profession and company…
Agil IT designs, builds, maintains and secures information and infrastructures for ambulatory care healthcare practices. Our mission is to help these organizations leverage their investments in technology to establish themselves as leaders in their industry. Agil IT sees and understands the evolution of healthcare, especially as the federal government is pushing hard for Electronic Health Records (EHR) adoption and with potential cuts to reimbursements coming down the pike for medical practices, operational efficiency is paramount. We help those practices with those efficiencies, which in turn help them to provide the best patient care…all through technology and consulting.
What do you enjoy about your career/profession? Employer?
The challenges that arrive with every new technology breakthrough and having the opportunity to do this in a passionate and energetic work environment.
    Favorite quote or inspiratonal saying:
“You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” John Wooden

“The price for success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and determination that whether we win or lose, we applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” Vince Lombardi

    Want to GoGo to GaGa?

July 30, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

AIDS Resource Center Ohio is raffling off 3 tickets to “The Monster Ball” Tour at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It’s the hottest summer tour out there and you can purchase a raffle ticket online for just $10 or up your odds of winning by getting 3 tickets for $25.

“It’s still called Monster Ball, but it’s more of a musical and less of a concert,” Lady Gaga said in a recent interview with KIIS-FM’s Ryan Seacrest. “It has a New York theme, it’s a story, and the story is that me and my friends are in New York and we’re going to the Monster Ball, and we get lost.”

Critics around the world raved about the first leg of The Monster Ball Tour, which Gaga described as “the first-ever pop-electro opera.” The Sun called it “breathtaking stuff” and “the best live show you will see this year,” while London’s Independent wrote: “Gaga’s got it, which is why, right now, the whole pop world wants to take a ride on her disco stick.”  Writing about her show at Radio City Music Hall, the New York Times noted that “her Monster Ball tour always provided something worth a snapshot: a sci-fi tableau, perhaps, or a skimpy, glittery costume. The more her image gets around, the better Lady Gaga does.”

The drawing will be held on Sat, Aug 28th  during the  Northwest Ohio AIDS Walk.  The winner must be 18 or older but need not be present to win. If winner is not present, they will be notified by phone and/or email. Positive ID must be presented in order to claim your prize.

Covering 36 counties and with four offices in the region, ARC Ohio is geographically the largest AIDS Services organization in Ohio today.  In the midst of growing complacency, difficult financial times, and still no cure or preventative vaccine, your help has never been more crucial!

AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio) is a nonprofit, community-based organization whose mission is to provide services to those infected, affected and at risk of HIV/AIDS.  They provide comprehensive support services, HIV testing & counseling, prevention education, linkage to care, and advocacy.

Help the Humane Society of Greater Dayton win $20,000

July 13, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is a top five finalist in the Jump START Your Nonprofit contest from Modern Office Methods. The winning organization will receive new office equipment valued at $20,000. The second prize is valued at $10,000 and the third prize at $5,000.

This is a great opportunity for us, as you know firsthand the time it takes to raise this amount of money. This makeover would allow us to be more efficient in providing services for those who need it most. And, typically, money raised tends to support our mission, rather than offset business technology costs.

We need your vote! The more votes, the better chance we have to win. Go to www.momnet.com and vote for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton once a day beginning Monday, July 12 at 8am through Sunday, July 25 at midnight. We need this makeover to help us run better and serve our communities better!

Please share this with any friends or colleagues who you feel would be willing to vote for us.

Happy voting and thank you for your support!

There will also be a Corn Hole set or two so anyone who wants to play Corn Hole can do so. Since this is a family event there will be a Fourth of July themed piñata for the kids to play with.

    Volunteers!

June 21, 2010 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

    JLD Power in Action

Volunteerism is a major aspect of most YP orgs in the region.  Maybe it’s the great feeling people get from making a difference or the perfect platform it provides for networking and socializing – either way, volunteering seems to be a on the calendars for many YP groups.  There are two YP orgs in our region that focus less on social or professional events and spend their time making a difference through volunteerism.  I talked to Jessica Saunders from the Junior League of Dayton and Lisa Henderson from the Red Cross Associate Board to learn a little more about how their groups approach volunteerism and how they’re making a difference in the region.

Saunders and Henderson have quite a bit in common – both come from other Midwestern towns and have made Dayton their home through community involvement and careers at Dayton Children’s Hospital.  Both women discovered their organizations through friends and colleagues in other local organizations.  Saunders learned about the JLD through Dayton History and her work at Children’s, while Henderson decided to get involved with the RCAB due to friends at Generation Dayton extending an invitation to a recruiting event.

But now that they’re hooked in the region and with their organizations, I had some questions for Henderson and Saunders to learn a little more about the RCAB and JLD.  You can get a lot of great information about mission, membership requirements, and upcoming events from the Web sites, but I wanted the personal stories within the organizations and the values they provide the community and their members.

I can read a Web site, but I wanted to know the short answer about the mission of these orgs and the crux of what they do.  Saunders has the elevator pitch down to a science, according to her, Junior League Dayton is “an organization that builds women to be community leaders and community volunteers.”  Henderson explains that the Red Cross Associate Board “supports the Red Cross through planning a fundraiser, The Great Escape.”  She’s quick to add,  “The funds we raise at The Great Escape stay in the Dayton region.”

And these organizations both offer unique and varied opportunities in the pursuit of their missions.  Henderson is excited about the hands-on way to make a difference through the planning of their yearly event.  She says, “The fact that (the associate board) hosts one of the Red Cross’ largest fundraisers means our board members are truly making a difference and are certainly hands on.  Each member has the opportunity to pick a committee or area that most interests them (securing sponsors, helping with marketing, etc)… It’s also a great way to develop skills – for example, I learned so much about event planning by getting involved with the logistics committee. We are able to see an event and fundraising from start to finish, which is always such a great feeling!”  Although the work the members are doing is geared toward this major one-time event, the experiences stick with the members.  Henderson explains that through the work of planning this major event, board members have the opportunity to learn more about the great work the Red Cross is doing nationally and in the region, and the board can help them connect more if they’re interested in volunteering in other ways.

Saunders is excited to talk about what makes the Junior League unique – the focus on developing women’s leadership opportunities.  For anyone who doesn’t know, the Junior League is a woman-only organizations (sorry, guys).  She believes, an “organization of all women is great because it gives you an opportunity to learn from women who are at every age and stage of their lives. There are also many leadership opportunities and training opportunities within the league – if you want to learn about fundraising there is a place for that.  If you are interested in marketing – you can learn about that.  And of course – there are many opportunities to volunteer throughout the community.”  Althought the Junior League is an organization for developing the leadership skills and community involvement for younger women (20s and 30s), they keep strong relationships with their “sustainers” who have graduated from the program and provide valuable insights and connections.

Both organizations provide great ways to get involved, meet people, and make a difference.  But – in case the descriptions aren’t enough to spark full interest – I wanted to know more.  There are plenty of volunteer opportunities out there – you can open the paper any day and find ways to give back to the community.  I asked these women what makes a volunteer organization so much worthwhile than periodic stints at individual volunteering.  Both had great insights.

    JLD Holiday at Home

Saunders is excited about the total impact the League offers.  She says, “It’s really great to see what a group of people can do to improve the community. Doing something together not only results in something positive for the community but builds some bonds that last through your entire life.  The Junior League ‘sustainers’ continue to build on friendships they started in the league decades ago!    It is important for young people to join the JLD because it’s a wonderful organization that is so tied to our Dayton history.  If you are new to the community – it’s not only a great way to network but a great way to learn about the city!”  And when I challenged her that some people just aren’t “joiners,” Saunders had an answer for that, too.  She understands that feeling, but believes that “there is a time and place for joining organizations.”  Although she can’t make that decision for others, she is pleased with her choice to get involved with JLD.  She says, “I am forever grateful for the relationships – both professionally and personally – that I have from the organizations or groups that I have joined.”

If you’re anti-organization, Henderson mentions that there are plenty of nonprofits out there with great causes that provide you with the opportunity to give back -and you don’t have to “join” anything.  She points out, “You can really match your interests and time to what’s out there. Don’t limit yourself!”  But being a part of a larger organization does offer perks.  Henderson believes, “It’s great to be a part of something on an ongoing basis because you can see the long-term impact of what you do. The associate board is able to raise money, and then can see what a difference those funds have made for the community!”

Although the focus of the Red Cross Associate Board is on providing needed support to the local chapter of the Red Cross, there are great opportunities for professional development as well.  Henderson raves about the amazing people she has met through the organization both at the Red Cross and on the associate board.  Beyond networking, she says, “I have been able to participate in all areas of planning for The Great Escape and have developed skills that help me be a better leader professionally and in my other organizations.”  In addition to gaining valuable skills like leadership, communication, and project management, Henderson is also really pleased with how she’s been able to expand her social network.  She’s happy to share stories about great friends she’s met through her involvement with the associate board.  Henderson sums up her experience by stating that, “YP volunteer organizations are more than just about the volunteerism.  (By not being involved), you’ll miss out on a chance to meet new people and give back to the community!”

Saunders also has great experiences beyond the valuable community-based work she does with League.  She says, “I love the opportunity to work with some really great women on issues that affect our community.”  And although the JLD focuses on volunteerism, it has been very valuable to her in other realms.  Saunders says, “Professionally – it’s a wonderful way to network.  Socially – it’s my escape from my professional life!  There are many opportunities throughout the year to hone both of these skills.”

By speaking to these two charismatic and engaged women, I learned a lot more about the Junior League of Dayton and the Dayton chapter of the Red Cross Associate Board.  But before wrapping up, I wanted to know more about their impression of the Dayton region as a whole, what it’s like to be a YP in the city, and why some people perceive a sense of apathy from local YPs.  Saunders cited a unique “problem;”  She says, “I think there is too much to do!”  Her solution for YPs who don’t feel involved is to do some homework, explore the various opportunities out there to find the one that “clicks,” and get hooked up with one of the many nonprofits (or volunteer organizations) out there that are always looking for volunteers.

For some final advice, Henderson says, “I think there has to be personal initiative to get engaged, but there is no lack of opportunity here in Dayton. (Nonprofits) want our input, expertise, fresh ideas and energy. Get involved in one group and word tends to spread – soon you’ll have so many opportunities it will be hard to select which ones you want to do!”

Thanks to these ladies for taking the time to share their stories with me.  Learn more about these great organizations at their recruitment events this summer.  The Dayton Area Red Cross Associate Board and the Junior League of Dayton are both hosting recruitment events THIS THURSDAY so you can learn more.

June 14, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

It’s a 4th of July Holiday tradition in the Miami Valley, a 3 day world music festival and it needDeb Norris, John North and Arundi Venkayya Cox play and work at Cityfolk!s our help.  With less than 3 weeks to go there are literally hundreds of volunteer positions that haven’t been filled for this years Cityfolk Festival, July 2- 4 at RiverScape.  Having volunteered for the last few years, I can tell you it’s a great way to see the festival.  Last year I worked with some great friends serving up brewski’s just outside the main stage.  Our crew was dancing, laughing and having a great time.  The three hour shift just flew by. That’s Deb Norris, John North and Arundi Venkayya Cox pictured on the right there midway through our shift!  Looks like fun, huh?

Operations, logistics, the merchandise stand, artist hospitality and pop and  water sales also need volunteers.  So grab your friends, sign up online (you’ll get a groovy free t-shirt for your time).  The folks that work at Cityfolk bust their tails all year round to pull off this amazing array of international music, dancing, crafts and more that is perfect family entertainment. Aside from sponsorships, the beer and beverage sales from this weekend fund the year round operations for Cityfolk.

If you’ve ever been to the festival and enjoyed-I implore you to give just 3 hours of your time to make this the best fest ever!  I’ll be on Beer Crews Friday and Saturday, come join the fun!
