June 30, 2025 By Dayton937

Master Baker Bill Evans

In a one-hour class on Sunday, July 27th at 10am  Evans will  introduce you to a technique called lamination that will enable you to produce not only flaky biscuits, but also other laminated products-Danish, croissants, puff pastry, even pie crust.

Q+ Card Supports Area LGBTQ+ Youth Center

June 3, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Q+ Youth Center in Dayton is run by a group of volunteers dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive space for Queer Youth to thrive.

Formed in response to the continued rise of youth suicides, specifically amongst queer and trans individuals, the Q+ Youth Center board seeks to create more than a building. The members of the board and volunteers from the community are working towards impactful and lasting change in Ohio that leads to the success and brilliance of our youth.

The Q+ Youth Center Project understands the importance of providing a safe space for 7th-12th grade students who identify as LGBTQIA+. Their mission is to empower, support, and mentor these young individuals by creating an environment where they can freely express themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination.

“I hope no youth has to feel alone like I did while coming into my own being. If we can make a safe space for their growth, it will only make the future brighter. That’s worth supporting.” Michael Green, Digital Marketing Manager, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company

The center’s goal is to fund youth events, mentor programs, and ultimately a brick and mortar facility with a focus on the young minds in the greater Gem city region.

You can help support them by purchasing their merchant  card good at 16 local restaurant/stores. You’ll enjoy discounts to all of your favorite Q+ supporting businesses!  Q+ Discount Card for 2025-2026!! For a $25 donation, you will get discounts ALL YEAR LONG. Local Residents Hold “People’s Town Hall” in Dayton, Highlighting Urgent Community Concerns

May 16, 2025 By Dayton937

With the absence of their elected representative, concerned citizens of Ohio’s 10th Congressional District gathered on Thursday evening for a grassroots “People’s Town Hall” at Sinclair Community College in Dayton. Organized to address pressing local and national issues, the event offered a platform for residents to voice their concerns directly, despite Congressman Mike Turner’s decision not to attend.

An empty chair on stage symbolized the Congressman’s absence, underscoring what many attendees described as a lack of accessibility and accountability to constituents.

Speakers at the event covered a wide range of issues currently affecting District 10 residents, including the impact of recent state and federal policy changes on immigration, Social Security, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, and layoffs of government workers.

“This town hall is about people standing up for each other, especially when our leaders won’t show up to hear us,” said one local attendee. “These are life-or-death issues for many in our community. We deserve to be heard.”

The town hall drew attendees from across the district, including retirees, veterans, public workers, and families concerned about the direction of policy decisions that directly affect their lives. Several speakers called for more transparent and responsive representation in Congress, and urged community members to stay engaged and active.

While Congressman Turner declined the invitation to attend, organizers say the event marks only the beginning of ongoing efforts to bring constituent voices to the forefront.

The People’s Town Hall was coordinated by a coalition of grassroots advocates committed to elevating civic engagement and local accountability, including Melissa Rodriquez, Leslie Merry, Kim Senft-Paras, Rose Lounsbury, and Laurel Kerr.

Attendees were encouraged to follow up with action items, including checking their voter registration status, signing the local petition against Ohio House Bill SB1, and contacting their representatives about their concerns.

DAI Art Ball Tickets Now On Sale

April 6, 2024 By Dayton937

The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) has announced details for its 2024 Art Ball fundraiser, taking place Saturday, June 8. Presented by The SharpGroup – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Professional Realty & UnlistedHomes.com, the black-tie gala, a Dayton tradition since 1957, returns to celebrate its 67th anniversary.

“We are excited to welcome guests to the 67th anniversary of Art Ball,” said DAI Director & President Michael R. Roediger. “As one of the museum’s largest annual fundraisers, this Dayton classic is vital to supporting the DAI’s operating budget.

This year’s Art Ball continues the long-standing tradition of being inspired by an artwork from the DAI’s permanent collection. Art Ball Chairs Julie Forman and Marty Gehres have selected It’s Raining Colored Dots, a silkscreen on paper, as the artistic feature for this year’s event. Created by Oakwood High School graduate Petah Coyne around 1977, the brightly colored work is a recent gift to the collection from longtime friend of the DAI, Linda Lombard.

“Our goal was to choose a work that captured the vibrancy and spirit of the Disco Era,” says DAI Associate Board members Julie Forman and Marty Gehres. “Our guests will see the artwork’s influence throughout the event, from beautiful décor and exquisite food to the music and atmosphere. We can’t wait to follow the call of the disco ball at Dayton’s best black-tie event of the year.”

Art Ball begins at 7 pm with cocktails, specialty martinis and hors d’oeuvres, followed by an elegant, seated dinner in the museum’s Harry A. Shaw Gothic Cloister and the Great Hall. Following dinner, guests may enjoy live music by Tommi Lea’s Groovy Get Down, a Silent Disco experience, open bars, select bourbons and much more. For an additional ticket price, guests may attend a VIP cocktail hour with high-end wines and hors d’oeuvres, which will offer early entry to Art Ball for a private reception at 6:00 p.m.

Art Ball traces its roots back to Dayton’s Holiday Ball, which began in 1957. Organized by the Junior League of Dayton, the event was held at the DAI, with proceeds benefitting the museum. The event moved to the spring in 1963 and was rechristened as “Art Ball.” In 1965, the DAI’s newly formed Associate Board took over planning and organizing the gala. More information about Art Ball, its history and this year’s featured artwork can be found online at www.daytonartinstitute.org/artball.

Reservations are required for Art Ball, and attendance is limited. Tickets may be purchased online beginning April 6 for non-members. They were for sale April 3rd for members.  For more information about reservations and to request an invitation, contact External Affairs Director Mike Griest at [email protected].

Art Ball also includes the Grand Draw Raffle in its fundraising efforts. Only 600 tickets will be sold for $100 each, with the chance to win prize packages valued at $2500 -$25,000, including a week’s stay for up to 14 people in the Turks and Caicos Islands and beautiful jewelry provided by James Free Jewelers. Ticket holders need not be present at Art Ball to win. Those purchasing three or more raffle tickets receive one free Oktoberfest Preview Party ticket (valued at $95). Grand Draw Raffle tickets may be purchased online beginning March 22. For more information about the Grand Draw Raffle and to purchase tickets online, go towww.artballraffle.com.

Let the Music PLAY! TheatreLab’s Popular Trivia Returns 4/2/24!!

March 25, 2024 By Y. K. Cuts

You know music? You know singers? You Know Broadway? You know lyrics? Well, if so, you know you’;re going to win Trivia Night at TheatreLab!

The popular event returns on Tuesday 4/2/24 starting at 6:00pm. It will be the usual set-up….beverages, snacks and all you need to play trivia.  What makes this trivia unique is it’s FREE and the theater company merely asks for donations as support. The last trivia event ‘Merry Quizmas‘ was packed to the gills and this one looks no different. The rules are much the same as trivia in the area….no more than 6 to a team, the quizziteer has final say, there will be some sing-along moments, and other mayhem. The trivia night has 3 rounds and will again provide winners with outstanding prizes. (Not sure what they have this time around, but last time there were gift certificates for spa services at Square One Salon, a basket of bottles, complimentary tickets to the next TheatreLab Production and other goodies!)

The idea behind using the space for trivia grows from the fact that theater companies around the country are looking at tougher financial times. Still reeling from COVID and the changes that came from folks choosing to ‘stay in’ vs. supporting local theater, can be felt everywhere. TheatreLab decided to make their space one of fun, where folks can laugh, relax and find ways to connect with audiences in various ways. So far, the approach has been successful!

The trivia night takes place at:

TheatreLab Dayton Studio. 116 North Jefferson Street. Dayton, Ohio 45402. The event is hosted by the ‘Queen‘ of trivia, Josh Stucky. Suggested donation $10, reserve your seat here.

TheatreLab‘s Mission is to be a place where artists come together to cultivate ideas into works of art. Focusing on music-based live theater, The Lab takes an ensemble approach to its process, letting each artist have a voice while the piece grows organically. The Lab prides itself on visually stunning works that examine the experiment of life in a way our audiences have not seen before.

Shop THE MARKET at Town & Country To Benefit KNO

January 12, 2024 By Dayton937

The Kettering Noon Optimists have been hosting THE MARKET at Town & Country on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 11am-4pm since 2017.

When the mall did their remodel they committed to use the breezeway space to support community and civic activities.  Pam Cochran was the Property Manager at the time and was also a Kettering Noon Optimist member.  Unfortunately Pam is no longer with us but her spirit to support the community and children of the area is still alive.

The Market features local small businesses such as Susan with Got Cakes, Christine with Red Lotus Essence and Kelly with Au Faux Me.  There are also crafters such as Anthea with Chalk Couture decor and Sharell with Purple Mane.  Direct sales vendors include Jennifer with Paper Pie, Carol with Tastefully Simple, Chery with Color Street Nails, Carrie with Thirty One, Janell with Origami Owl, Tammy with Mary Kay, Robyn with Norwex and Laura with Mary and Martha.

Every month We Care Arts is a vendor at no cost to them.  Some months we have additional charities such as the Kettering Backpack Program, Goodworks Farm and Diaper Depot.  According to Barbara Farris, the Immediate Past President of the club, “The Market is one of biggest fundraisers for the Optimist Club and we are grateful that Town & Country does not charge us to use their location.  This allows us to keep vendor fees on the same level that churches and schools use.”

Farris shared that some of the activities of KNO uses the funds raised through The Market are  scholarships, an essay and Oratorical  contest, providing shoes for all Kindergarten students at Beavertown Elementary, sweat pants/shirts, socks and underwear to all the nurses in Kettering Elementary schools, supporting Crayons to Classroom and Kettering Back Pack.

Rum Tasting Event to Celebrate The Castle’s 30th Anniversary!

October 6, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Rum Raid for The Castle is a rum tasting being held this coming Wed, Oct 11th at The Steam Plant as a fundraiser for  The Castle,  a vital part of the mental health delivery system in Montgomery County. They provide a place for peer support, a place to have fun while learning responsibility, accountability and gaining some empowerment over the leisure time.

Ticket holders will have the choice to taste the rum straight up or mixed in a cocktail.Rum Raid for The Castle is a rum tasting being held this coming Wed, Oct 11th at The Steam Plant!

Some rums are made for mixing into cocktails, others are good enough to sip straight. This event will help you learn the nuances of  types of rum on the market. Age, distillation method, and even place of origin all work in tandem to create different varieties of the spirit, each with a distinct use, profile, and history.

Here’s an idea of what you’ll be able to taste at the event:

Spiced Rum– Broadly speaking, this popular variation is defined as any rum that’s infused with myriad herbs and spices. According to the Rum Lab, spiced rum came about as a way to make rum more palatable, since “fresh” rum packed a good amount of potency back in the day.

Gold Rum – Vanilla, coconut, citrus, and caramel are some of the tasting notes that you might find in a gold or amber rum, which hit the sweet spot between light and dark rums in terms of both aging time and taste. These medium-bodied rums get their color from added caramel or being aged in pale oak barrels and lean a touch sweeter to taste, with a subtle buttery richness that makes for a pleasant on-the-rocks sipping experience.

White Rum – If you like piña coladas, you probably like light rum (and maybe, getting caught in the rain). The most common type of rum, white rum is light in body, sweet in flavor, and has a pleasantly mild character. While it’s still made from sugarcane juice or molasses white rum is typically only aged for about a year.

Dark Rum – A well-aged dark rum boasts hints of brown sugar, toffee, and sometimes vanilla and honey, which lend well to enjoying the spirit straight to let each layer of flavor shine. You’ll find them in stalwarts like a Dark ‘N’ Stormy, Hurricane, or Painkiller.

Black Rum – First popularized in the post-Prohibition era as a cocktail mixer (the idea was to make it the base of a punch), black rum was meant to mimic the look of a deeply aged rum at a lower price point, according to Martin Cate, author of “Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum and the Cult of Tiki.” The spirit is aged for three years in white oak and crafted with fermented molasses, so it offers much more body and interest.

Aged Rum – Aged rums get their warm, toasty hue from sitting in barrels for extended periods of time. Despite the labor in making this style of rum, it’s grown quite popular in recent years, taking its cues from the careful, regionally tied distillation methods of Scotch and whiskey, resulting in a nuanced, quaffable spirit. Of course, these rums are relatively rare by nature since they take so long to come to fruition.

Flavored Rum – Quite simply, any rum with flavoring agents added that aren’t natural spices or the infusions you might find in spiced rums. These rums begin with a neutral, sweet base of rum before the flavorings and colorings are added. This is a pretty broad category with options ranging from simple tropical infusions (think pineapple and coconut) to more involved flavor profiles like coffee, chocolate, and cherry vanilla

English Style Rum – Modern-day British rums are characterized by the distilling method (now made using a mix of pot and column distilling) as well as a wild yeast-fermented molasses base rather than cane juice. These sweet, rich expressions are great on the rocks

French Style Rum (Rhum) –  Rhums, which hail from the French Caribbean, are all produced in column stills using sugar cane juice fermented for up to five days. The resulting flavor is softly sweet, with fresh grassy undertones and elegant hints of floral notes.

Tickets are available online here for the event which runs from 6-9pm, Wed, Oct 11th.
VIP tickets are $75, and guests will be welcomed at 6pm with an exclusive cheese and rum pairing hosted by St Anne’s Cheese Company and are almost sold out.
General Admission tickets are $50 and guest can join us at 6:45pm for rum tastings and light hors d’oeuvres. $20 for designated drivers. Tickets go up to $60 at the door.

Be sure and bring $ for a chance to dig for a prize in the treasure chest. It will be stuffed with items from Ignite Yoga, TITLE Boxing Club Kettering, Mamma Disalvo’s, McAlister’s Deli, Geez Grill & Pub, 937 Party Bus, Malibu Rum, Meadowlark Restaurant, Agave & Rye Centerville, Manna Uptown, J Alexander’s, Mike’s Carwash, Sweet Treats Festival, Flying Ace Express Car Wash, Black Rock Bar & Grill and more!
