Humane Society of Greater Dayton Raffling Off 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

November 20, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

You could win a car! Yes, a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek to be exact! Plus, you can support the Humane Society of Greater Dayton as they continue to work to save thousands of animals each year.

For the fifth year in a row, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is partnering with Subaru of Dayton to bring a new car into one lucky person’s life through the Snag a Subaru Raffle.

Purchase your Snag a Subaru raffle tickets today and you will have a 1 in 3,000 chance to win a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek! That’s better odds than with any lottery around! Snag a Subaru raffle tickets are just $25 each. You must be 18 years old to purchase tickets. This year’s winning car has a white exterior and black interior.

All money raised from the sale of these raffle tickets goes to help the animals at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, a no-kill shelter and the oldest animal welfare agency in the Miami Valley.

“Subaru of Dayton has been a wonderful partner for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton through the years,” said Brian Weltge, President and CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. “We are honored to partner with them in many ways throughout the year from fundraisers such as Snag a Subaru to adoption events and so much more.”

Where to Buy Tickets

  • Tickets can be purchased online at www.hsdayton.org/Subaru
  • In person by visiting the Humane Society of Greater Dayton’s main shelter at 1661 Nicholas Road in Dayton
  • Over the phone by calling (937) 262-5921

You do not need your ticket stubs to be entered into the drawing. The physical ticket will be filled out for all tickets purchased online or over the phone prior to the drawing. Your ticket stubs will not be mailed to you, but can be picked up at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Upon request, your ticket numbers can be emailed to you following your purchase.

And the Winner Is…

To keep everyone safe and socially distant, this year’s Snag a Subaru drawing will be done virtually. Tune into the Humane Society of Greater Dayton’s Facebook page on Saturday, December 19th at 2 p.m. as we stream the drawing live from Subaru of Dayton. One lucky person will have their ticket drawn and win a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek!

Humane Society of Greater Dayton to Expand

January 21, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is excited to announce they have fully raised the funds required to expand their current facility to better serve the needs of the animals and people in our community.

“In 2014, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton began an in-depth strategic plan where we worked with staff, board, volunteers, community leaders and residents to see what we can do to better serve the needs of our community,” said Brian Weltge, President & CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. “Through this process, we pinpointed several key needs to be addressed. With this expansion we are taking steps to impact the animals and we are excited to continue to grow and expand to better serve our community. In the past few years, we began quietly fundraising to make this big vision to transform animal welfare a reality. We are proud to say that we are fully funded with the first phase of this campaign.”

Through this expansion, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton has fully raised more than $5 million to grow their current facility at 1661 Nicholas Road. This expansion will include:

  • Regional Full-Service, Needs-Based Animal Hospital to help all pet owners in our community regardless of their income level. Through this Full-Service, Needs-Based Animal Hospital, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton can offer solutions for those in need while continuing to provide top-notch medical care to the animals in our community. This animal hospital will be open to not only Montgomery County residents, but surrounding counties as well.
  • Regional High-Volume Spay/Neuter Clinic that will positively impact the cat overpopulation concerns facing neighborhoods. With an estimated 50,000 stray or community cats within just Montgomery County, programs such as Trap-Neuter-Return are critical to humanely and effectively battle cat overpopulation. Through the High-Volume Spay/Neuter Clinic, we will have the resources available to scale up our already established Community Cat Initiative program, which is currently performing 4,000+ spay/neuter surgeries annually. With this new clinic, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton looks to increase surgeries over the next ten years by 400 percent.
  • Cruelty & Neglect Animal Rehabilitation Center to house, protect and rehabilitate all types of animals. Each year, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton investigates hundreds of cases of cruelty or neglect toward animals. We are the only organization in the Montgomery County that investigates cases against all types of animals. With such a large range of animals needing our assistance, the Animal Rehabilitation Center will provide us with the resources needed to house large-breed animals such as horses as well as give us the housing to help in large-scale cases. Right now, we rely solely on fosters to care for many of the animals that are part of cruelty and neglect investigations.

“As a leader in animal welfare that has been serving our community since 1902, it was very important for us to be responsible in planning this expansion,” said Weltge. “Although we are excited for this growth, we wanted to ensure that we were 100 percent fully funded before we moved forward with construction on this expansion. As good stewards to all donations we receive, we could not justify moving forward without having 100 percent of the funding in place.”

For the $5+ million raised for this first phase of their expansion, 99 percent of the gifts were secured from philanthropic individuals and private foundations including contributions by The Jesse & Caryl Philips Foundation, a $1 million gift from the Joanie Bernard Foundation, Harold & Mary Rieck, Charles D. Berry Foundation and the Berry Family Foundation. More than 80 percent of the money raised was cash donations and short-term pledges.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton plans to break ground this Spring on this phase of their expansion.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton continues to lead the way in creating a community where every animal is valued and free from suffering. We have already made great strides in this, but we still have more to do! In 2019, the Greater Dayton community was able to officially call itself a no-kill community. This is a huge step in the right direction and we could not have accomplished this alone. We are excited to see other rescues as well as our county animal control facility evolve to help improve the lives of companion pets in our community.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton has a big vision for the future of all animal welfare in the Miami Valley. Thanks to a small group of generous supporters, fundraising for expanding the services offered at our Nicholas Road location is complete. The next phase in our Master Plan to help more animals in need is the creation of a new adoption and community center at our site on Austin Boulevard. This new facility near Austin Landing will allow us to continue to move forward and impact the community to better meet the needs of all animals, while saving more lives! For more information on how you can be part of our expansion on Austin Boulevard near Austin Landing, contact Courtney Steckel at (937) 262-5923 or e-mail csteckel@hsdayton.org.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and receives no government funding and is not affiliated with any other regional, state or national organization including the Humane Society of the United States. The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is proud to be a no-kill facility and the area’s oldest agency – serving the people and pets in our community for the past 118 years. For more information on our programs and services, visit www.hsdayton.org.

Jane’s Best Bets (1/26 – 1/30)

January 25, 2011 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

It’s that time of year when many of us have already failed on our New Year’s resolutions.  If you fall into this category, then perhaps you’ve already been sampling some different foods as part of Restaurant Week, one of the many events going on in the Miami Valley!

On Wednesday, if you can’t find something you’d like to eat as part of the 2011 Winter Restaurant Week (which would mean you are too picky!), there are also other food specials, such as Oyster Bar Happy Hour at Dorothy Lane Market, Bang Bang Shrimp Wednesday at Bonefish Grill, and All You Can Eat-Ribs, Chicken or Pork at Bullwinkle’s.  If you would rather consume your calories through drinking, participate in the Wine Tasting at Bruning’s Wine Cellar, the Weekly Wine Tasting at The Wine Gallery, or Wine Down Weekdays at Savona Restaurant & Wine Bar.  Or check out Green Drinks Dayton at Norton’s, where the environmental manager for the City of Dayton will be speaking.  If you’re feeling overloaded with all that paperwork on the job (I know I do a lot of the time!), attend/view the online webinar, Take charge of your paperwork in 2011!  And for all you adventure movie lovers, be sure to check out the movie Ride the Divide at The Neon.

On Thursday, make a trip to PNC 2nd Street Market for their Soup Sampling and Recipes.  Attend Lunch and Learn: Incredible Edibles at Cox Arboretum to find out techniques for building a vegetable garden.  After all, spring is right around the corner.  Sorry, that was a lie, but let us at least think that!  If your New Year’s resolution involves improving your finances, attend the Dayton Metro Library’s Financial Literacy Class.  And in case you were wondering if that event would fit into your budget, you’ll be glad to know that it is free!  Enjoy happy hour and do some Networking with Dayton’s Marketing Professionals at Fox and Hound.  Hear poets and vocalists perform as part of Chris Wiley: Poetry in Motion at De’Lish.  I’m not sure if they’re talking about tape or liquor, but if you like scotch, then attend the Scotch Tasting/Class at Boston’s Bistro.  And for a couple theater options…at Wright State, you can see Jekyll & Hyde or you can go to The Loft Theatre for  Twelfth Night, which is actually taking place on the 27th night of the month.

On Friday, join fellow young professionals for the Gen D 4th Friday Lunch Speaker Series, in which former Governor Taft will be talking about Education and Innovation. In the evening, go out to dinner with friends or that special someone as part of 2011 Winter Restaurant Week.  If you’re on a budget but still want to try some good food, many restaurants are offering two dinners for the price of one!  After dinner, catch one of the many shows going on in town, including The Berenstain Bears Onstage: A Bear Country Musical (which was one of my favorite book series growing up!) at Town Hall Theatre, the Dayton Opera’s Fidelio at the Schuster Center, I Hate Hamlet at Playhouse South, Jekyll & Hyde at Wright State, Twelfth Night at The Loft Theatre, or The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee at Dayton Playhouse.  I’ve always heard that Bridge is for old people, so if you’re old, check out The Octette Bridge Club at Beavercreek Community Theatre.  If you’re young though, don’t worry…I don’t think they card!  Over at Alex’s on 725, get your dancing shoes ready as the band Off the Hook will be performing.  If you love Dayton music, make your way to Canal Street Tavern for Dayton Does Dayton!  And if you’re a Rascal Flatts fan like me, be sure to get tickets to see them perform at the Nutter Center as part of their “Nothing Like This” Tour!

On Saturday, if you don’t mind being super cold, help support the Special Olympics by participating in Freezin’ For A Reason- 2011 Polar Plunge at Caesar’s Creek.  Again for some theater/musical performances, check out The Berenstain Bears Onstage at Town Hall Theatre, Jekyll & Hyde at Wright State, The Octette Bridge Club at the Beavercreek Community Theatre, I Hate Hamlet at The Playhouse South, Jekyll & Hyde at Wright State University, The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee at Dayton Playhouse, or Twelfth Night at The Loft Theatre.  If you want to drink wine but want to help counteract the killing of your brain cells, head to the Boonshoft Museum for the Science of Wine.  Over at the Dayton Masonic Center, join the wonderful jumpstART with their Jump into Bluegrass for discounted tickets to see bluegrass superstar Ricky Skaggs!  Or if you want to be a cowboy baby, “moooo”ve over to the Nutter Center to see Kid Rock.  If you have some “spare” time and would like to “strike” up a conversation with some other young professionals, come to Woodman Lanes for Generation Dayton Goes Bowling!  After you “split”, head to the St. Helen’s Fish Fry or to the Christopher Club for the Knights of Columbus 4022 Fish Fry.

On Sunday, take it easy with Gentle Yoga at the Sri Yoga Center.  If you still don’t know how to skate (don’t worry, I’m in that bunch too!), attend Fundamentals of Skating at RiverScape.  Again, there will be a multitude of shows to see, including Jekyll & Hyde at Wright State University, The Berenstain Bears Onstage at Town Hall Theatre, The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee at Dayton Playhouse, Twelfth Night at The Loft Theatre, the Dayton Opera’s Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Schuster Center, and The Octette Bridge Club at Beavercreek Community Theatre.  And finally, for a “purr-fectly” good time, help support the Humane Society of Greater Dayton by coming to the Cat Walk 2011: Diva Las Vegas, in which Dayton’s top hair salons compete on the catwalk!  There will be music, drinks, food, dancing, and live entertainment!

And now it’s time for the Dumb Joke of the Week. Drum roll please…

Why is a moon rock tastier than an earth rock?

Because it’s a little meteor.

These are just a few best bets from the DMM Calendar.  There are plenty more events listed there, so if you haven’t, I encourage you to check it out today!  Also, if you have an event to share or promote, please submit it– it’s great marketing and better yet, it’s FREE!  And finally, if you have a dumb joke to share, I’m all ears!

Have a great week Dayton!
