YP Roundup – July Events

July 1, 2010 By Megan Cooper 3 Comments

YP groups across the region are keeping busy this summer.  Here’s a look at some great events coming up through July.  Sometimes events get added/announced later – so – if I missed anything, I may add it in the comments to keep it up-to-date.  If you’ve attended any of these events or are planning on going – let us know what you like about it.

July 2- Okay – it’s not specifically YP, but it is BOTH First Friday and the kick-off of the City Folk Festival.  And if you visit City Folk Festival on Saturday night, say “Hi” to the big group of Generation Dayton members who are volunteering at the beer tent!  OR – you can join up with STREET BUZZ to get a unique YP view of the action hitting the Fest, the Wine Gallery, Sidebar and Garden Station.

July 2-5: Dayton Active is going backpacking in the Great Smokey National Park!  What a way to spend the 4th of July weekend – enjoying the nature that has inspired numerous anthems about our country!  This is a group of outdoor enthusiasts in their 20s and 30s who want to provide a great way for people to meet new friends and explore the rec opportunities around our region.

Wednesday, July 7  at 5:30 PM: Dayton Ballet Barre hosts their monthly Associate Board meeting.  Their Associate Board is currently accepting new members – join them at The Wine Gallery and Cafe along the river on Monument and Main for happy hour drink specials, appetizers provided by the Barre, and some new friends.

Thursday, July 8:  Generation Dayton hosts their Thirsty Thursday Happy Hour.  It’s an opportunity to mix and mingle with other YPs in a casual setting.  Members and non-members welcome.  Drinks at your own expense.  Join them from 5:30-7:30 PM at TJ Chumps, 12 East Linden Ave in Miamisburg.

Friday, July 9: Dayton Urban League Young Professionals host their monthly YP @ Play from 8-11 PM.  This is a great opportunity to enjoy some great drink specials at Therapy Cafe, meet some new friends, and enjoy some throwback games from when you were younger.  Free to members, $10 for nonmembers.  Food and fantastic games included, but drinks at your own cost.

Wednesday, July 14: The Dayton Creative Syndicate – the professional organization that provides creative young professionals with networking, professional development, and social activities – is hosting the Summer Social and Networking event upstairs at Adobe Gilas at the Greene from 5:30-8:30.  This is an event in conjunction with the GDAA.

Thursday, July 15: HYPE 3rd Thursday Social at The Caroline in Troy from 5:30-7:30 PM.  This is a great event designed to provide a way for YPs in the northern Miami Valley to network, meet friends, and get involved – but it’s open to everyone.  Check out a fun venue with great drink specials and fantastic food.

Friday, July 16: The Montgomery County Young Republicans invite you to their July Social at Valley Vineyards.  Join them to learn more about the group, discuss how to build the party locally, learn how you can get involved in the upcoming elections, and have some food and drink with like-minded YPs.  PLUS – if you join or renew your membership between now and then, your first drink is on them!

Monday, July 19: And the Young Republicans keep going – they host their monthly meeting with a new twist!  Check out the new events planned and be a part of the summer action.  6:30 PM at GOP Headquarters (8534 Yankee Street).

Tuesday, July 20: Generation Dayton hosts their monthly Business and Breakfast from 7-8 AM at Mimi’s Cafe at the Greene.  This event is free to attend, but breakfast is at your own expense.

Thursday, July 22: TWO GREAT EVENTS!

Generation Dayton is golfing!  Join in this shotgun start, scramble format to have a great time.  Register individually or as a foursome and have a great afternoon (1-6PM) at the Miami Valley Golf Club.  All are welcome (discounted costs for Gen D members).

The Junior League of Dayton is hosting a Membership Outreach event at Coldwater Cafe in Tipp City from 6-8 PM.  If you’re a woman interested in getting involved in this long-standing and highly recognized national organization focused on volunteerism, come talk to your local Junior Leaguers about getting involved.

Friday, July 23: TWO GREAT EVENTS!

HYPE continues their wine education seriesat the Piqua Country Club from 6-7:30 PM.  Learn the science and art of wine as it makes its way from the grapes on the vine to the wine in your glass.  Light hors d’oeuvres served.  $25 for advance registration and $35 at the door.

Generation Dayton knows how to make your Friday go faster – meet up with friends for lunch on the fourth Friday of every month!  This month they’re meeting at Sweeney’s Seafood in Centerville.  Meet with other YPs over an enjoyable lunch.  The event is free, but lunch is at your own expense.

Saturday, July 24: Looking for a classy, fun, and tasteful night out?  Join the Dayton Urban League Young Professionals as they host a Chocolate Affair at the Doubletree Hotel from 7PM – 1 AM.  The Chocolate Affair is an upscale evening event for professionals of all levels to network, dance and have a good time for a good cause. The proceeds from this very glitzy, yet chocolaty fund raising event will support 1,200 youth in the education programs at the Dayton Urban League.  $30 for members, $40 for nonmembers, and $50 for special VIP tickets.

Sunday, July 25:  The Dayton Ballet Board picnic is coming up this month!  You bring a covered dish to share and they provide the hot dogs and hamburgers.  Join the Barre at Delco Park Shelter 2 from 12-3 PM for this fun family-friendly event.  Ever think that YP events exclude young parents?  This is the event for you to bring the little ones and enjoy the summer.  The park has a lake where people can fish, a playground and several sand volleyball courts. There will also be a Corn Hole set or two so anyone who wants to play Corn Hole can do so. Since this is a family event there will be a Fourth of July themed piñata for the kids to play with.

Monday, July 26: LISTENING TOUR.  Do you want your voice heard?  Do you want the inside scoop on the happenings with the City’s finances?  This event is specific to YPs.Even if you’re not a Dayton resident, the health of the City is important to all of us.  Join with YPs all across the region (coordinated between the City, DULYP, GenD and updayton) – this event is so valuable that major outreach is occurring to get you there!  Breakfast is served, parking is validated, and you can share your ideas for ways to improve the City’s financial situation.  7AM at the Dayton Convention Center.  RSVP to be there.

Thursday, July 29 – The last Thursday of every month you can meet up and mingle with the Young AFCEAns – a group of young professionals working in technology, intelligence, electronic, information systems and communication.  Location and place TBD – check back here for the update.  Or better yet – check out their Web page and get involved!

Well – That’s what I could track down before July 1 in hopes to get you hooked into the events happening.  As more events pop up – post there here to let us all know.  And if you go to an event or have more details, feel free to share in the comments.  Enjoy your summer!

Volunteers!

June 21, 2010 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

JLD Power in Action

Volunteerism is a major aspect of most YP orgs in the region.  Maybe it’s the great feeling people get from making a difference or the perfect platform it provides for networking and socializing – either way, volunteering seems to be a on the calendars for many YP groups.  There are two YP orgs in our region that focus less on social or professional events and spend their time making a difference through volunteerism.  I talked to Jessica Saunders from the Junior League of Dayton and Lisa Henderson from the Red Cross Associate Board to learn a little more about how their groups approach volunteerism and how they’re making a difference in the region.

Saunders and Henderson have quite a bit in common – both come from other Midwestern towns and have made Dayton their home through community involvement and careers at Dayton Children’s Hospital.  Both women discovered their organizations through friends and colleagues in other local organizations.  Saunders learned about the JLD through Dayton History and her work at Children’s, while Henderson decided to get involved with the RCAB due to friends at Generation Dayton extending an invitation to a recruiting event.

But now that they’re hooked in the region and with their organizations, I had some questions for Henderson and Saunders to learn a little more about the RCAB and JLD.  You can get a lot of great information about mission, membership requirements, and upcoming events from the Web sites, but I wanted the personal stories within the organizations and the values they provide the community and their members.

I can read a Web site, but I wanted to know the short answer about the mission of these orgs and the crux of what they do.  Saunders has the elevator pitch down to a science, according to her, Junior League Dayton is “an organization that builds women to be community leaders and community volunteers.”  Henderson explains that the Red Cross Associate Board “supports the Red Cross through planning a fundraiser, The Great Escape.”  She’s quick to add,  “The funds we raise at The Great Escape stay in the Dayton region.”

And these organizations both offer unique and varied opportunities in the pursuit of their missions.  Henderson is excited about the hands-on way to make a difference through the planning of their yearly event.  She says, “The fact that (the associate board) hosts one of the Red Cross’ largest fundraisers means our board members are truly making a difference and are certainly hands on.  Each member has the opportunity to pick a committee or area that most interests them (securing sponsors, helping with marketing, etc)… It’s also a great way to develop skills – for example, I learned so much about event planning by getting involved with the logistics committee. We are able to see an event and fundraising from start to finish, which is always such a great feeling!”  Although the work the members are doing is geared toward this major one-time event, the experiences stick with the members.  Henderson explains that through the work of planning this major event, board members have the opportunity to learn more about the great work the Red Cross is doing nationally and in the region, and the board can help them connect more if they’re interested in volunteering in other ways.

Saunders is excited to talk about what makes the Junior League unique – the focus on developing women’s leadership opportunities.  For anyone who doesn’t know, the Junior League is a woman-only organizations (sorry, guys).  She believes, an “organization of all women is great because it gives you an opportunity to learn from women who are at every age and stage of their lives. There are also many leadership opportunities and training opportunities within the league – if you want to learn about fundraising there is a place for that.  If you are interested in marketing – you can learn about that.  And of course – there are many opportunities to volunteer throughout the community.”  Althought the Junior League is an organization for developing the leadership skills and community involvement for younger women (20s and 30s), they keep strong relationships with their “sustainers” who have graduated from the program and provide valuable insights and connections.

Both organizations provide great ways to get involved, meet people, and make a difference.  But – in case the descriptions aren’t enough to spark full interest – I wanted to know more.  There are plenty of volunteer opportunities out there – you can open the paper any day and find ways to give back to the community.  I asked these women what makes a volunteer organization so much worthwhile than periodic stints at individual volunteering.  Both had great insights.

JLD Holiday at Home

Saunders is excited about the total impact the League offers.  She says, “It’s really great to see what a group of people can do to improve the community. Doing something together not only results in something positive for the community but builds some bonds that last through your entire life.  The Junior League ‘sustainers’ continue to build on friendships they started in the league decades ago!    It is important for young people to join the JLD because it’s a wonderful organization that is so tied to our Dayton history.  If you are new to the community – it’s not only a great way to network but a great way to learn about the city!”  And when I challenged her that some people just aren’t “joiners,” Saunders had an answer for that, too.  She understands that feeling, but believes that “there is a time and place for joining organizations.”  Although she can’t make that decision for others, she is pleased with her choice to get involved with JLD.  She says, “I am forever grateful for the relationships – both professionally and personally – that I have from the organizations or groups that I have joined.”

If you’re anti-organization, Henderson mentions that there are plenty of nonprofits out there with great causes that provide you with the opportunity to give back -and you don’t have to “join” anything.  She points out, “You can really match your interests and time to what’s out there. Don’t limit yourself!”  But being a part of a larger organization does offer perks.  Henderson believes, “It’s great to be a part of something on an ongoing basis because you can see the long-term impact of what you do. The associate board is able to raise money, and then can see what a difference those funds have made for the community!”

Although the focus of the Red Cross Associate Board is on providing needed support to the local chapter of the Red Cross, there are great opportunities for professional development as well.  Henderson raves about the amazing people she has met through the organization both at the Red Cross and on the associate board.  Beyond networking, she says, “I have been able to participate in all areas of planning for The Great Escape and have developed skills that help me be a better leader professionally and in my other organizations.”  In addition to gaining valuable skills like leadership, communication, and project management, Henderson is also really pleased with how she’s been able to expand her social network.  She’s happy to share stories about great friends she’s met through her involvement with the associate board.  Henderson sums up her experience by stating that, “YP volunteer organizations are more than just about the volunteerism.  (By not being involved), you’ll miss out on a chance to meet new people and give back to the community!”

Saunders also has great experiences beyond the valuable community-based work she does with League.  She says, “I love the opportunity to work with some really great women on issues that affect our community.”  And although the JLD focuses on volunteerism, it has been very valuable to her in other realms.  Saunders says, “Professionally – it’s a wonderful way to network.  Socially – it’s my escape from my professional life!  There are many opportunities throughout the year to hone both of these skills.”

By speaking to these two charismatic and engaged women, I learned a lot more about the Junior League of Dayton and the Dayton chapter of the Red Cross Associate Board.  But before wrapping up, I wanted to know more about their impression of the Dayton region as a whole, what it’s like to be a YP in the city, and why some people perceive a sense of apathy from local YPs.  Saunders cited a unique “problem;”  She says, “I think there is too much to do!”  Her solution for YPs who don’t feel involved is to do some homework, explore the various opportunities out there to find the one that “clicks,” and get hooked up with one of the many nonprofits (or volunteer organizations) out there that are always looking for volunteers.

For some final advice, Henderson says, “I think there has to be personal initiative to get engaged, but there is no lack of opportunity here in Dayton. (Nonprofits) want our input, expertise, fresh ideas and energy. Get involved in one group and word tends to spread – soon you’ll have so many opportunities it will be hard to select which ones you want to do!”

Thanks to these ladies for taking the time to share their stories with me.  Learn more about these great organizations at their recruitment events this summer.  The Dayton Area Red Cross Associate Board and the Junior League of Dayton are both hosting recruitment events THIS THURSDAY so you can learn more.

June 14, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

It’s a 4th of July Holiday tradition in the Miami Valley, a 3 day world music festival and it needDeb Norris, John North and Arundi Venkayya Cox play and work at Cityfolk!s our help.  With less than 3 weeks to go there are literally hundreds of volunteer positions that haven’t been filled for this years Cityfolk Festival, July 2- 4 at RiverScape.  Having volunteered for the last few years, I can tell you it’s a great way to see the festival.  Last year I worked with some great friends serving up brewski’s just outside the main stage.  Our crew was dancing, laughing and having a great time.  The three hour shift just flew by. That’s Deb Norris, John North and Arundi Venkayya Cox pictured on the right there midway through our shift!  Looks like fun, huh?

Operations, logistics, the merchandise stand, artist hospitality and pop and  water sales also need volunteers.  So grab your friends, sign up online (you’ll get a groovy free t-shirt for your time).  The folks that work at Cityfolk bust their tails all year round to pull off this amazing array of international music, dancing, crafts and more that is perfect family entertainment. Aside from sponsorships, the beer and beverage sales from this weekend fund the year round operations for Cityfolk.

If you’ve ever been to the festival and enjoyed-I implore you to give just 3 hours of your time to make this the best fest ever!  I’ll be on Beer Crews Friday and Saturday, come join the fun!

Up Next: Listening Tours* – June 24 and July 26

You’ve got stuff to say, our City Manager is here to hear it.  You may have read the recent opinion piece in DMM about Tim Riordan’s listening tour.  The City has worked with local YP groups to put together two sessions specific to the needs of YPs.  There are opportunities to be heard at presentations on the City of Dayton’s finances by Tim Riordan, City Manager.

*City of Dayton officials have embarked on a “Listening Tour” of neighborhood and community groups to get their feedback and suggestions about Dayton’s financial future. City Manager Tim Riordan said he wants to hear the community’s ideas on how to address what is really a “structural deficit” — a fundamental imbalance between the City’s revenues and expenses. The community input will be used to develop a more comprehensive approach to create long-term financial stability. The options to be considered range from cutting expenditures by reducing/eliminating services; reducing or eliminating community and equipment investments; raising new or expanding revenue sources; or some blend of each. The Dayton Urban League Young Professionals, Generation Dayton, updayton, and many other YP organizations across the region are all encouraging their members to be a part of these conversations – don’t miss out – all YPs are invited.

Your “Traditional” YP Groups: Contemporary and Fun

May 18, 2010 By Megan Cooper 1 Comment

When people think of YP groups, I think it’s organizations like DULYP, GenD, and HYPE that come to mind.  Groups of young people – whatever jobs or interests – in a certain region working together to advance professional development, volunteerism, and fun.  There are many YP groups that specialize in serving specific professions or interests, but the Dayton region is the proud home to a few of these comprehensive and more traditional YP organizations as well.  I spoke to Demarus Crawford-White (chair of the Dayton Urban League Young Professionals) and Shanon Potts (chair of Generation Dayton) to get their take on the YP situation in the region – and they had a lot to share.

Crawford-White is Dayton born and bred, and will tell you that she was “tricked” into becoming the chair of the DULYPs.  A friend invited her to a couple of events, asked for help with some event coordination, and before she knew it –  she was the marketing chair andthings have grown from there.  Although she didn’t know what she was getting into, Crawford-White will tell you that the “trick” was one of the best things her friend ever did for her.  Potts moved to Dayton for work from a small Ohio town after a stay in Columbus for college and law school.  She was referred to the Dayton Young Professionals Association (a group founded in 2004 when many YPs determined there weren’t enough networking opportunities) right before a merge with Generation Dayton created the current program affiliated with the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.  Potts has been an active member of GenD since May 2006.

Both women tout the value that a YP org provides anyone who wants to get involved – professional networking, meeting new people,

A group of YPs enjoys YP@Play sponsored by the DULYPs.

and the value of being connected to something larger than the self.  Potts shared that her involvement with Generation Dayton opened the door for her to serve as the young professional representative on the Executive Committee for the successful Five Rivers MetroParks levy campaign in 2009.  Also, the chair of GenD holds a seat on the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees.  Those external leadership opportunities have proved invaluable to Potts as she continues to expand her network and meet new people.  Crawford-White also spoke about the value the YP organizations provide for people looking to grow professionally; being a member provides an opportunity to showcase skills in leadership, management, relationship-building, andso many more traits that employers look for.  Beyond that, membership demonstrates a commitment to community, and that drive based on passion and not the paycheck is important to employers.  Crawford-White has seen many DULYP members receive promotions due in part to the skills they’ve demonstrated through community involvement.

And it’s so easy to get involved – many events for GenD, the DULYPs, and HYPE are open to both members and non-members.  And if you’re not really a “joiner,” the ladies have some advice for you as well.  Potts explains that the benefits received by membership in GenD far outweigh the individual investment.  But if you don’t want to lose that valuable “friend time,” bring your friends along, too!  Crawford-White knows that time is an issue for all of us, but she refers back to the old adage: “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.”  The DULYPs provide an easy way to stand with other YPs in the region and bring voices together to make a difference in the community.

Although their missions differ, members of both these organizations are working toward a better Dayton region for young professionals.  I asked both women why Dayton has such a negative stigma in the view of YPs.  Crawford-White knows there are valuable events happening in the region, but says it can be tough for YPs to filter- even though she has been here her whole life, she still is amazed by the great opportunities she learns about every few months.  Crawford-White believes it only takes visiting a couple YP groups and getting on some email lists until you find a group that you “click” with.  Potts agrees with the wide selection of YP opportunities in the region.  A downtown resident and frequent visitor around all parts of the region, Potts explains that Dayton is a very easy community to navigate once you are willing to become actively involved and engaged in an organization like Generation Dayton.  She expresses a specific gratitude to the many businesses and community leaders who are working to open doors to better involve and engage YPs.

A group from GenD enjoys networking and fun at a Dragon's game.

Although the passion these ladies demonstrate for their YP organizations are clear, they both demonstrate a similar passion for the region.  Potts picks Downtown Dayton as her favorite place to hang out, explore and experience.  She most enjoys walking to and from restaurants, Dragons games, the theater, art galleries as well as being at epicenter of the region’s growing system of bike paths with easy access to Yellow Springs, Xenia and Miamisburg.  Crawford-White highlights the MetroParks as her favorite Dayton spot(s) – from Riverscape to the 2nd Street Market, Cox Arboretum and Wegerzyn Gardens – she appreciates that the “the whole system is really a neat and wallet-friendly place to spend the day.”

Hopefully, this expanded highlight of a couple of the region’s most comprehensive YP organizations – and the women who are currently at the helm –  has demonstrated the ease and important value of getting engaged in the opportunities our region offers.  Whatever you’re looking for – social activities, new friends, professional development, volunteering, education or more – could be found with the programs sponsored by Generation Dayton and the Dayton Urban League Young Professionals.  For a final thought – Crawford-White reminds us that Dayton was made famous by individuals who thought outside of the box.  The Wright Brothers, Charles Kettering, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Erma Bombeck all started their fantastic careers here in Dayton while they were “young professionals.”  She asks, “What potential does yet another Dayton YP have to make and impact?”

NOTE: Schedules didn’t work out and I was unable to speak with a representative to HYPE, but if you’re a YP in the Northern Miami Valley area and want to stay a little closer to home – check out this org that provides great opportunities. HYPE will be featured in the future.

Generation Dayton (YPs ages 21-40) is dedicated to connecting young professionals with one another and to the community so that together YPs can become integral components in the future of the success of the region.  GenD offers many unique opportunities  – popular ones include Generation Dayton Day (a community-wide volunteering opportunity), volunteer speed matching, an annual holiday party, and regular “Thirsty Thursdays” for business and social networking.

The Dayton Urban League Young Professionals (YPs ages 21-44) are the auxiliary association of the Dayton Urban League; the DULYPs work to further the five empowerment points of the League.   The DULYPs are affiliated with the National Urban League, and that partnerhsip provides great national experiences for members.  Popular local activities include the professional development series, the Next Level Entrepreneurship Conference, the monthly YP @ Play evenings, and opportunities to volunteer in the community.

In Celebration of AmeriCorps Week

May 13, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro 4 Comments

The following was submitted by DaytonMostMetro.com reader Caitlin Closser

With any revelation arises the need to announce it to the world, and I wish to announce that I am in love…with service.  This love is not without its challenges.  However, now that I’ve experienced the warmth, inspiration, and pure joy that serving creates, I know I’ll never be without it in my life again.

Service and I were mere acquaintances in the past.  Sure, we had met a few times, on various projects.  The response had been positive, but life, as always, got in the way.  With the need to earn a living, there just wasn’t enough time for it.  That is, until AmeriCorps came along.

Laid off unceremoniously from my last job, I found myself unemployed and stranded.  My previous company unleashed nearly 300 of us into an unforgiving job market.  The months following the layoff were bleak.  There was a shortage of jobs I was interested in, and I wasn’t qualified for any of them.  That was when I discovered AmeriCorps, a program that has existed since the Clinton administration, but was little known to me.  I pursued AmeriCorps for practical reasons: to build my resume, to gain the experience I lacked in the community development field.

AmeriCorps, the domestic cousin of the Peace Corps, is a year-long service commitment.  AmeriCorps members work in widespread fields, from community development to conservation to education.  In exchange for their service, members earn a small living stipend and an education grant upon completion.

This is just the part they tell you about.  The part that doesn’t fit so neatly into word packages is the assurance that for maybe the first time ever, you are doing something meaningful with your life.  It’s the smiles, the hugs, the thank you notes from the people you are helping.  It’s the ability to see the incredible progress volunteers can make towards repairing a home in a single day.

I currently serve with Rebuilding Together Dayton, a non-profit that performs home repairs and modifications at no cost to the low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners who live in them.  We are fueled by hard-working volunteers and generous sponsors.  Our mission is a safe, warm, and dry home for every Dayton homeowner.

The work can be tedious, tiresome, and downright filthy.  Just last week I had to dive into a dumpster from one of our project sites to try and retrieve stray tires before the trash could be picked up.  On a regular basis I talk with homeowners whose life stories that are so sad they would melt your heart.

As this is AmeriCorps week, I wish to celebrate by offering this homage to a program that has changed my life.  I encourage you to pursue your own love affair with service.  Visit AmeriCorps’s website.  Seek out serving opportunities near you.

Is it challenging to live near the poverty line?  Sure is.  Is the work difficult?  At times, terribly.  Does it feel like I am working towards an unachievable goal?  Sometimes it does.

Is it worth it?  Absolutely.

Young Professionals in Dayton: Who, What and Why

May 11, 2010 By Megan Cooper 2 Comments

There are so many organizations that encourage involvement in the Dayton region – clubs and associations focused on topics from entertainment to networking to recreation to hobbies to philanthropy to professional development and more.  But there’s a certain niche of organizations that are specifically directed toward “young professionals,” and that’s what I’ll be sharing with you through DaytonMostMetro.com.

First, let’s get the *full disclosure* out of the way.  I’m on the team that put together the updayton “Young Creatives Summit,” so obviously this is something I feel passionately about.  I also volunteer as the co-chair of the Culture Works Associate Board that puts together deals and events to better connect young professionals to the many arts opportunities in the region.  I’ve been to events sponsored by DULYP, DCS, GenD, the Red Cross Associate Board, and more;  I like what’s going on in the region for YPs and I’m looking forward to keeping you in the loop.

Now for this term “young professional.”  Some people I’ve talked with have been turned-off by the stigma of the term “young professional” thinking that it still carries the negative Yuppie stereotype that it did in the 80s & 90s.  Others fear the term neglects those who love their careers and callings, but are not considered 9-to-5 “professionals.”  And people who are unemployed, in temporary positions as they search for their career, or doing amazing work as volunteers, may feel left out by not being “professional”  at all.  If you have better suggestions (remember, I’m part of the group who took a shot with “young creatives”) – leave them in the comments.  The term young professional is what we have, so that’s what you’ll see throughout these articles.  I’m talking to you if you’re in your 20s/30s – regardless of career choice or lifestyle.  And if there are any stipulations about the type of young professional you have to be to participate, I’ll let you know.

There are a lot of ways that people in their 20s and 30s are getting connected, making a difference, and having fun in the region.  And these organizations aren’t necessarily working against each other.  I’ve seen some true partnerhsips developing; just over the past year, a quarterly lunch has been held so that representatives from some of the local YP organizations can gather to coordinate schedules, cross-promote events, and share ideas and resources.  There is collaborration happening where groups are supporting one another and encouraging members to explore different events.  Although our region may appear super-saturated by YP organizations, I think it speaks to the critical mass of YPs in the region that so many unique organizations can exist and remain sustainable.

So, moving forward, I’m going to try and keep you up-to-date on opportunities specifically for young professionals throughout the region. For those who claim, “there’s nothing to do,” it’s because they’re not looking hard enough.  Lots of great YP organizations, events, and people making a difference will be highlighted in the future.   If there’s anything specific you’d like to see on these pages or if you’re interested in a certain topic, leave it in the comments.

Just a few events coming up this week for YPs:

Generation Dayton: May 11 at 5:30 at the Ohio Coffee Co. – Downtown Dayton: Present and Future– A great opportunity to hear about the role of YPs in changes happening downtown, learn about great opportunities to get active this summer through Five Rivers MetroParks, and talk about how DaytonMostMetro.com is working to bring the region together online.

United Way Young Leaders Series: Connecting Career with Community – Marketing yourself in the Dayton region
May 12th from 8:00 – 9:30 am at the Sinclair Ponitz Center

GenD keeps the week moving along with their monthly Thirsty Thursday.  On May 13 it’s at Brio at the Greene starting at 5:30 PM.

Dayton Urban League Young Professionals: check out the YP at Play night at Therapy Cafe on the second Friday of each month (May 14).  They pull out the old school board games, get active with Twister and Musical Chairs, and have an all out great time.

JumpstART:  JumpstART is the activity arm of the Culture Works Associate Board.  You know you’ve wanted to check out Urban Nights (Friday, May 14), but if you don’t know what to expect or where to go – they’ll take the mystery out with a hybrid art hop/pub crawl around the city.
