Athena’s Voice, is a unique celebration of the female voice in the creation of choral music. The choir will perform diverse and eclectic works ranging from the popular sounds of Carly Simon’s ultimate working woman anthem, “Let the River Run,” to the works of Fanny Mendelssohn (sister of the famous Felix Mendelssohn), who had a successful career as a pianist and composer in her own right. The concert will also feature Gwyneth Walker’s “How Can I Keep From Singing,” Eliza Gilkyson’s “Requiem,” Ysaye Barnwell’s “Wanting Memories,” and Rosaphanye Powell’s “Down by the Riverside”.
Abbie Betinis, a Minneapolis-based composer, has written a simple, yet profound work about 9/11 – her personal response to the helplessness and sorrow she felt following the tragedies of that day. “Blessed be the Lord, My Rock” is a profound work that speaks the universal language of contemplative sorrow.
The concerts will be Fairmont Presbyterian Church
3705 Far Hills Avenue

Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced the nominees for induction in 2016. Eight of the 15 nominees are on the ballot for the first time (noted by *). To be eligible for consideration, an artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to nomination, meaning the potential members of the Class of 2016 must have issued a first recording by 1990.
About 800 industry professionals — including current hall of famers as well as historians, certain media members and others in the business — will vote on who makes the cut.
The new hall members — usually between six and eight off the ballot, along with one or two members in the non-performer and lifetime achievement award categories — will be announced in December.
The induction ceremony will be in New York City in April. This represents a change in the Foundation’s previous plans to rotate the ceremony between Cleveland, where the Class of 2015 was inducted, Los Angeles and New York.
And the nominees are:

It all beings with a mixtape. My first creation had humble beginnings, picture me crouched in front of my parents radio with a little Panasonic cassette recorder with two fingers trembling ready to press play+ record to catch my favorite song (once the DJ stopped talking). It was the start of a life long passion to create the ultimate playlist. From cassettes, reel to reel to CD’s, everything led to the modern day digital mixtape. While I can neither confirm nor deny my usage of the then illegal Napster to create my web 2.0 masterpieces, it was the gateway for many to frictionless sharing. The very notion of taking digital music and creating something you could send to your friends around the corner or on the other side of the world was in a word, amazing. But, we all know that stealing is bad and thus a new paradigm was needed. At the time, there were plenty of ways to buy digital music and listen to your hearts content. Sending that music to others had pretty much regressed back to burning CD’s. Meanwhile in Europe, my friends were extolling the virtues of a new service called Spotify. You could pay a monthly fee, have unlimited access to music, create playlist and download them to your computer or mobile device..
Well, I still had to wait until the doors opened for America. Once launched, Spotify was the truth. I opened my account the very first day and had visions of musical communication on a global scale. Yes, yes, I know. you’re thinking Duane, aren’t there other services? Indeed- Rdio, Apple Music, Google Play and Amazon Prime all do an excellent job of letting you listen to music… by yourself. Remember, this story is about crafting something special and gifting it to others. Oddly, rival services didn’t seem to be the stumbling block, people were the issue. I discovered, some folks are really weird about exposing their musical taste. They’ll share what they had for breakfast or if tf they forgot to wear underwear but ask them to share a playlist and it becomes problematic.. Look, if my friend Bryan can admit he loves Creed and Nikki can squeal over boy bands, it’s time to open your musical vault and let us peek inside. I want to declare a sonic revolution. Let your freak flag fly and spread the love. Let others know the soundtrack to your day, week, house cleaning driving or whatever gets you on the groove.
I’ll start. I’ll post three of my many playlist via Spotify here on DMM and I’ll share a reader submitted list on a weekly basis. Submit your list here.

Star Gaze is a grassroots music and arts festival initially founded in 2013 by members of Nevele from Cincinnati, OH. The festival was built to celebrate the talents and community of southern Ohio and eastern Indiana but has since expanded to include event producers and artists from across the midwest. Star Gaze is two days and two nights of live music, visual art installations, flow performances, impactful workshops, and human togetherness, set among the backdrop of scenic Oxford, Ohio.
Since the inaugural year, Star Gaze invites attendees to embrace their own creativity and expand outside self-preposed limitations on expression; making their own contribution to the festival experience with whatever inspiration takes hold in the moment. Painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians, singers, and artists of all shades, varieties, and skill levels are welcome to share their gifts under the canopy of stars and gaze up into the grand reflection of our collective self.

Jim Bucher emcee’s the Battle between 3 bands, for a $275 grand prize – to be determined by a panel of three judges.
The bands, which will each perform for 30 minutes, include:
Ghetto Circus, a band from Louisville, Kentucky, that performs music ranging from classic rock to heavy metal. Band members include Kel Bowman, Jordyn Cunnagin and Ryan Slaton.
Jacob Shane & Company, a Dayton-based band that performs rock and blues. Band members include Jacob Shane, Sam Davis, Sarah Davis, Andy Couch, and Chris Cooney.
Out of the Attic, a local band that has been together for 18 years, and features classic rock & roll along with contemporary rock. Band members include Joel Frydman, Jon Vargas, Ed Buffington, Keith Browning, Mark Harman, Chris Drake, Katharyn Kendall and Lyn Morton.
The New Old-Fashioned, a local Rock & Roll/Alternative Country band is throwing a big party this weekend! The occasion? The release of their second album, Low-Down Dirty Summer Nights. Already critically acclaimed, this new release is highly anticipated by TNOF fans.
Led by vocalist and songwriter David Payne, the voices and instruments of Kent Montgomery (Guitar), Tom Blackbern (Bass) & Matt Oliver (Drums) are very present in the New Old-Fashioned’s signature sound: big, choral vocal harmonies atop a thick Americana backdrop. Upon first listen, TNOF’s primary influences will become apparent: picture the heartland rock of Tom Petty or the Old 97’s paired with the big vocals of the Beach Boys or Queen.
Ready to listen live? Stop by Gilly’s Jazz on Saturday September 26th at 8pm. Special guests OldNews and Harold & Max of The Repeating Arms will warm up the stage. All ages are welcome. Show starts at 8pm
What do you get when you mix some local teachers, drums, guitars, a keyboard and couple of kazoos? The answer is the iconic, family friendly band that has been entertaining fans at special events and festivals since 1973. The Rejects, however, are disbanding as a couple of members are moving out of state for retirement. All good things must come to an end.
As a result, Friday, Sept 25th from 4pm – 7pm, The Rejects will play their last Happy Hour concert at The Soft Rock Cafe at 877 E. Franklin Street in Centerville. Free Pizza will be served to attendees.. and of course there will be drink specials.
Known for playing classic rock, oldies and even some new hits, The Reject’s shows are never short on talent, humor or fun.
It all started 42 years ago when some Centerville teachers Dan Hill and Steve Flaum, joined with Dan’s brother, the drummer. Over the years the lineup has changed slightly, but the basic core have remained. Gary Knight of “The Fries” was once a part of the band, and the addition of Beth Hill many years ago allowed keyboards and more vocal variety into the repertoire.
In 1994, the band was inducted into the Kazoo Hall of Fame for their special contributions to “Kazoo Rock.” But make no mistake, this is a great live Rock n Roll band. People of all ages dance and sing along with the hits of the group. Lots of gags apply such as Mr Flaum aka Dr Humm’s “severed mannequin hand” holding the microphone to the mic stand. Or a suitcase marked BRAIN in a humorous misspelling of Brian Hinder’s name. Who can forget the “You’re Sixteen” sing-a-long” where the band holds up signs of “60” during the lyrics, suggesting ” You’re 60, you’re beautiful and you’re mine” as a sign of the times.
From festivals to parties, from amphitheaters to bars, and even gymnasiums, The Rejects have kept a busy schedule over the years. They have entertained thousands and thousands of people from the Miami Valley and beyond. First performing to friends and students, to family members and just overall fans, the band now finds themselves performing to kids of their students and the band’s grandkids. Far from rejects, the band members have proven themselves as pillars in the Dayton area communities.
My how time has flown and The Rejects fan base has proved strong through each generation. Make sure you don’t miss this final concert celebration at Soft Rock Cafe with free pizza!
DON’T FORGET or MISS THIS SHOW !
HERE’S THE SKINNY:
WHAT: REJECT’S LAST HAPPY HOUR CONCERT

Subterranean, a local band on the rise, is hosting their 4 year anniversary with an epic show: The Intergalactic Meltdown! The name comes from their friends The Big Black Galactic, from Sandusky, who will be sharing the stage with the Sub-T boys for this special event.
“The Big Black Galactic will have you ebbing and flowing in the intergalactic with their dance worthy improvisation and then Subterranean will continue to meltdown your faces with their intense and provocative sounds” states the band’s event page. I’m a huge fan of technical improvisation, and I couldn’t be more excited for this show!
