The Co’s New Lecture Series

February 13, 2023 By Dayton937

The Contemporary Dayton (The Co) continues to expand its programming with the establishment of a new lecture series featuring some of the most incisive people and perspectives for our time. CONVERSATIONS will take place in The Tank at the Dayton Arcade.

The 2023 Season will feature three diverse programs from literary and performance thought-leaders from across the country and within the Miami Valley.

March 2, 2023  I  HANIF ABDURRAQIB

In conversation with Cameron Granger, Columbus-based filmmaker

Limited copies of A Little Devil in America will be available at the event for purchase for $20 + tax (credit cards only). Opportunities for the speaker to sign purchased books will take place immediately after the talk.

Hanif Abdurraqib is an award-winning poet, essayist, and cultural critic from Columbus, Ohio. His newest release, A Little Devil In America (Random House, 2021) was a winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal and the Gordon Burn Prize. His essays and music criticism have been published in The FADER, Pitchfork, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. His first full length poetry collection, The Crown Ain’t Worth Much, was released in June 2016 from Button Poetry. It was named a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Book Prize, and was nominated for a Hurston-Wright Legacy Award.

His first collection of essays, They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us, was released in winter 2017 by Two Dollar Radio and was named a book of the year by Buzzfeed, Esquire, NPR, Oprah Magazine, Paste, CBC, The Los Angeles Review, Pitchfork, and The Chicago Tribune, among others. He released Go Ahead In The Rain: Notes To A Tribe Called Quest with University of Texas press in February 2019. The book became a New York Times Bestseller, was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize, and was longlisted for the National Book Award. His second collection of poems, A Fortune for Your Disaster, was released in 2019 by Tin House, and won the 2020 Lenore Marshall Prize. In 2021, Abdurraqib was named a MacArthur Fellow.

Books by Hanif Abdurraqib for purchase in the CoSHOP: A Little Devil in America, (Random House, 2021) $20 + tax; Go Ahead in The Rain: Notes To A Tribe Called Quest, (University of Texas Press, 2019) $15 + tax; and A Fortune for Your Disaster (W.W. Norton, 2019) $18 + tax.

April 13, 2023  I  SAEED JONES

In conversation with Dionne Custer Edwards, Director of Learning & Public Practice, Wexner Center for the Arts

Limited copies of Alive at The End of the World will be available at the event for purchase for $20 + tax (credit cards only). Opportunities for the speaker to sign purchased books will take place immediately after the talk.

Saeed Jones was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and grew up in Lewisville, Texas. His debut poetry collection, Prelude to Bruise, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and was awarded the 2015 PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry. The collection also received a starred review in Publishers Weekly, which described the book as, “a fever dream, something akin to magic.” NPR described Prelude as a “book seamed in smoke; it is a dance that invites you to admire the supple twist of its narrative spine; it is hard and glaring and brilliant.”

In 2019, Saeed released his highly anticipated memoir, How We Fight for Our Lives. As the New Yorker observed “his title carries an edge of social critique. To be black, gay, an American, the book suggests, is to fight for one’s life.” NPR raved “Jones’s voice and sensibility are so distinct that he turns one of the oldest of literary genres inside out and upside down.” The memoir won the 2019 Kirkus Prize for Nonfiction, a 2020 Lambda Literary Award, as well as a 2020 Stonewall Book Award.

Books by Saeed Jones available for purchase in the CoSHOP: Alive at The End of the World (Coffee House Press, 2022) $20 + tax.

A Soldier’s Play

February 11, 2023 By Dayton937

A SOLDIER’S PLAY, the 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning thriller by Charles Fuller, has rocketed back into the spotlight, thanks to this 2020 Tony Award®-winning Best Revival from Roundabout Theatre Company. “This is a play that deserves to be staged regularly all over America—though it’s hard to imagine that it will ever be done better than this. It keeps you guessing all the way to the final curtain” (The Wall Street Journal).

In 1944, on a Louisiana Army base, two shots ring out. A Black sergeant is murdered. And a series of interrogations triggers a gripping barrage of questions about sacrifice, service, and identity in America. Broadway’s Norm Lewis leads a powerhouse cast in the show Variety calls “a knock-your-socks-off-drama,” directed by two-time Tony® winner Kenny Leon.

The Human Race Theatre Company and Dayton Live are proud to bring the national tour of this award-winning production to the Victoria Theatre.

Dayton Donut Festival On Tour Kicks Off Friday

February 7, 2023 By Dayton937

Started in 2021, the 3rd Annual Dayton Donut Fest On Tour kicks off an eleven day run featuring 11 local donut shop participating.  According to Lisa Grigsby, co-founder of Planned2Give, this event was created during Covid, a time when traditional fundraising events just couldn’t happen. But it was such a success, that they’ve continued it.

For $30 ticket buyers get a booklet that includes a coupon for 2 free donuts from each of the participating donut shops.  They’ve got from February 10th – 20th to visit all the shops and pick out their sweet treats. It’s a great family friendly
event, too!

Since Valentine’s Day falls within this promotion, it makes a great gift for loved ones and the last day of the event is President’s Day, which many people have off, so you can plan on doing a donut feast that day.

Participating Donut shops include:

  • Ashley’s Pastry Shop
  • Bear Creek Donuts
  • Bill’s Donut Shop
  • Donut Palace
  • Duck Donuts
  • Hole N One Donuts
  • Jim’s Donut Shop
  • Stan The Donut Man
  • W. Social Tap and Table
  • The Donut Haus Bakery
  • The Neighborhood Nest

Every event Planned2Give produces has a charity component to it and this beneficiary of the Donut Festival is Hannah’s Treasure Chest. They  work exclusively with community partners and do not interact directly with the families they serve. Here are some more facts about how they operate:

• We currently work with 75 partners throughout Southwestern Ohio, including social service agencies, nonprofits, and schools.
• these partners can submit care package requests for any number of their clients (children in need).
• These care packages typically include clothing (daytime clothes, pajamas, coats, shoes, socks, underwear, etc.), diapers, toys, books, baby equipment such as car seats and strollers, bed sheets, and more. Some requests are for only one thing, such as a coat or car seat.
• Each family can request items every three months.
• The $100 includes our bed program, where we give cribs and toddler beds to children through age 3.
• We serve children ages birth-age 18. We also help mothers-to-be who are scheduled to give birth in the next two months.
• We receive no government funding and rely on grants and donations from the community to operate.
• In 2022, we distributed over 392,000 items to over 6,200 children, which equals over 7,500 items to 120 children per week.
You can pick up a $30 ticket booklet at the following times/spots:
Fri, Feb 10th 4-6pm The Donut Haus in Springboro
Sat, Feb 11th 10am-noon Duck Donuts on Brown St, Downtown

Crafted & Cured Set To Open in Troy

February 7, 2023 By Dayton937

Crafted & Cured will host a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony with the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce and city officials on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. This marks the official opening of Crafted & Cured on Market Street in Troy.  Ribbon cutting is scheduled for 4:30 PM and Crafted & Cured will open immediately following at 5 PM with the full menu available for purchase.

Regular operating hours begin February 9, 2023; Wednesday through Thursday 3-10 PM, Friday through Saturday 3 PM – midnight, and Sunday 11 AM – 7 PM.

“We feel incredibly honored to re-open Crafted & Cured to serve the greater Dayton community. We’ve missed our clientele and we look forward to foraging new relationships in the community of Troy and beyond. Everyone’s been incredibly supportive,” expressed Andy Routson and Christian Alvarez, co-owners of Crafted & Cured.

Crafted & Cured’s new location at 8 S Market St., holds significant historical value to the area, originally constructed in 1929 as The First Troy National Bank (formerly known as US Bank). During soft opening events, customers captured photos exploring the original architecture and bank features, specifically enjoying the Safety Deposit Vault, one of two original vaults in the space.

“Crafted & Cured will provide a unique dining environment in one of Troy’s most iconic structures. There is no doubt that this location will become a regional destination for people wanting a relaxing experience in a truly distinctive atmosphere.

This will be known as a place for people to spend time to sit and talk. There are no televisions, and the furnishings are inviting. There are few places like this anywhere and we are fortunate to have something like this in Troy,” explained Wade Westfall, landlord and owner of Four Sons Development.

Dayton Fine Art Store To Close

February 6, 2023 By Dayton937

The Hue House, a fine art supply store and studio, which opened in Aug of 2020 on Fifth Street in St. Anne’s Hill historic neighborhood will be closing.  Owners  Dana and Ryan Vingris were “really excited to bring easy access to fine art supplies and expertise to Dayton’s vibrant arts community.”

They posted this announcement on their Facebook page:
With a broken and heavy heart, we have made the difficult decision to close Hue House mid-March.
The store has really struggled for the last two years. At the end of December we took a long and hard look at the numbers along with the other variables that have made business difficult. The sales data paired with supply chain shortages, significant price increases of goods and shipping, supplier challenges and the residual effects of the pandemic painted a very clear picture of something that is no longer sustainable. We have worked to hang on as long as possible but are out of grit and resources to keep things going.
So many of you have become wonderful friends and an extension of our family and for that we are ever grateful. We appreciate those of you who made a choice to shop local when possible and supported the store.
While the store is closing, we are fortunate to be able to take away the important things – the relationships. We will continue to be around Dayton and hope to stay in touch while we take time to focus on our family and rebuild.

Dana, Ryan, Rowan and Margot

Starting Wednesday, the store will be discounted 40%. Additionally, we will be selling tables, shelving, storage lockers, flat files, displays, studio equipment and other miscellaneous store items. Information on what is available will be available in coming weeks. We plan to have regular hours for the month of February and will have we adjusted schedule in March that will be announced at a later date so please continue to follow on social media for updated hours and schedule information.
We will honor existing gift cards while the store remains open but will no longer be selling new gift cards. Monthly discounts will no longer apply during the closing sale.
