MCD’s Citizen Precipitation Observer of 51 Years Retiring At Age 96
For 51 years, Dorothy Stebbins has measured precipitation (rain, snow, sleet & hail) 365 days a year for the Miami Conservancy District’s (MCD) Precipitation Observer Network. Dorothy is one of 42 citizen observers that has been a rock star for MCD. Dorothy has faithfully performed this work for the benefit of the region. The data that Dorothy and the other observers collect helps the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) with forecasting floods and assessing changes to weather patterns, including droughts.

MCD’s manager of water resource monitoring and data analysis, Mike Ekberg, and general manager, MaryLynn Lodor, visited Dorothy and her son Dan Stebbins today alongside the rain gage that she has used to record precipitation all these years. She was honored by Senator Matt Huffman, and Senator Stephan Huffman, with a proclamation for her outstanding public service. She was also gifted MCD’s “A Flood of Memories” coffee table book, and given a big thank you for her service. Dorothy recalled stories, passed down from her grandparents and parents, about surviving the 1913 flood and having to seek higher ground.
In 1998, the Dayton Daily News featured a story on Dorothy when she had served as an observer for more than 20 years. Dorothy framed the article and shared it with Mike and MaryLynn when they delivered MCD’s gifts of thanks today.
At 96 years old, MCD is honored to welcome Dorothy into retirement as she passes the observer responsibilities to her son. This maintains the family legacy, and will ensure that the data continues to benefit the region.
MCD’s vision is to have thriving communities, a healthy watershed and a higher quality of life, sustained by well-managed water resources throughout the watershed. MCD’s mission is to protect lives, property and economic vitality within the Great Miami River Watershed through an integrated and balanced system that provides unfailing flood protection, preserves water resources, and promotes enjoyment of our waterways.

La Comedia Presents: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.
An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.
A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius.
Smoothie Bar Opening in Wright-Dunbar
Juicing Jammers Juice and Smoothie Bar, which started out in 2007, as Dayton’s first Black owned and woman owned mobile juicery. Owner Tawnni Miles is a registered Nurse who started her business in 2017 with a small refrigerator in Tae Winston’s Entrepreneur Shop. She then purchased her trailer in 2020. She’s been operating at events and farmer’s markets around town. Now she’ signed a multiple year lease with Wright Dunbar, Inc. Tawnni shared that it’s surreal to now have this location, where she first now house her shop.
The Soft Opening is on Friday, July 29, 2022 10am to 3pm at 13 North Williams St. located in the Historic Wright Dunbar Business District.
The brick-and-mortar space will allow for an expanded menu to include yogurt bowls, acai bowls, lemonades, overnight oats, avocado toast, fruit bowls and salads. Her smoothies run $8 for a 16 oz cup.
Miles shared she worked at McDonald’s growing up and the customer service training she received there taught her so much about dealing with customers.
Tawnni said, “As a registered nurse, I knew changing our diets was key to curing the ailments attacking health. So, what better way than to show up with the healthiest and most nutritious juices, lemonade, and yogurt bowls”.
As part of their opening they are asking customers to help name the smoothies, so you can sample the four smoothies and then submit their choice for names. On Monday they will release the winning names. Here’s a peak at the opening menu:

Grant Program Promotes Cultural Tourism with Roadside Markers
Thanks to a new partnership between the Ohio Arts Council (OAC) and William G. Pomeroy Foundation, Ohio communities can now highlight their stories, customs, and traditions through a roadside marker grant program named Legends & Lore®.
Launched by the Pomeroy Foundation in 2015, the Legends & Lore grant program helps communities commemorate their local folklore and legends, and promote cultural tourism with roadside markers. The OAC, which funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities, has joined the grant program as a state partner of the Pomeroy Foundation. The OAC will help vet grant applications and ensure the legitimacy of the folklore proposed for commemoration.
“Encouraging cultural tourism is an important part of promoting a vibrant Ohio arts economy,” said Donna S. Collins, OAC executive director. “The Ohio Arts Council looks forward to spotlighting local folk and traditional arts and culture through Legends & Lore.”
The Pomeroy Foundation is a philanthropic organization based in Syracuse, N.Y. One of the Foundation’s main initiatives is to help people celebrate their community’s history by providing grants for roadside markers. Since 2005, the Foundation has awarded close to 1,800 grants for markers and bronze plaques in 46 states and Washington, D.C.
“We are delighted to partner with the Ohio Arts Council to bring this unique grant opportunity to the Buckeye State,” said Deryn Pomeroy, trustee and director of strategic initiatives at the Pomeroy Foundation. “The Legends & Lore marker program has already helped communities around the country commemorate the cultural traditions, customs, and stories that are important to them. Through our partnership with the OAC, we look forward to recognizing Ohio’s diverse landscape of folk and traditional arts with roadside markers.”
More than 140 Legends & Lore marker grants have been awarded by the Pomeroy Foundation since the program’s inception. In addition to Ohio, Legends & Lore grants are currently available in the following states: Alabama, Connecticut, Idaho, Louisiana, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, and West Virginia. Prospective applicants must apply through a local 501(c)(3) organization, such as a historical society; nonprofit academic institution; or a local, state, or federal government entity.
There are two Legends & Lore grant rounds each year. The second Legends & Lore grant round in 2022 will open on Monday, Aug. 29. The deadline to submit a marker grant application during that round will be Monday, Oct. 17, 2022. Legends & Lore grant funding includes the full cost of a marker, pole, and shipping.
