Head Out To The Greene County Fair

July 30, 2022 By Dayton937

The 183rd Greene County Fair begins its run Sunday, July 31, through Saturday, August 6, 2022, at the Greene County Fairgrounds, 120 Fairground Road. Xenia, OH.

“We’ve been waiting 365 days for this.” Said Kala Benton, one of the fair’s directors. “It is amazing when you think about it. Just a couple of weeks ago here at the Greene County Fairgrounds there wasn’t much activity and now the people, animals, food trailers, vendors and rides which move in soon, it looks a little like a scaled down version of Disneyland and we couldn’t have done any of it without our dedicated staff, directors’, and volunteers. A well-oiled machine.” Benton added.

The Greene County Fair is the oldest fair west of the Alleghenies. A nice mix of rides, games, food & entertainment await fairgoers.  Plus, the 4H tradition continues with proud young people showing their prize-winning animals.

FAIR HOURS

Our fair opens at 8am – and closes following that evening’s grandstand event.

Daily Gate Admission $8 (9 and under free with paying adult) Plus, parking is always FREE.

SUNDAY, JULY 31, OPENING DAY ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Rabbit showmanship and judging, English Horse Show & Showmanship, 4-H Show, Sheep Decorating Contest, with our opening ceremonies at the grandstands- 6pm.

Followed by the always fun kiddie calf scramble at 7pm, then the older kids get to try their best for their calf scramble. Folks if you’ve never experienced a calf scramble, you are in for some laughs. It’s a hoot. (Please do not attempt this at home.)

During the week we have a food drive event with a discount on admission for a non-perishable food item donation, family fun night with discounted ride wristbands, demo-derby, harness racing, truck and tractor pulls, great fair food, plus much more. (Please keep in mind our rides do not open until Monday, August 1.)

Due to rising fuel and general increased costs, the previous announced ride wrist bands price has increased to $20. But on Family Fun Day- August 3, wristbands are just $15 after 4pm. AGAIN WEDNESDAY ONLY, all other days of ride operations, bands are priced at $20.

On Wednesday, August 3, a special tribute will take place for the late Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer at 5pm. Sheriff Gene was a huge supporter of our fair and he and is wife would show up early and stay late.

AlphaTrips X & N….A TwoSome of Short-Excursions….

June 29, 2018 By Joshua Stucky

After the popularity of Alpha-Trips, our quick trips in and around the area, I thought it was time to up the ante and give you a whiz-bang twosome.

Here are some ideas for the following areas, that you can do in a day:

Letter X: Xenia

For anyone that has lived in the Dayton area long-term, you may be thinking, there are things to do and see in Xenia? Seriously? And the surprising answer is yes. Known around the US as the city that begins with an ‘X’, is truly marks the spot for some unknown excitement and fun food.  Xenia has long been marked as the home of the tornado, a twister they can’t seem to shake. But there is much more to this little burg that awaits you!

Head over for the history, and there is plenty of it. Check out the Greene County Historical Society, which is basically comprised of three buildings. You will find an old cabin there, the Galloway, which was relocated to the city itself and answers many of the questions about the great chief Tecumseh and his friendship with the family.I have long been obsessed with Tecumseh and his desire to save his Native Families in the area. The guides in the cabin have a multitude of answers to your questions. Many artifacts and historical items await you at the Galloway.

Next, you will find the Victorian Town House, which is chock full of antiques and memorabilia from the best of days in Xenia. Preserved beautifully and presented well, its a fun trip down memory lane. Lastly, a brick building housing more Greene County historic items, as well as a slew of pictures of the infamous tornado completes the history lesson perfectly.

After getting your lesson, grab a bike, as Xenia’s bikeways (Greene Way Bike Trails)are considered by many the ‘best in Ohio.’ You can ride this mostly flat, gorgeous stretch for miles. Recommended is the trip from Spring Valley to Yellow Springs. Xenia’s stretch, is NOT to be missed as the trail follows tree covered spaces and a soft rolling stream (the Little Miami) that eventually forms Clifton Gorge and John Bryan.

So, now you are hungry….and I have to say it, go to Nick’s.

If you have read my articles previously, you know I aim for the fancy, but Nicks’s does the bar food thing perfectly. Grab a Menage’a’Trois (sandwich that is) or the Sexy Club (again a sandwich). Both are sure to please. Add in some wings (chick’s strippers) and fries….and since you’ve been biking, grab aan ice cold Great Lakes draft. It’s fun and it’s definitely satisfying. Overall: ‘X’tremely interesting history and great recreation in Xenia!

Letter N: New Carlisle

How many times have you seen the sign for New Carlisle on 70 and thought ‘wonder what’s up there?’ A lot actually! Head into town early and stop at the ‘World-Famous’ Mel-o-Dee restaurant. The Mel-O-Dee has been revived since its close encounter with a funnel cloud recently, but from the ashes, the same delicious food we all know and love. For breakfast, you will hear people oinking about the Mel-O-Dee Chops and Eggs, a center cut chop with two eggs. I have long though they have great coffee, and still am trying to figure out what brand it is.

They do lunch and dinner well too!
Off you go to find some bourbon. BOURBON? Yep, that’s right. New Carlisle is home to the Indian Creek Distillery.

The tiny family-owned business is perfect for touring, and taking in the beautiful setting. It’s literally like a postcard, it is so picturesque. There is a great history of the land, how the distillery got started and it’s ‘best kept secret’ status revealed. Great visit for all…check it out!

Stop in Penny Lane for a quick coffee. It’s a cute. quaint, quintessential coffee and tea shop.  They make a great latte, and the service is on-point!

Then what, you ask?

New Carlisle is home to MVG, Meadow View Growers, many put it at the top of the ‘Greenhouse’ lists in the area. Check out the big chair for photos, and make sure you say hi to the goats. MVG is more than just plants, its a destination at this point. For serious gardeners, you will find an extensive number of exotics…I bought 3 of the Flamingo plants!!

A little more food or beer maybe? Ok….571 Grill House is your spot! They have 17 beers on draft, or did at this writing, and some really yummy food. One thing that will floor you is the great atmosphere here. You certainly see why it’s a treasure for New Carlisle. We had a relaxing visit, sharing stories, beers and great wings. The service was sweet, and informative about the draft choices, and menu options. Overall: New Carlisle mixes it up for newbies to their town…it’s nice, new and nostalgic.

Next time, we visit H: Hocking Hills and Y: Yellow Springs.

Keep traveling folks…it’s fun around here!

New Brewery Coming To Xenia

April 21, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Devil Wind Brewing is a venture between four friends and their dream to produce world-class beer. Their plan is to brew the most outstanding local beer in Xenia, reaching out to the growing craft beer community and bring them to Greene County.

The Brewery, which will be located at 130 South Detroit Street in Xenia, hopes to help make Xenia a destination point.  As Xenia undergoes a renewal of their  town center, Devil Wind Brewing is ready to be part of this exciting trend in community involvement and growth.

The Four Partners:

Dave Hatfield has lived his entire life in the Dayton area, graduating from Beavercreek High School in 1986 and Wright State University in 1998 with a B.S. in Management Information Systems.   He has worked since he was thirteen years old and has always enjoyed interacting with others. Currently he is employed at EVAD Technologies, providing management information systems support to a variety of clients all over the Dayton and Cincinnati Area. His work at EVAD has given him the opportunity to meet people in many different professions. He also has extensive experience in construction and has remodeled over 25 homes and built one from the ground up.   His passion for craft beer began way before it was popular, touring craft breweries all over the country for over 20 years. Dave enjoys hiking and cycling on the area bike trails, and knows the appeal of having local breweries accessible by bike. He has watched with great pride as the craft brewery scene exploded in Dayton helping to build local support through various media outlets including creating the “What’s Brewing Dayton?” website and radio show. Through the generosity of local brewers, Dave has gotten a lot of insight into how successful craft breweries run and looks forward to realizing his dream of owning and operating one.  Dave is a self proclaimed Hop Head- the bigger the better!

Perry Wyatt is Texas-born and has lived in Greene County since 1971. He lived in Beavercreek when it was a tiny town and watched the Xenia tornado from the roof of his parent’s home. Perry graduated from Beavercreek High School in 1984 and had several work experiences that shaped his interest in owning a business and brewing beer: chef’s assistant at the Paragon Supper Club; construction worker; laborer at Larrick’s in Dayton; musician in several bands in the area; assembler at Systems Research Labs in Beavercreek. He attended Wright State University and finished a B.S. in Management Information Systems which led to working over 20 years at Wright Patterson AFB. An avid hiker and rider of the Greene County bike trails, the original Miami Trail Brewery shaped Perry’s interest in craft beer and he hasn’t stopped dreaming of bringing craft beer brewing back to Xenia. Perry and his business partner investigate breweries everywhere they go and have helped build other breweries in downtown Dayton. As a result, all of Perry’s interests and experiences have created the opportunity to combine passion and work in brewing craft beer and owning a successful, local brewery. Perry’s favorite beers are big German lagers.

Michael Van Kirk is a native of Bellbrook, Ohio and graduated from Bellbrook High School in 2010. After graduating, he attended Wright State University and pursued a degree in Music Performance. While at WSU, Michael held several leadership positions within the music department and helped coordinate the WSU Wind Symphony’s tour to Carnegie Hall. Michael has consistently held positions working in the service industry throughout his adult life and that has played a large role in his interest in the growing craft beer industry. With 3 years of brewing experience, Michael has a diverse set of skills and knowledge about the technical aspects of brewing beer. Michael is confident that his talents combined with those of his business partners can deliver a quality, locally-owned product to the Xenia community. Michael is a fan or sours and looks forward to brewing them.

Doug Lane is a craft beer lover who is passionate about the history, and the ever-changing world of beer. Doug grew up in West Carrollton, where he graduated high school in 2010. After high school, he attended Wright State University, where he received a degree in Music Education (2014). While in college, Doug found an interest in homebrewing through his friend, Michael. This interest helped him receive a job in the beer industry. He worked in the taproom at the Dayton Beer Company, and also gained experience in the brewery as a cellarman. He also aided in cleaning and filling kegs, milling grains, and beer/wort transfer. In his four years at school, Doug learned the true value of dedication to a craft. Through constant practice, and unwavering dedication, he strove to be the absolute best he could be at his art. Doug plans to take this same type of passion for beer, and push himself to create the finest examples of commercial-style beers, while also aiming to push the limits of craft beer. Doug is a hops fan, a true lover of IPA’s.

Devil Wind recently recorded an episode of the Gem City Podcast.

The four partners began developing this brewery concept over a year ago and originally had  a Huber Heights location in mind.  But things didn’t work out there. Dave Hatfield and his wife were on a bike ride when they rode past the Xenia location on the bike path and thought, there should be a brewery there.  And come this fall there will be!

While it may take them up to 6 months to get their licenses, they have already got their equipment on order.  While looking at used equipment, they ended up deciding to go all new and will set up a 5 barrel brewing system.  Finding it from an Ohio company was important to the foursome and Systech Stainless Works in Canton had just what they needed.

Devil Wind Brewing will support local businesses whenever possible, choosing to use Montgomery Insurance and Investments for all insurance purposes, Narrow Path Plumbing for drain work, as well as local farms for our hops and grains. The guys couldn’t say enough about helpful the city of Xenia and folks at Greene County have been in the launching of their business.

Devil Wind is committed to giving back to the great community of Xenia.  Because of its close proximity to the Schneider House of Hope, DW Brewing will have fundraising nights to provide aide to the families who are housed there. Devil Wind will also participate in the Purple Passion 5K by releasing a special beer for the race, as well as having members of the brewery’s team participate in the race. The brewery also hopes to reach out to the local home brewing community by having brew-outs and home brewing competitions throughout the year. Devil Wind will also utilize the close proximity to Xenia Station on the Bike Trail by working with a local bicycle shop to promote the use of the trail during the year.

DW Brewing plans to utilize the rich history of Xenia and Greene County in several ways.   One historical reference will be in naming our different beers. They will educate patrons from all over the area with stories from the community’s past. Ultimately, because of the Native American-inspired name, they plan to reach out to the Native American community through Blue Jacket.   The historical connection will be enhanced by highlighting The Frontiersmen (A. Eckert) and the Ohio Historical Society’s maps, symbols, objects, and diagrams of the area that coincide with the amazing community and its longstanding heritage. Daniel Boone, Tecumseh, Simon Kenton, and other Ohio/Kentucky heroes will be honored at Devil Wind Brewing. They also will have multiple decor items honoring the previous Xenia brewery, Miami Trail Brewing.

Good luck to the guys of Devil Wind, can’t wait to be drinking your beer!

Nick’s Restaurant in Xenia, a Must Eat !

July 28, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Nick’s French Onion Soup -one of the best, ever

One of our goals is to inform Dayton Foodies about fantastic dining spots that they may not be aware of.  One of the best examples of a Mom and Pop place that is off the beaten path, featuring incredible menu items, is Nick’s Restaurant.  Located  in Xenia, it is a place with a style all it’s own.  Style is one thing, but Nick’s also has irresistible, addicting food throughout the menu.  The restaurant was started in the 1940’s by the late owner Nick Malavazos and was formerly called “Say How Do.”  Since Nick’s passing, the local ownership has changed the restaurant name, but kept the tradition alive with great eats and friendly service.

How good is their food?  At the recent Kickin’ Chicken Wing Festival at Fraze, Nick’s won 5 out of the 6 awards, including Best Side, People’s Choice Award, Best Wing, Best Sauce, and Best Booth.   The Big Ragu loved their wings and would recommend their “Secret Sweet Hot Damn Sauce.”  Wings are only a small portion of their offerings, and this was just the start of our menu exploration. Nicks has a full bar and has that type of watering hole atmosphere that spills into the dining area.  The drink offerings are vast, but we were here for food.

The Award Winning “Sweet Hot Damn Wings”

We tried some unique appetizers including fried smelts.  For those who do not know, smelts are small fish about the size of sardines that are fried whole, but headless.  They are usually served with tartar sauce.  The Big Ragu loves smelts our guests took a bite of the little fish and liked them so much that we had the waitress sit down and try them as well.  Food Adventure accomplished!  Nick’s Restaurant has another spectacular appetizer, the hand breaded deep fried mushrooms.  Light and crispy, our mushrooms were cooked perfectly.  The waitress then  brought out one of the best french onion soups we have ever eaten.  We also enjoyed some freshly cut potato chips.  There are a ton of good appetizers to choose from! Your Food Adventurers were already very impressed, and we had not yet tasted an entree.

The staff then brought out our dinners which were piping hot.  The Big Ragu ordered Pan Fried Walleye.  The piece of fish was huge and overlapped the plate like Ragu’s belly on his belt.  The walleye was superb and served with freshly hand breaded onion rings.  This dinner will satisfy big appetites and we loved every bite.  We tried an entree of Filet-Mignon.  The large steak was grilled to perfection and wrapped with bacon.   Ragu smiled after trying a bite of the steak and devouring a plate of smelts.  Obviously the kitchen knows what they are doing, and it shows in each and every entree.  We upped the ante by trying a unique side of purple pickled eggs and beets.  It was pretty tasty!

What’s a Food Adventure Without Purple Pickled Eggs?

Our meals, menu sampling and Food Adventure was a complete success.  We love this place!  The staff and owners of the restaurant could not have been more attentive.  Good restaurant service is an art, and you will find assertive waitresses and waiters here.  Nick’s has a reputation for great food, and we discovered why they have such a loyal following.  When  you go Nick’s, it is obvious they take pride in what they bring to diner’s tables.  The variety is there, and the taste is there.  Can you think of another restaurant that has purple pickled eggs, beets AND smelts on their menu?  It is truly a unique eatery! Nick’s is another perfect example of why Food Adventures exists, and we are happy to shed light on this unbeaten stairway to taste heaven.   We were very impressed and now we understand why Nick’s website is gotonicks.com.  It is because you HAVE to go there !  It is American style pub food with a gourmet twist.  Trust us on this one, a jaunt down North Detroit Street is your ticket to a meal that will fill you up and have you raving.
