Head Out To The Greene County Fair

July 30, 2022 By Dayton937

The 183rd Greene County Fair begins its run Sunday, July 31, through Saturday, August 6, 2022, at the Greene County Fairgrounds, 120 Fairground Road. Xenia, OH.

“We’ve been waiting 365 days for this.” Said Kala Benton, one of the fair’s directors. “It is amazing when you think about it. Just a couple of weeks ago here at the Greene County Fairgrounds there wasn’t much activity and now the people, animals, food trailers, vendors and rides which move in soon, it looks a little like a scaled down version of Disneyland and we couldn’t have done any of it without our dedicated staff, directors’, and volunteers. A well-oiled machine.” Benton added.

The Greene County Fair is the oldest fair west of the Alleghenies. A nice mix of rides, games, food & entertainment await fairgoers.  Plus, the 4H tradition continues with proud young people showing their prize-winning animals.

FAIR HOURS

Our fair opens at 8am – and closes following that evening’s grandstand event.

Daily Gate Admission $8 (9 and under free with paying adult) Plus, parking is always FREE.

SUNDAY, JULY 31, OPENING DAY ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Rabbit showmanship and judging, English Horse Show & Showmanship, 4-H Show, Sheep Decorating Contest, with our opening ceremonies at the grandstands- 6pm.

Followed by the always fun kiddie calf scramble at 7pm, then the older kids get to try their best for their calf scramble. Folks if you’ve never experienced a calf scramble, you are in for some laughs. It’s a hoot. (Please do not attempt this at home.)

During the week we have a food drive event with a discount on admission for a non-perishable food item donation, family fun night with discounted ride wristbands, demo-derby, harness racing, truck and tractor pulls, great fair food, plus much more. (Please keep in mind our rides do not open until Monday, August 1.)

Due to rising fuel and general increased costs, the previous announced ride wrist bands price has increased to $20. But on Family Fun Day- August 3, wristbands are just $15 after 4pm. AGAIN WEDNESDAY ONLY, all other days of ride operations, bands are priced at $20.

On Wednesday, August 3, a special tribute will take place for the late Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer at 5pm. Sheriff Gene was a huge supporter of our fair and he and is wife would show up early and stay late.

Groundbreaking For New Montgomery County Fairgrounds

August 18, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

The Montgomery County Agricultural Society Board of Directors is pleased to announce the groundbreaking for the Montgomery County Fairgrounds & Event Center, Saturday, August 19, 2pm at Arthur O. Fisher Park in Jefferson Township. Located at 5661 Dayton-Liberty Road.

“It’s a new and exciting beginning.” said John Yancik, President of the Agricultural Society Board. “After wrapping up our 165th year at the original fairgrounds on South Main Street this past July, we look forward to the future with this wonderful new, year-round facility.”

The original fairgrounds property was purchased in a joint venture with Premier Health and the University of Dayton.

The new event center and fairgrounds will include several climate controlled buildings, and the repurposing of existing structures on the Arthur O. Fisher Park property that encompasses over 150 acres.

The park proudly bears the name of Judge Arthur O’Neill Fisher whose credentials include prosecutor, Tuskegee Airman and trailblazer.

“Our new facilities will not only host the Montgomery County Fair, but will also be available for weddings, receptions, meetings, events, get-togethers, retreats, offer camping and other amenities year- round.” Yancik added.

The next Montgomery County Fair will take place July 9-14, 2018 at the new location.

Fair-well to S. Main Street – Free Ticket Offer

July 8, 2017 By Dayton937 6 Comments

Montgomery County Fair opens this week

Next week will be the end of an era in Dayton.  The 165th Annual Montgomery County Fair will be historic, because it marks the last time the event will take place on 1043 South Main Street.

2017 is the last time the fair will be held here

For multiple generations, the Montgomery County Fairgrounds has hosted this event. That all ends next Saturday July 15th.   So one last time, smell the funnel cakes and listen to the kids on the ferris wheel at the corner of main street.   But cheer up, this is one heck of a place for a Food Adventure.  So… Corn Dog lovers unite, this is your type of festival.  Farmers, carnival rides and special events will fill an action packed week.

Here are some old facts for you foodie history buffs….

FIRST FAIR HOSTED IN 1874
After Dayton failed to win a bid for the Ohio State Fair, the City decided to put on their own fair.  Dubbed the “Southern Ohio Fair,” the event started September 29th, 1874 at the place we all know as the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds’ saw over 100,000 vistors that week.

Now for this year’s event ….

—What is this event?  Various local restaurants put their chili to the test and you vote for the winner!  Price includes all the beer, soft drinks, wine, hot dogs and chili you want!  Also try you luck at casino games located around the fairgrounds coliseum.  You want a Food Adventure for a good cause?  This charity event is just the ticket.

We love calling Dayton our hometown and we are grateful to be a part of these worthy charities.  The people involved and the organizations are first class.  Remember, life is an adventure (sometimes a Food Adventure), so please give back to the community and support these noble causes.

For our foodie friends who were expecting a typical Food Adventure article with succulent pics this week, we are throwing you a bone below with a photo of our waiter Julio bringing us a “Thurman Burger from the Thurman’ Cafe in Columbus.”    Make sure you check out the gallery below for various photos from the 3 charity events featured in this article.
