It’s Summer Restaurant Week

July 19, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Restaurant Week kicks off tonight and runs through Sun, July 26th.  That  means 3 course meal deals are available all over town.  This tradition, which started  in 2005 and happens twice a year, bases the cost of the meals on the year, so you’ll find restaurants will offer special menu’s at $20.20. Several years ago they added options for $25.20, or $30.20, some restaurants offer all three price points.  The Pandemic has certainly affected this semi-annual event, which usually kicks off with a Sneak Peek event, which didn’t happen this year.  At it’s peak, there have been over 50 restaurants that have participated, but it looks like this year will be a more limited selection.

The $20.20 – 35.20 prix-fixe meal doesn’t include beverages, tip or tax. Since your meal is discounted, this might be the best time to splurge on a bottle of wine or a top shelf bourbon. Because of the nature of this promotion, don’t expect to be able to substitute menu options, and for vegetarians and vegans, there are often not a lot of options.

Now the trickiest part about this week,  even though it kicks off on Sunday night, many of the businesses open reduced hours due to C19, so while the promotion kicks off tonight, you’ll see below we’ve listed those that are just opened limited nights.

Participating Restaurants:

Salar’s Seared Mahi served with a creamy tomato basil sauce, grilled asparagus and Yukon potato and leek puree.

It’s Restaurant Week Again!

July 22, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Twice a year, every January and July for one week Dayton restaurants put together a 3 course pre fixe meal deal as part of Miami Valley Restaurant Week.  In full disclosure, I created this event when I was the Board President of the local association.   We started recruiting for it in 2004 and we launched it in winter of 2005. The 3 course meal deal was offered by $20.05, to reflect the year and $1 of each meal was donated to a local charity and all participants were locally owned. At it’s peak we had about 60 restaurants participating.  Over the years it’s changed some, now offering  various price options: $20.18, $25.18, or $30.18 and chain restaurants are also taking part.

Now the trickiest part about this week,  even though it kicks off on Sunday night, many of the businesses are not open on Monday or Tuesday, so you’ll really want to make sure you’ve done your research on where to dine.  For the 40 participating eateries and menu’s check the MVRA website. Also please remember, many restaurants will be busier than usual, reservations are suggested and please be away that menu’s may change without notice.

Some of the restaurants who we suggest-  just based on their posted menus:

I can still remember trying to talk Wiley from Meadowlark into participating and her hesitation.  At the time she was located in the strip center on Miamisburg-Centerville Road and Wiley just didn’t think they could pull off the promotion.  Well she was wrong, she and her staff jumped into it with gusto, offering complimentary sparkling wine to guests while they were waiting and showing off the kind of hospitality that has made here business a hit.  Wiley got it!  Restaurant week is a marketing opportunity, to attract new guests and wow the regulars by sampling new dishes and testing potential new menu items.   It’s why reservations for Meadowlark are always a hot commodity during this promotion. As we’ve looked over the menu for this year, we appreciate that they’ve created a theme for the menu, always think about options for vegetarians  and even added a fourth course to the meal.
Here’s their menu:

It’s Restaurant Week in the Miami Valley

January 22, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Look back at the first restaurant week promotion!

I have a particular fondness for Restaurant Week, as it was my baby when I was president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association in 2005.  When we started it, it was a struggle to get restaurants to sign on.  The 3 course meal deal was offered by $20.05, to reflect the year.

The first year I think we had about a dozen restaurants when we kicked  off the promotion and we got up to 29 by the actual week of the promotion.   We asked the eateries to donate $1 of each meal to charity, a component that is not a part of most restaurant weeks around the country, but I really believed that this would help the public embrace this promotion.

Our first charity partner was The Food Bank with our slogan being “when you eat, they eat.” We strategically picked January, as that is one of the slowest months for restaurants and even though the restaurants signed up, many of them were skeptical about the event.  But the residents of the Miami Valley embraced the promo right away.   And then the restaurateurs started to believe, “I have never seen anything like it,” said Josef Reif, owner of l’Auberge, in Kettering. The phone started ringing last Friday and by noon Saturday all spaces in both dining rooms were reserved for the entire week.”  Then restaurant critic for the Dayton Daily News  Ann Heller interviewed local owners and one Oregon District eatery said  business tripled overnight.

Now a dozen years later, the promotion is still going strong and while the price goes up a penny each year, a 3 course meal for $20.17 is still a great deal. It originally ran just Sun – Friday, but now Restaurant Week runs Sunday – Sunday, Jan 22- 29th, giving you even more chances to dine out.   The program has changed a little as well, with restaurants now having the option to offer meals for $25.17, $30.17 and $35.17 as well and places like Park City Club and Roost offer options at all price points. Other eateries offer deals for 2 like Chappy’s Tap Room & Grille 2 dine for $35.17 offer or Kabuki’s sushi dinner for 2 for $35.17.  Some restaurants offer 4 courses like Wheat Penny and The Melting Pot.  Many more will pair beer and wine specials at discounted prices.

I tend to use restaurant week to visit newer restaurants and this year that includes Caramella’s Italian Kitchen, Ellie’s Restaurant and Bakery at Mills Park Hotel, Smiths Boathouse, Wandering Griffin and Zink’s Prime Meats and Fine Wines

You can view all the menus here.
The other thing to be aware of is that many of the restaurants participating are not open every day of restaurant week.  Be aware of the restaurant’s hours, some open days that aren’t usually open and some are closed on Sunday & Monday.

Here are our suggestions to get the most out of Restaurant Week:

1. Reserve Early

Popular Restaurant Week choices will be booked up quickly, so the sooner you get on the phone to make your reservations, the better. Reservations for dinner early in the week (Monday – Wednesday) tend to be easier to get than Friday and Saturday. Some of the more casual restaurants don’t take reservations, so arriving before or after the dinner rush will minimize your wait.

The options from elé Cake Co. Bistro & Wine Bar

2. Manage Your Expectations

It is Restaurant Week and most restaurants offer fairly limited choices on the Restaurant Week menu, so if you’re a very picky eater, it might not be the best option for you. Menu’s are predetermined for price, volume and ease of service, so don’t be surprised if substitutions aren’t possible. Frequently, the Restaurant Week menu won’t include a restaurant’s “signature” dishes, but you can often order them a la carte if you’d really like to give them a try. Some menu’s may actually differ from what’s listed here, due to product availability.

3. Understand the Price

The $20.17 – 35.17 prix-fixe meal doesn’t include beverages, tip or tax. Beverages can add up quickly, so if you’re concerned about your budget, ask about prices before you order. On the other hand, since your meal is discounted, this might be the best time to splurge on a bottle of wine. Many restaurants offer multiple price points options, so you can decide how much to spend.

4. Vegetarians Beware

Some of the menu’s don’t offer a lot of options for you, but you’re probably not surprised by that. On the other hand places like Christopher’s and Meadowlark always offer creative and tasty options.

Caribbean Chicken Tacos from El Meson

5. Tip Your Server Well

Just because you’re getting a discount on your dinner doesn’t mean that the waiter or waitress is getting a break on their rent this month, so tip generously if you get good service. And as a former waitress, let me remind you 20% is the baseline for good service these days.

And don’t worry if you can’t get to all the participating places, there’s always Summer Restaurant Week July 23 – 30th.

5 Tips For A Great Restaurant Week

January 23, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

dayton-restaurant-weekOriginally started in 2005 Restaurant Week has become a major event in Dayton Dining.  The original concept was a 3 course meal for a set price that related to the year, say $20.16 with $1 being donated to local charities.   Since I left the helm of the MVRA, the program has morphed and now includes multiple price points, chains restaurants and more casual eateries, which offer meals deals for two at various price points.  I’m not sure if they still do the $1 to charity, I could find no reference to that on the MVRA website or in the promotions for this years event. They have added a night, giving you more chances to sample some of the Miami Valley’s restaurants at a discount.  It kicks off Sun, Jan 24th and runs through Sun, Jan 31st.  Take some time and peruse the menu’s, some eateries offer 4 courses, some add beer or wine to the offering, and be aware of the restaurant’s hours, some are closed on Sunday & Monday.

The $20.16 – 35.16 prix-fixe meal doesn’t include beverages, tip or tax. Beverages can add up quickly,  so if you’re concerned about your budget, ask about prices before you order. On the other hand, since your meal is discounted, this might be the best time to splurge on a bottle of wine. Many restaurants offer multiple price points options, so you can decide how much to spend.  For the more budget challenged, check out the eateries offering to feed 2 for a set price, like Bunkers, Chappy’s, Hickory River Smokehouse and The Dublin Pub.

4.  Vegetarians  Beware

Some of the menu’s don’t offer a lot of options for you, but you’re probably not surprised by that.  On the other hand places like Christopher’s and Meadowlark always offer creative and tasty options.  The tilapia or mushroom options offered by many aren’t much of a restaurant week deal.

5. Tip Your Server Well

Just because you’re getting a discount on your dinner doesn’t mean that the waiter or waitress is getting a break on their rent this month, so tip generously if you get good service. And as a former waitress, let me remind you 20% is the baseline for good service these days.

Restaurant Week Extended at 30 Locations

February 2, 2014 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

rw08 It happened once before in 2009, when the weather was so bad that the turnout for restaurant week wasn’t what was expected, so they added a second week.  For years a handful of the  participating eateries have carried their dining deals over, so their regulars can enjoy without the crowds.  This winters frigid weather seems to have affected the early week of 3 course meal deals enough that 30 area dining establishments have committed to carry the $20.14, $25.14 and $30.14 specials for one more week.

Enjoy another week of Pre Fixe Meals at:

The Tastiest Week of the Summer is Back

July 28, 2013 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

Diners will once again get an opportunity to eat at some of the Miami Valley’s  best restaurants at affordable prices, while helping to support  local charity’s during Restaurant Week July 28 – Aug 4th. Looks like this time around there are about 50 restaurant to choose from, down about 10 from last summer’s promotion.    Restaurants will be offering multi-course prix fixe menus at either $20.13, $25.13 or $30.13.

DaytonDinings Tips:  Make reservations when possible

New this year, many restaurants seem to be offering multiple price points to choose from and guests can choose the menu they prefer.  You’ll find many of the menu’s  on the MVRA site.  Spinoza’s, Hickory River Smokehouse, McGullicutty’s  and Nick’s  are offering to feed a couple for $20.13.  The Caroline in Troy is including a glass of beer or wine, plus 3 courses with their options and Christopher’s options include 4 courses to choose from.

Expect crowds!

Many restaurants are closed on Sun &/or Monday- check first

Traditionally Restaurant Week has kicked off on Sunday and ended on Friday.  This summer’s promotion has been extended to run Sunday through Sunday.   And keep your eye out, several restaurants often carry over the dining deals for a second week.

No matter where you chose to dine, part of the package includes a donation to charity partners.  $1 of each meal will be split between  Cancer Support Community of Western Ohio and the MVRA scholarship fund.

While saving on your meal- splurge on wine to compliment your meal

Many people have a love/hate relationship with Restaurant Week.  Before I go any further, I should admit that I was the President of the Restaurant Association when this promotion was launched in 2005 and I am quite proud of the impact it’s had on our community.  But I also know folks that dine out regularly and yet avoid this week due to the crowds.  I also have a group of friends that can’t wait for the menu’s to be posted so they can plan their eating extravaganzas.

Restaurant staff also have mixed feelings about this promotion.  Most appreciate that they will be busy all week, but I’ve heard bartenders complain that while the servers and cooks are busy, that guests aren’t buying anything but the dining deal and therefore they don’t make much money.  As a former restaurateur, I know that those who embrace this promotion as a marketing opportunity are the ones that get the most from it. Owver/Chef Wiley at Meadowlark has been a great example from the very beginning.  She involved her staff, planned creative meals and promoted the menu’s ahead of time to her regular guests and even poured wine for waiting guests.

Menu offerings can change – be flexible

I too, have things I dislike about this week.  Like restaurants that sign up for the promotion, but don’t get buy in from their staff.  I’ve been to several places that print a special Restaurant Week menu on an insert and the guests get seated without the promo menu. Whether  intentional or an oversight, I’ve then heard guests questioning whether the restaurant is participating or that they don’t see the $20.13 meal.  Restaurants please don’t make it hard for guests to partake.  The MVRA also promotes a contest offering guests a chance to win gift certificates for filling out a comment card, but many restaurants don’t pass them out- so be sure and ask your server for yours and your meal deal can really pay off if you win!

If you do go out for these dining deals, please keep in mind that for many places, this is the busiest week of the year for them and that can mean longer waits, frazzled staff and sometimes running out of the advertised items.  Be patient and please remember to share the savings you got on your meal when you tip.  Happy dining!
