Registration is LIVE for 2019 Techstars Startup Week Dayton!

April 29, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

In its fourth year, this free, annual, week-long, entrepreneur-led, volunteer-run, community-focused conference brings together the region’s thinkers, dreamers, doers, makers & entrepreneurs in venues located across downtown Dayton. All experiences are welcome — whether a seasoned entrepreneur or new to the community, there is space to jump in.

“We’re excited to roll out our most community-driven conference yet,” Techstars Startup Week Dayton organizer John Owen said. “You asked and we responded — with new specialized tracks and evening sessions, there’s something for everyone.”

Last year, about 900 people attended 83 sessions & events featuring 88 unique speakers over the course of the week. This year, we’re on track to host more than 125 sessions featuring more than 100 speakers.

Base Camp this year will again be the Steam Plant, located at 617 E. 3rd St. in downtown Dayton.

The Steam Plant will host talks that appeal across industry lines — how-to sessions for entrepreneurs covering marketing, branding, legal business needs, sales & customers, funding & finance, and inspirational founder stories. Breakfast and lunch is provided each day, catered by Dayton food startups and businesses.

But this year, Startup Week will also feature industry-specific talks and workshops held in locations across downtown Dayton.

We put out a speaker call and tapped more than two dozen experts across the region to help organize these special tracks. As a result, food industry entrepreneurs will gather at Second Street Market on Monday afternoon, medtech entrepreneurs will gather at the 444 Innovation Hub on Wednesday, arts & music entrepreneurs will gather at The Brightside Music & Events Venue on Wednesday afternoon, defense entrepreneurs will gather at the 444 Innovation Hub on Thursday, and more.

Friday, June 7, will be the conference’s first community day as businesses along Third Street and Wayne Avenue open their doors to host workshops on niche topics including co-op opportunities, solopreneurship, retail options, social entrepreneurship, founder wellness and leadership.

Can’t get a day off? Techstars Dayton Startup Week has also added evening workshops this year. Topics range from building your business plan to paying yourself in these later workshops, held at Dayton Metro Library and The Brightside.

And don’t forget, Startup Week is all about connecting — our evening social events range from community pitch nights to happy hours to a startup market that will feature products, food and music from our city’s entrepreneurs! We’ll close the week on Friday with a business crawl through Dayton’s Oregon District, with built-in stops to help you build your own picnic basket for Friday night’s free concert at Levitt Pavilion.

Don’t want to wait until Monday, June 3 to start connecting? Catch the 2nd Annual Gem City Entrepreneur Resource Fair, Friday, May 31 from 5:30-8pm at Central State Dayton West, 840 Germantown St.

In December of 2017, eight Dayton young black professionals hosted the first resource fair, described as “one of the most successful community-wide resource/networking events for millennial and minority entrepreneurs,” organizer Ke Daniels said. This year, the resource fair will kick off Techstars Startup Week Dayton 2019!

Techstars Startup Week Dayton 2019 is made possible through support from title sponsors The Entrepreneurs Center and Wright State Research Institute and official media sponsor, Cox Media Group.

Make plans now to attend!

City Celebrates Arcade Financial Closing

April 25, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

The long-awaited financial closure by developers of the Dayton Arcade is complete.

Earlier this month, Dayton City Commissioners voted on a variety of legislation, property tax incentives and energy improvements to prepare for the $90 million financial closing of the first phase of the Arcade project.

The financing structure is being called one of the largest and most complicated deals of its kind and represents a number of firsts for Dayton and the region. Included in the financing is $10 million of support from the City of Dayton, the City’s largest economic investment since the construction of the Schuster Center in the early 2000’s.

In addition to City support, the financing package includes new market tax credits, federal and state historic tax credits, low income housing tax credits, Property Assessed Clean Energy financing, and private equity.

“I am excited to see all of the pieces of this deal come together,” said City Manager Shelley Dickstein. “When complete, the Arcade will not only spur development downtown but act as an innovation hub connecting city neighborhoods with needed programming and opportunity.”

Nearly five years ago, Mayor Nan Whaley commissioned a task force to determine the future of the iconic site. Since then, City staff, community leaders and advocates have worked tirelessly to make the project a reality.

“For decades the Dayton Arcade served as the heart and soul of the City,” said Mayor Nan Whaley. “I am excited to see how the revival of this space will impact the entire Dayton community.  The Arcade project is a great example of how a public-private partnership can move our city forward.”

The Arcade Innovation Hub, a joint venture between the University of Dayton and The Entrepreneurs Center, represents the university’s largest investment in downtown in its history. The hub will bring hundreds of students and entrepreneurs to Dayton’s urban core.

Also in this first phase of Arcade redevelopment will be 126 units of affordable and market-rate housing targeted to the region’s arts and creative community.

The City of Dayton will recognize partners and the people who made the project possible at a private celebration next week.

2019 Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame Inductees Announced

April 24, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Three individuals and one performing arts organization will join the Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame at the 2019 induction ceremony in September, Wright Dunbar, Inc. officials announced Wednesday, April 24.
They are Jessie Gooding, John Gower, Betsy and Lee Whitney and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.
“We have another year of outstanding inductees.  They are all excellent examples of the exceptional people who make this area a great place to live and raise a family,” said Harry Seifert, president and CEO of Wright Dunbar, Inc.
This year’s inductees will be honored at a luncheon at Sinclair  College on Thursday, Sept. 26th.  Tickets and sponsorships for this event are available online.
Jessie Gooding (1926-)
One of the Dayton region’s foremost civil rights leaders, Jessie Gooding was born and raised in Minden, La. After serving in the segregated U. S. Army, he studied at Wilberforce University and became a chemist at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Witnessing—and experiencing—discrimination in the workplace, Gooding established equal employment opportunity and sensitivity training, which became mandatory in the Air Force in the 1960s. He also advocated for the Air Force to recruit top science and engineering students from historically black colleges and universities. Gooding is the longest serving president of the Dayton chapter of the NAACP (1982-2002.) Under his leadership the Dayton NAACP increased voter registration and pressed for reforms to end discrimination in education, employment, housing and law enforcement. He is co-author with Rosalind Vera Osinubi of Freedom and Justice for All: My Life and Dayton Civil Rights History.
John Gower (1953-)
John Gower is a life-long Dayton resident who has devoted his career as an urban planner to preserving Dayton’s history and making it a more enjoyable place to live. His advocacy for Dayton began as a student at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, when he volunteered weekends in Dayton to board up abandoned homes in his Dayton View neighborhood. He has worked as Dayton’s downtown planner, director of community development, urban design coordinator, and most recently as reimaging strategist. The Living City Project he led has been called a catalyst for revitalizing downtown housing. He led architectural preservation efforts that resulted in the city’s Historic District Zoning and Landmarks Commission. His preservation advocacy continues even in retirement, and he has been a leading advocate for restoring the downtown Dayton Arcade.
Betsy and Lee Whitney (1930-, 1930-2018)
Betsy and Lee Whitney have been exemplary leaders in arts, social services, history and business organizations. Born in Yellow Springs, Betsy Baldwin  met Leon “Lee” Whitney in college at Ohio Wesleyan. They married in 1953. Lee joined his father-in-law’s insurance company, which grew to become Baldwin and Whitney with Lee Whitney as president. The Whitneys have been generous with their talents and resources.  A past president and board chair of the YWCA, Betsy served on boards and/or fundraising committees for the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Dayton Visual Arts Center, Human Race Theater Company, Victoria Theatre Association, Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, Dayton History, Leadership Dayton, Dayton Foundation and Wright-Dunbar Inc. Lee served as president of Dayton Children’s, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Downtown Dayton Partnership and the YMCA, and as a board member of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, United Theological Seminary, and Westminster Church. Through his countless volunteer hours at Carillon Historical Park. He saw the need for a picnic shelter for schoolchildren. The Whitney Pavilion there now proudly serves visitors of all ages. Both Whitneys served on additional nonprofit boards and committees too numerous to list here.
Dayton Contemporary Dance Company
Nationally and internationally acclaimed local group on the dance stage and in film, DCDC has been a recognized cultural amenity in the Dayton arts scene for over 50 years. Few individuals or arts organizations in the region have represented Dayton on a larger scale. DCDC represents the Dayton region around the world. In this decade it has toured in Chili, China, Russia and Kazakhstan. PBS featured DCDC in the 2007 documentary “Dance in America: Dancing in the Light.” The film documentary “Sparkle,” which featured DCDC dancer Sheri “Sparkle Williams,” was selected to screen at Silverdocs, America’s largest and most prestigious documentary film festival in 2012. DCDC won the prestigious 2016 “Bessie” Award for Outstanding Revival for its performance of “Rainbow ‘Round my Shoulder” at the David H. Koch Theater in New York. DCDC was founded by Jeraldyne Blunden (1940-1999,) who was inducted in the Walk of Fame as an individual in 1999.
About the Walk of Fame and Wright Dunbar, Inc.
Since its inception in 1996 as a part of the City of Dayton’s bicentennial celebration, the Dayton Region’s Walk of Fame has recognized individuals and groups for their outstanding and enduring personal or professional contributions to the community, nation and the world. The Walk of Fame honors them by setting memorial stones in the sidewalks of Dayton’s historic Wright-Dunbar District. The stones can be enjoyed year-round on West Third Street between Broadway and Shannon and on North and South Williams Streets.
Wright Dunbar, Inc. a private non-profit organization, serves as a catalyst for economic development on West Third Street and manages the Walk of Fame as part of its mission in Dayton’s historic West Third Street Corridor in the neighborhood of Wilbur and Orville Wright and Paul Laurence Dunbar.

High energy bluegrass is on the bill at The Brightside

April 23, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Chain Station is in town from Denver on Wed April 24th, performing their high energy string music at The Brightside in downtown Dayton.

There is a strong tradition of bluegrass and traditional mountain music in the Dayton area. That tradition is celebrated this week with two talented and high energy string bands: Chain Station, from Denver, Colorado, and Red Sun Pasta, which features members of Yellow Spring’s own Blue Moon Soup. If you’re a bluegrass, mountain or Americana music fan – don’t miss this special performance at Dayton’s newest music venue, The Brightside, on Wednesday April 24th from 8-11pm.

Chain Station is a 4-piece, get ‘em out on the dance floor string band, known for winning over crowds with creative, fun original songs. Their music is well-steeped in Americana roots, with vocal harmonies that are high, lonesome, and tight. They are a bluegrass band that would satisfy a picky old-timer and delight fans of newgrass, a delicate balance indeed.

The band is on the road promoting their highly anticipated new album “Backroads” which will be released May 3, 2019. You may have seen them on the road supporting acts such as The Del McCoury Band, The Devil Makes Three, Todd Snider, Sierra Hull, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Fruition, Trout Steak Revival, The Railsplitters, Lil’ Smokies, Hot Buttered Rum, and many more

They are supported locally by members of Blue Moon Soup, who are performing as a smaller group under the moniker Red Sun Pasta. These talented local musicians are known for their eclectic mix of jam band staples, folk and bluegrass traditionals. On stage, trail-side or fireside, the music brings a sincerity and spirit to the stage that sweeps wallflowers onto the dance floor. After a Blue Moon Soup show, they hope your feet are tired and your ears yearn for more!

You can experience both of these musically talented performers on Wednesday April 24th at The Brightside (details below).
