Wanted: Entrepreneurs To Open Retail Shops Downtown

March 22, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Activated Spaces, an initiative to fill downtown storefronts, is accepting applications for short-term retail and service businesses to open downtown this spring as part of the thirteenth phase of its Pop-Up Shop Project. The project matches business owners and entrepreneurs with downtown property owners who have first-floor storefront space available for occupancy.

Interested retailers should fill out an application, which can be filled out online at www.activatedspaces.org, or downloaded and emailed to Jen Cadieux at [email protected]. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, April 20. Tenants will be notified May 4, and retailers must be ready to open in June.

Lease lengths will range from three to six months. The spaces will have varying lease rates, but will be leased below market value. Activated Spaces volunteers will connect retailers with commercial property owners, help make the space move-in ready, and promote the business during such events as First Friday and DP&L Summer in the City. Selected businesses will negotiate leasing terms directly with the selected property owner, but flexibility for the tenant is a priority.

Activated Spaces volunteers are building on the success of the Pop-Up Project’s previous phases. Eleven of the businesses that have opened as part of the Pop-Up Project are still open: Beaute Box, 20 W. Monument Ave; Peace on Fifth, 234 Dutoit St.; Vintage Barbershop, 110 W. Fifth St.; Spice Paradise, 16 Brown St.; Hicks’ Barber Shop, 16 Brown St.;  Twist Cupcakery, 25 S. St. Clair St.; Mitosis, 14 W. 1stSt. Suite 302; Baker Salvage Co, 31 S. St. Clair St.; Buckeye Laptop, 133 N. Ludlow; and Soccer Shots, 39 S. St. Clair St. Former pop-up shops Beaute Box and Catapult Creative have moved from their original pop-up shop locations to larger spaces. Since the inception of the project in 2011, more than 25,000 square feet of previously vacant space has been occupied and 41 new jobs have been created.

Two of the Pop-Up Shop alumni, Beaute Box and Spice Paradise, will host their own grand re-opening events during April’s First Friday. Spice Paradise will celebrate its return to 16 Brown St. after being displaced for several months from a fire in the building. Beaute Box has expanded and is throwing an open-house party at the salon’s new location at 20 W. Monument Ave. Both events take place on Friday, April 6.

Commercial property owners interested in offering space to Pop-Up owners should contact Jen Cadieux at 937-224-1518. Once a match is made, a small stipend is available to be distributed at the discretion of the Activated Spaces team to each of the businesses each month for the first three months to assist in off-setting startup costs.

The Pop-Up Project is driven by volunteers from the young professional organizations UpDayton and Generation Dayton with support from the Downtown Dayton Partnership, and community volunteers. Activated Spaces is part of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan, a strategic blueprint for the future of downtown.

Those interested in volunteering with Activated Spaces should e-mail [email protected].

Vanessa Rubin Performs Free Jazz Concert

March 21, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity, warmth and sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father.

At 7pm on Saturday, March 24th  a short interview will be conducted by Fenton Sparks to help you get to know Vanessa a bit better. The free concert will start at 7:30 pm.

Her career began as a young woman in 1980 singing in small clubs in Cleveland, Ohio performing with musicians such as Wynn Bibbs, Skip Gibson, saxophonist and arranger Willie Smith, Neal Creque, Matthew “Chink” Stevenson.  It did not take her long to make the big trip to New York where she joined up with other jazz musicians like Pharaoh Sanders, Frank Foster and Cecil Bridgewater and Barry Harris. Her first recording contract was with Novus/RCA Records making five albums in three years. “Full Circle” (Creative Perspective Music – 2013) is her most recent recording and is a joint project with saxophonist Don Braden, both of whom are from the Midwest and share a deep appreciation for the Hammond B3.

Vanessa will be performing with an Ohio based trio: Dreve Ivy on piano, Peter Dominguez on bass and Reggie Jackson will to return to the Hayner on drums. In Vanessa’s own words: “I will say they are all fine musicians and wonderful human beings.  Drene is a Cleveland native, an accomplished pianist, accompanist, music instructor and Minister of Music at his place of worship. Peter is the Bass Chair at Oberlin College and is one of the best kept secrets on acoustic bass in the country.  After 30 years in NY and playing with only the best, I am delighted to discover him right here under my nose in Ohio. Reggie, from Columbus, is no stranger to the center as he has played there previously with Bobby Floyd, whom he plays with regularly and has toured extensively with Grammy Winner Dianne Sure.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is proudly supported by the citizens of the Troy City School District through a local tax levy and generous gifts to the Friends of Hayner. For more information regarding these free events and to receive a complete listing of events taking place at the Hayner Center, please call 339-0457 or visit our website at www.TroyHayner.org for complete details

Kettering Restaurant Makes Environmentally Friendly Changes

March 14, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Disposal serviceware is an ominous issue for the restaurant industry and providing convenient carry-out options while reducing waste is a challenge. Christopher’s Restaurant in Kettering made the switch to compostable straws a few months ago and has recently taken another step toward more sustainable operations by switching to compostable versions of all carry out containers and nearly all disposal amenities in-house. These products are sourced from local distributors such as Bio-Green-Choice and go beyond the designation of biodegradable with a compostable certification.

The ownership said they believe that investing in this ware is important for several reasons. First, many customers have taken up the practice of composting at home and will now have the option of composting disposable items from Christopher’s. These items also present less impact to the natural environment if accidentally introduced. Containers made from plant based materials will decompose quickly compared to plastic, styrofoam and waxed alternatives. Finally, supporting the compostable product industry is important to ensure that our industry moves in this direction, and creates demand and financial feasibility for larger scale composting efforts in the future.

Christopher’s say they will continue to look at all potential options to reduce waste and make changes where possible. They  encourage any other restaurants looking to do the same to contact them for more information.

Visit Christophers at 218 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering  Monday through Saturday from 7:30am – 9pm.

March 13, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The Fall 2017 grand opening of the 1,400 square foot Edward A. Dixon Gallery located in Downtown Dayton featured very few artists from the Dayton area and consisted mainly of national and international artwork collected by the gallery’s owner. Since the opening, Dixon has worked to increase his representation of Miami Valley artists and there have been as many as four different local artists with artwork exhibiting in the gallery at the same time.

One of the latest local additions to the gallery comes from artist Janet Garlikov who’s beautiful, large scale LACE ON STEEL pieces can even be viewed by downtown pedestrians through the gallery’s large front windows.

Janet Garlikov – LACE ON STEEL – ($2,500.00 for each piece of 40″ x 40″ original Fine Art)

Other artwork exhibiting at the gallery include pieces from multi-talented artist Marilynn Page whose beautiful watercolor portraits and geometric paintings adorn its own section of the gallery, a steel sculpture piece by Jay Favorite, abstract oil-based paintings from Mikee Huber and acrylic and oil portraits from Marcellus Art.

Detail from Marilynn Page artwork inspired by Austrailian Aborigines. Several paintings in the series available now at the gallery.

Marcellus Art.

Owner, Ed Dixon, says “I am also working on a program to feature more emerging artists on a short term basis to give as many area artists an opportunity for exposure and recognition as possible.” Mr. Dixon also indicated there will be a Call For Art announcement in the Spring which local artists will be encouraged to participate.

The Edward A. Dixon Gallery is located at 12 South Ludlow Street, Dayton, OH 45402. Current hours are 4pm-8pm on Friday and 12pm-4pm on Saturday. Appointments can be scheduled throughout the week. Playhouse South Moving South

March 8, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Playhouse South Community Theatre has just  announced that they will be moving their program to Springboro!

Tentatively in Spring of 2019, Playhouse South will be located in a permanent home in Springboro to help fulfill the need for more performing arts in the area. They have been closely working with  City Manager, Chris Pozzuto to better our relationship with the city.

With this being said, Rock of Ages, which performs in May, will be the last show in their current location. Their first and last show of the 2018-2019 season will be School House Rock Live! in Springboro at North Park. From then, until their new home is available, they will be taking the time to revamp their program. Their board and members agree that this is the perfect opportunity to properly prepare for the future of Playhouse South.

Why pause the Playhouse South program until you have moved into the new home in Springboro?

– Our members and board have decided that until our permanent space is ready, we would like to take this time to address everything our program has to offer. We’re looking at ways to grow, improve, and organize our entire program in a way that will better accommodate our new city and space.

Where will everything be stored while the move is taking place?

– Springboro has generously offered us a temporary space where we can store all our costumes, props, furniture, lumber, etc. Also, they have provided us with proper accommodations to prepare for School House Rock Live!

Are you announcing a 2018-2019 season?

– Rock of Ages, going up in May, will be our last show in our current space in Kettering. We will begin moving from this space as soon as the show closes. School House Rock Live!, performed at North Park in Springboro, will be our first and only 2018-2019 season show.

What does the new space look like?

– We cannot share many details about our new space. Nothing is set in stone as of yet, and many changes could still take place between now and the finalization of the project. We can confidently say that we have worked with the Springboro City Manager, Chris Pozzuto, to work from a “Wish List” of things that we would like our theater to include, and just about everything on that list will be worked into the space. Once everything is finalized, we will go public with more details.

Ohio has a new Poetry Out Loud (POL) state champion.

March 6, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Caroline Delaney, a senior at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton, won Ohio’s 13th annual  POLState Finals held on March 3 at the King Arts Complex in Columbus, Ohio.

Delaney recited “Plaint in a Major Key” by Jorge Sanchez, “The American Soldier” by Philip Freneau, and “Planetarium” by Adrienne Rich.

“I found ‘Planetarium,’ and that poem … is about Caroline Herschel, who was an astronomer. Every word and every line in the poem is a reference to something about her or astronomy,” said Delaney, who plans to attend Miami University to study neuroscience on a pre-med track. “(The poem) is just really interesting and it captured my attention and it was something I could really see myself doing.”

Eleven Ohio finalists competed at the State Finals for the title of state champion following their participation in one of six regional semifinal events held throughout the state in February.

“Now in its 13th year, Ohio’s POL program once again joins with high school students and their teachers, state arts agencies, and the National Endowment for the Arts nationwide to celebrate poetry in all its forms. We know this program provides a high level of engagement for students and is one more opportunity for them to be immersed in arts education,” said Ohio Arts Council Executive Director Donna S. Collins. “We are thrilled with the commitment by Ohio’s students to POL and congratulate all who participated at the local, regional, and state levels. We now have the honor of cheering Caroline all the way to Washington, D.C., as she represents Ohio at the National Finals in April.”

As the state champion, Delaney earned a $300 prize and an all-expense-paid trip to the 2018 National Finals, held April 23-25. The national competition will feature students from every state as well as Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Washington, D.C. The total award pool is $50,000, including a $20,000 top prize for the national champion.

Delaney said she is excited to compete in the nation’s capital.

“I am just looking forward to being able to say that I represent my state and having all these people behind me,” she said. “I would like to thank my mother and my father. They’ve signed me up for acting classes, they’ve sat me down at the foot of the bed and made me recite until my brain hurt ….They’ve made sure I knew what I was doing and was confident in my own ability.”

Thanks to Delaney’s success at the State Finals, the Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School library will receive $500 to purchase poetry books.

Anna Kahle, a sophomore at Lima Central Catholic High School, earned second place at the State Finals. She received a $200 prize, as well as $200 for her school library.

Magnus Saebo, a senior at Upper Arlington High School who placed third in the competition, received a $100 prize and $100 for his school library.

All three state finalists received a framed original print created by Dayton artist Patrick Mauk. The print incorporated lines from the poem “River on Fire” by Ohio Poet Laureate Dave Lucas. Lucas, an instructor at Case Western Reserve University and author of Weather, recited three poems for the audience during State Finals.

Former State Senator Eric H. Kearney of Cincinnati, who sponsored and secured passage of legislation creating the position of Ohio Poet Laureate, emceed the event.

Delaney, who first participated in POL as a freshman, said she hopes to share her passion for poetry with her peers by emphasizing its prevalence in everyday life.

“Poetry isn’t something that a lot of kids these days really care about, but what they don’t really understand is … everybody loves music, but music is poetry and vice versa. We all have poetry in our life that we love and enjoy,” she said. “Overall, Poetry Out Loud has taught me that there is always something you can learn and that every word you say has a meaning to it. You just have to find it and convey it.”
