A New East Side Eatery!

July 11, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s a new joint in town for taco’s and ice cream.  Husain and wife Angelica opened La Monarca Tacos and Ice Cream on Linden Ave, just south of 5th Street about six weeks ago. Angelica, who is originally from Mexico handles the cooking, while Husain runs the front of the house.

Husain said they opened the eatery there on the East side because there were very few places in the neighborhood and he wanted a place kids go go and get a treat.

For a little shop, they have an extensive menu which includes  quesadilla’s, nachos, tacos, tortas, burritos, a burger, chicken tenders, and wings. On the weekends they offer Menudo, a traditional Mexican soup, made with cow’s stomach. They even have a Birria Pizza.

On the sweets side they offer 24 flavors of ice cream in cones and cups, even a churos split!

They also make shakes, chocolate covered banana’s, agua fresca, crepes and more!

Most of their business is take out, though they do have 3 small tables if you’d like to dine in.  Go visit them and tell them DaytonDining sent you!

Celebrate The Root Beer Stande’s 15th Anniversary This Tuesday!

July 9, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Emily Collins, the proprietor of The Root Beer Stande on Woodman is celebrating her 15th anniversary of owning the business this Tuesday, July 11th.   In sharing her story about acquiring the business she she told us she graduated from Stivers School for the Arts, left Dayton to attend Ohio University, where she received a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree.  Upon graduation she returned to Dayton and struggled to find a job where she could use her degree. So she taught part time and worked in the food industry, as she had through high school and college.  Her dad, who ran Klosterman Bakery  came home one day told her the stand was for sale. Always wanting to own her own business, Emily decided she’d buy the place. So she went to the bank and says they looked at her like she was a crazy 24 year old, but suggested she put a business plan together.

It took her almost a year working with the SBA and in 2008 she actually bought the business from Alex Fabrick. What she didn’t realize is that the business was in bad shape.  So she started making repairs as she could and marketing the Stande to attract new business.  She upgraded the menu, expanding from just hot doge fries and onion rings. She added Hank’s Hearty Burgers Made with Love, Hand-pattied 1/4 pound Angus burger including her favorite, the mushroom swiss burger.

She told us they currently sell about 800 hotdogs a week, with the Foot Long being their #1 seller, followed closely by The Dirty D- a Bacon wrapped, deep fried dog, smothered with chili, mustard, onions and cheese. They also have a pizza menu and added the Sno Shack a couple of years ago.

As part of the 15th anniversary celebration they will have  footlongs dogs buy one; get one for $1.15 on Tuesday July 11. They are also running their Hank’s burgers and Dogs on special. They will be $5.15 that day.
You can also pick up a free koozie while you’re there!

They will be doing a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to the breast cancer foundation. They will have some raffle prizes available as well. Emily invites everyone to come celebrate on July 11th, noting “we wouldn’t have made it this long without you!” She also credits her employees for helping her business succeed.  She says she still has many of the same ones she hired 15 years that were in their teens then and now are mother’s working part time. During COVID she made the decision to keep the business open year round, so she could keep her staff employed, added Door Dash and watched their carryout business increase, for which she’s grateful.

On their facebook pages she’s requested guests  share photos and family memories.

When Emily does have down time, she loves to support other locally owned businesses like The Pine Club, Jimmy’s Italian Kitchen and Taqueria Mixteca.  She plays tennis, hangs with her dog Ziggy and recently bout a ski boat, which she hopes to take out a bunch this summer.

Local Bottle Shop Gets National Shout Out

July 4, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

The increasing growth of non-alcoholic beverage trends across the U.S. is being reflected in sales figures. Between August 2021 and August 2022, total dollar sales of non-alcoholic drinks in the US stood at $395 million, showing a year-on-year growth of +20.6%.

The Wine Enthusiast recently released an article “The Best Non-Alcoholic Bottle Shops in America, According to the Pros.” Listing the best, divided by six regions, in the Great Lakes Region, Dayton’s The Bottle Shop by Ghostlight made the list.

Here’s their write up:

What do you get when you combine a bottle shop with a coffee shop? Happy customers.

“Bottle Shop by Ghostlight packs a one-two punch: a non-alcoholic bottle shop on one side, and a café on the other side,” says Molly Flynn, a non-alcoholic home bartender and content creator. “The cafe is cozy, chic, welcoming and goes a step beyond the norm by offering craft NA cocktails in addition to the usual coffee beverages.”

Flynn says the shop is small but mighty, boasting a selection of NA whiskey, mezcal, amaro, gin, wine, bitters, canned cocktails and mixers, along with botanical distillates and other non-analogue spirits. “I especially appreciated the station where you could build your own mix-n-match six pack of [NA] beer,” she says.

Owner, Shane Anderson told us, “We are humbled and honored to be acknowledged by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as one of the leading purveyors of non-alcoholic beer, wine, and spirits in the nation. Their recognition not only celebrates our passion for curating a unique collection but also highlights the increasing popularity and sophistication of alcohol-free alternatives. We raise a toast to Wine Enthusiast for spotlighting the exciting possibilities and expanding horizons in the realm of beverage enjoyment.”

Update: The opening date has been pushed back at least a week- stay tuned for more info when we hear from them!
EST! EST!! EST!!! has set an opening date for their restaurant located at The Arcade.  According to their website July 13th is when they will make their Dayton debut. This modern Italian eatery will feature brick oven pizza, handmade pasta, gelato and more. The restaurant at the corner of Fourth and Ludlow will have an intimate feel with exterior and interior patio dining.

Their name comes from the story of a German Bishop who sent his servant ahead to taste the wines along his route of travel, leaving messages on the walls of inns and taverns to tell his master whether he should drink the wine or avoid it. “Est” (it is) meant the wine was good, while “Non est” (it isn’t) told the Bishop to move on. It is clear that the servant saw considerable virtue in the wines of Montefiascone, as indicated by his “Est! Est! Est!!! scrawled on the wall

A peek at the menu:

They will also be doing Sunday brunch from noon to 4pm. The Prosciutto Benedict pictured below looks pretty tasty. Shrimp and polenta, french toast, avocado toast, breakfast panini, and brunch tagliere also appear on te

Epic Tacos Now Available in Centerville

June 28, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

After much anticipation, the new Centerville Agave and Rye opens the doors to their 16th restaurant  today.   As general manager Charity Walls says, “We make epic tacos here at Agave and Rye, all of our food is made 100% from scratch, fresh daily. We also fresh squeeze our margaritas every day so they are the perfect taste. We provide an escape-ism for your every day life, you can come in here and forget what your worries are for the day, enjoy some tacos and some epic margaritas.”

The decor is best described as  “urban grunge” and the background music wafting through the place is an eclectic mix of music that spans everything from 80’s pop  to current hits of today.

Beyond the eye-catching space and EPIC experience, the menu delivers with an eclectic array of choices. You can start your meal by selecting  from six dips to go with your chips, or from the munchies section of the menu. I highly recommend the Elote which is Cotija Cheese, Serrano Aioli, Tajin, Cilantro and Lime.

The Sweet Corn Fritters are another great starter.

When it comes to tacos, they are indeed epic and each one is double shelled with a crunchy corn shell surrounded by a soft flour tortilla. With about 15 options, I chose (pictured from left to right below) The Plain Jane -Seasoned Ground Beef, Shredded Lettuce, Aged White Cheddar, Diced Tomato, Sour Cream,  The Beekeeper  – Herbed Chicken, Matchstick Green Apple Slaw, Strawberry Jalapeño Tequila Salsa and The Alderman – Carne Asada Steak, Street Corn Salad, Cotija Cheese, Spicy Chile de Arbol Salsa. Gotta tell you- I couldn’t finish the three of these- they are stuffed so full.

Not a taco fan?  The menu does offer a burger, chopped salad, taquitos and a couple of burrito options. There are also half a dozen grilled taco options.

But I did manage to save a little room for dessert and I gotta tell you The Salty Pimp Epic Tacos – Dulce de Leche, Salty Caramel Ice Cream Draped with Spicy Chocolate, Cinnamon & Sugar Shell, Party Pearls  were mind blowing! A serving includes two, so you can share.

Looking for a good cocktail to compliment your tacos- I suggest the Strawberry Bombshell -Bacardi Rum, Vodka, Fresh-Squeezed Lemonade, Strawberry Purée, Cream of Coconut, or as the staff refers to it Danger Juice. It goes down so easily, without a boozy taste.

Be prepared to wait, as Agave & Rye does not take reservations, and we know that the crowds are coming. The restaurant seats about 200 inside and another 80 or so on the patio.

Treat Yourself to Chauffeured Fine Dining in Versailles

June 28, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

I was lucky enough to be a part of the inaugural trip of the  Hotel Versailles AmuseBUS roundtrip experience for a dinner reservation at Silas Creative Kitchen + Cocktails. Every Thursday through August 31, you can ride the  luxury Mercedes-Benz Executive Shuttle, enjoy pre-dinner welcome drinks of their housemade wine and spirits, while they whisk you away to the rural setting of this boutique hotel and restaurant.

As many of you may remember the 150 year old hotel was destroyed by a fire in 2019, but they have rebuilt and expanded the property that is sophisticated and surprising, friendly and fancy, modern and memorable. As you enter the building you are greeted in a small lobby and then proceed to the bar\dining room that runs the entire length of the property.  It’s bright and airy with an array of booth and table seating. The dining room seats 68, with a a private dining room for 12 and and another 50 or so patio tables are available for al fresco dining.

Chef Aaron Allen

As we sat down we were greeted by Executive Chef Aaron Allen, who trained under Chef Anne Kearney for five years at Dayton’s Rue Dumaine.  You could hear the passion in his voice as he described how he crafts the menu using  seasonally available ingredients that are sourced directly from the property’s 85 acre Sycamore Bridge Farm, with meats supplied through local partnerships with Winner’s Quality Meats and King’s Poultry Farm.  In the menu you’ll even find a list of all the local purveyors used by the restaurant.
⁣

I shared a meal with 4 others and we decided to dine family style, ordering many dishes but sharing them all so we could taste as many items as possible. We started out with a homemade bread plate which came with an assortment of focaccia, corn bread and milk bread served with butter  and lava salt, all made in house by their pastry chef.

We also enjoyed a charcuterie tower which included an  assortment of house-cured meats, pickles, preserves, bread, and Ohio artisan cheeses. We all agreed that the charred carrot salad with pickled beets, salted pistachios, arugula chevre and coffee crumbs was a table favorite.

Other hits of the night included the roasted pork belly bao buns, the chicken schnitzel, the waygu short ribs, the pan seared scallops and a spice rubbed NY strip steak.

My personal highlight of the meal  was the herb crusted elk loin with English pea butter, wild mushrooms, white asparagus, whipped chevre, citrus, cherry jus. It truly melted in my mouth, and was not gamey at all like I thought elk might be.  Chef explained he sous vide’s it until tender and finishes it on the grill for just a few minutes to create that texture.

And no meal is complete without desserts, and we enjoyed tiramisu, a lemon posset with a blueberry and rhubarb granita and lemon shortbread, their version of an ice cream sandwich and a frozen peanut butter trifle, pictured below.

After dinner we headed to the bar where the signature cocktails was filled with options, many of which were derived from the history of Versailles and  highlighted the local distilleries. I chose to end my night with a  bourbon experience.

After a fantastic evening of great food, drink and hospitality I took advantage of the Ohio Staycation package to reserve an overnight stay and return chauffeur service the next morning. Reservations for the experience can be made by calling the hotel concierge at 937.526.3020.

For those wondering, the average check for dining at dinner runs about $75.

Slap’N Lizard Tap House Opens June 28th!

June 27, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

West Carrollton is the home to a brand new beer hall, featuring a wall of 50 taps, which will open this Wednesday, June 28th. The Slap’n Lizard, allows guests to pour their own beer, sampling just a small sip or a full pint glass.  All beer is priced by the ounce.

Owner Michelle Kennedy and her husband Joe were living in Asheville, North Carolina after his retirement from the military and started exploring the exploding craft brewery scene there.  Joe began doing some home brewing and they talked about opening a brewery someday.

They moved back to the Dayton area, where they both are originally from and kept thinking about opening a business. They decided a self-pour tap house made more sense for them than a brewery. In brainstorming names for the business, they talked about a mural they had on the wall of their patio in North Carolina that had 3 lizards that looked they were walking up a wall and high fiving each other, and that helped them coin Slap’n Lizard.

Michelle explained the process for guests, upon entering they’ll check in at the front desk by providing your I.D. and a credit card to start your tab. You will then receive a card to unlock the taps, that allows them to access the 50 taps and pour their own beverages. When your ready to leave, just return the tap card you were issued  the front desk and our staff will close your tab and provide you with an itemized receipt.

Each card has a 32 ounce limit, which helps the bar to not over serve their guests. If a guest uses all 32 ounces, they can check in with a tap tender and if they see they are handling their liquor well, they can add additional ounces to the card. They currently have 40 craft beers, ciders and seltzer on tap, along with 6 domestic beer and 4 wines(2 White 2 Red). Each tap handle shows your the ABV, IBU’s and cost of the beverage:

Munchies like pretzels and cheese and chips will be available.  The plan is to add more food like boneless wings as they settle in.  The tap house also has a 50 seat dog friendly covered patio.

Michelle shares they are family friendly and they will be adding a kids corner with games and a toy box full of things to entertain the little ones.

Centerville Couple To Open Meridien This Fall in Uptown Centerville

June 22, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

We first broke the news last weekend that the former Sweeney’s restaurant property had been sold. New owners Rhonda and Matt Hiatt have revealed that after a major renovations to the building, they hope to be opening Meridien this fall.  As of this week they’ve already ripped up flooring, started installing a new roof and changing the bar area.  They’ll be adding a two sided, 30 seat bar with a lounge area with couches behind it.

Matt said he considers what they are opening as more of a lounge with small plates, as opposed to a restaurant. Offering great wines and cocktails where you can relax and enjoy with friends.  When asking him for more about what they plan, he said they plan on lower price points than Manna and more upscale than Bargos.  As a Centerville resident who lives just a few blocks away from the Franklin location, he and his wife want to bring the experiences they’ve had while traveling to his own backyard.

He envisions Meridien as the kind of place that can host small parties, charity fundraisers and be “a place where community and culture can kind of intersect and have some really great experiences.”

All The Best Deli Opens Tuesday in Centerville

June 18, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Lee Schear, “obsessed with delis, created a team to visit many of the major delis in the U.S. to determine what the perfect mix of recipes, ingredients and atmosphere is.” Schear shared with us that this has been his dream for about the last ten years.  When in New York City he’d eat at the Stage Door Delicatessen or Carnegie Center Deli twice a day.

And now he’ll open his own deli, All The Best Delicatessen opens this Tuesday, June 20th on Far Hills Avenue. It will be open seven days a week from 11am – 7pm. It’s a full service deli with 80 seats and servers, as well as a deli counter.

They don’t try to hide the fact that they have  “shamelessly taken the best of the best ingredients from across the country sourced from traditional delis, groceries and bakeries.”  They actually promote it by sharing where they’ve sourced their ingredients. Their motto is they are “bringing you the All The Best and only the best from coast to coast!”

They’ve got smoked fish from Brooklyn, corned beef and pastrami straight from Detroit, chopped chicken liver ‘inspired by’ Zabar’s in Manhattan, rugelach from Cincinnati, rye bread sourced right here at home from Dorothy Lane Market. And Rachel Bakes will be providing their cheesecakes and seven layer cake.
They’ve printed their source list and you can pick up a copy at the deli.

I was fortunate enough to attend a sneak preview and started my meal with matzo ball soup, which instantly brought me back to my Chicago days when my jewish neighbor would make this.
Other soup options include  chicken soup with noodles, a split pea, mushroom beef barley, tomato basil bisque or cold or hot beet borscht. Our table sampled quite a few menu items:

Jewish Cobb Salad

Pastrami sandwich

Rugelach

Cheesecake

The sandwiches served on seeded rye bread were huge and half portions are available. Each table has a condiment tray and Schear was quick to point out that tums are offered at each table.

Also on the menu, a pickle plate, herring, knishes, and a smoke fish plate. Don’t be afraid to ask for a to go box so you can save room for dessert which includes Russian tea biscuits, cookies, a coconut bark, mandel bread and chocolate babka bread.

There is also a full service deli featuring smoked fish, deli cut meats and cheeses, pickles, olives, salads and desserts. Here’s a sample of their offerings:

Come July they will also be offering to-go platters for your party needs that can be picked up through their drive through window.

Can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu.  All The Best offers a true deli experience you won’t find anywhere else in Dayton. Here’s a peck at the menu to temp you:

Third Perk Coffee House Celebrates 8th Anniversary

June 16, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Juanita Darden-Jones, opened Third Perk Coffeehouse on Fifth Street in 2015, while also serving as a mathematics professor at Sinclair Community College. The cafe quickly became a Dayton favorite for meetings, grabbing premium coffee and a delicious chicken salad sandwich. It was there she launched her SHE-Ro speaking events, that highlights female community leaders who is open to mentoring other women, and she has a story to tell.
The next SHE-ROE Speaker event is  Saturday, July 15th in the community room at the Dayton Metro Library
West Branch Community Room.

She sits on the board of YLAG –Young Ladies Aspiring Greatness, mentoring our community’s youth. Juanita encourages people who would like to help support this group to make a donation and put the term Perk Up in the comments.

But when Premier Health moved out across the street, the entrepreneur saw a major drop in her business and the food traffic in the neighborhood dwindled. Then the proposed student housing in the old Dayton Daily News building fell through Darden- Jones moved her downtown location to 146 E. Third Street in 2020.

She also launched Third Perk locations at the Dayton Mall, Fairfield Common and most recently at Gem City Market. Sadly traffic counts weren’t high enough to sustain those businesses and they are now all closed. But Darden-Jones says that has given her time to re-focus and put effort into growing her downtown location. They’ve reved up the food menu serving quiche, salads and sandwiches. She has plans to expand the offerings and teases that her she’ll soon have the “sweetest corner” downtown.

She shares her journey in her podcast “The Broken Entrepreneur” as she goes through a massive shift to stay afloat.  You can follow what she calls her 18 Month Journey To profitability, scaling and sustainability For Years To Come.
