New Life for Zombie Dogz Food Truck

May 25, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

According to Hollywood Gaming Food & Beverage Director April Drumond, the original conversations began with David VanArtsdalen about opening a Zombie Dogz location inside the casino.  Eventually as talks progressed, Hollywood Gaming made an offer to buy the food truck, the recipes and VanArtsalen’s business expertise on running the truck.

And now you can find the truck that created a cult following located near brand-new Sunset Patio Bar.  The truck will be open Friday and Saturday from 4-9pm and Sunday noon – 5pm. Because you can approach the truck from outside, you won’t have to be 21 to enjoy a delicious dog.  And Amber shared with us, the truck will still go out to special community events as well.  There’s a link on their website to send an email to request the truck.

10 ?’s with Chef Matt DeAngulo

May 12, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef Matt

Chef Matt DeAngulo was the opening chef for Olive, an urban dive in 2011 and then served as the executive chef at Victoria Theatre Association’s Citilites at the Schuster Center and Event Services Department for nearly six years. In January of 2020 it was announced that they were closing down for renovations and a concept change, laying off all staff.

Chef Matt, began volunteering more time with a local organization Set the Banquet Table, which was founded by baker and former Executive Director of House of Bread, Bill Evans.  And then COVID 19 hit. In mid-March, Chef Matt DeAngulo asked friend and Set the Banquet Table Chairman, Bill Evans, the best way to help. A couple of conversations more and Chef Matt had activated a team of recently unemployed chefs and culinary professionals to assist by quickly and efficiently bulk preparing nutritious food.

As word got out among the social services community, Chef Matt’s meals were in demand. In his quest to feed the hungry in the region the vision for Miami Valley Meals was born.  Using the skills of local chefs, they were able to use every bit of the donated food they received to create bulk nutritious meals to those in need.

Matt guides the culinary team to transform recovered foods into hearty, chef-inspired meals to be distributed to a network of partners serving the hungry in the Miami Valley—free of charge.

Chef Matt took time out of creating over 3500/meals per week to answer our 10 questions:

What ingredient do you dread? Beans! They are like eating a Tylenol capsule filled with applesauce. The plastic-like outer skin and a mushy center, no thanks! Honestly, I enjoy the flavor of beans, just not the texture, so to put that as my dreaded ingredient is a bit selfish. Kidding aside, I will have to say offal meats are my least favorite ingredients to work with.

What’s your favorite dish to make? A dish I call Rotolino. It was created by my mentor, Chef Dennis McCarthy, and passed along to me. I use it as a teaching technique (similar to foie gras torchon) with young chefs and everyone gets to enjoy the result. It consists of 4 cheeses, 3 pestos, and pinenuts, rolled up to make a pinwheel that screams Italian on an American table.

What’s your favorite pig out food? Midwestern home cooking. I can eat meatloaf stuffed with mac-n-cheese and wrapped in bacon until I have to lay down. I may create modernist cuisine professionally, but I can never escape the meat and potato in me.

What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley? There are many wonderful places to dine in our region to carve out just one. I tend to find myself in a booth at any ma and pop kitchen I come across, looking for that genuine heartfelt creation. Yet to put a spotlight on the best we have around, I have enjoyed experiencing what Chef Wiley has done at her restaurants over the years, along many of the other greats that have come and gone, but truly the props go out to all of those independents getting up everyday and cooking their hearts out.

What’s your best advice for home chefs? Learn flavor structure, the 5 basic flavors and how to balance them. It is the building block for all successful dishes. I have run into so many chefs that learned how to cook a dish by watching someone but never took the time to learn why it worked well. How to balance flavors to dishes you already make will change the outcome; I guarantee.

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party, who would they be and why? That is a difficult answer to locate. So many have influenced me and I feel are worthy to mention. However to choose a group, Thomas Keller would always be someone I would like to dine with, as he is America’s greatest chef. Add the late Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsey because they will tell you like it is, plus Bill Murray because he would never stop laughing, and that would be an entertaining evening with great food!

Who do you look up to in the industry and why? All of those old skoolers. The ones who worked to the end, never giving up, and wearing the honor with their crews. The ones who stayed to hone their craft. And the many young chefs I watch, that one in every one-hundred cooks you meet that will become a chef in their own right, are the ones I look up to today.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off? I spend it with the people I love. My hobbies are my passion and I usually end up near a place with food. You can find me out in nature, at a ballgame or concert, or resting watching a movie, but it always ends with food.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story: Many years ago, I was hired as a new corporate chef for an independent dining group in downtown Columbus. Two weeks into my tenure was Easter Sunday. I spent the week prepping and setting up the usual. I was all ready to go. Turns out, the night before was graduation day for OSU, and I had no idea of the amount of people we would serve, since I was from out of town. Needless to say, I ended up using much of my Easter prep to complete dinner service that night. After the shift ended, myself, my sous chef and her wife (also a cook) stayed through the night and into the next day restocking the menu. That Easter we served over 800 guests and no one had any idea I was on a 32 hour straight shift to make it happen. That was the longest shift of my career.

Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine Opens Thursday

May 4, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Deepika amongst the construction.

Downtown Daytonians have long cried for Indian food downtown and now Gulzar’s will fill that niche!

In March of 2020 AJ and Deepika Singh  signed a least to open Gulzar’s on Patterson Street across from the ballpark.  They anticipated opening in the summer of 2020.  And then the pandemic and all plans were put on hold.  And now after long delays to get the building supplies they needed, they are ready to open! Deepika took time to chat with us, as she was surrounded with electricians working on wiring and in the process of bringing the register system online.

Featuring a Northern Indian cuisine they will offer a lunch buffet weekdays for $13.99 and menu entrees at dinner, beginning on Thursday, May 5th.  This is the 2nd Gulzar’s location, the other one is in Richmond Indiana, which opened in 2015.  In fact is was one of their Richmond customers that suggested this location, after AJ and partner Jay had been looking in the Dayton area for a while.  Deepika shared with us that they “knew within 15 minutes of seeing this site it was the one.” The restaurant can seat about 70 guests.

The family has a long history of running restaurants,  Deepika grew up  in India as part of a family business, serving Indian food.  Then a family friend sponsored her father to come be the head chef at an eatery in Cincinnati.  And while she often cooks at home, her Dad will do most of the cooking at the Dayton location. She says he is especially known for his Karai dishes – which blend three sauces cooked with ginger, garlic, onions, and pepper as a base. In Indian food its all about the curry and gravy’s are the foundation for each dish and then flavors are built from there.

Gulzar’s Karai

Because each dish is made fresh when you  order it each dish is easily customizable, which can  makes it’s menu very friendly to vegans, those that eat gluten-free or any other allergies.  Their menu is vast and even includes many lamb and goat options.

Deppika shared that their restaurant is know for their “service and family ambiance. It’s so much more than just making money, we love to gather,  share good food and family is everything.”

Still to come, the patio and the liquor license, and then an official Grand Opening, but in the meantime head on in and enjoy!

Backwater Voodoo are big fans of the line of premium rums launched by the band KISS® last year.  KISS® are big supporters of Crew Nation, and this collaboration creates the perfect opportunity to tie-in with their upcoming appearance at the Ervin J. Nutter Center (in Dayton) on May 12.

One entry ticket gives you a chance to win the following prize:

A bottle of limited, numbered edition KISS Ultra-Premium Monstrum Rum,

AND two (2) tickets to the KISS End of the Road Tour concert at the Wright State Nutter Center on May 12, 2022.

The drawing will be held on May 10 and the winner will be contacted by Backwater Voodoo.  Must be 21 or older to purchase a valid entry. Buy your $20 raffle ticket here. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit Crew Nation, and the Miamisburg merchants Association.

Backwater Voodoo, located at 103 S 2nd St in  Miamisburg, is also hosting a KISS Rum Tasting on Tues, May 10th from 6:30-8pm. Tickets for the tasting run $55 and can be purchased online.

This tasting will feature all three of the KISS rums, including the Limited Edition Ultra-Premium Monstrum. Check them out:

KISS Black Diamond Premium Dark Rum – Taking its name and character from the closing song on KISS’s 1974 debut album, KISS Black Diamond Premium Dark Rum is an exceptionally smooth blend of Caribbean cask rums aged up to 15 years and bottled at 40%. This master-blended creation has received six internationally recognized awards since the launch in October 2020.

KISS Detroit Rock Premium Dark Rum – Just as in the fans’ favorite classic ‘Detroit Rock City’, this premium rum lives up to the song’s legacy with eight globally recognized awards for quality. Based on a selection of the finest Dominican rum casks aged between 8 and 15 years, the result is an incredibly soft rum, fantastically smooth with a nuanced spicy scent and clear oak character which is unique for a blend of 45% strength.

KISS Monstrum Ultra-Premium Rum – The Latin word for ‘monster,’ the KISS Monstrum Ultra-Premium Dark is the newest and boldest addition to the portfolio. Specially selected from Guyana and Jamaica, the rums have been aged for over 14 years in ancient arrack leggers, a very particular edition of 800 liter oak casks. The curated result is one of high quality perfection in a clean, clear and light-colored ultra-premium rum with no added sugars or flavoring.

Light snacks will be served as part of the event.

TEDxDayton Now Accepting Speaker Applications

April 30, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

The 10th annual TEDxDayton signature event will take place Friday, October 14, in downtown Dayton. Applications are now open as organizers seek local speakers and performers with big ideas to share. TEDxDayton’s mission is to bring the spirit of “ideas worth spreading” to foster deep conversation and connections within the community.

”We’re thrilled to return to a live, in-person show for 2022 after two years of virtual events,” said event co-chair Lizz Mahar. “This one will be extra special as we celebrate 10 years of TEDxDayton speakers, and look forward to what comes next.” This independently organized event will feature TED’s signature format of brief talks, demonstrations and performances.

In search of this year’s presenters, the organizers have issued a “Call for Speakers” on TEDxDayton.com. Anyone with a big idea they want to share, both with the live audience at the event and with the thousands of digital viewers who watch the talks online later, is invited to apply through the website by May 27.

The set from TEDx last year.

Applicants do not need to be professional speakers, and TEDxDayton is looking for a wide range of topics from diverse speakers who can deliver a focused, thought-provoking message in about ten minutes.

“We look for speakers who can teach and inspire, and who will still have people talking as they leave the theater,” said event co-chair Cory Owen. “Over the years, we’ve heard remarkable talks on everything from technology to education, design to psychology, economics, social justice, healthcare, the environment…the list of possible topics is almost endless.”

The all-volunteer organizing team will review the applications and invite selected candidates to audition in person. Participants will be notified within a few weeks of auditions if they have been selected to be a TEDxDayton 2022 speaker.

Once selected, speakers will be paired with a mentor who will help them craft their message, refine their script, and practice their performance in the months leading up to the big day. Talks are professionally recorded during the show and released on YouTube a few months later.

“These videos have a long online life beyond the actual event, so we want all of our speakers to give the talk of their lives,” said event co-chair Luther Palmer. “As a former TEDxDayton speaker myself, I know how valuable mentor support and rehearsal feedback is during this process, and we hope to guide this year’s speakers toward talks that they can be proud of for years to come.”

The organizers will host information sessions for prospective speakers throughout the application window, with details to be announced on the TEDxDayton social media channels.

British Gastropub Opens in Enon

April 16, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

About two weeks ago the doors to The Last Queen Gastropub opened on East Main Street in Enon. The 49 seat eatery is rustic and charming serving up british classics, ale and more.  Upon entering you grab a table, then head to the bar to place your order at which time you’ll be given a wooden spoon with a number and a British Character on it.  We got Harry Potter, but spotted Winston Churchill, The Queen and Idris Elba on other tables in the dining room. When ready, a runner brings your food to the table.

On Saturday and Sunday from 9:30am – noon they serve a traditional Full English Breakfast with local eggs, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, sausage, bacon baked beans and toast.

The lunch/dinner menu offers “Bite with A Pint” like roasted spicy nuts, an olive mash with cracker and a small very basic charcuterie board.

Here’s the full menu:

As expected the fish and chips were very good.

The bar was well stocked and you can even enjoy a flight of whiskey.

The sticky toffee pudding was spot on.  The also offer tiramisu, crafted by Grist Provisions and a rotating assortment of ice cream flavors from Hartzler Faimily Dairy.

The menu identifies locally sourced items as well as vegetarian options.

Once the patio is open there are another 40 or so seats available

Grand Opening for Now and Zen DIY Studio

April 16, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Mother Paula Willis and her daughter Alleah Cooks turned their passion for nature and creativity into a business.  After having started up at the 2nd Street Market five years ago, Now and Zen Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Studio is now opening a shop in the Fire Blocks District.

As part of the grand opening festivities today, April 16th  from 11am – 4pm you’re invited to:
○Stop in and just say hello!
○Spin-the-Wheel for discounts & gifts!
○Make our featured small project.
●“Succulent in a Mug” $14+
●”BYOM” or choose a mug from our selection
○Or reserve a spot on shopnowandzen.com to create at our terrarium bar!

Willis and Cooks have always had a love for  plants and nature. They began to make their own terrariums  and this quickly turned into a business idea as friends began to inquire about buying their creations.  Willis and Cooks used this opportunity to expand their business and began hosting workshops at various rental facilities. Over time, they decided to open a brick-and-mortar location. This enabled them to host regular groups of people looking to create terrariums and other craft projects.

“My favorite part is watching people create their own designs and encouraging them to experiment and work with nature. At the end, it’s nice to see how proud they are of their designs,” Cooks said.

Script Reading of An Appalachian Version Of A Midsummer Night’s Dream

April 16, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Here’s your chance to witness a piece of showbiz, right here in Dayton.  FilmDayton filmmaker Shaunn Baker is staging a  public reading for a new screen adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream  on Monday April 25th at  7pm at The Loft Theatre in downtown Dayton. The reading is open to the public and free to attend. Make your free reservation here.
The adaptation is set in Appalachia during the 1800s, and uses Appalachian dialect with the original Shakespearean verse.

Shaunn Baker

“Shakespeare’s words performed with this dialect are really beautiful, as it turns out,” said local filmmaker Shaunn Baker who adapted the screenplay and is working to get the script produced as a feature film. “It’s a rougher sound, closer to the Old English the play would have been performed in originally. It’s a very different experience from hearing the story in the more traditional ‘heightened’ dialect we typically associate with Shakespeare. My hope is that the roughness of the Appalachian culture and accent will make this adaptation much more accessible to contemporary audiences.”

This project is generously supported (in part) through an Artist Opportunity Grant funded by the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District and administered by Culture Works.

The Latest Additions To Fraze Summer Schedule

$45 – Plaza
$40 – Orchestra
$30 – Lawn & Terrace

Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades.

Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996. On September 17, 2021, Melissa released a new album called One Way Out. The 9-track album is a collection of songs Etheridge wrote in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s that never made the cut….until now! The time is finally right, and fans will finally get a deeper glimpse to who Melissa was then.

TLC

TLC’s influence transcends genres from pop, hip-hop, R&B to fashion and female  empowerment. They continue to define generations. To date, TLC has sold 85 million Records Worldwide, had 4 Number One singles  in the US, 10 Top Ten singles in the US, won 4 Grammy Awards, 5 MTV Awards, 5 Soul  Train Awards, and 4 Multi-Platinum selling albums, two of them – Fanmail and  CrazySexyCool are certified Diamond by the RIAA and they currently have one billion  plays on Pandora. It’s no surprise that TLC is the best-selling American girl group of all  time.

Formed in Atlanta in 1990, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, two girls  with spirit, smarts and spunk, had their sights set on a big future. Feeling a trio could work better than a duo, a manager recommended  Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas to round out the sound, with their nicknames spelling out the  acronym TLC. By 1992, the girls had not only been signed, but released their first  album, Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip, to both critical and commercial success, selling 4  million copies in the Unites States and yielding 3 top ten singles. Along with their ability  to blend funk, hip hop and soul, the ladies put female empowerment at the forefront of  their songwriting. Two years later they released their breakthrough album,  CrazySexyCool. Met with critical and commercial  acclaim once more, Rolling Stone ranked it as one of the best 500 Albums of all time  saying it was “highly enjoyable, incredibly influential and a certified classic.” The album  produced 4 top five singles on the Billboard charts and TLC won Video of the Year for  the song “Waterfalls” at the MTV Awards, making them the first black act to do so.

Shaggy

The two-time Grammy winner was born Orville Richard Burrell and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Shaggy got his start as a club DJ in New York City’s burgeoning dancehall scene soon after moving to Brooklyn in his teens. Not long after serving four years in the U.S. Marines (including two tours of duty in the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Storm), he inked his first record deal and quickly scored a global crossover smash with “Oh Carolina.”

As the only diamond-selling dancehall artist in music history, Shaggy, managed by the Cherrytree Music Company, has sold more than 40 million album units to date, in addition to landing eight singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and seven albums on the Billboard 200 (including four in the top 40). He is among the top 3 streamed reggae artists of all time on Spotify (along with Bob Marley & Sean Paul).

10?’s with Chef Suwapat “Sue” Whitted of Thai Kitchen & Thai Table

April 13, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Whitted has operated Thai Kitchen at 8971 Kingsridge Drive behind the Dayton Mall since 2017.  After a major remodel of the old Geez restaurant on Far Hills, she opened Thai Table in March of 2021.  Whitted shared  that “Thai cuisine has becoming more popular in the Dayton area, and I want to explore some new ideas.” Somehow between running both restaurants she found time to answer our questions.

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

This may sound pretty basic, but I love to cook with rice! In Asian cuisine, rice is an important main ingredient. The variety also gives you so many options to choose from, like long grain rice, short grain rice, and especially Jasmine rice, which is very popular in Thailand. Growing up in Thailand, rice was like bread is here in America, there are so many uses for it!

What ingredient do you dread?
Hmm… I don’t think I dread any ingredients. I love challenging myself with new foods all the time, even making special dishes for customers. My husband is the guinea pig for my new dishes, maybe you should ask him what he dreads haha.

What’s your favorite dish to make?

I love love love making dishes that make others happy! My favorite is BBQ ribs! My husband and his family ask for them all the time and they seem to absolutely love them! I’ve even catered our family events before and the ribs were gone almost instantly.

What’s your favorite pig out food?

Ok… So, this is my guilty pleasure… I love to pig out on the fish sandwich from Wendy’s! Or any fish sandwich from most fast food places, but Wendy’s is usually what I crave the most, as well as their nuggets and frosties! Yummm!

Tiger Super Rolls

What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

Haha, well other than my own… Definitely China Cottage! I think the food there is very good! Especially the duck! The owners are also good friends of mine, and are some of the nicest people that you could ever meet!

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

For anyone who cooks from home, always try to keep your ingredients fresh! It makes such a big difference in the end result. I drive myself crazy trying to keep the freshest ingredients at our restaurants but there’s no substitute. The best way to get the best end result no matter what you’re making, is to start at the best possible starting point! Also, be careful with hot popping oils.

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Ahh… That’s such a good question! I am very family oriented so of course the four guests at my dinner party would be my family who still live in Thailand! I would love for my Grandmother to come here and see all I’ve been able to do, she’s very old and doesn’t travel well, but it would be so great to show her America for the first time. Another, is my Aunt, who helped raise me as a child! She’s one of the nicest, sweetest people that I’ve ever met. Of course, no dinner party would feel complete for me without my amazing parents! My Mom and Dad have been so supportive and helpful. It’s hard moving literally to the other side of the world and trying to start your own business, and I couldn’t have done it without them!

Pad Thai

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

My best friends and owners/chefs from Bangkok Street in Cincinnati Toon and Cindy! They took me under their wings and taught me everything they knew about the business. From how to cook, to running a restaurant! They are who I look to whenever I feel like I’ve gotten myself in over my head.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?

Sleep! Haha! Owning two different restaurants I very rarely have any time off, but on the occasion that I do get time off, I usually will go around and buy fresh ingredients for the restaurants. I’ll often go out with my hubby and have a nice dinner date night and we’ll go and watch a movie! I love spending time with him, he helps keep me sane with my crazy schedule- haha.
